    The erychrocyte sedimentation rate is a useful qualitative index in various clinical cases. As the mechanism of erythrocyte sedimentation is multifaceted, many experimen-tal and theoretical investigations have been done. Despite the large number of models developed in previous studies, no model has proven to be a comprehensive solution. In this paper a new aggregation and sedimentation model is proposed. The model utilizes underlying Stokes' equation that describes the sedimentation velocity of single rigid particle. It involves the use of some formulas obtained experimentally in previous investigations and describes a mechanism of erythrocyte sedimentation that consists of aggregation of erythrocytes, sedimentation of aggregates and packing of erythrocytes. The prediction of the erythrocyte sedimentation curve and sedimentation rate is made possible by inserting hematocrit, hemoglobin and some plasma protein concentration values into the equations of the model. A good agreement between the observed and predicted values was obtained.

    The effects of gas humidity on fluidization were studied by measuring torque for stirring in the gas-solid stirred fluidized bed. For particles fluidized smoothly, such as glass beads or CaCO3 particles of large diameter, the torque for stirring was little affected by gas humidity, while for polymer particles or CaCO3 particles of small diameter their fluidization were affected by gas humidity. The torque for stirring of CaCO3 increased with gas humidity because of the increase in adhesive force caused by adsorptive water on the particle surface. For polymer particles, the torque decreased with gas humidity because the electrostatic force originating from the surface charge of particles was inhibited by adsorptive water. However, with further increase of gas humidity the torque increased, because of the adhesive force due to adsorptive water. The shear stress of fluidizing or static particles on acrylic or steel pipe was measured and the effect of gas humidity on them was investigated. © 1989, The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan.     Mercury movement in incineration treatment of organic liquid waste at university was investigated. This experiment was carried out using organic liquid waste discharged from the laboratory into which definite mercury was added and the spray-incineration treatment facility at Okayama university. From mass balance most of mercury in flue gas was not trapped by the gas washer. This result showed the vapor-phase mercury treatment was indispensable to the flue gas treatment process.<BR>Lead-mercury substitution method was effective for vapor-phase mercury. And we estanblished the mercury removal process consisted of the 90cm diameter mercury treatment tower. Pumice upon which PbS was deposited were packed in this tower.<BR>Pressure drop in this process was smaller than in conventional activated carbon adsorption method. And the removal ratio of mercury for the flue gas in which the range of mercury concentration was 0.03-5mg/Nm3, were more than 90%. By this process, mercury concentration in flue gas from this treatment facility could keep below the standard value for working environment, 0.05mg/Nm3.

    The classification efficiency is considerably affected by the method of particle size measurement.<br>Here, the effect of particle size measurement on the assessment of classification efficiency was investigated numerically. For ideal classification, the assessment error by a standrad test sieve is affected by the cut size, the particle size distribution, and the opening progression. The error amounts to several dozen percent, and the error profiles are figured in the three dimensional classification efficiency chart.
