We measure elasticity of substitution between foreign and domestic
commodities by two-point calibration such that the Armington aggregator can
replicate the two temporally distant observations of market shares and prices.
Along with the sectoral multifactor CES elasticities which we estimate by
regression using a set of disaggregated linked input--output observations, we
integrate domestic production of two countries, namely, Japan and the Republic
of Korea, with bilateral trade models and construct a bilateral general
equilibrium model. Finally, we make an assessment of a tariff elimination
scheme between the two countries.

  • Corporate financial structure of South Korea after Asian financial crisis: the chaebol experience Reviewed

    Jiyoung Kim

    Language:English Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:SpringerOpen

The chaebol, a South Korean form of business conglomerate, has been a key factor in the country’s economic growth. In this study, the chaebol sector is added to the asset–liability matrix derived from a flow-of-funds analysis in order to explain the role of the chaebol in the Korean financial system. We find that the power-of-dispersion indices in the asset-oriented system differ between the chaebol and other private corporations. Between 1987 and 2002, the former has increased while the latter has declined. In the case of the chaebol, excess liabilities were reduced, while investments in financial assets were increased. This tendency led to an increase in the power-of-dispersion index in this asset-oriented system. Our previous research found a decrease in this index for the private sector in Korea. However, the index increased for chaebol when the private sector is divided into the chaebol and small-/medium-sized corporations in this paper. These results point to a greater concentration of economic power in the chaebol in the Korean financial market.

Sector-specific multifactor CES elasticities of substitution and the corresponding productivity growth are jointly measured by regressing the growth of per-factor cost shares against the growth of factor prices. We use linked input-output tables for Japan and the Republic of Korea as the data source for factor price and cost shares in two temporally distant states. We then construct a multisectoral general equilibrium model using the system of estimated CES unit cost functions and evaluate the economy-wide propagation of an exogenous productivity stimulus in terms of welfare. Further, we examine the differences between models based on a priori elasticities such as Leontief and Cobb-Douglas.

  • Bang Jung-Hwan and the Translation of "The Prince and the Swallow"

    KIM JiYoung

    HIKAKU BUNGAKU Journal of Comparative Literature 54 109 - 122 2011

     More details

    Language:Japanese Publisher:Japan Comparative Literature Association

This paper investigates four works by Bang Jung-Hwan: "The Prince and the Swallow," "The Little Musician," "The Deaf Ducks," and "The Shipwreck." These works were early works of the 1920s, coinciding with Bang Jung-Hwan's period of overseas studies in Japan. In doing so, this paper aims to shed light on the originality of Bang Jung-Hwan.

Considering Bang Jung-Hwan's first translation, "The Prince and the Swallow," this paper re-introduces the general principles of "sentiment," and "naiveté" found in his works. In previous studies, the characteristics of Bang Jung-Hwan and Saitô Sajirô's translations have been considered. Through a strict comparative analysis of Bang's retranslation with the drafted translation of Saitô Sajirô and the original "The Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde, this paper clarifies the differences between the two translations, and attempts to uncover the originality of each.

This paper suggests that within the Bang Jung-Hwan translation there is a tendency towards plot development through the speech of the characters and detailed and dynamic descriptions. This paper also demonstrates that he made adaptations in order to communicate more intensely sadness and other feelings in various scenes.

Bang Jung-Hwan has been referred to as the "father of Korea's children's literature," and researchers have often discussed exclusively his religious ideas and the children's literature movement he inaugurated in Korea, often without conducting close analyses of his texts. This paper claims that his works should also be discussed in terms of his narrative devices and idiosyncratic expressions.

  • Writing of America:

    KIM Jiyoung

    HIKAKU BUNGAKU Journal of Comparative Literature 51 7 - 20 2009

     More details

    Language:Japanese Publisher:Japan Comparative Literature Association

This paper focuses on Japanese representations of America in the works of Sawako Ariyoshi (1931-1984) in contrast to those of her contemporaries. In the postwar period, it was common for Japanese writers to write about America through the lens of the Occupation. Ariyoshi's novel, Kiyū no shi, however, appears to diverge from this trend. Later published as the drama, Furu amerika ni sode wa nurasaji (1970), Kiyū no shi first appeared in Bessatsu Bungeishunjū in 1961. This novel recounts the life of the legendary yūjo by the name of Kiyū, who is known to have committed suicide in protest against being sold to an American merchant during the late Edo period. By suggesting that the Kiyū legend was concocted by Jōito, anti-alienists, Ariyoshi dramatically rewrites the existing texts on Kiyū. A comparative investigation of variants of the Kiyū stories, together with Ariyoshi's essay "As a Herstorian" (1978), sends a critical message about what this rewriting of the old tale means: for Ariyoshi, narratives of national identity cannot be separated from their investment in, and appropriations of, representations of women. In situating this text in the context of postwar discourses on America, I argue that it forces us to rethink how narratives of occupation tell the story of Japanese women as the story of the nation in subordination to foreign occupiers. Juxtaposing Kiyū-no-shi against other contemporary writings of America, this paper rereads this novel as a critical response not only to preceding texts and interpretations of Kiyū but also to contemporary representations of women under Occupation.
