    A change of the number of patent applications is investigated in order to estimate activity of research and development of companies in each prefecture. The number of patent applications in most prefectures tends to decrease through these thirteen years (2000-2012). Most prefectures of North Tohoku, San-in, Shikoku and Kyushu district have smaller number of the patent applications. The Universities located in these prefectures have smaller number of cooperative researches between a university and a company. This result suggests that activity of research and development of not only a company but also the whole area including a university are weak in these regions. From the viewpoint of creation of the local innovation, it is supposed that an innovation power is weak particularly in these regions. It will be thought that some policy measures depending on the local situation are necessary in the future.<br>

    In this study, the grinding mechanism of the crankshaft pin carried out by the CNC crankshaft pin grinder, is theoretically analyzed. By this grinder in the grinding process, the geometrical interference form varies continuously, because the substantial grinding speed at the grinding point changes due to the revolution of the pin. Therefore, the grinding mechanism in the CNC camshaft pin grinder is made clear, from the investigation of the various relation of the speed at the grinding point. Furthermore, the control methods of the constant grinding velocity ratio and of the constant residual stock are proposed in order to regulate the variations of the grinding results. In these methods, the journal rotation angle velocity is controlled to maintain the size of the geometrical chip shape constant, and the high performance pin grinding ability is verified.

    In contour grinding, grinding force varies in a complex way, because the curvature radius of a workpiece varies and the real depth of cut is also influenced by the thermal deformation of a machine structure. Since low stiffness tools are generally used in contour grinding, the fluctuation of a grinding force results in a lower machining accuracy. In this study, therefore, in order to establish the high precision contour grinding method, the reference position correct sensor is developed to compensate the thermal deformation of a machine structure, and the controlled normal force grinding technique is proposed to restrain the fluctuation of a normal grinding force. High performance contour grinding method, with which both constant surface roughness and high dimensional accuracy can be obtained in any curvature radius of a workpiece, is developed by using the controlled normal force grinding method with the reference position correct sensor.

    In order to establish the high precision contour grinding method, the reference position correct sensor is first developed for compensating the thermal deformation of a machine structure, and then the controlled normal force grinding method is developed to control a fluctuation ofa normal grinding force. Main conclusions obtained in this study are as follows : (1) It is made possible to correct the error of wheel depth of cut accurately, with using developed reference position correct sensor. (2) The controlled normal force grinding technique is developed, through the analysis of the feed rate setting conditions correspond to the curvature variation of a workpiece. (3) High performance contour grinding method, with which both constant surface roughness and high dimensional accuracy can be obtained in any curvature radius of a workpiece, is developed by using the controlled normal force grinding method incorporate the reference position correct sensor.

    The partial contacting wear test of spray coated ceramics was carried out by using pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The test results of spray coated ceramics with no treatment were compared with that of Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics. And observation of wear surface was carried out using together some methods of observation in order to analyze the wear surface in initial break-in condition quantitatively.<BR>The main results are in the following : Spray coated ceramics was worn abnormally after partial contacting wear test, but Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics was worn normally, protecting from the damage by partial contacting. Phenomenon of surface break-in condition can be evaluated quantitatively by statistical treatment of wear surface profile.

    Grinding is one of the machining methods for finishing that is performed by using a large number of abrasive grains with irregular shapes and random distribution. While this feature enables accurate and high-quality machining, it complicates analysis of the grinding process. To solve this problem, a great number of computer simulations have been carried out using the Monte Carlo method. Most of them, however, statically calculate geometric interaction between a grain and a workpiece, and have not provided enough achievements for practical applications. In this study, taking this background into account, a simulation program has been developed based on the elastic support model of a grain in which the elasticity of grain support changes according to its location. The program focuses on the generation process of a workpiece surface, and simulates the interaction between grains and a workpiece, which includes the elastic and plastic deformation as well as the removal of workpiece material. Examples of the simulation shown in this study verify the fact that the simulation program facilitates analysis of the microscopic grinding phenomena, and can be used as a practical tool for predicting the grinding results and for optimizing grinding parameters.

    A good part of grinding operations is still dependent on skilled operators. Against such a background, this study takes up cylindrical plunge grinding, and presents a skill-formation model based on the learning process similar to that in which a grinding operator acquires skills through trial and error. The model repeats learning by giving only the total grinding stock and initial infeed rate, changing infeed rate, and evaluating the size and the removal rate in the process end. The simulation result has proved that the model shows a skill-formation process similar to that of an operator and generates desirable infeed processes.

This chapter outlines the development of a simulation program based on the elastic behavior model of a grain. The program focuses on the generation process of a workpiece surface, and simulates the interaction of grains with a workpiece, which includes the elastic and plastic deformation and the removal of workpiece material. The simulation result is visualized using a three-dimensional graphics technique. The chapter illustrates an example, which verifies that the simulation program makes it easy to analyze the microscopic grinding phenomena, and can be used as a practical tool for predicting the grinding results and for optimizing grinding parameters. © 2006 Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.     For an accurate estimation method of grinding force generated in deep cut grinding process with ball-end grinding wheel, the grinding force is fundamentally analyzed in this study. This analysis consists of four parts as mentioned below : (1) Relation between the grinding force generated on the ball-end grinding wheel working surface and observed values obtained by tool dynamometer are theoretically made clear. (2) The grinding force distribution is experimentally investigated by the pin grinding test, and the unique grinding force distribution, which is not elucidated yet, is also made clear for the first time. (3) The relation between wheel interference angle and specific grinding force is analyzed by the results from the pin grinding test. (4) The grinding force increasing rate is experimentally investigated by the thin plate grinding ability test. Furthermore, the precision grinding force estimation method, which is essential to investigate the wheel fractured mechanism in deep cut grinding test, is established and also certified it's effectiveness.

    In this study, the crankshaft pin grinding mechanism, which is carried out with wheel head oscillating type CNC crankshaft pin grinder, is theoretically analyzed. In order to maintain grinding process, the pin rotates and also rocks along wheel working surface, because the wheel head oscillates with journal rotation. Then, it is made clear that cylindrical plunge grinding process progresses in the pin grinding process for the first time. Therefore, grinding speed ratio, which is defined as ratio of substantial pin surface speed to wheel surface speed, is firstly formulated. Secondly, undeformed chip size generated by a grain is estimated with the grinding velocity ratio. Finally, the grinding performance is predicted with experimental equations, which obtained previous study. By this simulation, it is made clear that dimensional accuracy and also surface roughness vary on whole of the pin surface with constant journal rotation grinding method. On the contrary, deviations of both the dimensional accuracy and the surface roughness are reduced with controlled speed ratio grinding method, in which journal rotation speed is adequately controlled.

    In contour grinding process with ball-end grinding wheel, successive cutting point spacing and also wheel peripheral speed change continuously on a working wheel surface. And these parameters will have an influence on grinding mechanism. Then, in order to make grinding mechanism clear, undeformed chip shape is theoretically analyzed in this paper. Fundamental relationships about substantial parameters, which represent the undeformed chip shape, such as chip thickness, chip length, interference angle and cross-sectional chip area, are theoretically analyzed. Then, in order to obtain these parameters, numerical simulation method is established. The undeformed chip shape is symmetrical form to rotational angle of cutting edge, and is extremely longer and also thinner than that in ordinary external cylindrical plunge grinding. Effects of tool and grinding conditions on the undeformed chip shape are investigated, and it made clear that an increase of wheel peripheral surface speed should be reduce cutting force affected on a grain. Furthermore, grinding force distribution on a wheel working surface is predicted considering with the chip thickness and the wheel peripheral speed.

    In this study, a non-contact type touch sensor, which can predict a machining start point in an external cylindrical plunge grinding process, is developed. The detecting mechanism of this sensor is based on the peculiar grinding fluid spouting phenomenon, which appears in a grinding process with a porous grinding wheel. Grinding fluid cools the sensor, which is previously heated by the Joule's heat slightly, and then a quantity of spouting grinding fluid increases with a decrease of a distance between grinding wheel and workpiece. Therefore, a unique touch sensing method is proposed, in which the residual wheel head approach distance can be predicted by the sensor output change in a wheel head approach.

    In contour grinding, grinding force varies in a complex way, because the curvature radius of a workpiece varies and the real depth of cut is also influenced by the thermal deformation of a machine structure. Since low stiffness tools are generally used in contour grinding, the fluctuation of a grinding force results in a lower machining accuracy. In this study, therefore, in order to establish the high precision contour grinding method, the reference position correct sensor is developed to compensate the thermal deformation of a machine structure, and the controlled normal force grinding technique is proposed to restrain the fluctuation of a normal grinding force. High performance contour grinding method, with which both constant surface roughness and high dimensional accuracy can be obtained in any curvature radius of a workpiece, is developed by using the controlled normal force grinding method with the reference position correct sensor.

    In order to establish the high precision contour grinding method, the reference position correct sensor is first developed for compensating the thermal deformation of a machine structure, and then the controlled normal force grinding method is developed to control a fluctuation ofa normal grinding force. Main conclusions obtained in this study are as follows : (1) It is made possible to correct the error of wheel depth of cut accurately, with using developed reference position correct sensor. (2) The controlled normal force grinding technique is developed, through the analysis of the feed rate setting conditions correspond to the curvature variation of a workpiece.     The partial contacting wear test of spray coated ceramics was carried out by using pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The test results of spray coated ceramics with no treatment were compared with that of Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics. And observation of wear surface was carried out using together some methods of observation in order to analyze the wear surface in initial break-in condition quantitatively.<BR>The main results are in the following : Spray coated ceramics was worn abnormally after partial contacting wear test, but Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics was worn normally, protecting from the damage by partial contacting. Phenomenon of surface break-in condition can be evaluated quantitatively by statistical treatment of wear surface profile.

    In order to describe quantitatively the grinding process of partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) with metal bonded diamond wheel, the analytical method established for metal grinding is applied to the grinding process of fine ceramics, and the theoretical values are compared to the experimental values. It is made clear that the plunge grinding process of PSZ with metal bonded diamond wheel can be represented by five independent characteristic parameters such as the size generation acceleration, the wheel wear rate, the grinding system stiffness, the contact stiffness and the cutting stiffness. By the characteristic parameters, variations of the grinding force, the stock removal, the residual stock through a grinding cycle and the grinding cycle time can be predicted. © 1989, The Japan Society for Precision Engineering.     The circular cutting with a single point diamond cutting edge, in which the depth of cut is very small and takes maximum at some point, is carried out for making clear a cutting process of partially stabilized zirconia under conditions similar to practical grinding, investigating sliding phenomenon of a diamond cutting edge, normal cutting force, groove profile, stock removal and so on. Main conclusions obtained in this study are as follows : 11) There are three different regions with depth of cut ; elastic, plastic and cutting region. (2) There are critical depths and critical normal forces at the beginning point of plastic deformation and cutting. (3) In the transitional cutting process, there are following three types of interference with maximum depth of cut ; (i) elastic region through the contact length, (ii) elastic-plastic-elastic, (iii) elastic-plastic-cutting-plastic-elastic.     Cylindrical plunge grinding process and surface generation process of Sialon are experimentally investigated with bronze bond diamond wheel, analyzing grinding force, surface roughness, wheel wear, ground surface and so on. Main conclusions obtained in this study are as follows: (1) In a cylindrical plunge grinding process of Sialon with bronze bond diamond wheel, there are three distinct grinding processes such as spark-in, steady and spark-out. (2) Ground surface is formed by plastic deformation as well as brittle fracture in grinding Sialon. (3) Diamond grain primarily wears in attrition. (4) Grinding force increases with an increase of setting depth of cut, while surface roughness is hardly influenced by setting depth of cut. © 1988, The Japan Society for Precision Engineering.     In this study, we proposed the dry grinding of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) using the dry ice jet blowing on a diamond grinding wheel surface in the grinding process. As a result, it was experimentally clarified that the dry ice jet controls the wheel loading due to grinding of CFRP to lead the extent of wheel life and the increase of ground surface quality rather than the normal dry grinding. Furthermore, it was confirmed that some carbon fibers on the ground surface were finely crushed in wet grinding.

    In the face grinding proses of cemented carbide with diamond plating grinding wheel, which is superior in cooling characteristics, it is obtained that information to design of the new type grinding wheel to deep cut grinding experimentally, with the analysis of grinding state, by measuring of such as grinding force, grinding force distribution which has pressure dimension, observation of grinding wheel surface, EPMA analysis of adhesive material on the grinding surface of the wheel,surface roughness and so on.
    As a result, when feed rate is constant, and it added setting depth of the cut, a steady state did not develop, and, the adhesive material due to grinding chip distribution at bottom of grinding wheel near land corner R, it became clear that peak value reduced and also width of peak became broad. In the case of setting depth is constant and it added feed rate, grinding results are similar. And two prototypes of grinding wheels for deep depth of cut grinding are produced.

    We analyzed cooperative research contract information of 19 universities of the financial years 2004-2013 or 2009-2013, in order to clarify the situation of University-Industry research collaborations and the geographical distribution of the partners. We obtained following results. The cooperative researches with large enterprises in Kanto area are increasing at most universities. On the other hand, the cooperative researches of a university with a small and medium-sized enterprise which is located in the prefecture where the university is located have a tendency not to increase at most universities. This tendency is thought a big problem for promoting of the local innovations.

    We focused various activities that the regional financial institutes were making for their customer companies influenced by Regional Relationship Banking Policy in Japan. Especially we focused the networking between the financial institutes and the research institutes like Universities. We analyzed the features of the networks quantitatively and the effects on the activities. As the result of the verification, this research could show following facts. Around half of the financial institutes and the research institutes in same Prefectural area joined the network influenced by the Regional Relationship Banking Policy. The complicated network, plural financial institutes and the research institutes were connected mutually, had not been made yet. The network with the research institutes could influence the banker’s awareness and decision of financing.

    In this study, the cavitation aided machining is proposed as a precision micro patterning method based on the new concept of a positive use of cavitation in a suction flow for machining phenomenon. There have been problems on cavitation that causes erosion, vibration and noise of fluid machinery since its discovery. However, its advantages on cleaning or peening and so on were recently reported.
    The cavitation aided machining makes loose micro abrasive grains, which are mixed in machining fluid of water, to interfere in the workpiece surface with impact of cavitation and flow of machining fluid restricted partially by the restrictor setting above a machining point on workpiece surface. The machining phenomenon continuously occurs along the workpiece surface by sliding a restrictor along the flowing direction parallel to the workpiece surface. In the micro patterning process, the polished glass surface except for the required machining region is masked by polyester film, and it is machined by the cavitation aided machining. The required micro profile on glass surface is obtained after releasing masking film.
    The micro profile generation mechanism and characteristics of glass by the proposed micro patterning method has been investigated in this study. The form accuracy of generated micro patterns become higher with decreasing the thickness of masking film or the machining width determined by the mask. Several micro patterns on glass surface, for example the micro terraced groove, the micro terraced dimple and so on, depend on mask patterns have been obtained, and there is a possibility of cavitation aided machining applying to the micro fabrication of hard and brittle materials.

    The purpose of this research is to obtain fundamental information for making clear the generation mechanism of ultraprecision machined surface of anisotropic super-elastic alloy with a diamond tool. Especially, in the case of ultraprecision cutting of anisotropic super-elastic alloy, it is difficult to finish the surface with high geometrical accuracy. Then some factors generating geometrical accuracy in ultraprecision cutting of Al-Mg alloy are investigated by analyzing finished surface profile and cutting heat in ultraprecision cutting process. Main conclusions obtained in this research are as follows : (1) Workpiece surface is finished in a concave profile with convex center in ultraprecision cutting. (2) Such profile of finished surface is generated by the thermal expansion of diamond tool and workpiece with cutting heat or spring back of cutting edge. (3) The maximum temperature rise at cutting point runs to 130℃. (4) The profile of finished surface is as same as that simulated with temperature rise and coefficient of thermal expansion of cutting tool.

    The purpose of this research is to obtain fundamental information for making clear the generation mechanism of ultraprecision machined surface of functional materials with mono-crystallin diamond tool. Especially, the function of machined material is affected by the surface finish. Then some factors generating surface finish in ultraprecision cutting of Al-Mg alloy are investigated by analyzing finished surface profile and observing orientation of each crystal grain with ECP method. Main conclusions obtained in this research are as follows : (1) In the case of smaller feed rate, steps are generated at the grain boundary on a finished surface of Al-Mg alloy by ultraprecision cutting and that is one of factors which affect on an increase of surface finish. (2) Steps are generated by the difference of elastic recovery of each crystal grain and are affected by orientation of crystal grains side by side. And the revel of crystal grain becomes higher with approaching its direction to (124) on a stereo triangle. (3) The step on grain boundary is affected by burnishing with a frank and decreases with a decrease of relief angle. (4) The specific cutting force ratio and compressive residual stress increase with an increase of burnishing effect.
