Abstract

We investigated the electronic structures of mono- and few-layered Ru nanosheets (N layers (L) with N = 1, ~6, and ~9) on Si substrate by ultra-violet and x-ray photoemission spectroscopies. The spectral density of states (DOS) near E_F of ~6 L and 1 L is suppressed as it approaches E_F in contrast to that of ~9 L, which is consistent with the Ru 3 d core-level shift indicating the reduction of the metallic conductivity. A power law g(ε) ∝ |ε − ε_F|^α well reproduces the observed spectral DOS of ~6 L and 1 L. The evolution of the power factor α suggests that the transition from the metallic state of ~9 L to the 2-dimensional insulating state with the soft Coulomb gap of 1 L through the disordered 3-dimensional metallic state of ~6 L.

We have performed a photoemission study of the Mott–Hubbard system Nd1−xSrxVO3 (x = 0.20 and 0.30) to investigate the electronic structure in the vicinity of the metal–insulator transition. By using bulk sensitive hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we have observed a large coherent spectral weight near the Fermi level compared to those observed with surface-sensitive low photons. In particular, a pseudogap with an energy of ~0.2 eV has been observed near the Fermi level, which is consistent with a prediction with a dynamical cluster approximation calculation. In order to understand the characteristic features in the Mott–Hubbard-type metal–insulator transition, particularly the pseudogap opening at x = 0.2 and 0.3, a phenomenological model of the self-energy has been proposed.

We have studied the multi-band electronic structure of BaNi₂(As₁₋<italic>_x</italic>P<italic>_x</italic>)₂(<italic>x</italic>= 0.00 and 0.092) in which the P substitution suppresses unusual Ni–Ni zigzag bond order and induces strong coupling superconductivity. At <italic>x</italic>= 0.092, all the Fermi surfaces predicted by the ab-initio band calculations are successfully identified including the small electron pocket around the Z point. Interestingly, whereas the Ni 3<italic>d</italic><italic>xy</italic>and <italic>x</italic>²− <italic>y</italic>²bands crossing <italic>E</italic>_Fagree with the band calculations, the Ni 3<italic>d</italic><italic>y</italic><inline-formula id="if1"><italic>z</italic></inline-formula>/<inline-formula id="if2"><italic>z</italic></inline-formula><italic>x</italic>bands around 1 eV below the Fermi level (<italic>E</italic>_F) are moderately renormalized similar to those in the Fe-based superconductors. The orbital-dependent band renormalization in BaNi₂(As₁₋<italic>_x</italic>P<italic>_x</italic>)₂indicates that the less correlated <italic>xy</italic>and <italic>x</italic>²− <italic>y</italic>²bands play important roles in the strong coupling superconductivity. Across the Ni–Ni bond order at <italic>x</italic>= 0.00, the less correlated Ni 3<italic>d</italic><italic>xy</italic>and <italic>x</italic>²− <italic>y</italic>²bands near <italic>E</italic>_Fare selectively reconstructed across the Ni–Ni bond order. The band reconstruction is consistent with the orbital-selective Peierls instability proposed by Streltsov and Khomskii [<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.89.161112" xlink:type="simple">Phys. Rev. B <bold>89</bold>, 161112(R) (2014)</ext-link>], in which the itinerant orbital sector governs the structural instability and fluctuations.

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small number of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow window of high-doped Ce concentration after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4 (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a protect annealing method showed a high critical temperature of around 27 K for small Ce content down to 0.05. Here, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an antiferromagnetic pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of antiferromagnetic correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present results fundamentally challenge the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime.

We have studied the electronic structure of Li1+x[Mn0.5Ni0.5]1−xO2 (x = 0.00 and 0.05), one of the promising cathode materials for Li ion battery, by means of x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy. The results show that the valences of Mn and Ni are basically 4+ and 2+, respectively. However, the Mn3+ component in the x = 0.00 sample gradually increases with the bulk sensitivity of the experiment, indicating that the Jahn-Teller active Mn3+ ions are introduced in the bulk due to the site exchange between Li and Ni. The Mn3+ component gets negligibly small in the x = 0.05 sample, which indicates that the excess Li suppresses the site exchange and removes the Jahn-Teller active Mn3+.

Structural phase separation in A x Fe2-ySe2 system has been studied by different experimental techniques, however, it should be important to know how the electronic uniformity is influenced, on which length scale the electronic phases coexist, and what is their spatial distribution. Here, we have used novel scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) to study the electronic phase separation in K x Fe2-ySe2, providing a direct measurement of the topological spatial distribution of the different electronic phases. The SPEM results reveal a peculiar interconnected conducting filamentary phase that is embedded in the insulating texture. We have investigated the electronic structure of superconducting (SC) and nonsuperconducting (non-SC) KxFe2-ySe2 using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The spectral shape of the Fe 2p XPS is found to depend on the amount of Fe vacancies. The Fe 2p3/2 peak of the SC and non-SC Fe-rich samples is accompanied by a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side, which can be attributed to the metallic phase embedded in the Fe2+ insulating phase. The absence of the shoulder structure in the non-SC Fe-poor sample allows us to analyze the Fe 2p spectra using a FeSe4 cluster model. The Fe 3d-Se 4p charge-transfer energy of the Fe2+ insulating phase is found to be ∼2.3 eV which is smaller than the Fe 3d-Fe 3d Coulomb interaction of ∼3.5 eV. This indicates that the Fe2+ insulating state is the charge-transfer type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. We also find a substantial change in the valence-band XPS as a function of Fe content and temperature. The metallic state at the Fermi level is seen in the SC and non-SC Fe-rich samples and tends to be enhanced with cooling in the SC sample. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We have studied spin--charge--orbital orderings in a Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺mixed valence state on a hollandite-type lattice using unrestricted Hartree--Fock calculation on a multi-band Mn 3d--O 2p lattice model. The calculations show that all the Mn³⁺--Mn⁴⁺, Mn³⁺--Mn³⁺, and Mn⁴⁺--Mn⁴⁺superexchange interactions are ferromagnetic and play important roles to stabilize the charge and orbital ordering patterns. The most stable charge and orbital ordering pattern is consistent with the 1\times 1\times 1 orthorhombic or monoclinic structure of K<inf>1.6</inf>Mn<inf>8</inf>O<inf>16</inf>.

When periodicity of crystal is disturbed by atomic disorder, its electronic state tends to be inhomogeneous and band dispersion is expected to be obscured. In case of Fe-based superconductors, disorder of chalcogen/pnictogen height is known to cause disorder of Fe 3d level splitting. Here, we report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on FeSe<inf>1-x</inf>Te<inf>x</inf>with the chalcogen height disorder, showing that the disorder affects the Fe 3d band dispersions in an orbital-selective way instead of simple obscuring effect. The reverse of the Fe 3d level splitting due to the chalcogen height difference causes the splitting of the hole band with Fe 3d_{x^{2}-y^{2 } } character around the \Gamma point.

We report a photoemission spectroscopy study on IrTe2 which exhibits an interesting lattice distortion below 270 K. Ir 4f core-level photoemission spectrum is broadened in going from 300K to 40K. This result indicates the charge moderation of Ir 5d electrons. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) result at 300K shows multi-band Fermi surfaces with six-fold symmetry which are basically consistent with band structure calculations. At the distorted phase, the inner Fermi surfaces become quasi one-dimensional Fermi surface due to the lattice distortion.

本研究では電子相関と乱れが共存する系において１粒子励起スペクトルの直接観測を行い、電子相関と乱れが引き起こす特徴的な電子状態を明らかにすることを目的としている。研究計画に基づき、本年度は特に次の研究成果を得た。
<BR>
（１）金属絶縁体転移を示すRu酸化物について角度分解光電子分光（ARPES）、硬Ｘ線光電子分光（HAXPES）を行い、詳細な電子構造解析を行った。特にCa3Ru2O7については不純物置換に伴うスペクトル形状の変化を明らかにした。また、ホッピング伝導を示す類似物質Ca2-xSrxRuO4についてもARPESとHAXPESを行い、バルク絶縁体上に表面金属状態が実現していることを明らかにした。この成果は、現在国際誌への投稿準備中である。
（２）Ruナノシートの電子状態の基板依存性を行った。Ruナノシートの電気伝導性は基板により変化する可能性が指摘されている。そこで低エネルギー励起光、及び硬Ｘ線の全反射条件を用いてRuナノシート基板依存性を調べた。その結果、Si基板において観測されたソフトギャップ構造が基板に依存して変化することが明らかになった。また、逆光電子分光を用いてSi基板上のRuナノシートの非占有側の電子状態観測を行った。非占有側の電子状態においてもソフトギャップ構造が観測された。この成果は、現在国際誌に投稿している。
（３）励起子絶縁体Ta2NiSe5についてARPESを行い、フェルミ準位近傍の温度依存性を調べた。また、不純物により異なる電気伝導性を示すTa2NiSe5を比較した。特に、光電子分光の共鳴過程を用いることでフェルミ準位近傍の励起子ギャップの軌道成分を調べ、電子状態解析を行った。

We have performed photoemission studies of transition metal vanadium and ruthenium oxides with strongly correlated t2g electrons in order to clarify the electronic structure in the vicinity of Mott transition with orbital order. In vanadium oxides Na1-xSrxVO3, we have observed pseudogap near the Mott transition. Using phenomenological self-energy, we have successfully reproduced the shape of spectra with pseudogap. In Ca2RuO4 which shows insulator-to-metal transition with inducing electric field, we have performed photoemission spectroscopy measurement under electric field. We have observed the decrease of the Mott gap with increasing current. The observed gap value is quantitatively consistent with the value estimated from the current-voltage characteristic of the sample.

本研究は三角格子・正方格子を持つ遷移金属カルコゲナイド化合物の電子状態を光電子分光などの様々な手法を用いて軌道状態と超伝導の関連を調べることが目的である。
平成27年度は三角格子を持つ遷移金属カルコゲナイドIrTe2の低温相において、表面に由来する一次元的な電子状態を発見した。IrTe2の低温相ではIr及びTeの電荷軌道整列に伴い、IrTe2面から傾いた擬二次元的な電子状態が理論的には予測されていた。低温相のバルク成分は理論的な予言と一致しており、新たに発見した1次元的な表面状態は、この擬２次元面と表面が交錯することによって形成されていると考えられる。さらに超伝導を示すIr1-xPtxTe2については世界最高分解能を有するレーザー角度分解光電子分光装置を用いてTc=3.1Kの超伝導ギャップの直接観測に成功した。超伝導ギャップは二枚のフェルミ面が近づくところで顕著な異方性を示しており、これらはIrないしTeの強いスピン・軌道相互作用に由来する特殊な超伝導状態である可能性を示唆している。
