An Isolated Bi-directional DC-DC Soft Switching Converter for Super Capacitor Based Energy Storage Systems

In recent years, power electronic energy storage systems using super capacitor bank have been widely studied and developed for the electronic vehicles. In this paper, a full-bridge/centertapped push-pull with active clamp circuit based soft switching bidirectional DC-DC converter and its control method are presented and discussed. From the results of basic experimental demonstration, switching losses in the active switches are drastically reduced by ZCS/ZVS operation with the assistance of newly added active clump circuit, as well as ZVS operation with lossless snubber capacitor in high-voltage primary side.

A Novel Detection Method of Active and Reactive Currents in Single-Phase Circuits Using PLL Circuit

This paper proposes a novel detection method of active and reactive currents in single-phase circuits. This method uses only two multipliers and LPFs for detecting active and reactive currents with a PLL circuit. In the proposed method the fundamental active-reactive component in single-phase circuits can be detected by LPFs in the time domain like the instantaneous active-reactive power theory in three-phase circuits. The basic principle of the proposed detection method is discussed in detail, and then confirmed by digital computer simulation. Digital computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can detect the active-reactive current in single-phase circuits in the time domain.

A novel prototype of a soft-switching PWM DC-DC converter is presented in this paper. This converter consists of a half-bridge circuit assisted with an active edge resonant snubber for Zero Current Soft-switching (ZCS) commutation, and a current doubles rectifier linked with a high-frequency transformer. With the ZCS scheme and the circuit topology proposed here, the soft switching operation can be achieved for the wide range of output power under a constant switching frequency. The converter operation and characteristics are demonstrated with simulation results, and its feasibility is verified with experimental results using its 1.2kW-35kHz prototype.

This paper proposes a new current balancer in single-phase three-wire secondary distribution systems using the correlation coefficients. The components of the load currents correlative to the primary side voltage waveform, which correspond to the active currents, are detected in each feeder, then the non-active and unbalanced-active components are compensated on the source side. The balanced currents with unity power factor are obtained in each feeder. The basic principle of the proposed method is discussed in detail, and then confirmed by digital computer simulation. A proto-type experimental system is constructed and tested. Experimental results demonstrate that the balanced source currents with unity power factor are obtained in spite of unbalanced load currents.

This paper proposes a new method of compensating harmonic currents under the soft start in wind power generation systems using the hybrid filter, which consists of a passive and small-rated active filters. For the fundamental component, the passive filter behaves a phase-leading capacitor. The small-rated active filter compensates the harmonic currents under the soft start. The basic principle of the proposed compensator is discussed, and then confirmed by digital computer simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results demonstrate that the source currents become sinusoidal waveforms under the soft start.

A bidirectional DC-DC converter for supercapacitor-based energy storage systems in advanced electric vehicles is proposed in this letter. This converter consists of a half-bridge and current-fed push-pull circuit linked with a high frequency transformer, which is well applicable to the low voltage/high current charge and discharge of the supercapacitor. The experimental results of the prototype system prove the effective properties of the proposed topology in terms of a low device-conduction loss and a low switching surge.

This paper presents a new circuit topology of full-bridge soft-switching PWM inverter linked DC-DC power converter composed of conventional full-bridge high frequency PWM inverter with high frequency transformer and an active quasi-resonant snubber consisting of an additional power switching device in series with DC busline and a lossless capacitor in parallel with DC busline. Under this proposed high frequency soft-switching PWM inverter linked DC-DC converter, four power switches in the full-bridge arms and DC busline series switch can achieve ZVS at turn-off commutation. By developing the advanced soft-switching PWM high frequency inverter type DC-DC converter, although the conduction power loss of DC busline series power switch increases a little, the total turn-off switching loss of full-bridge high frequency inverter power modules can be sufficiently lowered more and more in the higher frequency range of 60kHz. As a result, when the switching frequency of high frequency inverter power stage using IGBT power modules is designed so as to be more than about 10kHz, the more the switching frequency of inverter increases, the more this high frequency soft-switching DC-DC converter has remarkable advantage as for the power conversion efficiency as compared with the conventional hard-switching PWM inverter DC-DC converter. Its practical effectiveness of high power density and high performance is actually proved for TIG arc welding equipment in industry.

Characteristic Evaluations of Three-Phase AC-AC Direct Converter with PFC Function

This paper presents a soft switching duty factor controlled AC-AC direct conversion circuit for high frequency Induction Heated applications, which have unity power factor and sinewave line current shaping functions. The proposed utility frequency AC-high frequency AC direct inverter as direct step-up frequency changer for converting commercial low frequency AC (LFAC) into high frequency AC (HFAC) more than 20kHz can be composed of minimum circuit components for resonant pars filter and diodes, which is possible to implement effective miniaturization, low cost, reliability, downsizing because of the non-electrolytic capacitor (at zero voltage soft switching commutation scheme). This paper describes the operating principle and its unique features of LFAC-HFAC soft switching PWM direct conversion circuit. Its utility AC side sinewave current quality and unity power factor correction characteristics are evaluated and discussed from an experiment point of view. Its practical effectiveness of this direct frequency changer is proven for high frequency induction heated appliances in home and business usages.
