This study has investigated sensitivity of input parameters in stability analysis of earthen embankments to its factor of safety (F-s) using an experimental design approach. Computer experiments based on orthogonal designs were carried out to achieve efficient experiments, and a linear regression model was applied to analyze the results of the experiment. The Standardized Regression Coefficients (SRCs) obtained from the regression analysis was employed as indexes of the sensitivity of the input parameters to the F-s. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that the parameters about the geometry of embankments such as height and slope gradient are more sensitive to F-s, although the parameters about hydraulic characteristics of embankment materials are less sensitive to the F-s. In addition, interaction effects between input parameters were also analyzed, and its sensitivity to F-s was discussed.

This research deals with a strategy for the maintenance of geotechnical structures such as earth fill dams. Standard penetration test (SPT) N-values are frequently used to determine the soil parameters. Firstly, based on the statistical model for the N-values, the shear strength parameters are derived through the empirical relationships. Secondly, a reliability analysis of the embankments is conducted considering the variability of the internal friction angle and the seismic hazard. Thirdly, the probability of overflow of earth fills during heavy rains is evaluated. The rainfall intensity is dealt with as a probabilistic parameter, and the various rainfall patterns are tested by the Monte Carlo method.

The present paper addresses the numerical prediction of the behavior of a ground and a reservoir dyke with a retaining wall at the site of a regulating reservoir whose soft soil foundation is improved by using both the usual embankment preloading and vacuum consolidation. To evaluate the settlement, the lateral deformation, and the dissipation of pore pressure during Vacuum preloading, a numerical analysis using an elasto-plastic FEM for soil water coupled problems, incorporating the SYS Cam-clay model, is carried out in two dimensions. However, a change in the soil parameters during the vacuum preloading leads to a less accurate computation. To account for the uncertainties in the input parameters of the constitutive model for the improved ground, an inverse analysis approach is adopted. The particle filter is used to identify the compression index of the clay layers and the coefficient of permeability of the organic soil layer based on the measured settlement at the bottom of the preloading embankment during the vacuum consolidation. The reservoir dyke with a retaining wall is constructed on an improved foundation after removing the preloading embankment, and an attempt is made to predict its performance after construction by an elasto-plastic FEM for soil water coupled problems using the identified parameters. This study presents a reliability-based design method for geotechnical structures based on the observational method, which can be used as a methodology for the performance verification of geotechnical structures. In the proposed method, the soil-water coupled finite element analysis is utilized as a performance-verification method, and stochastic uncertainties inherent in the geotechnical parameters are evaluated by a Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed method can select the optimum design/construction method from several design alternatives, from the viewpoint of Life Cycle Cost, and the predictions at the initial design stage are sequentially updated by the particle filter. The proposed method is applied to a numerical example of the construction problem of embankment specified quantitative performance criteria, such as allowable settlements and the probability of their exceedance, and the feasibility of the method is examined in this example.

The development of stability problems related to classical mixed methods has recently been observed. In this study, a soil-water coupled boundary-value problem, one type of stability problem, is presented using the element-free Galerkin method (EFG method). In this soil-water coupled problem, anomalous behavior appears in the pressure field unless a stabilization technique is used. The remedy to such numerical instability has generally been to adopt a higher interpolation order for the displacements than for the pore pressure. As an alternative, however, an added stabilization term is incorporated into the equilibrium equation. The advantages of this stabilization procedure are as follows: (1) The interpolation order for the pore pressure is the same as that for the displacements. Therefore, the interpolation functions in the pore pressure field do not reduce the accuracy of the numerical results. (2) The stabilization term consists of first derivatives. The first derivatives of the interpolation functions for the EFG Method are smooth, and therefore, the solutions for pore pressure are accurate. In order to validate the above stabilization technique, some numerical results are given. It can be seen from the results that a good convergence is obtained with this stabilization term. The subgrade reaction coefficient of a foundation soil in an open pier has been identified using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based on measurements taken during in situ horizontal loading tests on a pile. For the in situ tests, the surface clay layer was removed, and the diluvial clay layer was replaced by a rubble mound to reduce the length of the pile above the surface of the foundation deposit. The tests were carried out for both the existing diluvial clay deposit and the replacement rubble mound for purposes of comparing the identified subgrade reaction coefficients in Euler-Bernoulli's beam equation with nonlinear springs. The measured deflection and the bending moment determined in the tests were used as input data for the inverse analysis. Analysis revealed that the identified subgrade reaction coefficient of the rubble mound is less than that of the diluvial clay under the same level of loading. The numerical results will provide useful information for the future design of open piers and their foundations. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
