    令和3(2021)年度は、本調査の初年度であり、前年度の予備調査に基づき作成したタスクセットを使い、学習者コーパスデータを収集するとともに、前年度の予備調査で収集したデータを使用し、横断的に中学1年から3年までの発話データと作文データを、語彙サイズテスト結果及びTOEFL Primary Speaking Test (TPST) のスコアと比較しながら、分析を行った。
    まず、初年度に開発した6セット分のスピーキングタスクの予備調査の分析を行い、年2回3年分のタスクに偏りがないようにタスクのセットを決定した。次に、3月に収集した第2回予備調査のデータの書き起こし・整形作業を行い、コーパスデータ化した。
    スピーキングデータの収集は、第1回目を7月下旬、第2回目を3月上旬に行った。スピーキング能力の外在指標としてのTOEFL Primary Speaking Testは、1月中旬に行った。また、語彙サイズテストは、第1回目のスピーキングデータ収集時に行い、ライティングデータの収集は、第2回目のスピーキングデータ収集時に行った。
    データの収集と並行して、前年度収集した予備調査から得られた中学1年から3年までのデータを横断的に各学年間の比較を行った。外在指標としてのTOEFL Primary Speaking Testのスコアおよび語彙サイズテストで学年間の差を確認したとともに、統語発達指標の一つであるIPSynを使い、スピーキングデータにおいてもライティングデータにおいても学年間で同様な統語発達が見られることを確認した。

    2021年度は引き続き研究文献の網羅的な収集と整理を行った。それと並行して、データの収集と総点検が完了しているデータのうち、①高校生の発話を3年間にわたって継続的に収集した縦断的スピーキング学習者コーパス (Longitudinal Corpus of Spoken English: LOCSE)の分析を行った。もう一方のデータ、②学習者に関するメタ情報は、研究の進行状況を見ながら、これから進める予定である。

    全国の中学・高等学校の英語教員が主な読者層であると想定される『英語教育』(大修館書店)に研究成果を全6回の連載記事(スピーキング力と関わる言語項目の発達、スピーキングにおける流暢さと複雑さの変化、スピーキングの自動採点など)としてまとめた。またこの連載では、本科研の研究成果を鑑みながら、スピーキング指導上のポイント(例えば、理由を述べるために使用する'so'を、発話の沈黙を埋めたり、考える時間を作ったりするために使わないようにするなど)を提案した。

    国際学会において1件の発表、国内研究会において2件の発表を行った。また英語学習者のスピーキングに関する研究に取り組んでいる他の科研チームと共同シンポジウム(オンライン)を開催し、本科研も研究成果を発表した。そしてこのシンポジウムに合わせ、LOCSEホームページの整備も行った。雑誌投稿論文が1本出版される予定であり、この論文では、L2スピーキングにおける産出語数の増加メカニズムについての分析を行った。その結果、産出語数の増加、つまりはスピーキング能力の発達を予測できる指標として、従属接続詞、等位接続詞、強調詞、名詞、前置詞句、現在形などがあげられることが明らかになった。

The meta-information on learners was also collected using multiple survey methods to study the developmental process of high school students' speaking skills. We also began a descriptive study to explain the developmental process of English-speaking skills and an empirical study to identify factors contributing to their development.

    This research project aimed to investigate the conditions facing teachers of EFL writing in four countries/regions in Asia: Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The main achievements of the project were as follows: we used surveys to investigate the current state of EFL writing; we also held two international symposia in order to share and compare ideas and findings and clarify common issues and challenges as well as future directions in the teaching and research of EFL writing. We also carried out a close analysis of a learner corpus, which illustrated the specific characteristics of the writing products of EFL learners in the four countries/regions. As a final product we published the book “EFL Writing in East Asia: Practice, Perception and Perspectives,” in which we share the fruits of the research and developments in this field with other teachers and researchers.

    In order to implement and promote successful DDL in multilingual foreign language classrooms, we have developed and released two new, simple to use, freeware parallel corpus tools: an online concordancer, WebParaNews, and a standalone multilingual concordancer, AntPConc. The effectiveness of DDL teaching materials for English and Japanese language education using these tools and Japanese-English parallel corpora was measured by pre- and post-tests. Results showed significant gains and positive student feedback, indicating this approach was useful for improving grammar and vocabulary.

    平成18年度に完成した日本人英語学習者の話し言葉と書き言葉のデータ収集を続行し,学習者コーパスの規模を拡大させた。その上で,そのデータを利用した研究を行った。
    1.日本人英語学習者の書き言葉の概観的な分析は『日本人中高生1万人の英語コーパスJEFLL Corpus-中高生が書く英文の実態とその分析-』の中で,中間言語のエラー分析の部として出版された。品詞別のエラーの傾向について,中学1年から高校3年までのデータを学年別にエラータイプ(脱落、過剰、置換)の観点から記述した。また同書籍の中で,日本人英語学習者が誤りやすいとされる"come to do/become to do"という項目について,British National Corpusを用い,母語話者と学習者の使用状況はどのような点において,どの程度違いがあるかについて分析し,教育現場での指導についての提言を行った。
    2.PacSLRF2008,The 3^<rd>National Symposium on SLA,Beijing大会(2008年3月23日)において,研究成果を発表した。国内外の第二言語習得研究やコーパス言語学の研究者が参加するこの学会では,学習者データの分析方法,および中国人英語学習者コーパスを用いた最新の研究動向について,様々な情報と新たな知見を得た。以下は,研究結果の内容についてである。(1)動詞の相,および形の選択に関しては,時間的制約が少なく,学習者がその項目に注意を向けることが出来れば,誤答率が下がる。(2)名詞の単複のように規則が単純であっても,日本語には存在しない項目は,時間的制約が少なく注意を向けることができる状況においても,誤答率が上がる。(3)主語、動詞の人称、数の不一致は,学習者の注意に関係なく,習熟度が上がれば,誤答率が下がる。(4)語彙や時制など,学習者の注意にも,習熟度にも影響されることがない項目がある。

    The projects aimed to achieve the following three goals: (a) the critical survey of available error annotation schemes for learner corpora, (b) the design and implementation of our original error annotation scheme for the JEFLL Corpus, and c the compilation of a parallel version of the JEFLL Corpus, consisting of the original essays and their corrected version by a native speaker.
    For the first two years, we did some major literature review and the survey of error annotation schemes and tagging systems used for learner language analysis. Then we revised our original version of error annotation scheme by integrating multi-layered & multi-modal annotation models. We also developed a stand-off annotation tool, using a open-source generic annotation tool, MMAX2.
    At the same time, we have completed the proofread version of the JEFLL Corpus (a corpus of free compositions by secondary school Japanese learners of English), which has a set of the original data and its corrected version in parallel. With this resource, we will be able to accurately construct the error-tagged version of the JEFLL Corpus. Since we had to terminate the project in three years, instead of four, we could not make the sample error-tagged version of the JEFLL, which should be the goal for the future project.
