Effect of silicon on the growth and phosphorus uptake of rice

A pot experiment was conducted to measure the effect of silicon on phosphorus uptake and on the growth of rice at different P levels. Rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Akebono) was cultured in Kimura B nutrient solution without and with silicon (1.66 m M Si) and with three phosphorus levels (0.014 m M P, low; 0.21 m M, medium; and 0.70 m M, high). Shoot dry weight with Si (+Si) in solution increased with increasing P level, while shoot weight without Si (-Si) was maximum at 0.21 m M P, suggesting that +Si raised the optimum P level for rice. +Si increased shoot weight more when P was low or high than when P was medium. The concentration and amount of inorganic P in shoots increased with increasing P level. +Si did not significantly decrease P uptake by rice at 0.014 m M P, however, uptake at 0.21 and 0.70 m M P was 27 and 30 percent less than uptake with -Si, respectively. In -Si with 0.21 and 0.70 m M P, inorganic P in shoots was more than double the concentration in shoots grown in +Si solutions. The Si concentration in shoots decreased slightly with increasing P level, although Si uptake was not significantly affected by P. +Si decreased the uptake of Fe and Mn by an average of 20 and 50 percent, respectively, thus P/Mn and P/Fe ratios increased in the shoot when P was low. From the results above, the beneficial effect of Si on the growth of rice was clearly shown when P was low or high. This effect may have resulted from decreased Mn and Fe uptake, and thus increased P availability within P deficient plants, or from reduced P uptake when P was high. © 1990 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

It is estimated that nearly 20 kg of SiO2is removed from the soil by rice plants for producing 100 kg brown rice (Takahashi 1987). Although there is a large amount of silicon in soil, little is available to the rice plant. To supply a sufficient amount of silicon to the rice plant for healthy growth, therefore, it is nccessary to supply various silicon materials to the soil. Rice plants (Oryza sativa L. cv. Akebono) were cultured in Kimura B solution. The effect of silicon on plant growth and the characteristics of the uptake and distribution of silicon at different growth stages were studied from both aspects: The addition and removal of silicon during the vegetative, reproductive and ripening stages. When silicon was removed during the reproductive stage, the dry weights of straw (stem+leaf blade) and grain decreased by 20 and 50% respectively, compared with those of the plants cultured in the solution with silicon throughout the growth period. Conversely, when silicon was added during the reproductive stage, the dry weights of straw and grain increased by 243 and 30%, respectively, over those of the plants cultured in a solution devoid of silicon throughout the growth period. The effect of silicon on the dry weights of straw and grain was small when silicon was either added or removed during the vegetative and ripening stages. The percentage of filled spikelets remarkably increased or decreased when silicon was added or removed during the reproductive stage. The 1, 000-grain weight was hardly influenced by the addition or removal of silicon regardless of the growth stage. About 66% of silicon in the whole plant and 70 to 75% of silicon in the leaf blades were absorbed during the reproductive stage. About 75% of silicon in the panicle was absorbed during the ripening stage although no beneficial effect was detected in this experiment. Forty to 50% of the silicon absorbed during the vegetative and reproductive stages was present in the leaf blades, whereas only 20 to 30% of silicon absorbed during the ripening stage was present in the leaf blades. Based on these results, it is concluded that the supply of silicon during the reproductive stage is most important for plant growth. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The Effect of silicic acid on the phosphorus uptake by rice plants (Oryza sativa L. cv. Akebono) grown in a culture solution was studied by several experiments. In long-term experiments, both the content and the uptake of phosphorus were decreased by the addition of silicic acid, and the effect was more pronounced at the vegetative stage than at the reproductive stage. Under the different phosphorus supply levels ranging from deficient to excess (from 0.1 to 50 ppm as P2O5), we found that, when the phosphorus level in the medium was low, the retardation effect of silicic acid on the phosphorus uptake was hardly observed, but with the rise of the phosphorus level in the medium, the effect became severe, especially at excess level. The rice plants which received silicic acid in advance (pretreatment) absorbed less phosphorus compared with those which were not pretreated with silicic acid, suggesting that the phosphorus uptake was also influenced by the silicon already present in the rice plants. There was no significant difference in the organic-P content between the —Si plants and + Si plants, but the inorganic-P content in the —Si plants was higher than that in the + Si plants. This fact suggests that the excess phosphorus absorbed by the —Si plants was almost completely in the inorganic-P form. In the inorganic-P form, the content of cations such as Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, was also higher in the —Si plants than in the +Si plants, suggesting that these excess cations probably combine with the excess phosphorus in the —Si plants. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
