20世紀後半に九州地方の座頭(盲僧)の伝承に関して、主に兵藤裕己によって収録された、数百に及ぶ録音・映像資料は、口頭伝承の生成・変容といった、語り物文芸の本質に関わる問題を解明し、日本における声の文化の形成・歴史的展開(日本の古典的な語り物文芸である『平家物語』や説経節『俊徳丸』『小栗判官』等の成立・変容、語り物のジャンルからジャンルへの移行等)を理解する上で重要な手掛かりとなっている。これらの録音・映像資料の分析に基づく本研究の目的は、次の通りであった。第一に、座頭による語り物の生成・変容の仕組みを解明すること、第二に、座頭による語り物文芸の特徴と、素材 ・形式・音楽構造という点で共通性を持つその他の語り物ジャンルとの関係を解明し、日本の語り物文化史における位置付けを明確にすることである。
本研究では、まず、2019年4月から6月の間に、座頭による宗教儀礼の一つである『ワタマシ』を対象とし、語り物文芸における「暗記」と「再構成」を巡る諸問題を中心とした研究課題に取り組み、口承文化における宗教テキストの実態を明らかにした。次に、7月から12月の間に、座頭による『一ノ谷』及びその後編となる『小敦盛』を対象とし、座頭の語り物文芸における平家物の由来とその特徴を巡る研究課題に取り組み、座頭のレパートリーにおける平家物とその他の語り物ジャンルとの関係を解明した。また、1月から3月の間に、『俊徳丸』『小栗判官』等の座頭による説経物を対象とし、口頭伝承の再構成の仕組みを明らかにし、伝統性と語り手のオリジナリティーを巡る諸問題について論証した。
当初2年間と計画されていた研究期間は、ハルミルザエヴァ ・サイダの就職のため短縮したが、ハルミルザエヴァはこれまでの研究によって得られた研究成果をEAJS、AJLS、盲僧琵琶研究会等の大会・研究会に参加し、国内外で報告してきた。
