今年度は国内で実見での作品調査を行う予定であったが、新型コロナ感染症の流行のため活動が制限された。そのためオンライン公開がされている資料や文献調査を中心とする研究に切り替えるとともに、相撲以外の江戸の庶民信仰についても広く先行研究の調査を行った。相撲に関する研究でとりわけ注目したのが力士の手形に関するものである。現代において力士の手形は魔除けの意味を持つ縁起物としてもてはやされるが、その由来や成立は判然としていない。文政期（1818-1830）には朱の手形を押す力士の浮世絵が描かれていることからこの頃までには力士の手形を配る風習が生まれていたことがうかがえる。調査した文献・資料にも明和期（1764-1772）以降力士の手形が付せられているるものが散見されるが、共通するのはいずれも巨人力士と呼ばれる長身の力士たちであり、当初はその並外れた大きさを記録するために手形を押したと考えられる。江戸時代の文献にも歴代の巨人力士に関する記述が見られることから、相撲における巨人は重要なテーマであった一方で、いつから手形が魔除けの意味を帯びはじめたのかについては明確な結論を得ず、継続した調査が必要である。庶民信仰に関する作品では、町人文化の隆盛と浮世絵の板行数の拡大に伴い、鑑賞だけではない実用のための作品や、双六・玩具絵など多様な作例が収集できた。流行病など疾病に関する作例には、病除けや回復に向けての神仏信仰を示す作品が含まれる。一方で神道・仏教・儒教等が生活に根ざしてゆく過程で混淆とともに通俗化が進み、神仏に対する畏れにとどまらない親しみのようなものも作品には認められ、極めて多様な展開がうかがえた。このような作例が生み出された背景や当時の信仰の形について、文献調査も並行して行い、いくつかの作例をピックアップした上で研究期間中に報告書の作成を目指したい。

It is the final year of Confucian art research. For that reason, we focused on the Confucius Festival and made an international conference. The International Conference was held on January 26, 2018 with the International Conference Room of the University of Tsukuba as the venue. Presentation was made by Mr. Suu Masaru (Taiwan Central Research Institute), Chen Yostang (Professor of Taiwan University), James McMullen (Emeritus Professor of Oxford University), Kanoshi Kinoshi (Art historian). Following the announcement, research representatives and shareholders have announced their research results so far. The report on the outcome of the meeting was published as "" Banquet - Concept of Confucius in East Asia "Report Papers" (March 31, 2018). As a result, I was able to get to the start line for cross-cutting research foundation of Confucian art research in East Asia.
