In this manuscript, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) packet wireless communication system is implemented towards constructing a testbed for cooperative wireless communication systems. The system is composed of software defined radio (SDR) with universal software radio peripheral (USRP) and GNU Radio. OFDM modulation is constructed by the 1/4 scale model of IEEE802.11a standard. The observed OFDM frequency spectrum is compared with the spectrum mask of IEEE802.11a standard so that windowing is required to agree with it. Furthermore, the estimated channel state information (CSI) is shown in amplitude and phase spectrum to compensate the multipath fading. The experimental results show that the received sensitivity of -59 dBm attains at the packet error rate (PER) of 1% when subcarriers are modulated by quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and the received sensitivity of -61 dBm attains at 1% PER when subcarriers are modulated by binary PSK (BPSK).

Bi-directional wireless relaying has been demonstrated to raise transmission throughput intensively as large as twice in throughput by applying physical layer network coding (PNC) when a pair of terminals exchange information via relay. With the aim to enhance the performance of relay system based on decode-and-amplify (DF) strategy, we propose a power control (PC) structure applied in Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) used PNC scheme. The PC structure can be realized by adding a simple filter, aiming to control the transmission power without increasing bit error rate (BER). It is proved that the proposed PC structure can significantly reduce both transmission power and BER of bi-directional MIMO relay system, showing better performance than THP used PNC without PC structure.

The more signal streams than receive antennas are spatially multiplexed in overloaded multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Spatial multiplexing which potentially enables wireless systems to achieve higher speed transmission. In overloaded MIMO systems, most conventional MIMO linear detectors have very poor transmission performance. In contrast with them, nonlinear detectors such as the maximum likelihood detector (MLD) achieve superior performance even in overloaded MIMO systems. On the other hand, MIMO receivers with virtual channels that achieve superior performance, even though the MIMO receiver can be implemented with much lower computational complexity than the MLD. Basically, the transmission signal vector is decomposed into a real signal vector and a rotation matrix in the receiver. The MIMO receiver with virtual channels comprises a linear detector to regenerate the real signal of the transmission signal and nonlinear detector to search the rotation matrix. The paper describes techniques to improve the real signal detection performance and the virtual channel detection performance. Performance of these techniques are evaluated by computer simulation.

In this paper, we propose a MIMO receiver for the 16QAM modulation scheme by trellis coding. In the proposed system, it have take advantage of the trellis coded 16QAM that captures as an integral multi-level modulation 16QAM and coding. It is an effective method in that it allows high-speed communication while has a coding gain. To detect the stream When the number of receive antennas is less than that of transmit antennas, the virtual channels are introduced in the proposed receiver. Furthermore, this paper proposed to apply a gain-factor for the proposes receiver to employ the lattice-reduction for the virtual channels. While the use of virtual channels improves the transmission performance, the lattice-reduction makes it possible to detect more signal streams. In this paper, I was evaluated by computer simulation for BER characteristics and multiplication cost of the proposed MIMO receiver.

In a multi-user MIMO system which can increase the spectral efficiency in wireless communications, MIMO preceding can reduce signal processing complexity and power consumption of mobile stations. In this paper, experimental results of the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) are reported. Mobile stations for a multi-user MIMO preceding system are implemented by using USRP. The universal hardware driver (UHD) is used in this implementation. An advantage of using UHD is that it makes easier to manage timing of USRP. In addition, as laboratory experiments of USRP and UHD, it is shown that its frequency stability, time resolution and the error vector magnitude performance during amplify and forward operation.

In wireless communications, a distributed antenna system (DAS) is a promising technique to increase the spectral efficiency. DAS consists of geographically distributed base station antennas, which enables to perform virtual MIMO transmission and achieve macro-diversity efficiency. DAS has many degrees of freedom such as antenna selection, clustering of antennas, and transmission schemes, and therefore it is complicated to analyze. In this paper, the cluster size in DAS is considered to be similar to the radius of cells in cellular systems. In clustering based on location, the coverage area of clusters and the area of base station antennas used for transmission can be set individually. The simulation results show that the optimal cluster size for base station antennas depends on the scheduling algorithm when analyzed in perspective of area spectral efficiency.

This paper proposes a novel scheme to estimate the imbalance of the RF devices included in RF analog Hilbert transformer in heterodyne multimode receivers with baseband AGC, which enables the receiver to receive signals in arbitrary frequency band with realistic hardware complexity. The performance of the estimation scheme is verified by computer simulation in terms of the root mean square (RMS) of the estimation error, and the distribution of the error. Furthermore, it is also shown that the performance of the proposed scheme is enhanced by feeding the estimated value back to the RF analog devices. The performance is compared with that of conventional techniques.

Cognitive radios are of interest because they are capable of high frequency utilization efficiency. For the cognitive radios, a multimode MIMO receiver based on heterodyne reception has been proposed. This paper proposes the complexity reduced receiver to achieve high performance by correcting Hilbert transformer imperfection at the intermediate frequency (IF) band. However, imperfection of the analog circuit at the feedback loop causes poor performance. Therefore, the scheme for correcting the imperfection of the analog circuit is proposed.

This paper presents an experimental setup of a multi-user MIMO linear precoding system. The experimental system consists of a base station with two antennas and two mobile stations. In this system, a two-way channel estimation technique is implemented in which mobile stations just send back the received signals along with their training sequences. In this technique, the base station can obtain the channel coefficients of both the uplink and the downlink. This two-way multiple-input multiple-output channel estimation technique has been pro- posed and mathematically analyzed in literature. Computer simulation results have been reported to identify the required hardware specifications for amplify and forward operation in mobile stations by examining the bit error rate performance. However, hardware implementation feasibility of this technique is not studied yet. In this paper, feasibility of a multi-user MIMO linear precoding system using two-way channel estimation technique is shown by in-lab experiments.

This paper proposes a new control scheme between IEEE 802.11 (WLAN) devices and IEEE 802.15.4 (Wireless Sensor Network) devices, operating in the same radio frequency band. The new control scheme employs a hybird - station (H-STA) which has both network device functions to improve the transmission quality. The proposed control scheme enables to ensure data transmission quality of WSN with little performance degradation of WLAN throughput performances by using RTS (Request To Send), CTS (Clear To Send) and CTS-to-self packets. Results of computer simulations show that the beacon failure probability of WSN is the value less than 10 % when the WLAN system consists of 15 stations with saturated data traffic.

Nowadays, cognitive radio draws attention because it can raise frequency utilization efficiency. For the cognitive radio, multimode receivers are required to make use of the empty frequency bands. On the other hand, MIMO spatial multiplexing is also focused on to increase transmission capacity. Moreover, the MIMO-MMSE receiver has been applied to the multimode reception. However, it is well known that performances of the MMSE filter is inferior to those of the other techniques. This paper proposes the structure of multimode MIMO-OSD receiver based on the heterodyne reception in order to improve BER performances. As a result of computer simulation, the proposed receiver can achieve superior BER performances even in the presence of strong imageband interference signals, and attain convergence within 200 symbols.

In this manuscript, a physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme, CoMP-PNC, is proposed for wireless distributed networks with coherent coordinated multi-point (CoMP). Wireless relaying could be done to reduce the transmission power of wireless stations in a CoMP cluster in which the carrier frequency and phase are synchronized at destination stations whereas the channel capacity will be reduced in the conventional wireless relaying due to the increase of number of hops. A CoMP-PNC scheme incorporating preceding and modulo encoding is applied for two-way relay channels in a CoMP cluster. The channel capacity is formulated for 802.11a/g-based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-QAM) singals in indoor environments.

Multi-user distributed antenna systems are studied to build wide area coverage radio communication systems under restriction on transmit power. To decrease transmit power, this paper proposes a power control algorithm for single-user distributed antenna systems as an initial study. The proposed algorithm is based on the Foschini-Miljanic's power control algorithm which is one of the most famous algorithm on distributed power control. This is because multi-user distributed antenna systems consist multiple CoMP clusters of base station antennas and mobile stations, and interference between CoMP clusters should be controlled in a decentralized way. A degree of freedom of transmit power on each base station antenna still exists because the proposed algorithm is only based on the SINR. In addition, the convergence condition for the proposed power control is derived. The performance of extended algorithm is evaluated through computer simulations.

In distributed antenna system (DAS), spectrum efficiency can be improved by using multiuser MIMO techniques. The computational complexity at mobile stations can be reduced by precoding techniques with channel state information. To extend DAS, BSs and MSs should be properly grouped into control clusters in order to reduce the computational complexity. Interference among clusters and the required transmit power depend on the clustering patterns. In this paper, a clustering method is proposed in order to reduce the transmit power. The performance of the proposed method is examined through computer simulations.

In multi-hop cooperative communication systems, multiple relay stations which are located between the source and destination stations transmit a packet cooperatively. Transmission quality can be improved by the transmit diversity gain. Recently, theoretical analysis, computer simulations and field trials are reported. On the other hand, network coding can improve channel efficiency in two-way relay transmission. By introducing network coding into multi-hop cooperative communication systems, packets can be transmitted bidirectionally and effectively. In this study, several relay control schemes are investigated by computer simulations.

In this manuscript, a simple and accurate estimation on performance of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) is presented. The performances obtained from Bianchi's analytical model of IEEE 802.11 DCF are compensated by means of (1) the number of consecutive successful packet transmissions and (2) the deferred slot time. The compensated performances including throughput, packet loss rate, and the average number of packet transmissions approximate to the simulation results with a high degree of accuracy under a number of conditions even when the minimum contention window is extremely small. As a result, the proposed estimation can be exploited to optimize the medium access control (MAC) parameters of IEEE 802.11 such that the throughput is maximized subject to a variety of QoS constraints.

In the down-link for mobile communications, there has been probrem that spatial multiplexing is limited because mobile terminal should be small while the number of receiving antenna restricts quantities of streams which can be multiplexed. Therefore, an architecture has been proposed which can decode transmitted PSK modulated signals when the number of transmitting streams ecxeeds the number of receiving antenna. This receiver utilize the idea called virtual channels which can double the number of antennas at the receiver virtually. In this manuscript, we introduce how to apply the idea called virtual channels to QAM modulated signals and compare various detection scheme by showing their BER performance and complexity of calcuration. Moreover, we propose additional scheme to improve BER performance of this detection scheme. The performance of the introduced architecture is verified using computer simulations.

Distortion cancellation for FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) equalizers in fast fading channels was proposed. The distortion canceller is designed to anticipate the fading distortion by subtracting a based channel impulse response from the channel impulse response. Then it eliminates the distortion from the received signal in order to apply the FFT equalizer. And by making this proposed circuit parallel, the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance was improved. We propose another parallel distortion cancellation scheme and show that BER leads to more than 5dB degradation in E_b/N_0 on BER=10^<-7> for multilevel modulations like 16QAM and 64QAM.

Additionally, iteration schemes on soft informations are effective for the virtual channel estimation. In this paper, we show some performances of the iteration schemes when the various rate and constraint length is used.

A heterodyne receiver with the Hilbert transformer is in principle known to cope with signals in arbitrary frequency bands. Moreover, the dual frequency conversion has been proposed to mitigate the interference due to the imperfection of actual Hilbert transformers. This paper evaluates the performance of the receiver where the frequency response of the desired band differs from that of the image band. Furthermore, we propose a moved scheme to improve the performance. The proposed scheme consists of the estimation of the Hilbert transformer's imperfection and the baseband linear filtering. Computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme achieves by 9dB better BER performance than the conventional scheme when CIR (Carrier-to-Interference Ratio) is -60dB and BER is 10'.

When the MIMO spatial multiplexed signals are decoded, conventional successive detector requires the same number of antennas at the receiver as that at the transmitter. In addition, the number of antennas that can be installed in the mobile terminals is limited. For these reason, in the down-link for mobile communication, it has been difficult to increase transmission capasity by spatial multiplexing. Therefore, the architecture has been proposed which can decode transmitted signals when the number of antennas at the transmitter ecxeeds that of at the receiver. This receiver can double the number of antennas at the receiver virtually. In this manuscript, we propose a soft input iteration scheme for improvement of this architecture. The performance of the proposed architecture is verified using computer simulations.

Various radio transmission systems have recently been commercialized. So, multiband/mode receiver which enable one RF chain to receive some frequency band is important. We proposed an architecture of MIMO receiver which enable multiband reception. It can simultaneously signal devision and cancel image-band interference. We adopt analogue Hilbert transformers to cancel image-band interference and MMSE criterion to devide MIMO signals. We also show performance of the proposed system by computer simulation. As a result, image-band interference can caused by some imperfection of Hilbert transformer can be completely canceled. Moreover, scheme of complexity reduction can be appeared.

In this paper, a network coding method in which a QoS control is incorporated is proposed to improve the system throughput of a two-hop wireless CSMA/CA relay network. In the case of non-QoS control, when many terminal stations transmit their data frames to each other via only one relay station, the wireless channel is dominated by the uplink from the terminal stations to the relay station. As a result, it deteriorates the system throughput because the relay station can hardly obtain the transmission right on such a wireless channel, and the wireless link from the relay station to the terminal stations will become a bottleneck. As a solution of this phenomenon, we propose the method of modifying the minimum contention window size in the relay station to provide its transmission priority. Furthermore we show that the proposed method improves the system throughput both with and without network coding by computer simulation.

Wireless multihop networks have been studied for the purpose of solution of digital divide and system capacity enhancement. On the other hand, a network coding scheme has attracted attention as a technology for throughput enhancement. In this paper, we clarify how noise and interference have effects on system throughput performances for two-hop wireless relay slotted ALOHA systems in the cases with and without network coding under one-to-many information sharing via the relay node. As a result, the throughput performances of one-to-many information sharing systems via the relay mode in the noise and interference environments can be evaluated analytically. In particular, we show the design criterion of the relay transmission probability for maximizing the throughput of systems with network coding.

Wireless access systems employing wireless relay nodes have been studied for removing degital devides and blind zone areas. On the other hand, network coding is a highly regarded technology to enhance the system throughput and to decrease the delay for wireless relay networks. In this manusprict, we propose a packet collison avoidance scheme for the relay nodes in which predetermined slots are assigned to the relay nodes to avoid any packet collisons between relay nodes. We evaluate throughput and delay of the coding packet transmission control schemes with the proposed packet collison avoidance scheme, and show that the proposed schemes can achieve lower delay as compared with the conventional schemes when throughput is higher. Also, we show that the poposed schemes can update higher throughput and lower delay by adapting the parameters of the proposed schemes to the previous throughput.

Wireless access systems employing wireless relay nodes have been studied for removing digital divides and blind zone areas. In the previous presentation, we evaluated the throughput in both cases of non-hidden end nodes and hidden end nodes via the relay node for two-hop wireless relay systems, in which all nodes employ CSMA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access) protocol, both without and with network coding. In this manuscipt, we investigate the effect of the RTS/CTS (Request To Send/Clear To Send) mechanism on throughput in case of hidden end nodes via the relay node by applying the PPDU (PLCP Protocol Data Unit) frame format, the IFS (Interframe Space) time, and the slot time of IEEE802.11a, where PLCP is the abbreviated form of Physical Layer Convergence Protocol. As the analytical result, we clarify that the high conding gain can be achieved by RTS/CTS and network coding regardless of the increase of the overhead.

An algorithm to cancel the image-band interference for Multi-mode/band receivers with baseband AGC is proposed in this paper. The algorithm proposed here estimates the phase error and the amplitude error of the analog Hilbert transformer with correlation matrices. Furthermore, filtering is employed here to improve the estimation accuracy. This paper also shows the error estimation performance of the proposed algorithm and the BER of the interference cancellation by computer simulation under the circumstance of CIR=-20dB, and compares them with that of the conventional algorithm.

The method of wireless access is introduced to construct access networks in the circumstances that wiring network is intractable. Network coding is a highly regarded technology to enhance system capacity of wireless relay networks. By coding and transmitting packets from different sources at the relay station, the system is able to achieve higher throughput. In this manuscript, we propose an analytical model to compute the throughput of a two-hop wireless relay network in which stations employ CSMA/CA protocol and network coding on their MAC layer. In this manuscript, we propose an initial acquisition method for detecting channel states on in-home broadband power line communication. It has been considered that the time fluctuation in the transfer function has been smaller than that in the noise on the in-home broadband PLC. However, we have observed that the extensively and rapidly time fluctuation across the whole frequency band appears in the in-home PLC at the half of power cycle intervals while connecting some switching power supply devices. Such largely and quickly time fluctuation makes the extensive degradation in performance of in-home PLC. Therefore, we should estimate the timing of time fluctuation and synchronize the in-home PLC systems with the estimated time fluctuation. We evaluate the performance of the proposed initial acquisition method under impulsive noise environments. As a result, we show that the proposed method can achieve the requirement for communication reliability.

Indoor power line communication (PLC) is an attractive way to realize an in-home network. The bit-loaded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is effective for PLC to achieve high bit rate by optimizing subcarrier modulations and code rate of a forward error correcting (FEC) code. The precise CNR information for each subcarrier should be estimated for achieving high bit rate. In particular, the subcarrier CNR information should be done within a short pilot symbol length because streaming services of voice and video are provided on in-home PLC. At first, this manuscript shows that the precise subcarrier CNR estimation for all the range of SNR cannot be achieved within the target pilot symbol length. Next, we propose three methods to achieve target BER within the target pilot-symbol length. First one is to smooth the estimated subcarrier CNR curve, second one is to give a margin of subcarrier CNR threshold for determining subcarrier modulation, and last one is to minimize the estimated subcarrier CNR locally. As a result of evaluating these three proposed methods, it is shown that the local minimization can achieve the best performances among them. Furthermore, we show the relationship between the pilot symbol length and the range of local minimization.

MIMO spatial multiplexing system requires same number of receiving antennas or more than transmitting antennas. Our proposed successive receiver can double the number of receiving antennas virtually. Therefore the receiver can decode transmitted signals even if the number of transmitting antennas exceeds that of receiving antennas. In this manuscript, the effects of factors in the proposed receiver on system error rate are evaluated. In addition, we propose phase sequence coding in order to improve performance of the receiver. Then, it is evaluated that phase sequence coding can improve bit error rate performance of the proposed receiver.

With OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) communication system, the BER (Bit Error Rate) quality is good in multi-path fading channels, but the quality gets worse markedly in fast fading channels that the fading change is very fast. So we evaluate the parallel OFDM demodulation method. In the method, we demodulate OFDM symbols with the channel impulse responses of different time and select the reasonable symbols from the demodulated symbols and correspond. And we propose the two distortion cancellation methods of cancelling the fading change with the symbols demodulated. The one method is the parallel time domain distortion canceller. With the method, we cancell directly the chanege that the received signals has. The next one is the parallel frequency domain distortion canceller. With the method, after we do FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) the received signals, we cancell the interference. We evaluate these qualties with the computer simulation.

We have investigated on a multimode/multiband receiver with an RF receiver chain. Basically, an RF band pass filter at the RF front end prevents multimode/band communications because of little flexibility of the BPF. Therefore, we have tried to design multimode/multiband receivers with an ultra wide band RF BPF. While pass-band of the RF-BPF is widened, an IF-BPF with relatively narrow pass-band is applied in the receiver, which is so called "heterodyne receiver". As is known, however, the heterodyne receiver with the ultra wide band RF BPF suffers from severe image-band interference. Therefore, we have proposed dual frequency conversion heterodyne receiver with some image-band interference cancellers to overcome the problem. In this report, principle of image-band interference cancellation is briefly explained and challenges for implementing the imageband interference cancellers are described.

The in-home broadband power line communication (PLC) is drawing attention to us lately. The broadband PLC has regulation issues for the coexistence with shortwave wireless systems. Therefore, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is adopted for the broadband PLC. On the other hand, the power line channels suffer from frequency selective fading. It is effective to load appropriate bits on each subcarrier in the OFDM for PLC. In this paper, we propose a bit loading algorithm that maximizes the bit rate by optimizing not only the bit quantity on each subcarrier but also the whole code rate of the forward error correction (FEC) code subject to constraints on the total bit error rate (BER) and power on each subcarrier. Furthermore, we investigate orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) as a multiple access scheme on the in-home power line networks. We show that the proposed OFDMA scheme is superior to a time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme from the viewpoint of throughput by computer simulations.

The indoor power line communication (PLC) suffers from impulsive noise generated by home appliances. The impulsive noise can be described as the bursty noise among several symbols for high-rate PLC employing M-ary modulation. Such bursty and impulsive noise can be widely applied as noise on a hidden Markov model for high-rate PLC. In this manuscript, we investigate the iterative decoding of M-ary modulation signals over hidden Markov noise channels. We evaluate the iterative decoding performance for structured LDPC codes, which are exploited for the digital broadcasting standard DVB S.2 of ETSI, and M-ary QAM (quadrature amplitude modualtion) signals. We clarify the importance of detecting metric for hidden Markov noise channels and investigate the difference between Gray mapping and binary mapping in decoding performance and the effectiveness of bit interleaver.

In this paper, we propose an initial acquisition method for channel synchronization on in-home broadband power line communication (PLC). Such largely and quickly time fluctuation makes the extensive degradation in performance of in-home PLC devices. Therefore, we should estimate the timing of time fluctuation and synchronize the in-home PLC systems with the estimated time fluctuation. We evaluate the performance of the proposed initial acquisition method under impulsive noise environments and investigate its feasibility for the real in-home PLC.

In this manuscript, we propose a coding timeout control scheme which can enhance the throughput and reduce the delay for wireless relay slotted ALOHA systems with network coding. We evaluate the throughput and delay of the proposed scheme and compare them with these of an equal control scheme which does not distinguish the coding and native packets in the relay node. As a result of computer simulation we show that the coding timeout control scheme which selects the timeout values adaptively with throughput of the relay node is superior to a equal control scheme in delay performances.

Various radio transmission systems have recently been commercialized. So, multiband/mode receiver which enable one RF chain to receive some frequency band is important. We proposed an architecture which reduce the circuit size to concurrently cancel co-channel interference and image-band interference. We adopt analogue Hilbert transformers to cancel image-band interference and adaptive array antenna to cancel co-channel interference. Furthermore, we can miniaturize the receiver by mixing all signals at the IF stage and reduce complexty by new algorithm. We also show performance of the proposed system by computer simulation. As a result, image-band interference can caused by some imperfection of Hilbert transformer can be completely canceled. Moreover, co-channel interference can be simultaneously canceled.

The FFT equalizer suppresses channel fluctuation of received signals, so the accuracy of the channel estimation considerably influences the performance of the FFT equalizer. Therefore, we propose a channel estimation by estimated transmitted signals for the parallel distortion cancellation. Besides, we analyze the degradation of FFT Equalizers for Parallel Distortion Cancellation in fast fading channel, and show the performance of the FFT equalizer with the proposed channel estimation by computer simulation.

Distortion cancellation for FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) equalizers was proposed that mitigates degradation caused by fast fading. The distortion canceller suppresses fluctuation of received signals fed to the FFT equalizer by subtracting some signals. Even though, those signals are made of demodulated signals of the FFT equalizer convoluted with channel impulse response, the demodulated signals are too erroneous to suppress fluctuation which causes serious performance degradation in severe fading channels. This paper proposes parallel distortion cancellation for FFT equalizers which is able to improve the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance in fast fading channels. In this cancellation, channel matrixes made up of the impulse responses at different times are used for FFT equalization and suppression of the fluctuation. Finally, its BER performance is evaluated by computer simulation.

In-home PLC (Power Line Communicaiton) is one of the most attractive in-home networkings. However, there are a lot of technical issues for the realization of PLC with hight rate and high reliability. These issues include the influence of frequency selective and linear periodically time-variant (LPTV) channel synchronized with commercial power supply. In particular, we show that some kinds of switching power cevices impact deep and deterministic time selectivity for power line channels. The combination of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and bit loading algorithm is a powerful tool to increase the bit rate or reliability for quasi-static frequency selective channels including power line channels. However, a quick response will be required for the execution of bit loading algorithm since power line channels are synchronized with commercial power supply. In this paper, we propose a fast bit loading algorithm based on the fractional knapsack algorithm to enhance the bit rate under the condition that the transmitted power is constant. Furthermore, we evaluate the achievable bit rate of the proposed algorithm for the SNR over a power line channel and compare it with the achievable bit rate based on water filling theory.

The regulation on power line communication (PLC) has been eased in Japan and the frequency band between 2 and 30MHz can be exploited for in-home PLC. Several commercial PLC equipments are available in the market. Almost all PLC equipments take on a form of PLC adapters interconverting Ethernet signals and power line signals. We can construct in-home network by these PLC adapters easily because there are many power outlets in every room. However there are various factors destabilizing the communication among PLC adapters. These factors involve time-varying channel responses and noise characteristics synchronized with commercial power supply. In particular, we present a number of examples of more significant variations of the channel response affected by compact AC adapters. In this report, we show that the PLC adapters suffer from the time-varying channel responses and analyze their influence on the communication quality of the PLC adapters.

When we realize multimode receivers using heterodyne reception, the image-band interference arises and deteriorates transmission performance significantly because of removal of radio frequency filters. Therefore, cancellation methods using Hilbert transform have been proposed, however, this method cannot remove the interference completely because of imperfectness of the Hilbert transformer. Then, in this report, we propose a scheme to cancel imperfectness of the transformer with cancellation matrix in intermediate frequency. In this scheme, we use downconverion not only to receive the desired signal but also the image-band signal and estimate the cancellation matrix using correlation matrix of these two signals. We describe that this scheme has superior estimation and cancellation performance.

Indoor PLC (Power Line Communication) is one of the attractive in-home networkings. However, there are a lot of technical issues for the realization of PLC with high rate and high reliability. In this paper, we apply OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system to a linear periodically time-variant channel measured from an indoor power line channel. Furthermore, we propose a time-frequency adaptive modulation system in which multivariate QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) based on the pouring theory is allocated to each subcarrier. We evaluate channel capacities of the periodically time-variant, multiplexing, binary symmetric channels (BSCs) obtained from each adaptive modulation, Gray coding, additive white Gaussian noise, and symbol decision.

Multimode receivers is investigated to use number of wireless systems with one receiver. When we construct multimode receivers using heterodyne reception, the imageband interference arises and deteriorates transmission characteristics significantly because of removal of radio frequency filter. Therefore, cancellation methods have been heretofore proposed, but they have problems that convergence properties are not good. To solve this problem, we proposed a cancellation method with good convergence characteristics, in which we calculate the weighting addition of baseband signals of the desired signal and the imageband signals. We can apply this method in rayleigh fading channels, but we found that the bit-error rate characteristics will deteriorate. Then, in this report, I describe that we can realize a cancellation method which has good convergence properties without deterioration of the bit-error rate characteristics with using the RLS algorithm.

Orthogonal STBC causes a problem, transmission rate decreasing with the multiplication of antennas. Using Quasi-Orthogonal STBC, while decoding is complicated, we can solve this problem. Moreover, allocating the redundancy of FEC to the rate difference between Orthogonal STBC and Quasi-Orthogonal STBC in order to achieve higher quality communication of the same rate with Orthogonal STBC. This paper proposes a scheme to decode Quasi-Orthogonal STBC and convolutional codes at the same time, and estimate its scheme in the aspect of BER.

To suppress cochannel interference and receive desired transmitted signals properly, adaptive array antennas is so useful technique. Recently, control algorithms of adaptive array antennas that suppress interference waves more than receive antennas have been studied. In those algorithms, it has been showm that LBER (least bit error rate) has better bit error rate property than LMS (least mean square). In this paper, I apply LBER to control adaptive array antennas and verify the property in cochannel interference environment and analyze the operation.

Frequency domain equalization for single carrier transmission systems has drawn much interest because it achieves superior performance even in severe multipath fading channels with the assist of cyclic prefix (CP), which is attached at the top and tail of an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) frame. However, the frequency domain equalizer can not keep the performance unless channel impulse response is regarded constant during the FFT frame. In other words, performance of the equalizer degrades due to fast fading channels. This means the additional noise at the output of the equalizer is generated by fast fading, equivalently. Therefore, MMSE (Minimum Mean Square Error) channel estimation is desired to take the noise into account in order to resist the performance degradation. This paper proposes an MMSE channel estimation scheme based on an iterative noise estimation scheme which is able to estimate the additional noise and the additive Gaussian noise.

To suppress cochannel interference and receive desired transmitted signals properly, adaptive array antennas is so useful technique. In control algorithms of adaptive array antennas, algorithms that minimize its cost function mean square error have been studied and it has been shown that these algorithms can suppress interference waves less than receive antennas. But recent study suggested more appropriate algorithms that minimize its cost function BER (bit error rate). These algorithms are mainly suggested for binary phase shift keying. In this paper, I propose AMBER and LBER for quadreture phase shift keying and verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in cochannel interference environment through computer simulations.

Multimode receivers which can receive signals of many systems get the attention, because it enables to reduce the size of terminal. In this paper, we propose a constitution method of multimode receiver which uses heterodyne system. We employe SS (Spread Spectrum) system which used in the third-generation mobile communication system. In general, the miniaturization of RF (Radio Frequency) architecture is important issue because multimode receiver needs system specific RF architecture. When we deploy RF band BPF (Band Pass Filter) in the receiver, we cannot receive all RF signal. Because of this, we propose a new architecture which implement blind signal processing of image-band interference cancel and code acquisition without RF band BPF. This architecture is confirmed in the presence of CIR (Carrier to Interference Ratio)=-40dB.

This paper proposes a maximum likelihood sequence cstimatkm (MLSE) in multibeam interference cancellation over CCI (Co-channel interference) channels. A likelihood function which is essential in MLSE is derived in multichannel systems which consist of radio propagation channels and space time multibeam arrays although a certain requirement is needed through the derivation. To estimate the maximum likelihood sequence in any conditions such as mobile communication channels, the beam forming criterion which satisfies the requirement is described. In addition, it is shown that the noise variance existing in the likelihood function can be estimated. The performance of the proposed scheme, a multibeam interference with MLSE, is verified by computer simulation that has superior BER performance to the single beam space time adaptive array and better performance by 2〜3 dB than the multibeam interference canceller with hard decision over CCI channels in mobile communication systems.

This paper proposes a novel multibeam interference canceller which can achieve high transmission performance in multiuser environments over mobile communication channels. In addition to this, multibeam order extended fast algorithm for the multibeam interference canceller is proposed that can be implemented with less computational complexity than RLS (Recursive Least Squares) algorithm. In spite of the little computational complexity, the proposed algorithm attains rapid initial acquisition same to RLS algorithm. Although the multibeam interference canceller has several kind of tap vectors which define the directivity patterns of the multibeam, the multibeam interference canceller based on the multibeam order extended fast algorithm can estimate these tap vectors through only one Kalman gain vectors update. This is why the multibeam interference canceller based on the multibeam order extended fast algorithm can be implemented with little computational complexity. The the multibeam interference canceller based on the multibeam order extended fast algorithm achieves the rapid convergence same to theoretical upper bound and has superior performance by 6dB to the conventional decision feedback adaptive array.

The application of adaptive arrays is widely paid attention. Although its application to CDMA systems has been considered intensively, spatial signal processing achieved by an adaptive array and dispreading of received signals were accomplished separately. The authors proposed an adaptive array which achieves two different types of signal processing, mentioned above, simultaneously based on CMA. However, it can not work in multi-user system, even though the proposed scheme achieves full-blind signal processing, . In this paper, we propose to employ the proposed scheme in CDMA multi-user system by setting a spreading code as an initial weight of CMA. The performance under fading environment is examined through computer simulations.

Adaptive arrays have been proposed in which microwave analog beamforming and adaptive control are combined, in order to reduce both a complexity and a cost of an adaptive array. Besides, adaptive arrays based on spatial and temporal signal processing is known to be effective in high speed mobile communication systems such as mobile multimedia communication systems, since transmitted signals has to suffer from severe multipath fading. Therefore, this paper describes how to extend the adaptive arrays with microwave bcamforming to those based on spatial and temporal signal processing. In addition, it is proposed to apply M-CMA to adaptive arrays with microwave beamforming based on spatial and temporal signal processing.

An adaptive array antenna based on combination of digital signal processing and micro-wave signal processing has been proposed, which makes both price and hardware scale of an adaptive array antenna system lower. This paper proposes novel algorithms such as "M-Power algorithm"and "M-CMA", which are suitable for the adaptive array antenna. These algorithm can control the antenna directivity pattern of the array-antena without monitoring the received signals fed from antenna elements. Moreover, M-CMA can also control the null of its directivity pattern. The beampatterns of the adaptive array antenna based on the two algorithm are verified in the equivalent low pass systems by computer simulations. Furthermore, the adaptive array antennas based on the adaptive algorithms are examined to have superior performance.

An adaptive array concept with microwave signal processing is presented. The array weighting and signal combining are carried out on the microwave stage, while the decision and weight control are executed by DSP. Unlike conventional DBFs, it does not necessitate numbers of frequency converters and analog-to-digital converters but only one of each. The signal combining before A/D conversion offers 21 significantly wider dynamic range than DBFs. Also proposed hereby is a novel electronically steerable passive array radiator antenna or ESPAR antenna. Thanks to the varactor-loaded passive radiators, it offers full 360-degree beam steering, complete elimination of phase shifters, and single-port feeding.

We have proposed a new concept of kaleidoscopic antenna, we call it "software antenna, " which pursues a realization of required performance under minimum software/hardware resources. The software antenna instantly reconfigures itself adapting its software and hardware to changes in the time-varying radio-environment. In this paper, we describe how to categorize the radio-environment which is one of the most important functions of the antenna. Relation between categorized envrionments and adaptive signal processing algorithms is discussed.

A novel adaptive algorithm, "Order extended fast algorithm", is proposed that is suitable for adaptive arrays with decision feedback equalization which is indispensable for high speed mobile communication systems. The proposed algorithm has fast acquisition performance, since this algorithm gives a solution of least square estimation recursively as well as RLS(Recursive Least Squares) algorithm, basically. In spite of this, the proposed algorithm requires much less operational complexity than RLS algorithm because of its feature of updating a gainvector in contrast with updating a correlation matrix in RLS. As tap length of the adaptive array becomes larger, operational complexity reduction efficiency becomes higher. Finally, it is verified that the proposed algorithm can achieve fast convergence and have superior BER performance by computer simulations.

A Highspeed MLSE(Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) Equalizer LSI has been developed. The LSI offsets a degradation caused by delayed signal, in case the difference of the arrival time is within 1 symbol duration. It realizes 2 branch combining diversity reception. The LSI consists of 70k gates, and operates at the power supply voltage of 3.3V. Performance test under 2 ray Rayleigh fading condition using a 6.144Mbit/s-QPSK Modem shows that the LSI limits the floor of the Bit Error Rate lower than 10^<-5> and 10^<-6>, with and without diversity reception respectively. The performance test using 54.912Mbit/s-QPSK Modem shows the usefulness of the LSI at the higher speed communication. Power consumption of the chip, which is proportional to bit rate, is 170mW at the bit rate of 10Mbit/s.

The performances of anti-multipath techniques such as a multibranch selection diversity, an adaptive array antenna and transversal combining decision Feedback equalizer(TC-DFE) are analyzed by computer simulation. The way to approximate the bit error rate functions of both the adaptive array antenna and the TC-DFE each of which has superior performance over delay dispersive channels are explained. According to a empirical equations of propagation parameters estimation and the above function, the equalization is more significant than array antennas in mobile communication systems with higher than 6Mbit/s.

In high speed digital mobile communication systems, techniques to combat ISI (inter-symbol-intereference) caused by the delay spread in fading channels are required to improve BER performance. We propose complexty reduction methods for an adaptive MLSE equalizer which is a strong candidate to limit the degradation from the ISI. The equalizer based on the proposed methods is developed using FPGAs (field Programmable Gate Arrays) and verified to be fabricated with about 40kgate transistors. The equalizer is experimentally evaluated to suppress BER floor below 10^<-5> and achieve 10dB implicit diversity gain in a multipath fading channel with delay spread equal to 650nsec and synchronize in 8 symbols.

An adaptive equalizer, which has multi-DSP structure and can operate at the information rate of 512kbit/s, is developed. With this equalizer, experimental investigation is taken place under the condition of bit rate of 1.536Mbit/s to show the performance of adaptive equalizer whose calculation size is reduced. The experimental system has 2branch diversity receiver structure. In this report, two kinds of equalizer algorithm are investigated on the calculation size and its performance. As to the calculation size, both of them are a forth to a fifth as large as that of reference. With these algorithms, the degradation of CNR from reference is less than 1.5dB at the point of BER=10^<-4>, under 2ray or 6ray Rayleigh fading channel model whose Doppler frequency of 10Hz and delay spread of 500ns.

We have proposed a novel non-linear precoding with gain equalization functionality for alleviating high computational complexity caused by an application of multilevel modulations. The proposed non-linear precoding reduces computational complexity of the relays to one several hundreds of the original complexity. A new coded modulation for multilevel modulations has been proposed to improve the transmission performance. The proposed coded modulation achieves a gain of about 2dB at the BER of 1.0E-4, when the 16QAM or the 256QAM is applied. A new relay terminal selection has been proposed for maximizing the transmission performance in the channel where lots of relay terminals are scattered around the terminals. The proposed terminal selection achieves a gain of 13dB at the BER of 1.0E-3.

The signal separation algorithm extracts the power component and the phase component on the center frequency of the desired signal by the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) as a feature value from the time-continuous frequency characteristics of the overlapping received signals. The desired signal is restored by multiplying this feature value by the power component and phase component of the reference signal. The performance of this algorithm was evaluated for various modulation schemes by calculation and experiments and its effectiveness was shown. In addition, we have newly proposed a feature value demodulation method that can improve the separation / demodulation performance. It has been shown that when the number of multi-values becomes large, a remarkable effect appears, and for example, it becomes possible to separate and demodulate 16QAM signals which could not be separated by the conventional technology.

High speed wireless communication is achieved by increasing the number of transmit signal streams transmitted simultaneously. Actually, it is almost impossible to get the number of the streams more than that of the receive antennas due to prohibitive computational road of the receiver. This research project proposed generalized rotation matrices that make the complexity of the receiver flexible. In fact, the complexity can be reduced to about 1/100 of that of the original receiver by the proposed technique. The proposed technique allows the number of the simultaneously transmit signals to be three times or four times as many as that with conventional receivers. We considered iterative detection combined with the proposed technique to improve the transmission performance. We have proposed a technique to reduce the computational complexity in MIMO physical layer network coding where the number of received signals at the relay is more than that of the receive antennas.

This research studies adaptive transmission and frequency offset estimation for sensor collaborative beam forming. In addition, power consumption reduction effect with the beam forming is evaluated by computer simulation.
A sensor collaborative beam forming method with adaptive transmission is proposed in which collaborative sensor selection and beam forming are performed according to obtained reception quality in a receiving sensor. The simulation result with the proposed method shows that total power consumption of the beam forming with 5 collaborative sensors can be reduced by 60%. The result also shows that offset frequency among transmitting and collaborative sensors can be estimated at practical accuracy even under co-channel interference.

I have proposed a new detector configuration that is able to increase the user throughput in downlinks of wireless communication systems where the number of receive antennas is much less than that of transmit antennas. The proposed detector applies an idea of virtual channels that makes it possible to introduce linear signal processing detectors in the non-linear signal processing detector. Hence, the proposed detector is much less complex than the original non-linear signal processing detector, although the proposed detector achieves the theoretical upper bound in transmission performance. Moreover, I have proposed iterative receiver that consists of the proposed detector and decoder of forward error correction coding. It is confirmed that the proposed iterative receivers achieve more superior transmission performance.

This study showed that transmission priority control achieves optimal throughput performances of slotted ALOHA multi-hop wireless communication systems with network coding methods by computer simulations and theoretical analyses. Furthermore, computer simulations and theoretical analyses reveal the effects of thermal noise and radio interferences from other radio systems on the throughput performances of our systems. For home area multi-hop wireless networks, which are composed of the IEEE 802. 11 standard based wireless LANs, the throughput performances and delay performances are improved by the novel control schemes of CWmin and AIFSN. Moreover, these schemes enable the QoS control of VoIP(Voice over IP). Computer simulations show the good performances of the proposed QoS control scheme.

Nowadays, block-wise signal processing with FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) is widely used in wireless communication systems. But, block-wise signal processing degrades seriously in fast time varying channels. This research program proposes a novel scheme that mitigates the performance degradation in such channels. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed scheme achieves superior performance in fast time varying channels with 0.25 of the maximum Doppler frequency normalized by block size, f_DT.
