    The electronic structure of the lightly electron-doped correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr2IrO4 has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We have observed the coexistence of a lower Hubbard band and an in-gap band; the momentum dependence of the latter traces that of the band calculations without on-site Coulomb repulsion. The in-gap state remained anisotropically gapped in all observed momentum areas, forming a remnant Fermi-surface state, evolving towards the Fermi energy by carrier doping. These experimental results show a striking similarity with those observed in deeply underdoped cuprates, suggesting the common nature of the nodal liquid states observed in both compounds.

    A valence fluctuating phenomenon, which is one of the most interesting subjects in strongly correlated electron systems, has been studied theoretically in EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)(2), in which the field-induced valence transition from a nonmagnetic Eu3+ state (4f(6)) to a magnetic Eu2+ state (4f(7)($) under bar (1)) was observed at around 40 Tesla by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Eu L-edges. Here, c denotes a hole in a conduction band. Both XAS and XMCD in fields exhibit two peaks corresponding to the two valence states, although one of them is nonmagnetic. In this paper, we propose a model to explain the field-induced valence transition, in which the hybridization between the 4f(6) state and the 4f(7)(c) under bar (1) state plays an essential role. Comparing XAS and XMCD calculated with experimental data, we fi nd that XAS and XMCD provide us with detailed microscopic information on the mixed valence state through the polarized 5d electrons. Finally, we demonstrate how effective XAS and XMCD are for studying such mixed valence phenomena.

    Multi-Ru-site effects on the photoemission from the Ru 3d core level in Sr 2 RuO 4 are discussed on the basis of numerical diagonalization calculations for large-size cluster models. It is shown that the electrons on the Ru 4d ions neighboring the core-hole site participate actively in the core-hole screening, which indicates the importance of so-called "nonlocal screening" in Sr 2 RuO 4. However, since it occurs via the Ru 4d(xy)– O 2pπ bonding, the photoemission intensity which corresponds to the nonlocal screening is not large, compared with the Cu 2p photoemission in high-Tc-related cuprates. From the spectral analysis, the Coulomb interaction strength between Ru 4d electrons is estimated to be comparable with the width of Ru dε bands. In other words, Sr 2 RuO 4 belongs to a category of strongly correlated electron systems.

    Zhang-Rice singlet excitation around 2 eV is observed, distinguished from Cu (formula presented) excitations, by a symmetry selective resonant soft x-ray Raman scattering (RSXRS) experiments at the O (formula presented) edge excitation of (formula presented) Well below N?el temperature the initial state of (formula presented) is antiferromagnetic, and then the final state with the Zhang-Rice singlet is excited selectively when the photon polarization is conserved in the RSXRS process. We also observe a weak RSXRS structures around 0.5 eV in the controversial midinfrared region, taking advantage of extremely weak elastic scattering intensity in the O (formula presented) edge. From its polarization dependence, it is interpreted to originate mainly from the two-spin-flip excitations. ? 2002 The American Physical Society.

    We report on the results of angle-resolved photoemission experiments on a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) [Formula presented]-chain compound [Formula presented], which shows a gigantic nonlinear optical effect. A “band” having about 500 meV energy dispersion is found in the first half of the Brillouin zone, but disappears at [Formula presented]. These spectral features are well reproduced by the [Formula presented] chain model with a small charge-transfer energy [Formula presented] compared with that of 1D Cu-O compounds. We propose that this smaller [Formula presented] is the origin of the absence of clear spin-charge separation in the photoemission spectra and the strong nonlinear optical effect. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

    (Formula presented) contains (Formula presented) planes separated by ionic SrCl block layers and can be regarded as a model substance for cuprates concerning many of their physical properties, in particular the dynamics of valence-band holes in a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background. We present and discuss core-level and valence-band photoemission data. The (Formula presented) photoelectron spectrum differs from the spectra of other cuprate compounds, in particular with regard to the parent cuprates of the high-(Formula presented) superconductors. The (Formula presented) main lines are comprised of more than two peaks with strong satellite emission which exhibits a distinct angular-dependent fine structure. We present calculations of a (Formula presented) cluster within the (Formula presented) model and discuss the features in the main line of the (Formula presented) photoemission spectrum in terms of the different screening channels available in (Formula presented) planes. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

    Intersite Coulomb interaction between Cu 3d and O 2p holes (Upd) is shown to be important in analyzing the optical conductivity and the Cu 2p core-level X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) of one-dimensional copper oxides such as Ca2CuO3 and Sr2CuO3 consistently. It is shown that the Cu 2p XPS is rather insensitive to Upd, while the optical gap is expanded by stronger Upd. With Upd around 2 eV, the superexchange coupling constant of Cu 3d spins is also reasonably reproduced. The influence on the Cu 2p XPS of the intersite Coulomb potential of the Cu 2p hole acting on the neighboring O 2p holes is also discussed.

    The 4d → 2p x-ray emission spectra (XES) of rare-earth compounds are calculated with an impurity Anderson model with the full multiplet couplings, following the formula of a coherent second order optical process. Recent experiments are well reproduced with this model by using a constant value for the 4d core hole lifetime damping Γ(4d) in light rare-earth compounds. On the other hand, in heavy rare-earth compounds it is necessary to take into account the term dependence of Γ(4d). The 4f → 4d XES of Dy2O3 is also investigated theoretically. The multiplet term dependence of the 4d core hole lifetime affects more drastically the spectral shape in the 4f → 4d XES than in the 4d → 2p XES. Some theoretical predictions are also given on the coincidence spectra between the 4d-XPS and 4f → 4d XES.

    The copper 2p core-level x-ray photoemission spectrum in CuO2 plane systems is calculated by means of large-cluster models to investigate in detail the nonlocal screening effects, which were pointed out by van Veenendaal et al. [Phys. Rev. B 47, 11462 (1993)]. Calculating the hole distributions for the initial and final states of photoemission, we show that the atomic coordination in a cluster strongly affects accessible final states. Accordingly, we point out that the interpretation for Cu3O10 given by van Veenendaal et al. is not always general. Moreover, it is shown that the spectrum can be remarkably affected by whether or not the O 2p(pi) orbits are taken into account in the calculations. We also introduce a Hartree-Fock approximation in order to treat much larger-cluster models.

    The 4d→2p X-ray emission spectra (XES) of Ce2O3, Pr2O3 and Dy2O3 have been calculated with an impurity Anderson model with the full multiplet couplings, following the Kramers-Heisenberg formula in the second order optical process. Experimental results have been well reproduced with this model by using a constant value for the 4d core hole lifetime damping Γ (4d) in the case of Ce2O3 and Pr2O3, while in the case of Dy2O3 it is necessary to take into account the term dependence of Γ (4d), which is consistent with the previous theoretical analyses of 4d X-ray photoemission spectra. It was also shown that both the spin-orbit couplings of the 4d core level in the final state and the 4f level in the initial state are key factors to cause the branching ratio in the Lγ line larger than that in the Lβ line. The phase matching of the wave functions between the intermediate and final states smears out the hybridization effect in the 4d→2p XES in Ce2O3 and Pr2O3. © 1995, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN.     We present the experimental and theoretical spectra for photoemission from the 2p- and 3s-core levels in CrF2. By consistently analyzing both spectra, we show that the covalency effect in CrF2 is fairly important, compared with MnF2 and FeF2.     The excitation spectrum of the L3M5 X-ray emission of Dy3+ system in the pre-edge region of Dy L3 XANES is theoretically investigated based upon a coherent second order optical formula with multiplet coupling effect. The spectral broadening of the excitation spectrum is determined by the M5, core hole lifetime, being free from the L3 core hole lifetime. The fine pre-edge structure of L3 edge due to L3N6,7 quadrupole transition can be seen in the excitation spectrum, while this structure is invisible in the conventional XANES. The conditions for the excitation spectrum to be regarded as the absorption spectrum with a smaller width are discussed.

    We investigate theoretically Cu 2p-XES for La2CuO4 and CuO on the basis of the formula of the second order optical process with the impurity Anderson model. According to Cu 2p-XES experiments so far made, a shoulder structure appears on the high energy side of the main peak in La2CuO4 and also in high-T(c) superconductors, but it is absent in CuO. It is shown that the appearance of the shoulder structure originates from the stronger hybridization for the a1g symmetry states in La2CuO4 than in CuO due to the existence of the apical oxygen.

    We analyze the polarization dependence of the Cu 2p-XAS and the Cu 2p-XPS observed in the YBa2Cu3O7-δ system. To take into account the nonequivalent Cu sites in YBa2Cu3O7, we use a model where the impurity Anderson model and a CuO4 cluster model are linked, where the former and the latter describe the CuO2 plane and the CuO chain, respectively, For YBa2Cu3O6.5, the CuO4 cluster is replaced by a CuO3 cluster. For 0&lt
    δ&lt
    0.5, the spectrum is obtained by a superposition of the spectra for δ=0 and 0.5. Obtained results quantitatively reproduce the experimental results of Cu 2p-XAS, and the electron configuration of the ground state obtained from our spectral analysis suggests that extra holes will enter both the O sites in the CuO chains and the CuO2 layers.     A theoretical prediction of polarization-dependent XPS in anisotropic solids is given, with Cu 2p- and 3p- XPS in La2CuO4 as an example. The XPS due to the dipole p → s transition is shown to exhibit an appreciable polarization dependence, which originates from the multiplet-coupling between the core hole and anisotropic Cu 3d electrons. The polarization-dependent 3p → εs process can be made to dominate an almost polarization-independent 3p → εd process by tuning the incident photon energy to the Cooper minimum of the 3p → εp transition at about 22eV above the threshold. © 1990.

    In this study, we discuss the multiplet structure observed in the Cu 2p- and 3p-XPS in La2CuO4, CuO and Cu dihalides using the single-site Anderson model. We take into account the multiplet coupling between a Cu 3d hole and a core hole, and the anisotropic hybridization between the 3d hole and O 2p valence band holes. As a result, we show that the multiplet structure is strongly affected by the anisotropic hybridization. We discuss the local electronic structures around the Cu atom by analyzing the deviation of the core-level XPS in these materials from the XPS in free Cu2+ ion. © 1990.

    Detailed analysis of 4d core x-ray photoabsorption spectra (4d-XAS) in CeO2 is made with the impurity Anderson model by incorporating the solid-state effect of hybridization between 4f and valence-band states into the atomic calculation of multiplet structures. The hybridization effect plays an essential role in the multiplet structure observed in the prethreshold region of 4d-XAS. The effect of the finite width of the valence band, as well as that of the core-hole potential, is discussed. The multiplet structures in - and -Ce are also calculated for the sake of comparison. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

    We theoretically study X-ray emission spectra (XES) corresponding to the Cu 3d→2p electronic transition in high Tc superconductors by using the impurity Anderson model with five filled valence bands, and by applying a formula of a coherent sec-ond-order optical process.     We consistently analyze the Cu 2p-XPS, L3-XAS, 3d-XPS and resonant XPS in high-Tc superconducting materials, such as (La1-xSrx)2CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7-τ on the basis of the impurity Anderson model. We introduce five valence bands into the model to take account of the anisotropic nature of the Cu 3d orbitals and the different 2p energy levels for nonequi valent O sites. The key parameter values which characterize these Cu 3d and O 2p states are estimated from the analysis, and their trends are discussed. We study the effect of hole doping on the 2p-XPS and L3-XAS, especially on the polarization dependence of Z,3-XAS.     The 4d-4f resonant photoemission spectra for Ce2O3 and γ-Ce are analyzed theoretically by using the impurity Anderson model. It is shown that the resonant photoemission can be analyzed consistently with the other photoemission and BIS spectra which were analyzed previously. The difference in the resonance behavior between Ce2O3 and γ-Ce is ascribed to the difference in the mixing between f2 and f3 configurations in the intermediate state, as well as that between f0 and f1 configurations in the final state.     The high-energy deep-core-level spectra of PrO2 have been studied. Pr 3d x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), Pr M4,5 x-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Pr L3 XAS show many-body effects. The data are analyzed in the framework of the filled-band Anderson-impurity model. Starting from the many-body description of the ground-state, the final states of each core-level spectroscopy are predicted. The effective relaxation energy in the final state decreases going from 3d XPS to L3 XAS to M4,5 XAS because of the repulsive interaction between the excited electron and the 4f electron in XAS spectra. It is shown that the ground state exhibits mixing of many-body configurations 4f1 and 4f2L, where L denotes a hole in the oxygen 2p-derived valence band, separated by the energy E=0.5 eV. A nonzero probability of the occupation of the 4f2L configuration, giving a noninteger 4f count nf=1.6, is found. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

    Recent experimental data of 3d core photoemission spectrum (3d-XPS) and L3 photoabsorption spectrum (L3-XAS) in CeF4 are theoretically analyzed by using the impurity Anderson model with a filled valence band. Background contributions in these spectra are carefully taken into account. In order to give a consistent interpretation for 3d-XPS and L3-XAS, it is essentially important to take into account, in the final state of L3-XAS, the Coulomb interaction between 4f and 5d electrons, as well as that between a 5d electron and a core hole.   • Mixed States of Films of Ferromagnetic Superconductors

    The magnetization process in films of ferromagnetic superconductors is studied theoretically by concentrating mainly on the region near the lower critical field Hc1. Below a characteristic temperature, where the magnetic interaction energy plays an important role, the following are predicted: the unusual dependence of Hc1 on the film thickness, the discontinuity of the magnetization curve due to the change of the vortex lattice structure and the change of the transition type from II/1 to II/2 with decreasing the film thickness. The possibility of another type (II/3) of phase transition is also discussed. The mechanisms of these results are analyzed with particular attention to the roles of the interaction between each vortex and the magnetic field penetrating from the surface, the surface-affected intervortex interaction and the saturation effect of the magnetization which is mainly caused by the penetrating field. © 1986, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN.     By using the electromagnetic excitation modes in ferromagnetic superconductors, which are the coupled modes of the photon, electric current and magnetic moments, the reflection and transmission coefficients, Rf and Tf, are calculated for the electromagnetic wave incident normally on the surface of a film of ferromagnetic superconductor. It is shown that Rf and Tf oscillate as a function of the film thickness, reflecting the oscillatory character of the excitation modes, and that Rf and Tf have an anomally at the magnetic phase transition temperature Ts. © 1985.

    Near the surface of ferromagnetic superconductors, the free energy difference between the single vortex state and the no vortex state is calculated as a function of the distance between the vortex and the surface for various values of temperature T and external magnetic field H0. It is shown that the vortex is bound near the surface at T&lt
    T0 under H0 higher than a critical value, where To is the characteristic temperature below which the external magnetic field penetrates into the crystal in an oscillatory fashion. The interaction between the vortex and the penetrating magnetic field plays an important role in the stability of the vortex near the surface.     遷移金属化合物や希土類化合物は強相関物質(強相関電子系)と呼ばれます。3d遷移金属の3d電子系や希土類元素の4f電子系においては電子間相互作用が顕著であり,それらの電子の運動が互い強く相関し合います(強相関)。そのため,それらの物質の電気・磁気・光学的性質(物性)が強く電子相関に影響されています。強相関物質は機能性材料の候補となるものが多いため,世界中で多く研究者が新しい強相関物質の発見やその物性解明に取り組んでいます。
    これらの物質(電子系)にX線などの高エネルギーの光を照射して,その光学的性質を調べるのが高エネルギー分光法であり,その実験データを理論解析するのが本研究課題です。高エネルギー分光法は比較的新しい実験手法であることもあり,その実験データを解析する理論の開発は極めて重要です。
    本研究課題では,超伝導体や強誘電体,磁性体など,その時々に注目されている物質を研修対象とし,高エネルギー分光理論の開発を行うことを目的としています。
