    <title>Abstract</title>Electronic instabilities in transition metal compounds often spontaneously form orbital molecules, which consist of orbital-coupled metal ions at low temperature. Recent local structural studies utilizing the pair distribution function revealed that preformed orbital molecules appear disordered even in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. However, it is unclear whether preformed orbital molecules are dynamic or static. Here, we provide clear experimental evidence of the slow dynamics of disordered orbital molecules realized in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase of LiVS2, which exhibits vanadium trimerization upon cooling below 314 K. Unexpectedly, the preformed orbital molecules appear as a disordered zigzag chain that fluctuate in both time and space under electron irradiation. Our findings should advance studies on soft matter physics realized in an inorganic material due to disordered orbital molecules.

    We discovered that sintered bodies of Co3BO5 exhibit negative thermal expansion (NTE), despite positive expansion of the crystal lattice. Dilatometry results show that, at temperatures of 400–550 K, sintered bodies of Co3BO5 exhibit NTE. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments show that the crystal structure is maintained and that the lattice thermal expansion is positive. However, in this temperature range, the crystal lattice exhibits a great degree of anisotropic thermal deformation. The material microstructural effects found to exist for some NTE materials, such as Ca2RuO4 and Ti2O3, probably induced the NTE. Findings obtained from these experiments also demonstrate that Cu doping onto the Co sites alters the operating temperatures of NTE. Materials for which the unit cells exhibit anisotropic thermal deformation represent a vast reservoir of NTE materials.

    We elucidate the transport properties and electronic structures of distorted rutile-type WO2. Electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements of high-quality single crystals revealed the transport property characteristics of topological materials; these characteristics included an extremely large magnetoresistance of 13 200% (2 K and 9 T) and a very high carrier mobility of 25 700 cm2 V−1 s−1 (5 K). First-principles calculations revealed Dirac nodal lines (DNLs) near the Fermi energy in the electronic structure when spin–orbit interactions (SOIs) were absent. Although these DNLs mostly disappeared in the presence of SOIs, band crossings at high-symmetry points in the reciprocal space existed as Dirac points. Furthermore, DNLs protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry persisted on the ky = π/b plane. The unique transport properties originating from the topological electronic structure of chemically and thermally stable WO2 could represent an opportunity to investigate the potential electronic applications of the material.

    We discovered large electric-field-induced strain in pyro-vanadate-phosphate Cu2−xZnxV1.8P0.2O7. Distinct from conventionally used piezoelectric materials including lead-zirconate-titanate, this material expands almost isotropically at room temperature when an electric field is applied. This volume change, exceeding 1000 ppm under the field of E = 3900 V/cm, is of the largest class induced by an electric field. The strain is phenomenologically interpreted as electrostriction because it is symmetric about E = 0 and because it obeys a higher term than E-linear such as E squared. The present x-ray diffraction experiments suggest that the applied electric field distorts the crystal lattice, although there is no structural phase transition. This material performs a volume-change-driven actuator function that is distinct from the strain-driven counterpart of piezoelectric materials. The discovery of actuator functionality in a material system with a non-perovskite structure, unlike the actuator materials developed to date, is a major breakthrough for future actuator engineering.

    This report describes the actuator functionality of a ceramic composite that uses the volume change caused by the insulator–metal (I–M) transition of VO2. When an electrical field was applied at 295 K, 50 vol. %-VO2/Al2O3 ceramic composite underwent the I–M transition because the VO2 powder dispersed in the composite became metallic. Simultaneous measurement of I–V characteristics and linear strain demonstrated that this I–M transition was accompanied by a positive strain. This strain increased with increase in the limit current value, which limits excessive current flow after transition. The strain exceeded 1300 ppm at maximum. Its magnitude corresponded to the volume change obtained from thermal expansion measurements on the composite. This composite performs a volume-change-driven actuator function that is distinct from the strain-driven counterpart of piezoelectric materials.

    Abstract

    Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is exhibited over the entire x range for Cu1.8Zn0.2V2–xPxO7. In particular, dilatometric measurements using epoxy resin matrix composites containing the spray-dried powder demonstrated that the thermal expansion suppressive capability was almost unchanged for x ≤ 1.0. With increasing x, the X-ray diffraction peak position moves systematically, but some peaks are extremely broad and/or asymmetric, suggesting disorder in the internal structure. The crystallographic analysis confirmed NTE enhancement by microstructural effects at least for x = 0.2. Preliminary measurements suggest higher resistivity and lower dielectric constant than that of pure vanadate, which is suitable for application to electronic devices.

    Using light to manipulate materials into desired states is one of the goals in condensed matter physics, since light control can provide ultrafast and environmentally friendly photonics devices. However, it is generally difficult to realise a photo-induced phase which is not merely a higher entropy phase corresponding to a high-temperature phase at equilibrium. Here, we report realisation of photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5 including the excitonic insulator phase using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the dynamic properties of the system, we determine that screening of excitonic correlations plays a key role in the timescale of the transition to the metallic phase, which supports the existence of an excitonic insulator phase at equilibrium. The non-equilibrium metallic state observed unexpectedly in the direct-gap excitonic insulator opens up a new avenue to optical band engineering in electron-hole coupled systems.

    Using light to manipulate materials into desired states is one of the goals in condensed matter physics, since light control can provide ultrafast and environmentally friendly photonics devices. However, it is generally difficult to realise a photo-induced phase which is not merely a higher entropy phase corresponding to a high-temperature phase at equilibrium. Here, we report realisation of photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5 including the excitonic insulator phase using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the dynamic properties of the system, we determine that screening of excitonic correlations plays a key role in the timescale of the transition to the metallic phase, which supports the existence of an excitonic insulator phase at equilibrium. The non-equilibrium metallic state observed unexpectedly in the direct-gap excitonic insulator opens up a new avenue to optical band engineering in electron-hole coupled systems.

    ここ10年で行われてきた物質開拓の試みにより、無機柔粘性結晶状態は量体化分子系に普遍的に現れることが明らかになった。物質の多様性を背景とした物性・機能開拓と外場制御を行い、無機柔粘性結晶ならではの特性をその学理と共に明らかにすることを目指す。 具体的には、磁場や一軸応力を利用した無機柔粘性結晶状態の制御、無機柔粘性結晶に由来して現れるフォノンに着目した輸送特性の調査などが研究の軸であり、初年度は特に外場制御に着目して研究を進めたい。放射光X線を磁場・一軸応力などの制御技術と組み合わせた実験を実施し、一つでも多くの無機柔粘性結晶の制御を実現する。

    低温で量体化とよばれる分子形成を生じる系において、1000T級の高磁場によって結合を切断できる可能性が示されている(Y.H. Matsuda et al., Nat. Commun. 11 (2020) 3591. )。本研究では、こうした量体化系では高温において前駆現象となる短距離的分子形成が普遍的に生じることを先行研究で見出している。こうした短距離秩序状態は低温で現れる量体化分子状態よりもはるかに弱く、結合切断に要する磁場は低いと予想される。「非摂動磁場による化学結合破壊の化学」を、① 研究しやすい低磁場下で実現し、② 結合状態についての知見を実験的に得る、ことが本研究の目標である。

    層状三角格子系LiVS2では、低温でバナジウムが自発的に集合した三量体「分子」の形成を生じる。高温に上げると、この三量体分子は消失し、レギュラーな三角格子が復活するものと考えられてきたが、最近の我々の研究により、このバナジウムの三角格子の内部において、数100nm程度の相関長を持つジグザグ鎖状の分子が出現し、配向を変えながらゆっくりと揺らいでいることがわかってきた。三角格子の中に潜むジグザグ鎖状の超秩序構造が示すダイナミクスと、温度変化に伴う相関長の変化を、時分割ナノビームX線回折法を用いて明らかにすることが本研究の目的である。
    本研究課題では、層状LiVS2に創出する超秩序構造のダイナミクスをナノビームX線を用いた回折実験で観測することを目的としている。超秩序構造は3種類の配向をもっており、各々のドメインが異なる位置に超格子ピークを生み出す。これら3通りのパターンは時間依存して変化する特徴をもつことから、これらのパターンの時間変化に応じた超格子ピークの「きらめき」が回折像に現れるはずである。SPring-8 BL36XUにおいて、100nmオーダーまで絞ったナノビームX線を照射し、100msecの時間幅で数100枚の回折像を取得する実験を行った。得られた一部の回折像には、強度に揺らぎを持つ超格子ピークが観測され、目的とするダイナミクスの揺らぎが観測できた。しかしながら、試料によっては強度の揺らぎが現れない超格子ピークも存在した。これは、試料厚みや層間のLiイオンの充填量など、いくつかの要因に起因していると考えられる。今後はダイナミクスを確実に捉えることができる実験条件を考案し、再実験を計画したい。

    また、岡山大学グループとの共同研究で行ったBi2Rh3Se2の回折実験では大きな展開があった。250 K付近で磁化率の変化を伴う電気抵抗率の増大を示す物質である。CDW転移と議論されているが、その起源は構造面から明らかにされてはいなかった。放射光X線を用いた単結晶構造解析により、結晶内部のBi2-Rh4というごく一部のユニットにおいてのみ、顕著な原子変位が確認された。従来のCDWで期待される格子全体の変調とは様相が異なっており、今後は領域内外の理論研究者との共同研究を経て、早期に論文化することを目指したい。
    ナノビームX線回折実験を実施し、一部の試料で超秩序構造のダイナミクスを観測することに成功したことから、初年度の当初目標は達成できたと考える。一方で、コントロールできない試料依存性があり、ダイナミクスの観測条件が不確かである点が今後の課題として残った。また、領域内共同研究から、Bi2Rh3Se2という当初予定していなかった物質系に対しても構造研究に取り組み、Bi2-Rh4という局所的なユニットの変調が相転移の起源であることを突き止めた。既に領域内外の理論研究者と共同研究を始めており、また、物質には多様性があることから、実験研究にも次年度の更なる成果に向けた展開性が期待できる。以上のような状況から、(2) おおむね順調に進展している、が適切であると考えられる。
    LiVS2の超秩序構造のナノビームX線回折実験については、試料クオリティのさらなる向上が求められる。また、実験中の試料の水和による品質劣化を懸念して、実験条件の見直しが必要となる。これらの課題に2024前期中に取り組み、2024後期に再実験を予定したい。Bi2Rh3Se2については、より高品質な試料を準備し、再実験を行いたい。温度依存性を正確に測定することが必要と考えている。また、類縁物質のBi2Rh3S2の構造解析にも取り組み、Bi2Rh3Se2との比較を行いたい。2024年度に新たに予定しているTaTe2の蛍光X線ホログラフィー実験も2024年度のテーマとなっている。高温で現れる二量体化に向けた超秩序構造の同定を目標としており、6月のSPring-8ビームタイムにて測定を予定している。以上が今後の研究の予定となる。

    二次元三角格子系LiVS2では、構成元素のバナジウムが配向の異なるジグザグ鎖の短距離秩序が自発的に形成され、これが時間・空間的に揺らいで現れる。これは、ソフトマターの一種、柔粘性結晶に分類される状態であり、近年研究が盛んに行われる『量子液晶』の格子版といえる新奇な状態である。本研究ではLiVS2の無機ソフトマター状態を規定する物理パラメータをX線吸収分光法を活用した独自アイデアに基づく時分割測定により求め、無機ソフトマター発現のメカニズムを探ることを目的としている。
    課題の採択時期と放射光施設の申請時期の兼ね合いのため、2021年度後期には放射光施設で目的とするX線吸収分光法を活用した実験を行うことができなかった。そのため、実験を2022年度に集中的に行うことを念頭に、2021年度後期は実験に用いる単結晶試料の純良化に注力した。合成した単結晶試料は空気中不安定であることから、二重のキャピラリで試料を保護し、中にアルゴンガスを充てんさせたオリジナルな試料準備法を考案し、SPring-8 BL02B2での単結晶X線回折実験やBL43LXUでの非弾性X線散乱実験を通じて試料のクオリティのチェックを行った。いずれの実験でも相転移温度となる314 Kで明確なスペクトルの変化が確認され、純良単結晶の育成に成功していることが判明した。
    X線吸収分光法はSPring-8のBL36XUで実施することを計画しており、2022A期のマシンタイムを確保している。また、実験に向けてビームライン担当者と打ち合わせを重ねており、実験実施に必要なヒーターの購入も完了している。以上のように、2021年度には目的とするX線吸収分光法は行えていないが、2022年度における実験実施のために必要な準備を入念に行うことができた。

    一硫化サマリウムSmSの価数揺動に起因する4f電子数と体積の相関を、徹底的な組成の制御とFermi準位付近の電子構造やSmの価数状態の評価により解明し、革新的なアクチュエータ材料を創製する。SmSは(4f)6と(4f)5(5d)1、2つの電子配置が拮抗しており、後者は格子体積が9%小さい。前者は絶縁体で7F0の非磁性状態、後者は金属的で6H5/2の磁性状態であるため、電場や磁場により絶縁体-金属転移を誘起できれば、体積を制御できる。これを活用し、ピエゾ材料や磁歪材料のような従来の「歪駆動アクチュエータ」材料の欠点を克服しうる、新しい「体積変化駆動アクチュエータ」材料を創製する。

    本課題では申請者が二次元三角格子系LiVS2で最近見出した、柔粘性結晶相発現の背景物理の解明と、同様の性質を示す新たな物質系の開発を目指す。LiVS2は314 K以下でバナジウム三量体化を伴う金属-非磁性絶縁体転移を示す。高温常磁性相では、バナジウムがジグザグ状の短距離秩序を形成しており、このジグザグ鎖の形成パターンが時間・空間的にゆっくりと変動する。ジグザグ鎖のパターンは3種類存在し、これらの配向はすべて異なることから、この格子ダイナミクスは無機化合物で実現した柔粘性結晶状態と定義される。同様の『無機柔粘性結晶』の新たな候補物質の開発を通じて、その発現メカニズムを明らかにすることを目指す。
    低温で量体化転移を示す周辺物質の探索として、スピネル格子系LiRh2O4, βパイロクロア型CsW2O6という二物質に対する平均構造/局所構造解析を行った。前者においては、電荷秩序と二量体化が現れる低温相の結晶構造を明らかにし、この電荷秩序パターンが1950年代に理論提案されながらこれまでに実現例のなかった『アンダーソン条件』を満たす初めてのスピネル化合物であることを突き止めた。後者については、『3中心2電子結合』で形成された三角系型の三量体を持つ物質として知られているが、局所的にみると三量体が実現していないように見えることを明らかにした。おそらくは、三量体と思われたものが3通りの従来型二量体がガラス(液体)的に現れており、平均構造として電子不足型の三量体として捉えられたものと考えている。面白いことに、LiRh2O4, CsW2O6の両方に共通して、高温の常磁性相においては短距離秩序が発達していることを示唆する結果を得た。本研究のターゲットである量体化系で現れる無秩序分子が様々な物質系で普遍的に現れていることを示していると考えられる。
    また、本研究課題では、高温でジグザグ鎖のダイナミクスが現れるLiVS2に対する交流抵抗の周波数依存性からダイナミクスの定量測定を行うことを目指している。この実験には大型単結晶が必要となり、申請時には数年を要するものと見込んでいたが、初年度の研究で早くも達成することができた。合成は放射光を用いた単結晶XRD測定により確認している。これにより、得られた大型単結晶を用いて2021年度にダイナミクスの定量測定を行う予定である。
    本研究の課題である柔粘性結晶候補物質を複数見出すことに成功し、数年を要すると考えていたLiVS2大型単結晶の育成に一年で成功した。これにより、令和4年度に予定していた交流抵抗の周波数依存性実験を令和3年度に前倒しすることが可能となる。また、[研究実績の概要]には含めていないが、令和3年度に予定している幾つかの物質系の放射光回折実験を予備的におこなうことができた。これにより、令和3年度予定の実験の成功に向けた道筋が見えており、十分な下準備を始めることが出来ている。以上のような理由から、本研究課題は当初の計画以上に進展していると判断する。
    申請時の予定どおり、複数の三角格子系の化合物を対象として放射光を利用した回折実験やSTEM測定を行い、柔粘性結晶実現の可能性を探る。当初の予定にはなかった複数の物質系が候補として加わり始めており、次年度も当初の計画以上の進展が見込める点を強調したい。加えて、令和4年度に予定していた交流抵抗の周波数依存性実験を令和3年度に前倒しで進める予定である。

    We have constructed a comprehensive pressure-temperature phase diagram of the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5. In particular, a partial gap involving electron-lattice interaction appears in the high-pressure semimetallic phase, and superconductivity emerges around a critical pressure where the collapse of the gap is observed. We have also discovered pressure-induced superconductivity in BiS2-based layered compounds located near the semiconductor-semimetal transition and observed the similar phase diagram for Ta2NiSe5.

    We have improved the functionality and elucidated the mechanism of negative thermal expansion (NTE) in Ca2RuO4-y, which shows a huge NTE due to the material microstructural effects consisting of anisotropic thermal deformation of crystal grains and voids. By substituting Ru with Fe or Sn, the operating-temperature range could be expanded while maintaining the volume change related to NTE. Detailed electron diffraction and synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction experiments have shown that the alignment and melting of electron orbitals associated with the previously overlooked monoclinic strain is essentially important. We found the Cu2V2O7 system as a NTE material with the same microstructural effect as Ca2RuO4-y, and succeeded in producing fine particles with a particle size of about 1 μm and exhibiting NTE characteristics comparable to bulk by the spray-drying method.
