研究開始時点では想定できなかった長期にわたる新型コロナウィルスのパンデミックの影響を受けて、フィールド調査のいくつかは計画の順番変更を余儀なくされたが、困難を乗り越えておおむね順調、一部計画を先行して進めることができた。本研究はミュオン班・墳丘班・埴輪班の３つの班によって実施されている。それぞれの班ごとに研究経過を報告する。
ミュオン班：2020 年度は、古墳研究に適用するミュオン検出器の設計を検討し、検出器製作の基本方針を定め、製作を開始した。
墳丘班：墳丘班による三次元計測は、岡山市造山古墳周辺、総社市作山古墳で実施している。総社市鳶尾塚古墳の三次元計測も完了している。赤磐市両宮山古墳については、赤磐市教育委員会から三次元データを提供していただき、当初予定していた吉備三大古墳の墳丘三次元データを初年度で入手したことになる。次いでそれぞれのデータ整理を開始している。また、鳶尾塚古墳では墳丘の発掘調査を実施し、直径23mの円墳であることが推定されるに至っている。
埴輪班：造山古墳、両宮山周辺古墳（赤磐市森山古墳、同・宮山 4 号墳、同・岩田 3 号墳）と倉敷市二万大塚古墳出土埴輪の資料を所蔵機関から入手し、光学・電子顕微鏡による微細組織観察、X 線回折装置による鉱物同定、および電子線マイクロアナライザ・蛍光 X 線分析装置による化学分析を実施した。その結果、胎土には主に風化花崗岩起源の鉱物粒子と広域テフラ起源のガラス粒子が含まれており、それらの組成から生産地を特定できる可能性が示された。また、鉱物の熱変成と融解の程度により、野焼きと窖窯における焼成温度が見積もられた。埴輪の考古学的観察も並行して進め、造山古墳と畿内王陵系埴輪の比較研究を実施している。 -

This study conducted a series of excavations at Mol Bulak 1 in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzstan and Dalverzin in the Fergana Valley in Uzbekistan in order to understand when and how early farmers and herders exploited the harsh topography of the mountainous zone and its foothills. The results suggest that early farmers and herders established seasonal transhumance as adaptation, taking over a millennium after the first introduction of agropastralism in the region in c. 2500 BC, and that agropastoralism was established in the region through interactions among diverse groups from the west, north, and east.

In order to clarify the population dynamics of Jomon Period in western Japan, this study examined the creation of a spatial database of archaeological sites, estimates of settlement system and the size of residential groups, and a model for predicting the presence of Jomon-period sites. To examine the true change of archaeological materials, 14C dating data were examined. In order to examine the spatial bias, a prediction model of Archaeological sites was created and examined. Then, changes in society and settlement system and their factors were examined using agent-based simulations. As a result, various issues for examining population dynamics were clarified, and a perspective on methodology was obtained.

The relationship between environmental change and site dynamics during the Jomon period in the central Setouchi region was comprehensively investigated using borehole surveys and site data. The borehole survey was conducted in the lower reaches of the Asahi River near Tsushima-Okadai site and the relationship between the both was modeled using also excavation data from the site. And a database of archaeological sites in the study area was also created. Based on the above analysis data, paleo-coastline was reconstructed assuming relative sea-level changes. In the analysis of site dynamics, we found that the number and distribution of sites and changes in subsistence-related material culture were strongly related to environmental changes that occurred during the latter part of Middle to initial part of Late and the around early part of the Final Jomon period. By dating shell mound sites, we have estimated the active period and discussed the subsistence activities.

We tried reconstruction of paleoenvironment by carrying out geological boring survey in Okayama Plain located in the southern Okayama district and were able to obtain the data for considering sea level change by analyzing C14 and Diatom from Early Jomon to Early Yayoi periods. Based on it, we considered reexamination of site distribution and excavation reports, and estimated the coastline of each time.
This study revealed that marine regression in Middle Jomon period and re-transgression in Late Jomon period likely affect sites-dynamics in this area. This result has impact to reconsider the previous assumption. -

A series of excavations at the ancient urban site of Kultepe, Republic of Turkey, led to the better understanding of a massive public building dated to the late Early Bronze Age. In addition, the archaeological survey in the region neighbouring the site revealed a total of 124 sites across the Kayseri Province that has been hitherto terra incognita archaeologically. One of the most important discoveries among them is that we found tin-mining and working sites (Senir Sirti and Teknekaya), which contributed to reconsidering the ancient bronze production system in the Near East. A new settlement site of Ikitepe dated to the Assyrian colony period was also discovered during our survey. The Cost Distance Analysis around Kultepe on the basis of a rich geomorphological dataset suggested a new communication or trade route linking Anatolian plateau via the Mediterranean coastal regions, and Mesopotamia to the east.

By compiling GIS related database of archaeological sites from the Jomon and Yayoi period, we elucidated 1)the non-linear development of residential system from the Jomon to the Yayoi period in western Japan, 2) relationship between population increase and social stratification in Okayama Prefecture, and 3)the problems with estimating population size based on the number of pit houses. Matsumoto also carried out excavations to obtain further information on prehistoric environment and settlement system.
We described the shape of pottery quantitatively with Fourier function and applied principal component analysis. The result indicates that we may differentiate tenporal variation from other types of variations. We also constructed an agent-based simulation program for analyzing demographic and cultural changes and make it available on the website.
