Real three-dimensional microstructures fabricated by photopolymerization of resins through two-photon absorption

Effective energy windows for two-photon absorption (TPA) photopolymerization of resins were investigated and, with a properly selected laser pulse energy, exquisite three-dimensional (3D) microstructures with submicrometer spatial resolution were achieved. The results show the inherent utility of TPA in the fabrication of real 3D patterns. In particular, we propose and utilize a resin pre-exposure technique by which freely movable components affixed to an axle are built, demonstrating a new application of TPA in laser microfabrication. A polymer microchannel (width = 100 mu m and depth = 20 mu m) chip integrated with band Au electrodes (47 x 100 mu m) was fabricated on the basis of photolithography/etching and imprinting techniques, and its characteristic electrochemical responses have been demonstrated.

We fabricated the gold micro-electrode using the micromachining technology. Glucose oxidase (GOD) was immobilized on the gold micro-electrode by the thiol derivative. We succeeded in the development of the micro sensor which electrochemically detects the glucose using this GOD immobilized gold microelectrode. It was possible to detect 1-30mM glucose using this micro glucose sensor.

In recent years, electronic devices are miniaturized, and we wish to develop microactuator. Ni-Ti shape memory alloy is a material adapted to micro actuator as it can keep high power/weight ratio if it's miniaturized. So, a lot of studies have researched on this field. But, the research on the performance of thin films for actuator specifically did not reported frequently. Therefore, in our study, we researched recovery behavior of Ni-Ti shape memory alloy thin films; it is important for its practical application into microactuator to research on recovery force and response behavior.

Colloidal assemblies consisting of monotonic polystyrene microspheres with a controlled degree of ordering were fabricated, and exhibited rich spectral behaviors. Smooth and spike-modulated broad attenuation regions in transmission spectra were observed in highly disordered and partly disordered samples, respectively, in contrast to the narrow peaks observed in well-ordered photonic crystals. These properties are interpreted consistently by analyzing the variation of the volume of closely packed units.

High-quality three-dimensional polystyrene-air photonic crystal structures with particle diameters of 200, 270, and 340 nm were grown with a quasi-equilibrium evaporation technique. The effects of the removal of interval water were evident as a blueshift of peaks, enhancement of the transmission attenuation, and changes in the gap/midgap ratio. Frequency scaling and incidence-angle-dependent transmission were also investigated; both show good agreement with the numerical simulation. We report the recording of a three-dimensional (3D) pattern in bulk polymethyl metacrylate (PMMA) films by microexplosion induced by a tightly focused (numerical aperture of oil-immersion objective was 1.3) single laser shot. Recording was done by picosecond (ps) single-pulse irradiation at 532 nm and by femtosecond at a 400 nm wavelength. The light-induced damage threshold of PMMA was found at similar to 4 MW/cm(2) for ps damaging. Readout of the 3D pattern was carried out by the recording of the transmission and the photoluminescence (PL) of bits. We demonstrate the possibility exciting PL of the optically damaged area inside the PMMA by one- and two-photon absorption. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)03208-3].

Optically induced defects in vitreous silica

We report the observation of photoluminescence (PL) in optically damaged vitreous silica (v-SiO2) and its gradual decrease by annealing at temperature range from room temperature to 773 K. Optical damage was induced by tightly focused picosecond or femtosecond irradiation inside v-SiO2. FL bands at 280, 470 and 650 nm were observed. The PL can be excited by 250 nm irradiation, which corresponds to the absorption band of the oxygen vacancy, V-O. The decrease of PL with annealing is explained by structural modifications of the defects in the damaged area. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Annealing of GaN-InGaN multi quantum wells: Correlation between the bandgap and yellow photoluminescence

We report experimental data on photoluminescence (PL) annealing of metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) grown GaN-InGaN multi quantum wells (MQWs). The formation of phase separation in the InGaN quantum well layer was confirmed by PL mapping when the MQW was grown at 675 degrees C. Spatial distribution of the yellow (Y)-band PL correlated with the dislocation network in that the intensity of the PL was lowest at the grain boundaries. The activation energy of thermal quenching of the InGaN PL at 400 nm was found to be equal to that of the increase of Y-band PL at 550 nm. The origin of the Y-band is explained as a radiative donor-acceptor recombination.
