We demonstrate fabrication of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) structure inside the volume of SU-8 resist film by four beams interference. This structure, actually, is a 3D structure fabricated inside the film without sample scanning or laser beam steering. The mechanism of recording iii transparent dielectrics is discussed in terms of third harmonic generation, white light continuum, and thermal omission by "hot" electrons.

Three-dimensional recording by femtosecond pulses in polymer materials

Fabrication and characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) periodic structures, recorded inside the bulk of negative SU8 photoresist film by multiple-beam interference are reported. The recording was performed by ultrashort laser pulses of 150 fs duration with central wavelength of 800 nm, multiple beams were generated using a diffractive beam splitter. Intensity-dependent photomodification of the photoresist was initiated by multi-photon absorption. The development process removed the exposed regions of resist film, leaving free-standing 2D and 3D periodic dielectric structures. Detailed examination of the samples is presented, which reveals close resemblance between the features of the fabricated structures, and those of the light intensity distributions in the multiple-beam interference fields. The microfabrication method used is demonstrated to be suitable for obtaining of photonic crystal templates. Phase control of the constituent beams allowed to monitor and control the light interference pattern to be recorded. Possibility to record the diamond lattice using this method is examined and discussed.

We report on the fabrication and properties of quasi-two-dimensional photonic crystals (Phcs) with honeycomb lattices of dielectric rods in air. Photonic crystals, fabricated in silicon by electron beam lithography and dry-etching techniques, had the high aspect ratio of 12, corresponding to a rod height of about 7 mum. The optical transmission spectra of the samples measured in the 1.8-8 mum wavelength range, revealed pronounced features of photonic band dispersion, and a signature of a complete photonic band gap (PBG) centered at 2.3 mum wavelength. Applicability of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for easy and rapid fabrication of enzyme sensor chips, based on electrochemical detection, is examined. The sensor chip consists of PDMS substrate with a microfluidic channel fabricated in it, and a glass substrate with enzyme-modified microelectrodes. The two substrates are clamped together between plastic plates. The sensor chip has shown no leakage around the microelectrodes under continuous solution flow (34 mul/min). Amperometric response of the sensor chips developed in this work suggest that various types of enzyme sensors can be designed by using PDMS microfluidic channels. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. For many laser applications, information on irradiated laser power is important. However, direct measurement of laser power through a high numerical aperture objective lens is difficult in a laser microscope. In this article, we propose a method which use a solid immersion lens (SIL) for such measurements. A laser beam focused by an objective lens is introduced to the flat surface of a SIL, emitted through the spherical surface, and then detected. In this way the divergence of the laser beam is reduced, and as a result the detection efficiency of the laser power increases. From theoretical analysis, a Weierstrass-sphere type SIL was found to be an appropriate thickness for this propose. Transmittance of the SIL is evaluated for several refractive indeces. The validity of this method is confirmed experimentally. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Flexural rigidity of a single microtubule

Microtubules, which are flexible biopolymers, can be used for nanotechnology applications (e.g., nano-actuator) as they have a rigidity similar to that of plexyglass and other plastic materials. The flexural rigidity, or bending stiffness, of microtubules was measured using a laser trapping technique and dark-field microscopy. One end of a microtubule rod was chemically bound to a glass microsphere, while the other end was bound to a silica glass substrate. Then, the microsphere was laser-trapped and manipulated to exert three different deformation modes on the microtubule. The values of flexural rigidity for these deformations were between 10(-25) and 10(-23) Nm(2) as measured for the 5-25 mum length microtubules. The origin of the length dependence of the flexural rigidity of microtubules is discussed.

Several bonding techniques for the development of microchannel chip at room temperature were studied. An electrostatic interaction between poly-ion layers with opposite charge and a condensation of silane coupling agent was employed to bond two glass substrates. In former case, the bonding of the substrates was achieved by applying high electrical potential. On the other hand, the condensation of silane coupling agent could bond the two glass substrates at room temperature and atmosphere. It was confirmed that the microchannel developed using the silane coupling agent could work for flow channel without solution leak. Poly(dimethylsiloxane)(PDMS) substrate was also applied for chip development. As a result, it was confirmed that PDMS was a material for easy and rapid fabrication of microchannel chip integrated with film electrodes

We report a morphology-dependent resonance (MDR) laser emission of rhodamine-doped ellipsoidal microcavity of the poly(methylmethacrylate) particles. Elliptical particles showed different lasing properties: the lasing threshold, intramode spectral separation, mode intensity, and spectral position, when an excitation is pointed to the different locations on the particle. This differs from the well-understood MDR lasing in spherical microparticles. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

In this study, we demonstrate that the Au particle modified probe DNA monolayer can enhance the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) signal for measuring hybridization of unlabeled DNA molecules. The Au particles adsorbed on single stranded (ss)- and double stranded (ds)-DNA monolayers have different optical interaction with surface of Au thin film, and this difference induces the enhancement of the SPR signal.

We demonstrate a few examples of laser trapping and manipulation technique being applied for the measurements of small forces in the range of fN-pN and for laser microfabrication. We discuss prospective principles applicable for future nano/micro-mechanical tools. Elastic properties of microtubules of 24 nm in diameter were determined, a gold particle of 0.25 μm in diameter was laser trapped and manipulated. Paramagnetic microspheres were DNA-anchored to a glass substrate for measurement of elastic properties of DNA by evanescent light scattering. Also, a gold particle was attached to DNA and laser manipulated. The motion of the DNA molecule was controlled. The spring constant of the DNA was determined by using thermodynamical analysis of evanescent light scattering.
