We calculate a set of high-energy spectra, such as the Sm <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(3d\)]]></tex-math>X-ray absorption spectrum and X-ray photoemission spectrum using a configuration-interaction full-multiplet theory to investigate the Sm <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(4f\)]]></tex-math>electronic state of SmOs₄Sb₁₂. In the study of SmOs₄Sb₁₂performed so far, the ground state was expressed by a linear combination of the <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(f^{5}\)]]></tex-math>electron configuration and its charge transfer (CT) states, which indicates that the local symmetry is <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(J = 5/2\)]]></tex-math>. In contrast, the present study shows that the ground state expressed by the <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(f^{6}\)]]></tex-math>electron configuration and its CT states can also reproduce the experiments well. We note that the <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(f^{6}\)]]></tex-math>-based ground state, the local symmetry of which is <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(J = 0\)]]></tex-math>, is of great advantage for discussing the experimental result that the heavy fermion state of SmOs₄Sb₁₂is insensitive to the applied magnetic field. We predict that the <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(f^{6}\)]]></tex-math>-based ground state will be justified by the Sm <tex-math version="MathJax"><![CDATA[\(3d\)]]></tex-math>X-ray magnetic circular dichroism.

The nanoscopic origin of the enhancement of the dielectric constant of BaTiO3 nanoparticles was investigated by means of Ti K beta resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy. Two inelastic peaks due to charge-transfer excitations were observed, one of which disappeared as the particle size (d) was reduced, while the other remained unchanged. This is consistent with the fact that tetragonality was also reduced with decreasing d. In the studies on the valence transition in RbMn[Fe(CN)6], the Fe valence was determined by observing the binding energy of the primary Fe 2p photoemission line, while the detailed analysis of the whole Fe 2p X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) has not so far been performed both experimentally and theoretically. In the present study, the Fe 2p XPS is calculated for [Fe(CN)6]3- and [Fe(CN)6]4- cluster models by a configuration-interaction full-multiplet theory. The result shows that the line shape of the Fe 2p XPS is affected by ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and intra-atomic multiplet coupling. It is in clear contrast to the Fe 2p X-ray photoabsorption spectrum (XAS), where metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) plays an important role. It is clearly shown that the difference in the ground-state wavefunction between the [Fe(CN)6]3- and [Fe(CN)6]4- clusters is reflected in the CT satellite structures and the multiplet structures in the Fe 2p XPS. From the analysis of the observed Fe 2p XPS, together with the analysis of the Fe 2p XAS, we conclude that the Fe 3d energy level relative to the C 2p energy level in RbMn[Fe(CN)6] is considerably larger than that in K3Fe(CN)6.

It is known that some of Eu compounds, such as EuNi2(Si1-xGex)2, show the valence mixing phenomenon between a nonmagnetic state Eu3+ (4f6) and a magnetic state Eu2+ (4f7). Recently, the field-induced valence transition of EuNi2(Si1-xGex)2 ($x=0.82$) has been observed, using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) under high magnetic fields. Both spectra show two peaks corresponding to the two valence states, although the Eu2+ state is magnetic while the Eu3+ state is nonmagnetic. In order to understand the phenomenon, we calculate XAS and XMCD spectra based on an effective model, in which the two valence states of Eu and the matrix element between them due to the hybridization of a 4f electron with a conduction electron are taken into consideration. Reproducing XAS and XMCD spectra as a function of the field, we conclude that XAS and XMCD can give detailed information on the degree of the mixing states as well as the valence selective magnetization through the polarization of the 5d states due to that of the 4f states. Thus, the magnetization process of each valence state as a function of the field is discussed in detail in connection with the intensity of XMCD.

The electronic structures of Nd2-xCexCuO4 and La2-xSrxCuO4 are studied using numerical diagonalization calculations for cluster models, Cu5O16, Cu7O20, and Cu8O16. The Fermi energy of Nd2CuO4 used in the experiment is assumed to be pinned at the bottom of the upper Hubbard band, while that of La2CuO4 is assumed to be pinned at the top of the Zhang–Rice singlet band. This assumption enables us to consistently understand the doping dependence of the Cu $2 p$ photoemission and photoabsorption spectra in Nd2-xCexCuO4 and La2-xSrxCuO4 on the basis of the so-called "crossing the gap" picture. The present calculation of Cu $2 p$ photoemission spectrum also shows that core hole screening caused by charge transfer between neighboring CuO4 plaquettes, in other words, nonlocal screening (NLS), is important in Nd2CuO4 as well as in La2CuO4.

A valence fluctuating phenomenon, which is one of the most interesting subjects in strongly correlated electron systems, has been studied theoretically in EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)(2), in which the field-induced valence transition from a nonmagnetic Eu3+ state (4f(6)) to a magnetic Eu2+ state (4f(7)($) under bar (1)) was observed at around 40 Tesla by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Eu L-edges. Here, c denotes a hole in a conduction band. Both XAS and XMCD in fields exhibit two peaks corresponding to the two valence states, although one of them is nonmagnetic. In this paper, we propose a model to explain the field-induced valence transition, in which the hybridization between the 4f(6) state and the 4f(7)(c) under bar (1) state plays an essential role. Comparing XAS and XMCD calculated with experimental data, we fi nd that XAS and XMCD provide us with detailed microscopic information on the mixed valence state through the polarized 5d electrons. Finally, we demonstrate how effective XAS and XMCD are for studying such mixed valence phenomena.

Carbon- and boron-$2 p$ states of superconducting and non-superconducting boron-doped diamond (BDD) samples are measured using soft X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy (XES and XAS) near C- and B-K edges. The electronic structure of B $2 p$ does not show a marked boron-doping dependence, except that a considerable amount of in-gap state in empty states is observed. In C-K XAS spectra, two peaks $H$ and $I$ are observed around the Fermi level. The $H$ peak is attributed to $2 p$ state of carbon first-nearest neighboring to the dopant boron atoms (1NN-C), and the $I$ peak to $2 p$ state of carbon further than 1NN-C from an impurity boron. Incoherent (normal-excitation) XES spectra do not show a large chemical shift by B-doping, but its intensity just below the valence band maximum (VBM) decreases with B-doping. It cannot be interpreted within a simple rigid band model. An elastic peak of $I$-excited C-K XES spectrum and the width of $I$-peak of C-K XAS spectrum suggest that impurity state is localized in non-superconducting BDD but is not in superconducting BDD. Namely impurity state of superconducting BDD is merged with the valence band, and holes in the merged state play an important role in the occurrence of superconductivity of BDD.

We theoretically show that the oxygen <TEX>$1s$</TEX>x-ray photoelectron spectrum (O <TEX>$1s$</TEX>XPS) directly refelcts the unoccupied part of the electronic states of strongly correlated oxides. On the basis of numerically exact diagonalization calculations performed using a finite-size cluster model, we study the electron- or hole-doping dependence of the O <TEX>$1s$</TEX>XPS of two-dimensional copper compounds in detail. The O <TEX>$1s$</TEX>XPS has a weak charge-transfer (CT) satellite structure, which is located at about 10 eV above the main line. In this CT final state, an O <TEX>$2 p$</TEX>valence electron ejected by the O <TEX>$1s$</TEX>core hole potential is transferred to the conduction states. Thus, the line shape of the CT satellite reflects the upper Hubbard band for electron-doped or undoped cuprates and also the Zhang–Rice singlet band for hole-doped cuprates.

Resonant inelastic X－ray scattering (RIXS) using the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>shell of one－dimensional cuprates is compared with that using the O <TEX>$K$</TEX>shell on the basis of numerically－exact diagonalization calculations applied for a finite－size cluster model. Particular attention is paid to the effects of Cu <TEX>$3d$</TEX>orbital degeneracy on the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS and the incident photon energy dependence of the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS. Inclusion of the Cu <TEX>$3d(3z^{2}-r^{2})$</TEX>orbital results in the <TEX>$dd$</TEX>excitation in the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS, which is in accordance with the O <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS. However the excitation mechanism differs for the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS and O <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS. The <TEX>$dd$</TEX>excitation in the Cu <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS is caused through the mixing between the Zhang–Rice singlet (ZRS) and Cu <TEX>$3d(3z^{2}-r^{2})$</TEX>bands, while it is mainly caused by the optical dipole transition process in the case of O <TEX>$K$</TEX>RIXS. Moreover, mixing between the ZRS and Cu <TEX>$3d(3z^{2}-r^{2})$</TEX>bands induces new structures, whose binding energy is higher than that of the structure due to electron–hole pair excitations from the ZRS band to the upper Hubbard band. The angle－resolved photoemission calculation confirms that the mixing between the Cu <TEX>$3d(3z^{2}-r^{2})$</TEX>and ZRS bands is appreciable around the Brillouin zone center in the case of corner－share－type crystal structure.

<p>We report high-resolution polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the O K resonance of NiO showing a rich excitation spectrum. We perform multisite Ni6O19 cluster model calculations, revealing that solid state effects are substantial. We identify a nonlocal charge transfer excitation at 4-5 eV and double-singlet creation at 1.75 eV, both exhibiting significant scattering geometry dependence. Apart from an intense band of local charge transfer excitations (above 5 eV) also dd excitations at 1 eV are observed. Finally, we point out that O K RIXS of correlated metal oxides allows a quantitative and consistent determination of the charge transfer energy Delta and the Hund coupling energy J(H).</p>

The many-body nature of O $1s$ resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) in edge-share-type quasi-one-dimensional cuprates with hole doping is discussed on the basis of finite-size cluster model calculations. In the case of hole-doped systems, the line shape of O $1s$ RXES strongly depends on the incident X-ray energy ($\omega_{\text{in } }$). This is just a manifestation of state-selectivity of RXES. When $\omega_{\text{in } }$ is tuned at the upper Hubbard band, we observe inelastic scattering peaks due to the Zhang–Rice singlet (ZRS) and $dd$ excitations besides the O $2p$ main band emission. On the other hand, when $\omega_{\text{in } }$ is tuned at the ZRS band, the charge-transfer excitation edge region and the $dd$ excitation peaks are significantly enhanced in accordance with the recent experiment for Ca2+xY2-xCu5O10.

We report on the results of angle-resolved photoemission experiments on a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) [Formula presented]-chain compound [Formula presented], which shows a gigantic nonlinear optical effect. A “band” having about 500 meV energy dispersion is found in the first half of the Brillouin zone, but disappears at [Formula presented]. These spectral features are well reproduced by the [Formula presented] chain model with a small charge-transfer energy [Formula presented] compared with that of 1D Cu-O compounds. We propose that this smaller [Formula presented] is the origin of the absence of clear spin-charge separation in the photoemission spectra and the strong nonlinear optical effect. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Multi-Ru-site effects on the photoemission from the Ru 3d core level in Sr ₂ RuO ₄ are discussed on the basis of numerical diagonalization calculations for large-size cluster models. It is shown that the electrons on the Ru 4d ions neighboring the core-hole site participate actively in the core-hole screening, which indicates the importance of so-called "nonlocal screening" in Sr ₂ RuO ₄. However, since it occurs via the Ru 4d(xy)– O 2pπ bonding, the photoemission intensity which corresponds to the nonlocal screening is not large, compared with the Cu 2p photoemission in high-T_c-related cuprates. From the spectral analysis, the Coulomb interaction strength between Ru 4d electrons is estimated to be comparable with the width of Ru dε bands. In other words, Sr ₂ RuO ₄ belongs to a category of strongly correlated electron systems.

Zhang-Rice singlet excitation around 2 eV is observed, distinguished from Cu (formula presented) excitations, by a symmetry selective resonant soft x-ray Raman scattering (RSXRS) experiments at the O (formula presented) edge excitation of (formula presented) Well below N?el temperature the initial state of (formula presented) is antiferromagnetic, and then the final state with the Zhang-Rice singlet is excited selectively when the photon polarization is conserved in the RSXRS process. We also observe a weak RSXRS structures around 0.5 eV in the controversial midinfrared region, taking advantage of extremely weak elastic scattering intensity in the O (formula presented) edge. Resonant X-ray emission spectrum (RXES) is calculated for the one-dimensional single-band Hubbard model. The origin of each inelastic scattering peak can be explained as some intra-band or inter-band electron-hole pair excitation processes. However, the intensity of each peak is remarkably influenced by the core-hole potential effect in the intermediate state. In other words, the incident photon energy dependence of each inelastic peak gives direct information on the electron-hole pair excitations involved. Detailed experiments at and near the resonant condition are highly desired in highly-correlated electron systems.

In order to investiaget the influence of Cu-Cu interaction on the Cu 2p core-level x-ray absorption spectrum of LaCuO3, the Lanczos calculations are performed for (Cu3O16)23- and (CuO16)29- cluster models. The Cu 2p XAS is calculated as a function of the charge-transfer energy (Δ) between the Cu 3d and O 2p states.With decreasing Δ, the spin state of the ground state changes from magnetic to nonmagnetic. Around the critical Δ, the main line of the XAS splits by about 1.5 eV, reproducing the experimental result of LaCuO3 well. In such low Δ cases, half the valence holes occupy the O 2p states, mediating the strong Cu-Cu coupling, and the photoabsorption at a particular Cu site inevitably affects the electronic states around the neighboring Cu sites, in contrast to divalent Cu compounds. This inter-site coupling is enhanced, when the tetragonal distortion of CuO6 units is small. In other owrds, the 3d orbital degeneracy is important in discussing the Cu 2p XAS of LaCuO3.The Cu 2p photoemission spectrum is also calculated.

A systematic investigation of 2p core-level X-ray photoemission spectra (2pXPS) of a series of transition metal (TM) sesquioxides M2O3 (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe) is reported. Theoretical analysis was carried out by means of an MO6 cluster model with the full multiplet structure of the M ion and the calculated results of the 2pXPS are in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, theoretical and experimental investigations of SpXPS, SsXPS, valence XPS and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectra (BIS) of Cr2O3 were also performed and all of these experimental data are satisfactorily reproduced with the cluster model approach. The character of the insulating energy gap of these M2O3 compounds was also studied based on the spectral analysis. It is shown that the M2O3 compounds from Ti2O3 to Mn2O3 are classified as intermediate-type insulators between charge transfer (CT) and Mott-Hubbard (MH) insulators, and Fe2O3 is classified as a CT insulator.

Intersite Coulomb interaction between Cu 3d and O 2p holes (Upd) is shown to be important in analyzing the optical conductivity and the Cu 2p core-level X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) of one-dimensional copper oxides such as Ca2CuO3 and Sr2CuO3 consistently. It is shown that the Cu 2p XPS is rather insensitive to Upd, while the optical gap is expanded by stronger Upd. With Upd around 2 eV, the superexchange coupling constant of Cu 3d spins is also reasonably reproduced. The influence on the Cu 2p XPS of the intersite Coulomb potential of the Cu 2p hole acting on the neighboring O 2p holes is also discussed.

(Formula presented) contains (Formula presented) planes separated by ionic SrCl block layers and can be regarded as a model substance for cuprates concerning many of their physical properties, in particular the dynamics of valence-band holes in a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background. We present and discuss core-level and valence-band photoemission data. The (Formula presented) photoelectron spectrum differs from the spectra of other cuprate compounds, in particular with regard to the parent cuprates of the high-(Formula presented) superconductors. The (Formula presented) main lines are comprised of more than two peaks with strong satellite emission which exhibits a distinct angular-dependent fine structure. We present calculations of a (Formula presented) cluster within the (Formula presented) model and discuss the features in the main line of the (Formula presented) photoemission spectrum in terms of the different screening channels available in (Formula presented) planes. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

We measure the Cu 2p X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) of Sr2CuO3 andanalyze it by means of exact diagonalization calculations for(CunO3n)4n- clusters.In Sr2CuO3, the intensity ratio of the 3d9 satellite to the 3d10 Lmain line is 0.35–0.4, which is evidently smaller than that in the otherhigh-T c related cuprates. We ascribe it as the smaller charge-transferenergy between the Cu 3d and O 2p.The origin of the broad main-line of Sr2CuO3 is also discussed.

The 4d → 2p x-ray emission spectra (XES) of rare-earth compounds are calculated with an impurity Anderson model with the full multiplet couplings, following the formula of a coherent second order optical process. Recent experiments are well reproduced with this model by using a constant value for the 4d core hole lifetime damping Γ(4d) in light rare-earth compounds. On the other hand, in heavy rare-earth compounds it is necessary to take into account the term dependence of Γ(4d). The 4f → 4d XES of Dy2O3 is also investigated theoretically. The multiplet term dependence of the 4d core hole lifetime affects more drastically the spectral shape in the 4f → 4d XES than in the 4d → 2p XES. Some theoretical predictions are also given on the coincidence spectra between the 4d-XPS and 4f → 4d XES.

The copper 2p core-level x-ray photoemission spectrum in CuO2 plane systems is calculated by means of large-cluster models to investigate in detail the nonlocal screening effects, which were pointed out by van Veenendaal et al. [Phys. Rev. B 47, 11462 (1993)]. Calculating the hole distributions for the initial and final states of photoemission, we show that the atomic coordination in a cluster strongly affects accessible final states. Accordingly, we point out that the interpretation for Cu3O10 given by van Veenendaal et al. is not always general. Moreover, it is shown that the spectrum can be remarkably affected by whether or not the O 2p(pi) orbits are taken into account in the calculations. We also introduce a Hartree-Fock approximation in order to treat much larger-cluster models.

We present the experimental and theoretical spectra for photoemission from the 2p- and 3s-core levels in CrF2. By consistently analyzing both spectra, we show that the covalency effect in CrF2 is fairly important, compared with MnF2 and FeF2. We have calculated the valence photoemission and bremsstrahlung isochromat spectra for TiO2, Ti2O3 and VO2 by means of an MO6 cluster model (M$=$Ti, V). The result shows that the first ionization state and the lowest affinity state have considerable O 2$p$ character because of the large hopping matrix element between Ti (V) 3$d$ and O 2$p$ orbitals. In particular, it is shown that the character of the energy gap in VO2 is charge-transfer type rather than Mott-Hubbard type.

The excitation spectrum of the L3M5 X-ray emission of Dy3+ system in the pre-edge region of Dy L3 XANES is theoretically investigated based upon a coherent second order optical formula with multiplet coupling effect. The spectral broadening of the excitation spectrum is determined by the M5, core hole lifetime, being free from the L3 core hole lifetime. The fine pre-edge structure of L3 edge due to L3N6,7 quadrupole transition can be seen in the excitation spectrum, while this structure is invisible in the conventional XANES. The conditions for the excitation spectrum to be regarded as the absorption spectrum with a smaller width are discussed.

We investigate theoretically Cu 2p-XES for La2CuO4 and CuO on the basis of the formula of the second order optical process with the impurity Anderson model. According to Cu 2p-XES experiments so far made, a shoulder structure appears on the high energy side of the main peak in La2CuO4 and also in high-T(c) superconductors, but it is absent in CuO. It is shown that the appearance of the shoulder structure originates from the stronger hybridization for the a1g symmetry states in La2CuO4 than in CuO due to the existence of the apical oxygen.

We analyze the polarization dependence of the Cu 2p-XAS and the Cu 2p-XPS observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-δ system. To take into account the nonequivalent Cu sites in YBa2Cu3O7, we use a model where the impurity Anderson model and a CuO4 cluster model are linked, where the former and the latter describe the CuO2 plane and the CuO chain, respectively, For YBa2Cu3O6.5, the CuO4 cluster is replaced by a CuO3 cluster. 0.5, the spectrum is obtained by a superposition of the spectra for δ=0 and 0.5. A theoretical prediction of polarization-dependent XPS in anisotropic solids is given, with Cu 2p- and 3p- XPS in La2CuO4 as an example. The XPS due to the dipole p → s transition is shown to exhibit an appreciable polarization dependence, which originates from the multiplet-coupling between the core hole and anisotropic Cu 3d electrons. The polarization-dependent 3p → εs process can be made to dominate an almost polarization-independent 3p → εd process by tuning the incident photon energy to the Cooper minimum of the 3p → εp transition at about 22eV above the threshold. © 1990.

In this study, we discuss the multiplet structure observed in the Cu 2p- and 3p-XPS in La2CuO4, CuO and Cu dihalides using the single-site Anderson model. We take into account the multiplet coupling between a Cu 3d hole and a core hole, and the anisotropic hybridization between the 3d hole and O 2p valence band holes. As a result, we show that the multiplet structure is strongly affected by the anisotropic hybridization. We discuss the local electronic structures around the Cu atom by analyzing the deviation of the core-level XPS in these materials from the XPS in free Cu2+ ion. © 1990.

The high-energy deep-core-level spectra of PrO2 have been studied. Pr 3d x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), Pr M4,5 x-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Pr L3 XAS show many-body effects. The data are analyzed in the framework of the filled-band Anderson-impurity model. Starting from the many-body description of the ground-state, the final states of each core-level spectroscopy are predicted. The effective relaxation energy in the final state decreases going from 3d XPS to L3 XAS to M4,5 XAS because of the repulsive interaction between the excited electron and the 4f electron in XAS spectra. It is shown that the ground state exhibits mixing of many-body configurations 4f1 and 4f2L, where L denotes a hole in the oxygen 2p-derived valence band, separated by the energy E=0.5 eV. A nonzero probability of the occupation of the 4f2L configuration, giving a noninteger 4f count nf=1.6, is found. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

The 4d-4f resonant photoemission spectra for Ce2O3 and γ-Ce are analyzed theoretically by using the impurity Anderson model. It is shown that the resonant photoemission can be analyzed consistently with the other photoemission and BIS spectra which were analyzed previously. The origin of heavy electrons is discussed on the basis of the periodic Anderson Hamiltonian. It is pointed out that the high density of states of f-electrons in the unperturbed state plays an essential role in giving the large enhancement of the T-linear electronic specific heat, while the large value of U itself is not so essential.

The Fermi liquid theory on the basis of the periodic Anderson Hamiltonian is extended to the case with orbital degeneracy. The general expressions for T-linear term of specific heat, spin and orbital susceptibilities and T^2-term of resistivity are derived. These results confirm that the general relations derived for the single orbital case hold also in the degenerate case, though they are given in matrix forms. For example, the T-2-term of resistivity is proportional to the square of the mass enhancement factor, when the Coulomb repulsion is large enough to suppress the charge fluctuation of f-electrons. Moreover, it is shown that f-orbital degeneracy suppresses the magnetic instability and the Fermi liquid theory can be applied to a larger value of U compared with the single orbital case.

Recent experimental data of 3d core photoemission spectrum (3d-XPS) and L3 photoabsorption spectrum (L3-XAS) in CeF4 are theoretically analyzed by using the impurity Anderson model with a filled valence band. Background contributions in these spectra are carefully taken into account. In order to give a consistent interpretation for 3d-XPS and L3-XAS, it is essentially important to take into account, in the final state of L3-XAS, the Coulomb interaction between 4f and 5d electrons, as well as that between a 5d electron and a core hole. The result of the analysis is compared with that for CeO2. © 1987.

The magnetization process in films of ferromagnetic superconductors is studied theoretically by concentrating mainly on the region near the lower critical field Hc1. Below a characteristic temperature, where the magnetic interaction energy plays an important role, the following are predicted: the unusual dependence of Hc1 on the film thickness, the discontinuity of the magnetization curve due to the change of the vortex lattice structure and the change of the transition type from II/1 to II/2 with decreasing the film thickness. The possibility of another type (II/3) of phase transition is also discussed. The mechanisms of these results are analyzed with particular attention to the roles of the interaction between each vortex and the magnetic field penetrating from the surface, the surface-affected intervortex interaction and the saturation effect of the magnetization which is mainly caused by the penetrating field. © 1986, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN. By using the electromagnetic excitation modes in ferromagnetic superconductors, which are the coupled modes of the photon, electric current and magnetic moments, the reflection and transmission coefficients, Rf and Tf, are calculated for the electromagnetic wave incident normally on the surface of a film of ferromagnetic superconductor. It is shown that Rf and Tf oscillate as a function of the film thickness, reflecting the oscillatory character of the excitation modes, and that Rf and Tf have an anomally at the magnetic phase transition temperature Ts. © 1985.

Near the surface of ferromagnetic superconductors, the free energy difference between the single vortex state and the no vortex state is calculated as a function of the distance between the vortex and the surface for various values of temperature T and external magnetic field H0. It is shown that the vortex is bound near the surface at T&lt
T0 under H0 higher than a critical value, where To is the characteristic temperature below which the external magnetic field penetrates into the crystal in an oscillatory fashion. The interaction between the vortex and the penetrating magnetic field plays an important role in the stability of the vortex near the surface.
