    Abstract

    Although embedment properties are vital to timber engineering, the behavior and strain distributions in wood-based panels have not been clarified in detail. Our early studies suggested four possible causes of failure behavior and strain distribution: (i) two types of failure behavior (in-plane and out-of-plane failure); (ii) enlargement of the stress-spreading range with increasing load step; (iii) reduction of the stress-spreading range (normalized by dowel diameter) with increasing dowel diameter; and (iv) preferential stress spreading in the vertical and horizontal directions along the strong and weak-axis specifications, respectively. However, these hypotheses were not supported by actual observations. The present study aims to observe and clarify the surface strain distribution via digital image correlation and the internal failure behavior via computed tomography scanning. Most results of the wood-based panel specimens (plywood and oriented strand board) did not contradict the above hypotheses. The failure behaviors of plywood and oriented strand board are likely determined by the direction of the veneer fibers and the layer’s position, respectively. Within the strong axial layer of plywood, fibers on both sides of the dowel were densified by fibers dissociated immediately above the dowel, whereas the weak axial layer in plywood was deformed like a timber under partial compression perpendicular to the grain. In contrast, oriented strand board under an embedding stress exhibited a circularly distributed strain and a dispersed void area in its outer layer. Densification was observed only in the inner layer.

    Abstract

    Embedment properties are vital to timber structural designs, and many types of wood-based structural panels have been developed for diverse uses. Comprehensive and systematic studies regarding the embedment properties of wood-based structural panels are limited. In this study, a jig that allows the observation of fracture processes is developed, and a monotonic tensile embedment test is conducted on plywood, oriented strandboard (both strong and weak axes), particleboard, medium density fiberboard, and hardboard. The parameters used in the test are the dowel diameter, pilot hole size, and end and edge distances. The effects of these parameters on the embedment properties (i.e., the failure mode, ductility, maximum stress, and yield stress) are discussed comprehensively. The failure mode is determined by the edge distance. At a sufficient edge distance, ductile failure occurs, and the load is maintained until the remaining end distance reaches a certain value. The maximum stress and yield stress are analyzed quantitatively via standardized multiple regression analysis. The results suggest the following: (i) The ratio of the in-plane strength to the internal bond strength is related to the failure behavior; (ii) the dowel diameter, fiber direction, and load levels affect the stress spread pattern of the embedment pressure.

    When using wood-based panels as structural members, it is essential to understand its in-plane shear characteristics. Two-rail shear test defined by ASTM D2719 as an in-plane shear test commonly is used in Japan. However it is not enough to examine whether the pure shear stress is uniformly distributed in the specimen. The objective of this reserch is to clarify the phenomenon concerned with axis and distribution of strain in specimens and to clarify how the phenomenon affects the evaluation of the test result. Medium density fiber board and plywood were used as specimen. At first, FEM analysis was carried out. As a result, a stress concentration was observed at the corner of the specimen. Analyzing a model with slits at the corner, change of strain distribution caused by yield and failure at the corner was studied. In the experimental result, shear strain distribution was different from the analytical result of no-slit model. load- x strain curves and load-y ones were classified based on their shapes. As a result, a certain trend was observed about MDF, but it was not observed about plywood. Judging from experimental and analytical study, yield and failure process was determined about MDF, but about plywood, they occurred randomly. It is thought to be because MDF is homogeneous material and plywood is oriented material.

    合板、OSB、パーティクルボード、MDFについて引張型の支圧試験を実施した。接合具径、縁距離、端距離、先孔径をパラメータとし、2000体以上に及ぶ膨大且つ網羅的な実験を行い、木質系面材の支圧特性の基礎データを収集した。実験途中の破壊過程を観察可能な実験治具を用いて、支圧応力による材料の破壊メカニズムの解明にも着手した。縁距離が短いときには接合具の横全体が引張破壊をし、脆性的な破壊が生じた。縁距離が十分にあれば一定の端距離に達するまで荷重を保持でき、粘り強い破壊になることが明らかになった。また構造用面材の剥離強度に対する引張強度の比が大きければ、支圧破壊時に表層がめくれあがる破壊が生じ、逆にその比が低ければ面内の引張・せん断破壊が卓越した。
    また得られた応力-変位曲線から降伏応力、最大耐力、初期剛性、終局変位の特性値を得た。終局変位から破壊時に残存していた端距離の値を算出すると、その値は概ね一定の値を示していた。木材であれば支圧応力を受けると変位~20mmまでで割裂破壊を生じることが多いが、構造用面材は元々の端距離に関わらず一定の位置までの変形能力を有することが明らかになった。他の特性値である、降伏耐力。最大耐力、初期剛性に関しては標準化重回帰分析を用いて各パラメータが各特性値に与える影響度を定量的に比較した。先孔が降伏耐力に与える影響度は最大耐力に与える影響度と比較して高く、縁距離・端距離が与える影響度に関してはその逆の傾向を示していた。このことから最大耐力時の応力範囲は降伏耐力時の応力範囲と比較して広いことが示唆された。また接合具径に関しては剥離強度に対する引張強度の比が大きければ径が最大耐力に与える影響が大きく、また初期剛性に関してはその逆の傾向を示していた。これらの成果は構造用面材が支圧応力を受けたときの破壊メカニズムの解明や影響因子の特定に資するものと考えられる。
