This study investigates online inferences within script-based texts. The three types of inferences examined relate to causal antecedents (e.g., why did an accident happen?), superordinate goals (e.g., why did he say that?), and subordinate goal-action (e.g., how did she earn so much money?). According to constructionist theory (Graesser, Singer, & Trabasso, 1994), inferences for subordinate goal-actions only occur offline. In this study, participants read script-based texts that are hypothesized to facilitate online inferences due to high levels of contextual constraints. In two conducted experiments, participants read eight stories and undertook a line recognition test. Learning intention was also manipulated (Experiment 2). The results indicate that when a preceding line was deleted, reading times for a target line increased, regardless of inference type or learning intention. Increased latencies for correct rejections and false alarm rates to deleted lines were similarly observed. Inconsistent with constructionist theory, these results suggest that, for script-based texts, inferences for subordinate goal-actions also occur online, just like the other two types of inferences.

Klein and Loftus (1993) claimed that both trait-descriptive and autobiographical information about the self is available in memory, and that each can be addressed independently (the former is in the semantic memory system, the later is in the episodic memory system). In order to examine the validity of their claim, the conceptually-driven test on the implicit instruction was used. In Experiment 1, the self-descriptive task (“Does this word describe you?”) produced better performance than the semantic task. However, in Experiment 2, there was no difference in performance between the autobiographical task (“Can you access a personal experience?”) and the semantic task. These results were discussed in terms of a principle of transfer-appropriate processing, and it was interpreted that the difference in the results of the two experiments should support Klein and Loftus's (1993) claim.

Using a descriptive task (e. g., “Does this word describe you?”), two experiments were carried out to investigate how self-knowledge and the type of stimuli (adjectives) affect the self-reference effect. In Experiment 1, the degree of centrality of self-knowledge was manipulated. The results showed that the central-area referent condition (in which subjects judged whether words described their character) produced better recall than the semantic condition, but there was no difference in recall between the semantic condition and the marginal-area referent conditions (in which subjects judged whether words described their feet or eyes). In Experiment 2, the self-knowledge descriptiveness and the familiarity of stimuli were manipulated. The results indicated that the self-reference effect occurred only when the stimuli referred to personality traits and were rated high in familiarity. These results suggest that the self-reference effect occurs only when the stimuli refer to personality traits, and when subjects associate those stimuli with a central part of their character.
