  • Diversity and structure of soil fungal communities unveil the building history of a burial mound of ancient Japan (Tobiotsuka Kofun, Okayama Prefecture) Reviewed International coauthorship International journal

Kofuns are burial mounds of ancient Japan (3rd-7th century CE, defined as Kofun Period). The construction history and archaeological significance of Kofuns of the Late Kofun Period (6th-7th century) still need to be characterized. This study dealt with Tobiotsuka Kofun (Okayama Prefecture, Japan) and aimed to investigate if diversity and structure of soil fungal communities, and their relationships with soil characteristics, beyond reflecting present vegetation, may be informative on the construction history of the burial mound. In particular the analyses aimed to verify the supposed presence of a boundary between the original hill and the potential anthropic backfill. Soil fungal communities were characterized by high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq technology), at the ground and through different archaeological soil layers. Approximately 1.5 x 10(6) high quality ITS2 sequences, clustered in 1875 OTUs, were obtained from 59 sampling points, distributed inside the burial chamber and on the Kofun external slopes. Heterogeneity and vertical distribution of fungal communities, considered in terms of taxonomic and trophic groups, generally showed a compatible pattern with present-day topographic conditions and vegetation. However, the chemical soil analyses and fungal distribution with depth, in particular that of saprotrophic fungi, cannot be explained by natural soil development and ecological context only, and point towards the presence of a former topsoil layer that was disturbed and at least partially buried by the Kofun construction.

We have researched mounded tombs and cemeteries in the Kofun period, which were located near the seashore, especially the Isoma-iwakage Site in Tnanabe City, Wakayama. It is a cemetery from the late 5th century to the 7th century. A lot of human remains and funeral goods were unearthed. Archaeological and anthropological teams anlayzed them together. We are going to publish the report in 2020.
We also researcehd other sites near the seashore and made it clear that some of them had a relationship with the Yamato Government. That is why they could make mounded tombs.

The goal of this research was to utilize the significant amount of Japan's Kofun-period archaeological material in order to clarify the historical significance of mounded-tomb building within human history. Comparison with the mounded-tomb building cultures of the world revealed that the mounded tomb (kofun) culture of Japan was unique: not only is Japan home to the greatest number of mounded tombs throughout the world measuring over 200m in length, but the shape and size of the tombs represented the political hierarchy centered on the paramount king. Furthermore, this unique nature of the kofun culture derived from the fact that Japan's state formation was accomplished through regional consolidation rather than through warfare, and that this widespread integration was represented in a set of shared mortuary rituals.

We studied and analyzed Isomaiwakage Site.It became clear that people buried in Isomaiwakage Site were fishermen by the isotopic analysis and funeral goods. And it also became clear that some people in some coffins were not relatives each other.I pointed out that a few families which were not relatives each other gathered and made a new settlememt. Some decorative accessories for swords, made of deer antler, found in Isomaiwakage Site are famous. We thought that they were presented by the Yamato polity. So, we conclude that this settlement was made under the help of the Yamato Administration.

The authors synthesized the comprehensive results of over one hundred years of Kofun-Period research and concluded that the Kofun Period can most appropriately be characterized as an Early-State society in which, while a certain level of regional autonomy remained, unified political control was achieved over the Japanese archipelago (excluding Hokkaido and Okinawa). The paramount central Kinki power deftly utilized monumental mounded tomb building to maintain its sociopolitical hierarchy. Additionally, the authors disseminated this understanding on a global scale through presentations at overseas workshops and collections of papers in both English and Japanese.

This study archaeologically approaches to the political history of Kofun Period Japan by integrating the results of analyses of artifacts mainly discovered since the 1990's and of effective fieldwork. As a result of this study, we have reached the following conclusion: While the political authority with the nature of central dominance had always existed in the Kinai region from the end of the Yayoi Period (early third century A.D.) to the Late Kofun Period (early seventh century), the political leadership shifted several times within the central authority. We have hypothesized that a background to the shifts was a competitive relationship between polities based in the Yamato basin and in the Kawachi plain.

In well preserved depositional environment, even though archaeological data about burial positions can be almost universally colleted. However, very few studies have been undertaken on a large scale on this matter. Our project thus, tried to emphasized, with a comparative approach, on data from Japan, East Asia and Europe, and reached the 3 points conclusion below.
(1)Flexed burial was the main practice during Jomon period's Japanese archipelago. However, with the introduction of continental influence at the beginning of Yayoi period, the situation tends to change toward extended burial practices, which became mainstream during the state formation age of the Kofun period.
(2)The situation in East Asia, chronologically corresponding to Jomon period, is essentially characterized by extended burials. In fact, there is a good probability that during the earliest phase of Jomon period, funerary influences responsible for the diffusion of flexed burial in Japan rather came from the southern islands than the Asian continent itself, which point of view is quite new in the matter of thinking the genealogy of Jomon culture.
(3)Flexed burials represent the main practice in Neolithic Europe, while China shows a clear preference for extended burial. There are significant differences in burial practices due to regionalisms between eastern and western Eurasia, situation that needs further investigations regarding its background.
The above observations constitute nothing more than a basis, elaborated after three years of investigations, and one can expect new developments as we intend to conduct further research from the burial type point of view.

This propose of this research is to understand the collapse of Keyhole-shaped mounded tombs in Western Japan by comparing examples from several areas. The points below were understood.
    1) Collapse of Keyhole-shaped mounded tombs is obviously different among different areas.
    2) Collapse of Keyhole-shaped mounded tombs does have big influences during the early mid-Kofun period (early 5c.), late mid-Kofun period (late 5c), middle of the late-Kofun period to late late-Kofun period (mid 6c-late 6c)
    3) In the early time of the late-Kofun period (early 6c), the long stopped construction of the Keyhole-shaped mounded tombs was temporarily restarted in certain areas.
The change of the political relationships among the central authority and local authorities, the spread of the plain burial in Eastern Asia, the change of burial habit along with the import of Corridor style stone chamber and so on, formed the background of the collapse of Keyhole-shaped mounded tombs: The complete disappearance of Keyhole-shaped mounded tomb in the late 6^<th> century shows that Keyhole-shaped mounded tomb was no more a necessity in the society and it is most probably related to the political reform during the reign of Empress Suiko. However, the large among of circular-shaped mounded tombs and square shaped mounded tombs shows that in order to maintain social order, funeral ritual is necessary.

It is the most important for depicting clearly the people themselves and their live in prehistoric periods that we closely study the human skeletal remains and animal bone remains which have been unearthed in archaeological contexts. In the Japanese archaeology, however, the system to evaluate properly the results obtained through scientific analyses of such remains has not been fully established. Social interests for the study of ancient human skeletons and animal bones, thus far seem to not have been well matured. Furthermore arrangement of skeletal materials at universities and institutes, is quite bad for the cooperative research. For such reasons, both the osteoarchaeology and zooarchaeology researches in Japan are still to be advanced, and those research abilities should be well organized. In the three years in which this research project has been granted, we have worked for public relations in collaboration with several regional projects for excavation and conservation of archaeology sites, and have improved the storage system of ancient human skeletal materials. Actually we organized a quite big scale of public symposium every year, that is, in collaboration with Osaka Prefecture Ikegami-Sone Site Improvement Project in 1999, with Kobe-city Shinpo Site Excavation Programme in 2000, and with Hokkaido Date-city Kitakogane Shell-mound Conservation Project in 2001, respectively. In the three years, we improved the circumstances around human skeletal collections for research work and completed lists of such collections at Tohoku Univ., Kyoto Univ., Osaka City Univ., Osaka Univ. and Kyushu Univ. In addition, we tried test researches as to AMS dating, experimental archaeology, stable isotope analysis, and so on, using human and animal bone remains.

On and around Gemiler Island, Southwest end of Turkey, there are early Byzantine ruins. Gemiler Island seems to have been flourished in the 6th century by means of the maritime transportation in the Mediterranean Sea and pilgrimage related to the veneration of St. Nicholas.
In the 2001 season we carried out the following campaigns:
    1. The excavation of the so-called Church III on Gemiler Island. We discovered floor mosaics of very high quality
    2. The measurement of the so-called Church II on Gemiler Island. We obtaind the plan, elevation and section of the church building
    3. The mapping ofGemiler'lsland. City sites, tombs, harbor facilities etc. were dotted on the map
    4. General survey in and around Kaya. We discovered a ruin ofa Byzantine church on an island in Fethiye Gulf
