Preparation of bi-axially aligned YBa2Cu3O7-delta film on CeO2-buffered MgO by chemical solution deposition

We have succeeded in preparing in-plane aligned YBa(2)Cu(3)Q(7-delta) (Y123) film by chemical solution deposition (CSD) processing on CeO2 (100)-buffered MgO (100) substrates. The CeO2 buffer film was deposited on MgO (100) single crystalline substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). For CSD coating, a homogeneous coating solution having a molar ratio of Y:Ba:Cu = 1:2:3, was prepared by dissolving metal naphthenates in toluene. This solution was spin-coated both on the YSZ (100) and on the CeO2-buffered MgO (100) single crystalline substrates. The precursor films were calcined at 425 degrees C and fired at various temperatures under low oxygen partial pressure (pO(2)). All Y123 films showed strong (00n) peaks, which correspond to c-axis orientation perpendicular to the substrates and their a/b-axes were in-plane aligned. We confirmed that CeO2 buffer is usable for CSD processing. While the Y123 films on the YSZ reacted with the substrate forming BaZrO3 phase and did not show sufficient superconducting properties. The T-c,T-zero value of the Y123 film prepared on CeO2-buffered MgO substrate was 91.5 K and J(c) was 1.2 X 10(5) A/cm(2) at 77 K, 0 T. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films with high critical current density (J(c)) were fabricated on nickel tapes buffered with hi-axially textured NiO prepared by surface-oxidation epitaxy (SOE). The effects of oxide cap layers, such as YSZ, CeO2 and MgO, on the SOE-grown NiO were investigated to improve the superconducting properties of the YBCO films on NiO. By inserting a thin MgO cap layer between NiO layer and YBCO film, a J(c) of 3 X 10(5) A/cm(2) (77 K, 0 T) was achieved. This result indicates the potentiality of the SOE method. In this paper, the application of the NiO/Ni substrate to non-vacuum processings, such as metal-organic deposition (MOD) and liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) will be also introduced. YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films with high critical current density (J(c)) were successfully fabricated on nickel tapes buffered with epitaxial NiO. NiO was prepared on the textured nickel tape by the surface-oxidation epitaxy (SOE) method. We have reported so far a critical temperature (T-c) of 87 K and J(c) = 4-6 X 10(4) A/cm(2) (77 K, 0 T) for the YBCO films on NiO/Ni tapes. To enhance the superconducting properties of the YBCO films an the SOE-grown NiO, depositions of thin oxide cap layers such as YSZ, CeO2, and MgO on NiO were investigated. These oxide cap layers were epitaxially grown on NiO and provided the template for the epitaxial growth of YBCO films. Substantially improved data of T-c = 88 K and J(c)= 3 x 10(5) A/cm(2) (77 K, 0 T) and 1 x 10(4) A/cm(2) (77 K, H\\c, 4 T) were obtained for YBCO film on NiO, by using a MgO cap layer with a thickness of 50 nm. The method described in this paper is a simple way to produce long YBCO tape conductors with high-J(c) values. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Homogeneous in-plane aligned YBa2Cu3O7-y (YBCO) films on long metallic substrates are required for power applications. In order to establish in-plane aligned YBCO films, me have been studying Ag {100}<001> textured tapes buffered with a (001)-oriented CeO2 layer. The YBCO and CeO2 films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The CeO2 deposition rate was 900 Angstrom/min. The CeO2 films on Ag {100}<001> textured substrates were (100)-oriented and highly in-plane aligned. The YBCO films deposited by PLD on CeO2 buffered Ag substrates also have c-asis oriented and good in-plane alignment. T-c and J(c) values of the YBCO films were 81 K and 1x10(4) A/cm(2) at 77 K respectively.

Strongly in-plane aligned, c-axis oriented YBCO films were successfully grown on polycrystalline nickel tapes buffered with (100)-oriented NiO layers. The in-plane and out-of-plane alignments of the NiO layer were achieved by a surface-oxidation epitaxy (SOE) technique using a {100}<001> cube-textured nickel tape. The in-plane textures of NiO layers fabricated so far with the full width half maximum (FWHM) values of 11-13 degrees ale sufficient for the epitaxial growth of high-J(c) YBCO films. Pulsed laser deposited YBCO layers on the NiO/Ni tapes were not only c-axis oriented with respect to the tape surface, but also strongly in-plane aligned. The YBCO films on NiO/Ni tapes have a zero resistance T-c=87K and J(c)=10(4)-10(5)A/cm(2) at 77K.

In this paper, we present the results of experiments and computer simulations to make clear the quench propagation properties in Bi-2223/Ag superconducting multifilament tape. We developed a computer code based on the two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM). Computed voltage and temperature traces during a quench agree well with the experimentally recorded voltage and temperature traces. Good agreement validates the computer code, making a useful tool in developing protection strategies for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils. Therefore, we simulate the quench process in a single pancake coil wound with Bi-2223/Ag superconducting multifilament tape with background magnetic filed up to 10 T at 20 K using the developed computer code. The quench propagation properties and stability in HTS coils are discussed and compare with those in low-temperature superconducting (LTS) coils.

A current lead with kA capacity and small AC loss is being developed for use in superconducting current limiting devices cooled with liquid helium. A gas-cooled type current lead using Bi-based oxide superconducting bulk materials was examined to clarify the effects of the current lead geometry and the use of multiple current leads. This paper presents the results of experiments and numerical simulations based on the finite element method taking consideration of non-uniform transport current distribution among multiple current leads connected in parallel. The simulations are performed to investigate the relationship between the geometry of current leads and the amount of heat flow into a cryostat. In the simulations, the AC loss caused by both mutual and self-induced magnetic fields of multiple current leads is taken into account. The influence of AC loss, the joule heat generated by the contact resistance at joints of NbTi/CuNi multi-strand cables and the HTS bars, and the return passage for gas on the operating characteristics of the HTS current leads are evaluated.
