ビザンツ帝国史、とくにビザンツ帝国とコーカサスの関係史を専門としています。

目下の研究テーマは以下の通りです

①ビザンツ帝国の東方境域統治と在地有力者

イスラーム世界での政治的混乱が見られた10-11世紀、ビザンツ帝国は東方に大きく版図を拡大しました。これは、７世紀以降ギリシア語話者正教徒を中心としてきたビザンツにとって、多くの非ギリシア語話者や非正教徒を帝国領内に抱える大きな転機となりました。ビザンツはそうした人々をどのように扱い、統治しようとしたのか、また在地の人々はそれに対してどのような反応を示したのかについて、現地語資料が豊富に残るコーカサスの事例を中心に、ギリシア語・現地語（特にアルメニア語）双方の史料から明らかにすることを試みています。異文化の接触・交流という意味でも比較史的な視座を提供するケーススタディになると考えています。

 

②ビザンツ帝国と周辺諸勢力の関係における宗教文化の役割

そうした異文化の接触・交流は双方の共通点と差異を強烈に意識する契機となりました。特に、同じキリスト教徒でありながらカルケドン公会議をめぐってビザンツと教義を異にするアルメニアの人々のなかには、その独自性を強調してビザンツへの反発を強める一派も存在していました。彼らを取り込む上で重視されたのが同じキリスト教徒であることを、教義問題に触れずとも確認できる宗教文化でした。ビザンツが4-5世紀から首都コンスタンティノープルに集積してきた聖遺物は、特に重要な役割を果たしました。しかし、一枚岩ではなかったアルメニアでは、ビザンツ由来の聖遺物も様々なかたちで受容されることになります。ビザンツとアルメニアの間での聖遺物外交はどのように展開し、現地文化の変容にどのように影響を与えたのか、包括的に明らかにすることを目指しています。

    The paper reassesses the work of Uxtanes of Sebasteia as a source written by an Armenian priest in Sebasteia under the Byzantine rule in 980s. According to Stepanos Taroneci and other sources, there were social and religious tensions between Byzantines and Armenians in the city, as a result of the simultaneous progress of the influx of Armenians and the reinforcement of the Byzantine military presence. This led to the interactions among Byzantines and Armenians several ways. As a strong anti-Chalcedonianist, Uxtanes tried to reflect his antagonism in his description of the Roman past in Part One of his work (on the history of Armenians until fifth century). But at the same time, he is keen to underline the presence of the Armenians who work with Romans. This is also the projection of the situation surrounding him. There were also Armenians who tried to approach the Byzantine rule in the tenth century. Uxtanes is of course criticising them, but in doing so he implies their presence. Thus, Uxtanes' work can be an important clue to understand the multiple interactions among Byzantines and Armenians in the frontier, during the age of the Byzantine eastward movement.

    Recent studies on the political and military history in the reign of Leo VI (r. 886–912) tend to emphasise his role as a central authoritative figure. However, close scrutiny on the emperor’s military treatise called the Taktika and collation with the actual situation offers a different picture on his view concerning the warfare in the eastern frontier. In chapter XVIII of the Taktika on the manoeuvres against the raiding Arabs, Leo emphasises the importance of autonomous regional defence undertaken by local forces. When understood collectively with other sources, this can be an attestation of Leo’s willingness to delegate power to potentates in order to resist the incessant raids more effectively, despite the possible centrifugal effects. This sort of interaction between the central government and the frontier can be comprehended a the broader context of the long-term continuity of the Byzantine flexible frontier policy from the ninth to the eleventh centuries.

    今年度は本研究の第二の課題であるセルジューク朝侵入期のアルメニアの社会・文化の変容についての考察を進めた。本来ならば写本奥付や碑文の実見調査を行いたいところであったが、新型コロナウイルス感染拡大の影響から、断念せざるを得なかった。しかし、刊行史料の分析等を通して、以下のような成果を得ることができた。
    昨年度の研究成果から、セルジューク朝侵入前夜のビザンツの統治に対して、アルメニアの諸勢力は複雑な反応を示していたことが明らかとなった。すなわち、不安定な状況でビザンツを頼りにし続けるものもいる一方で、軍事支援を見込めないビザンツに見切りをつけ、セルジューク朝に対して新たな秩序をもたらす存在として期待を寄せる人々も存在していたのである。このなかでの社会や文化の変容も、政治情勢の影響を強く受けたものであった。興味深い点が、キリスト教文化における「脱ビザンツ化」のような動向が見られたことである。ビザンツ拡大期および統治期においては、帝国側からのキリスト教要素、とくに複雑な教義論争を持ち出さずとも両者の共通点を確認できる聖遺物が、アルメニアとの交渉に際して持ち込まれていた。そうした聖遺物、特に聖十字架は親ビザンツ派に受容される一方で、反発も喚起し、いっそう独自のキリスト教文化を強調するアルメニア側の動向も見られた。ビザンツ支配が後退し始めてからは、ビザンツに由来しないヴァラグの聖十字架など、独自の聖遺物崇敬が再評価されていたことが、史書『アルツルニ家の歴史』などから見ることができた。その一方で、世俗有力者の間でビザンツ由来の称号の使用が続くなど、完全にビザンツ色が払拭されたわけではないこともわかった。11世紀のアルメニアは移行期と位置づけることができ、セルジューク朝侵入が続く中で社会・文化面にどのような変化が起こったのか、特に東方からの影響を加味して経時的な考察を進める必要がある。
