Although concrete framed structures are widely used with masonry infills, the contribution of masonry infills in structural design is limited to their dead loads only. Therefore, the full-fledged stiffness characteristics of masonry infill are not often considered. However, recent earthquakes showed the impact of masonry infill on the lateral behavior of surrounding RC frames. Moreover, sometimes existing masonry infills are strengthened using Ferrocement (FC), Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM), Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), etc., which might also have a similar impact on surrounding RC frames. The impact includes enhanced shear demand, damage, etc. However, the effect of the enhanced shear demand on RC columns is a relatively less investigated issue. In this context, an experimental program was designed to compare the effect of non-strengthened and FC strengthened masonry infill on the behavior of the surrounding RC frame in terms of lateral strength, hinge formation, shear demand enhancement, and damage to columns. The test specimens, including a bare RC frame, a masonry infilled RC frame, and a FC strengthened masonry infilled RC frame, were subjected to a quasi-static cyclic lateral loads. The experimental result showed that the masonry infill and FC strengthened masonry infill increased lateral strength, on average, by 81% and 244%, respectively, when compared to that of the bare RC frame. Meanwhile, FC strengthening of masonry infill improved the lateral strength, on average, by 90% when compared with the masonry infilled RC frame’s lateral strength. In this study, low-strength masonry infill caused the formation of a short column on the tension column of the RC frame. The application of ferrocement to low-strength masonry altered the position of the plastic hinge formed on the tension column of the RC frame when compared to that of the masonry infilled RC frame. Therefore, ferrocement strengthening of masonry eliminated the short column phenomenon in this particular study. Nevertheless, the shear demand (in terms of strain on the column tie) enhancement of the tension column was not substantial due to the ferrocement strengthening of the masonry infill when compared to that of the masonry infilled RC frame. Moreover, the damage concentration on RC columns (i.e., residual crack width) after insertion of masonry infill and ferrocement strengthened masonry infill changed to a smaller extent when compared to the bare RC frame damages, where the residual crack widths were within 1.0 ~ 2.0 mm.

Many of the buildings which experienced damage in recent earthquakes such as the 2015 Nepal Earthquake were reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infill walls. This study proposes a simplified procedure to estimate the in-plane seismic capacity of masonry infilled RC frame buildings based on concepts of the Japanese seismic evaluation standard (JBDPA, [1]). The correlation of seismic capacity and observed damage obtained using a database of 370 existing RC frame buildings with masonry infill that experienced earthquakes in Taiwan, Ecuador and Nepal is investigated. The Is index, which represents the seismic capacity of buildings in the Japanese standard, showed good correlation with the observed damage and proved to be effective as a simple method to estimate seismic capacity. The method was then applied to 103 existing buildings in Bangladesh that have not experienced a major earthquake recently. The results emphasize the necessity for urgent seismic evaluation and retrofitting of buildings in Bangladesh.

This study investigated the in-plane seismic capacity of three ½ scale single story reinforced concrete frames with masonry infill that were subjected to static cyclic lateral loading. Three main parameters were investigated: the strength of the surrounding reinforced concrete (RC) columns, strength of RC beams, and mortar strength of the masonry infill. These parameters were selected because there are large variations between the design codes and past research on their importance. Experimental results showed that the infill shear strength greatly increased with the surrounding frame strength. The investigated parameters did not significantly affect the initial stiffness. The specimen consisting of a masonry panel built with low-strength mortar showed relatively greater ductility and relatively less damage to the masonry infill panel and surrounding frame. Based on the results, the frame strength ratio needs to be included as a parameter in the design codes for new buildings because it can alter the shear strength of the masonry infill and ductility of the whole structure.

Damage level classification is essential just after a damaging earthquake for decision of appropriate and necessary action in order to prevent from repeated damage due to after-shocks and future major earthquake, and to support well-organized recovery. Therefore, accurate and practical post-earthquake damage evaluation method has been studied and developed in Japan. This paper overviews state-of-the-art of post-earthquake damage and residual seismic capacity for reinforced concrete buildings in Japan. Japanese Damage Evaluation Guideline was originally issued in 1990 and revised in 2000 and 2015. Evaluation of residual seismic capacity of whole building was introduced in the 2000 revision, in which deterioration of each structural component is evaluated based on damage level considering residual crack, crush of concrete and so on. Total collapse mechanism and damage in non-structural concrete wall were taken into the scope in the 2015 revision. Recently, residual seismic capacity evalua-tion based on response spectrum method is studied by authors. Basic concept of these method and application example are presented.

The ratio of frame strength and stiffness to masonry infill are major parameters that influence the seismic capacity of masonry infill. The influence of such parameters to seismic capacity in terms of strength, stiffness and deformation has significant variations between different design codes and past literature on the topic. This study focused on the in-plane behaviour of unreinforced masonry infill walls installed in reinforced concrete (RC) frames with different strengths. In the first part of this study, two ½ scale specimens with different RC frames and identical masonry infill walls were tested using a static cyclic loading protocol. The main objective was investigating the influence of changing frame strength to seismic capacity in terms of: strength, stiffness and deformation. Results of the presented experiment showed that as the ratio of frame shear strength to masonry shear strength increased, there was great improvement of the masonry infill walls in terms of strength and avoidance of sudden brittle behaviour of the masonry infill. However, varying frame strength did not significantly influence the initial stiffness and story drift at maximum strength. In the second part of this study, an investigation was conducted on the deformation limits of masonry infilled RC frames and the influence of various parameters, based on data collected from many recent experimental tests. Based on these experimental results, the deformation limits of masonry infill were found to be directly proportional to both the compressive prism strength of the masonry infill and the ratio of shear strength of frame to that of the masonry infill. The influence of aspect ratio showed large variation and it is difficult to conclude its level of influence on deformation. A simplified procedure based on experimental data was proposed that can estimate the backbone curve and gave good estimation of the post-peak lateral strength degradation slope based on the ratio of frame strength with simple hand calculation. Such a method is useful in the preliminary design process to help practicing engineers understand the general behaviour expected by infilled RC frames.

The Faculty of Architecture and Engineering Building at Tohoku University survived two strong ground motions. This is not surprising because the structure was stiff and strong. What is surprising is that the first ground motion did not cause severe structural damage but the second one caused so much structural damage that the building had to be evacuated and demolished. The damage occurred despite two key facts: (1) the intensities of the mentioned ground motions are understood to have been similar and (2) the building was strengthened after the first motion (and before the second) following stringent standards.

This paper presented the investigation of reinforced concrete building structures by 2011 East Japan Earthquake. Generally, reinforced concrete structures in Miyagi region performed very well during the earthquake and effect of seismic retrofit was found in mitigation of damage, although severe damage to some seismically retrofitted buildings was noticed. A good correlation was observed between calculated seismic capacity Is-index and observed damage. Moreover, buildings designed according to the current seismic design code had minor damage in its structural members. However, major damage to non structural elements was commonly observed. Some typical damage observed by author's field survey in Miyagi pref. which is conducted mainly as an activity of the AIJ committee is described. Damage to structural members was not found in most of RC buildings which suffered tsunami, although damage to non structural elements was generally severe. However, severe structural damage induced by devastating tsunami was observed in some buildings. © ASCE 2012.

Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings with Unreinforced masonry walls (URM) have suffered severe damage repeatedly in recent earthquakes such as the 2009 L'Aquila Earthquake in Italy, the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and many people died in those earthquakes. This research developed low-cost retrofitting method called Ferrocement for improving seismic capacity of masonry walls. The research first conducted experiments of 1/2 scaled specimens using the retrofit method of ferrocement. The experiments results showed that the developed retrofit method of ferrocement could improve the strength of masonry walls. The experiment also showed that there are several failure modes of the developed method with different seismic performances. Thus, several evaluation methods were proposed for each failure mode of the developed retrofit schemed and design procedures were proposed. The outcome could be used by engineers to apply existing buildings with masonry walls to improve seismic capacity.
