Symposium: The Birth of S: A Half-Century of Causal Synergism. (Sponsored by EPIDEMIOLOGY)

June of 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Ken Rothman’s paper “Synergy and Antagonism in Cause-Effect Relationships” (AJE Vol 99, No. 6, June 1974). This short, landmark paper identified for the first time in the epidemiologic literature the additive scale null as the benchmark for assessing causal synergism. It went on to propose the novel measure “S” to assess deviations from additive joint effects, and to show that this was applicable to relative effect measures. This seminal publication led to a revolution in multifactorial casual theory in epidemiology, and a proliferation of new ideas for how to understand causal mechanisms through the lens of joint effects patterns. It is therefore fitting to take this opportunity to reflect on a half-century of joint effects, considering how this crucial idea has evolved over this time, and to what extent causal mechanisms have or have not been elucidated through the application of these techniques in epidemiologic research. Most exciting is that Ken Rothman has agreed to attend the meeting and serve as the Discussant of this session, offering a rare opportunity for the original author to reflect back over the 50 years of this idea in epidemiology and to consider its legacy and impact.
