Amines and ethers represent essential structural motifs in pharmaceuticals, natural products, organic materials, and catalytic systems. The development of novel, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective strategies for constructing C-N and C-O bonds is therefore of significant importance for the synthesis of these compounds. In recent years, carboxylic acids and their derivatives have emerged as attractive, inexpensive, non-toxic, and readily available synthetic building blocks, serving as promising alternatives to aryl halides. Growing evidence has demonstrated that decarboxylative amination and etherification of carboxylic acid derivatives offer a powerful approach for the synthesis of amines and ethers. These transformations proceed via three principal mechanistic pathways, each offering high atom economy. Specifically, carbanions (or organometallic species) generated through heterolytic decarboxylation can react with suitable electrophiles to form C-heteroatom bonds. In contrast, carbon-centred radicals produced through homolytic decarboxylation can couple with heteroatom-based reagents via radical recombination or oxidative trapping. Additionally, carbocations are typically formed via electrochemical oxidation of carboxylic acids: oxidative decarboxylation first yields a carbon radical, which is then further oxidized at the anode to generate a carbocation. This highly electrophilic intermediate can subsequently be intercepted by heteroatom nucleophiles to construct C-N or C-O bonds. This review highlights recent advances in the field, with a focus on transition metal catalysis, photoredox catalysis, and electrochemical methods for decarboxylative amination and etherification.

Two polymer donors, PATz3T-o6BO and PATz3T-o6HD, incorporating alkoxy-substituted anthra[1,2-c:5,6-c']bis([1,2,5]thiadiazole), were strategically designed and synthesized. The unique wavy backbone of these polymers effectively reduced aggregation, leading to enhanced solubility and significantly improved molecular ordering. Consequently, the PATz3T-o6HD:Y12-based solar cells achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.94%. These findings provide valuable insights into the molecular design of high-performance polymer donors for organic photovoltaics (OPVs).

Vinylene‐Bridged Alkoxyfluorobenzothiadiazole (<scp>FOBTzE</scp>)‐Based Semiconducting Polymers for Enhanced Performance in Non‐Fullerene Organic Photovoltaic Cells Reviewed

ABSTRACT

To mitigate the strong aggregation and limited solubility observed in the previously reported vinylene‐bridged alkoxyfluorobenzothiadiazole (FOBTzE)‐based polymer, PFOE4T, we designed and synthesized PBFOE‐1. This novel semiconducting polymer, based on the FOBTzE framework, incorporates an alkylthienyl‐substituted benzodithiophene (BDT) as the donor unit. PBFOE‐1 demonstrated broad and intense absorption between 300 and 700 nm with a relatively wide bandgap of 1.7 eV. Additionally, PBFOE‐1 features a low HOMO energy level (−5.43 eV) compared to PFOE4T (−5.23 eV), likely due to the incorporation of weakly electron‐donating BDT into the polymer backbone. While the PFOE4T/Y12‐based solar cell yielded a modest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.37%, characterized by a short‐circuit current density (J_sc) of 13.5 mA cm⁻², an open‐circuit voltage (V_oc) of 0.69 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.47, the PBFOE‐1/Y12 cell exhibited a substantially higher PCE of 10.96%. This improvement is reflected in the enhanced J_sc (23.23 mA cm⁻²), V_oc (0.84 V), and FF (0.56). The superior performance of PBFOE‐1 is primarily attributed to its improved solubility and aggregation behavior, promoting a more ordered face‐on orientation and optimal blend morphology.

Abstract

As a recently developed redox‐neutral coupling reaction, transition‐metal‐catalyzed unimolecular fragment coupling (UFC) has been extensively investigated over the past decade. In comparison to conventional cross‐coupling reactions, cross‐electrophilic coupling (XEC) and cross‐dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) protocols eliminate the need for stoichiometric organometallic reagents, reductants, or oxidants. Additionally, it produces only minimal molecular by‐products for the formation of a series of C−C bonds and C−X bonds with high atom efficiency. This review presents a summary and classification of the research progress made over the past decade in this field. The research is classified into four main categories, decarbonylation, decarboxylation, desulfonylation, and deisocyanation, according to the type of small molecule that is liberated from the reaction system. This facilitates the implementation of more practical, straightforward, and expedient reaction operations. It is noteworthy that the reaction employs carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives, etc.), sulfones, and amides, which are typically inexpensive and accessible, as reaction substrates. This groundbreaking synthetic approach has since yielded a plethora of outcomes and novel research avenues in related fields, while also offering benefits to other related fields.

The development of efficient synthetic methods of π-conjugated compounds by means of cross-coupling reactions are reported. Tetraarylethenes with four different substituents are synthetic targets. The Pt-catalyzed addition of diboron to alkynylsilanes to yield 1-aryl-1-silyl-2,2-diborylethenes with perfect stereoselectivity. Step by step chemoselective Suzuki-Miyaura couplings with aryl halides were performed to give a triarylsilylethene with perfect chemoselectivity. The silyl group was transformed to the aryl group with desilybromination, followed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, leading to the successful synthesis of the desired tetraarylated olefin. On the other hand, novel and versatile methods for the synthesis of various phenacene and thienophenacene derivatives by cross-coupling reactions were elucidated for application to organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). As one of representative phenacenes, picene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of five fused benzene rings with a W-shape structure, which exhibits high hole mobility. We successfully found the synthetic route of various substituted picenes. In addition, the synthesis of phenanthro [1,2-b : 8,7-b’] dithiophene (PDT) was achieved by replacing two terminal phenyl rings in picene with thiophene rings. The fabricated OFET devices based on C₁₂-PDT-2 displayed a quite high mobility of up to 5.6 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹. In regard to OPV devices, PDT-fluorinated benzothiadiazole (BT) polymers possessing alkyl side chains showed the highest power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 9.0%.

We report the design, synthesis, and physicochemical properties of an array of phenanthro[2,1-b:7,8-b’]dithiophene (PDT-2) derivatives by introducing five types of alkyl (CnH2n+1; n = 8, 10, 12, 13, and 14) or two types of decylthienyl groups at 2,7-positions of the PDT-2 core. Systematic investigation revealed that the alkyl length and the type of side chains have a great effect on the physicochemical properties. For alkylated PDT-2, the solubility was gradually decreased as the chain length was increased. For instance, C8-PDT-2 exhibited the highest solubility (5.0 g/L) in chloroform. Additionally, substitution with 5-decylthienyl groups showed poor solubility in both chloroform and toluene, whereas PDT-2 with 4-decylthienyl groups resulted in higher solubility. Furthermore, UV-vis absorption of PDT-2 derivatives substituted by decylthienyl groups showed a redshift, indicating the extension of their π-conjugation length. This work reveals that modification of the conjugated core by alkyl or decylthienyl side chains may be an efficient strategy by which to change the physicochemical properties, which might lead to the development of high-performance organic semiconductors.

To investigate organic field-effect transistor (OFET) properties, a new thienoacene-type molecule, 4,14-dihexyldinaphtho[2,3-d:2’,3’-d’]anthra[1,2-b:5,6-b’]dithiophene (C6-DNADT), consisting of π-conjugated nine aromatic rings and two hexyl chains along the longitudinal molecular axis has been successfully synthesized by sequential reactions, including Negishi coupling, epoxidation, and cycloaromatization. The fabricated OFET using thin films of C6-DNADT exhibited p-channel FET properties with field-effect mobilities (µ) of up to 2.6 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1, which is ca. three times lower than that of the parent DNADT molecule (8.5 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1). Although this result implies that the installation of relatively short alkyl chains into the DNADT core is not suitable for transistor application, the origins for the FET performance obtained in this work is fully discussed, based on theoretical calculations and solid-state structure of C6-DNADT by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses. The results obtained in this study disclose the effect of alkyl chains introduced onto the molecule on transistor characteristics.

Alkenylsilanols are prepared by the reaction of hexamethyltrisiloxane (D₃) with alkenyllithiums or alternatively by the reaction of cyclic siloxanes substituted by an alkenyl group with organolithiums and transformed to the corresponding cyclopropylsilanols using diiodomethane and diethylzinc. Lithium alkenylsilanolates, primary products of the preparation, also undergo cyclopropanation. As in the case of allylic alcohols, the silanol functionality is found to enhance the rate of cyclopropanation compared with that of alkenyltrialkylsilane or alkoxydialkylsilane. The obtained cyclopropylsilanols are further converted into the corresponding cyclopropanols by the Tamao oxidation.

Alkynylsilanes reacted with aryl or alkenyl triflates in the presence of 5 mol% of Pd(PPh₃)₄ and 10 mol% of CuCl in DMF to give the corresponding cross-coupling, namely "sila"-Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling, products in good to excellent yields. The present reaction is highly effective for one-pot synthesis of unsymmetrical diarylacetylenes.
