    The importance of high school-university articulation has been recognized in recent years. To ensure a smooth transition for students from high school to university, it is essential for university English teachers to understand the English activities in which students have engaged in high school. Focusing on first-year students entering a regional national university (n = 1396) in spring 2023, who spent their three years of high school life amid the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper aims to describe their experiences with English class activities in high schools. Findings from both quantitative and qualitative studies have revealed that most students had predominantly traditional learning and writing activities, with limited exposure to speaking and interactive learning activities. The paper discusses possible explanations for these experiences in English classes and offers cautions for university English teachers to consider when designing their own class activities.

    In recent years, university English courses in Japan taught by non-Japanese teachers of English (NJTEs) are becoming increasingly more common. The main objective of the present study was to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate how NJTEs subjectively perceived their in-class teaching roles. Through a comparison with Japanese university teachers of English, the findings revealed that NJTEs perceived themselves as taking the roles of “a facilitator (a supporter and guide)” and "a course/ material designer" more strongly than Japanese teachers.

    We conducted a questionnaire survey focusing on the teachers' own perceptions of their training needs. The survey involved 418 teachers in state primary schools across Japan. The teachers were asked to identify the levels of English ability required to meet their needs in the classroom. The factors influencing their responses included : their self-perceptions of their own English proficiency levels ; different views of the objectives of English Language Teaching at primary school ; and variations in the mode of delivering the teaching. In addition the teachers' manuals for Eigo Note have been closely analyzed to identify their linguistic characteristics.
