初年度である2021年度は、古墳出現期における鉄製武器の製作集団を抽出し、その生産と流通の実態を解明する上で必要な基礎的データを収集するため、ヤリや鉄鏃の糸巻きを対象にデジタルマイクロスコープによる観察を実施した。
まず、岡山県および兵庫県を中心に、ヤリや鉄鏃に巻かれている糸の素材、撚りの有無・回転方向、幅を観察・計測し、武器の型式ごと、そして古墳ごとの様子を確認した。その結果、①ヤリなど同一種類の器物での糸巻きの様子からみた生産体制の集約度合い、②ヤリと鏃（または漁具などの生産用具）といった異なる種類の器物を横断して、糸巻きの様子からみた器物生産諸部門の関連性という２つの課題に実証的に迫り得る見通しを得た。とくにヤリは、小型墳墓の単数副葬例に加え、三角縁神獣鏡などが伴う大型前方後円墳の複数副葬例もあるので、階層性・地域性あるいは中心周辺関係という多様な社会関係を貫く比較が可能となった。とりわけ複数副葬の場合、糸巻きに多様性が認められることから、複数回にわたる複雑な入手契機があった可能性が考えられる。
また、木製把の内部構造を詳細に検討するため、岡山県女男岩墳丘墓から出土したヤリや浦間茶臼山古墳から出土した鉄剣のX線CT調査を実施した。さらに、浦間茶臼山古墳の鉄鏃は、巻かれている複数種類の繊維巻きの遺存状態が良好であるため、各型式の鉄鏃と繊維巻きの種類を対応させるため、X線CT調査を通じて生産・流通単位の抽出作業を進めた。
このように、武器の生産から副葬に至る過程をより実証的に復元できる手掛かりを得ている。
そのほか、状態良好なヤリを対象として蛍光X線分析で顔料の有無を確認し、装飾の様子を検討した。さらにSfM-MVSを活用した武器の三次元モデルを構築し、伝統的考古学で用いる手書き実測図では十分表現できない多様な糸の有効な資料提示法の開拓に努めた。
