Examination of part-time job satisfaction and exhaustion of international students in Japan based on self-determination theory Reviewed

The present study examined how job satisfaction and exhaustion are affected by motivational regulation and style in the part-time jobs of international students in Japan, based on self-determination theory. A multivariate regression analysis, which included five motivational regulations as independent variables and job satisfaction and exhaustion as dependent variables, was conducted. The results showed that job satisfaction was positively correlated with intrinsic regulation and identified regulation and negatively correlated with introjected regulation. For exhaustion, a negative correlation was shown with intrinsic regulation, and a positive correlation was shown with extrinsic and identified regulation. The results of a cluster analysis based on five motivational regulations revealed four motivational styles. High motivational styles were shown to have the highest job satisfaction, and low intrinsic/high extrinsic styles were shown to have the highest exhaustion.

<p>This study was designed to examine factors that improve job satisfaction of international students studying in Japan when doing part-time jobs, based on sub-theories of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). A hypothetical model based on the organismic integration theory and basic psychological needs theory, which are sub-theories of the SDT, were developed and examined through covariance structure analysis. The main results were as follows: (a) the need for relatedness and the need for competence, which are basic psychological needs, directly improve job satisfaction; (b) autonomous motivation is increased, and higher job satisfaction is obtained by satisfying the three psychological needs; (c) positive effect of the need for relatedness on the need for competence and positive effect of the need for competence on the need for autonomy were observed, suggesting the importance of satisfying the need for relatedness in part-time employment. The psychological processes affecting the job satisfaction of international students studying in Japan when doing part-time jobs is discussed based on the above results.</p>

Perceived aspects of family : Comparing responses between men and women by quantitative context analysis Reviewed

The purpose of this study was to clarify how youths perceive their families and to examine whether there are differences between men and women in contents that they perceive their families. The Twenty Statement Test was administered to undergraduate students (95 men and 141 women) to measure how they perceive their family, and quantitative context analysis of the responses was conducted. Correspondence analysis was applied to clarify the relation between responses written by men and women and 13 codes that compose the perceived content about family, and it is indicated that men's responses associate with "self", "social background", "wealth", "social life" and women's responses associate with "family", "relationship", "physical characteristic", "daily life", "values", "birth",communication" and that "characteristic" and "recreation" associate with both sex's responses. From the above results, the following two things are implied. One is that men perceive the family aspect defined in society and they are particularly aware of themselves. The other is that women perceive the family aspect defined in their family and they are particularly aware of family members or the whole family.

<p>The purpose of this study, which was based on the self-determination theory, was to develop a scale to measure motivation for part-time employment among international students in Japan. In Part I of this study, we asked for responses to 40 items selected in a preliminary survey. The results of a factor analysis indicated that the scale was composed of the following five factors: intrinsic, integrated, identified, introjected, and external regulation. In addition, the correlation analysis among the factors confirmed that the correlation coefficients were highest for types of motivation that were theoretically closest to one another. Furthermore, correlation coefficients for the job satisfaction scale were highest for motivation types with the highest level of self-determination. Part II of this study showed that test-retest reliability was adequate. These results showed that the scale had sufficient reliability and validity and that its score could predict job satisfaction.</p>

The survival processing effect is a robust memory phenomenon of memory whereby encouraging participants to judge words for relevance to a survival situation produces better recall than other processing tasks such as semantic or self-reference tasks (Nairne, Thompson, & Pandeirada, 2007). The present study separated memory performance into recollection and familiarity, and estimated the contribution of these two factors to the survival processing effect as adaptive memory by using a recognition test based on the dual-process signal detection model. This study also examined the long-term persistence of the effect by delay manipulation (immediate, after a week, after five weeks) of the recognition test. Under delayed conditions (after a week and five weeks), survival processing advantage occurred on recollection, but semantic processing had no effect. In contrast, for familiarity, there was no significant difference between survival and semantic processing. These findings suggest that the survival processing effect mainly relies on recollection.
