Abstract

The mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides (cuprate) remains elusive, with the pseudogap phase considered a potential factor. Recent attention has focused on a long-range symmetry-broken charge-density wave (CDW) order in the underdoped regime, induced by strong magnetic fields. Here by ^63,65Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of a long-range CDW order in the optimally doped Bi₂Sr_2−xLa_xCuO₆ superconductor, induced by in-plane strain exceeding ∣ε∣ = 0.15 %, which deliberately breaks the crystal symmetry of the CuO₂ plane. We find that compressive/tensile strains reduce superconductivity but enhance CDW, leaving superconductivity to coexist with CDW. The findings show that a long-range CDW order is an underlying hidden order in the pseudogap state, not limited to the underdoped regime, becoming apparent under strain. Our result sheds light on the intertwining of various orders in the cuprates.

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A fundamental problem posed from the study of correlated electron compounds, of which heavy-fermion systems are prototypes, is the need to understand the physics of states near a quantum critical point (QCP). At a QCP, magnetic order is suppressed continuously to zero temperature and unconventional superconductivity often appears. Here, we report pressure (<jats:italic>P</jats:italic>)-dependent <jats:sup>115</jats:sup>In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRh<jats:sub>0.5</jats:sub>Ir<jats:sub>0.5</jats:sub>In<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>. These experiments reveal an antiferromagnetic (AF) QCP at <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$${P}_{ { \rm{c } } }^{ { \rm{AF } } }=1.2$$</jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML">

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Superconductivity appears in the cuprates when a spin order is destroyed, while the role of charge is less known. Recently, charge density wave (CDW) was found below the superconducting dome in YBa<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cu<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>
<jats:italic>y</jats:italic>
</jats:sub> when a high magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the CuO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> plane, which was suggested to arise from incipient CDW in the vortex cores that becomes overlapped. Here by <jats:sup>63</jats:sup>Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of CDW induced by an in-plane field, setting in above the dome in single-layered Bi<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Sr<jats:sub>2−<jats:italic>x</jats:italic>
</jats:sub>La<jats:sub>
<jats:italic>x</jats:italic>
</jats:sub>CuO<jats:sub>6</jats:sub>. The onset temperature <jats:italic>T</jats:italic><jats:sub>CDW</jats:sub> takes over the antiferromagnetic order temperature <jats:italic>T</jats:italic><jats:sub>N</jats:sub> beyond a critical doping level at which superconductivity starts to emerge, and scales with the pseudogap temperature <jats:italic>T</jats:italic>*. These results provide important insights into the relationship between spin order, CDW and the pseudogap, and their connections to high-temperature superconductivity.</jats:p>

We report the pressure (P)-temperature (T) phase diagram of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeRhIn5 and CeIn3 revealed by the In-115 nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation (T-1) measurement. In the itinerant magnet CeRhIn5, we found that the Neel temperature T-N is reduced at P greater than or equal to 1.23 GPa with an emergent pseudogap behavior. In CeIn3, the localized magnetic character is robust against the application of pressure up to Psimilar to1.9 GPa, beyond which the system evolves into an itinerant regime in which the resistive superconducting phase emerges. We discuss the relationship between the phase diagram and the magnetic fluctuations.

We report evidence for unconventional superconductivity in (formula presented) at a pressure (formula presented) above the critical pressure (formula presented) revealed by measurements of the nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation time (formula presented) and ac susceptibility (ac- (formula presented) Both measurements of (formula presented) and ac- (formula presented) have pointed to a superconducting transition at (formula presented) which is much lower than the onset temperature (formula presented) at zero resistance. We report In-115 nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) measurements of the pressure(P)-induced superconductor CeRhIn5 in the antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) states. In the AF region, the internal field H-int at the In site is substantially reduced from H-int= 1.75 kOe at P=0 to 0.39 kOe at P=1.23 GPa, while the Neel temperature slightly changes with increasing P. This suggests that either the size in the ordered moment M-Q(P) or the angle theta(P) between the direction of M-Q(P) and the tetragonal c axis is extrapolated to zero at P*=1.6+/-0.1 GPa at which a bulk SC transition is no longer emergent. In the SC state at P=2.1 GPa, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (115)(1/T-1) has revealed a T-3 dependence without the coherence peak just below T-c, giving evidence for the unconventional superconductivity. The dimensionality of the magnetic fluctuations in the normal state is also discussed.
