    Research into the evaluation and measurement of writing ability in academic Japanese as required of international students at the bachelor's level is a pressing issue. This report outlines evaluations conducted by university instructors on the written works of nonnative speakers of Japanese. In addition, based on the results of these evaluations, observations are presented concerning the factors that affect the difficulty of understanding opinion pieces written by foreign students whose mother tongue is not Japanese. As a result, one aspect of this difficulty will be clarified in detail. It is concluded that the overall evaluations of opinion pieces are determined by whether or not the thesis statement and its supporting evidence are structured properly or not.

    I discussed the mechanism of evaluative meaning in three forms: wh-questions, "toka," and "sonna N." Adopting Sadanobu's (2014) notion of "Kimochi ketsuboushou," I argued that evaluative meaning arises to remedy the deviance (combinatorial insufficiency) that occurs when each form abandons the fulfillment of its original function.

    We defined "evaluative meaning" as a grammatical form expressing emotional or evaluative meanings such as irritation, anger, blame, surprise, and as such. Apart from its original meaning, and four speakers conducted analyses on various forms. Four speakers presented their analyses of various forms of evaluative meaning. The workshop was intended as an opportunity to draw attention to the study of evaluative meaning.

    The study was designed to test the hypothesis that there may be dialectal differences in field-directed usage of Japanese. The first half of the study was conducted intensively in various locations, but had to be interrupted due to the corona disaster. However, the first half of the experiment yielded many results. First, it is still not clear whether the choice of demonstratives depends on the dialect. On the other hand, the results suggest that the speaker's affective attitude toward the target, such as liking or dislike, and the concept of joint attention may be influential.
    In the latter half of the period, we shifted the issue to theoretical considerations. Hirata(2020) provides a number of findings from the recording of natural conversations, but it remains to be seen how these results will differ from our experimental results.

    This research investigated how the use of Japanese demonstratives varies, depending on the social and the geographic factors. According to the experiments we had in Nagasaki university and Okayama university in 2014 and 2015, we discovered that their dialects affect to some extent the use of "So"-series demonstratives especially. We also studied the use of "a"-series demonstratives used in memory use. Our investigations strongly suggest that the "direct experience" is not needed as strongly as the previous studies have claimed. Instead, some kind of emotional factors of a speaker affect the selection of demonstratives in such dialects mentioned above.

    Little attention has been paid to the question of dialect differences in the deictic use of Japanese demonstratives. Uncovering this question leads us to a better understanding of demonstratives in our language system. In 2012, we examined potential differences in the use of demonstratives between speakers in the Kansai and Chugoku areas of Japan. While both of these regions are located in the Western part of Japan, the dialect in each is quite different. Our data suggests that there is a difference in demonstrative use between the two regions, particularly in terms of how the space around the hearer is referred. Specifically, speakers in the Kansai region tend to use sono-NP, which supports the findings in existing studies. However, speakers from the Chugoku region use ano-NP to refer to the same area.
