    This study focuses on grain motion in TZP (Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal) ceramics during superplastic deformation. The zigzag motion of grains was found in experimental data and analyzed statistically based on Brownian motion. At the beginning of deformation, constraint by surrounding grains is widely distributed, however, it becomes spatially uniform after 15% true plastic strain.

    Photon emission (phE) during fracture was investigated on glass-like carbon, pyrolytic graphite, polycrystalline graphite, and carbon fiber reinforced composites (C/C composites). The C/C composites were heat treated at 1000, 1500, and 2000 degrees C. The specimen was fractured by three-point bending and the resulting phE was measured at atmospheric pressure, 10(-3) and 10(-6) Pa. The phE was not observed on any samples at atmospheric pressure, whereas it occurred on the glass-like carbon and C/C composites at 10(-3) and 10(-6) Pa. The phE intensity at 10(-3) Pa was higher than that at 10(-6) Pa. This study revealed that the phE on the carbon materials depended on their crystal structure and surrounding gas pressure. The gas pressure dependence suggests that the phE resulted from gas discharge.

    To demonstrate availability of gamma distribution as the initial distribution of flaw size, three kinds of initial flaw size data of alumina ceramics were employed. Compared with a power function, gamma distribution was better fit to the data in every case. For practical use, an approximate expression of the initial distribution of flaw size was proposed by taking out a major part of the gamma distribution relating to the shape parameter.     Photon emission (phE) often accompanies fracture of ceramics. The author has studied the phE for engineering ceramics and glasses to clarify its emission mechanisms. This paper reviews the recent studies to describe several factors contributing to the phE and to discuss phE mechanisms. Recently, it has been found that the phE is affected by surrounding gas, bending strength and fracture mode. The phE intensity depends on both of kind and pressure of surrounding gas. The dependence demonstrates that discharge of the gas is one of the origins of the phE. The positive correlation between bending strength and the phE intensity is observed for glass and single crystal ceramics, showing that the phE is associated with released energy by fracture. In polycrystalline ceramics, the phE intensity does not depend clearly on bending strength but on the proportion of transgranular fracture. This indicates that grain boundary has a large effect on the phE. (C) 2009 The Ceramic Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

    Mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics and HAp/beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) composites were measured at room temperature and at 1100 degrees C to investigate influence of the beta-TCP dispersion. HAp powder was synthesized by precipitation method, and the ceramics and its composites were obtained by sintering the powder. The HAp/30%beta-TCP exhibited the best contribution to mechanical properties in this study. The compression test at 1100 degrees C showed that the beta-TCP dispersion reduced yield stress and work hardening of the HAp ceramics. Moreover, it was found that the composites were largely deformed without the change in grain shape and grain size.     The mechanical properties of Pt monatomic chains were investigated by a simultaneous measurement of effective stiffness and conductance using our recently developed mechanically controllable break junction technique with a tuning fork as a force sensor. When stretching a monatomic contact (two-atom chain), the stiffness and conductance increases at the early stage of stretching and then decreases just before breaking, which is attributed to a transition of the chain configuration and bond weakening. A statistical analysis was made to investigate the mechanical properties of monatomic chains. The average stiffness shows minima at the peak positions of the length histogram. From this result, we conclude that the peaks in the length histogram are a measure of the number of atoms in the chains and that the chains break from a strained state. Additionally, we find that the smaller the initial stiffness of the chain is, the longer the chain becomes. This shows that softer chains can be stretched longer.

    Accumulation of damage by cyclic loading-unloading under uni-axial compressive stress was evaluated using ultrasonic method for two kinds of refractories: alumina/graphite (AG) and isotropic graphite (IG) refractories. Change of relative degradation in apparent sonic velocity V-RD was used for a barometer on damage evaluation of IG and AG refractories. Measurement of change in V-RD actualizes in-situ evaluation of damage during loading-unloading processes. Difference of change in V-RD during loading-unloading processes was observed between both specimens, which suggested the damage mechanism is different in IG and AG. Accumulation of damage for AG specimens by cyclic loading-unloading was very little, while it is a little larger for IG specimens. An increase in applied stress ratio R contributed to an increase in degree of damage accumulation. To explain the damage mechanism for both AG and IG specimens, we consider damage models, respectively. In these models, loading-unloading processes were classified into 4 steps based on the behavior of change in V-RD, and damage of the two kinds of specimens was explained by relating to crack nucleation and crack opening-closing mechanism in each step.

    Photoinduced microstructural changes in transparent anatase thin films with large-grain polycrystallites (-200 nm) were evaluated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Films were subjected to a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pretreatment before heating at 500 degrees C. Photoinduced wettability of the films was subsequently confirmed. Upon UV illumination, the surface image became blurred with an apparent increased surface roughness. The image sharpened gradually as the surface returned to its initial state.     Photoinduced microstructural changes in transparent anatase thin films with large-grain polycrystallites (-200 nm) were evaluated using atomic force microscopy (AFM).     these domains (several micrometer in size) moved in the sea of randomly moving grains
    however, these domains were soon constrained by the surrounding sea and disappeared
    subsequently, new domains were formed in other places by re-combination of grains in order to continue superplastic deformation. Based on these phenomena, the authors proposed a new deformation mechanism called "Recombinant Domain Movement" in this paper. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The photon emission accompanying fracture of a polycrystal line MgO was investigated at room temperature under N-2 gas pressures from 10(-4) to 10(5) Pa. At fracture, the ultraviolet, visible and infrared photon emissions instantaneously increased, and then rapidly decreased in most of the experimental conditions. However, in a N-2 gas pressure of around 100 Pa, their peak counts lasted for about 10 milliseconds, and the amount of the UV photon emission was fifteen times larger than those obtained in the other N-2 gas pressures. This abrupt increment in the emission was explained by the luminescence due to N-2 gas discharge according to the classical Townsend's theory. In conclusion, the photon emission accompanying fracture of a polycrystalline MgO mainly originated from the excited defects as reported by the authors previously, but the N-2 gas discharge had a supplementary effect on the emission around a specific N-2 gas pressure.

    The electronic structures of a clean Al (001) surface, of a stepped Al (001) surface, and of an Al(001) surface with vacancies were investigated by the first-principles calculation to elucidate the emission mechanism of field-stimulated exoelectrons from Al tip surfaces. The results show that vacancies at the Al (001) surface slightly increase local density of states (LDOS) in the occupied states, and that monoatomic steps significantly increase LDOS at 0.36 eV above Fermi level in the unoccupied states. The LDOS peak position in the unoccupied states at the stepped surface is close to the trap level of field-stimulated exoelectrons measured in our previous experiments, and it is concluded that the monoatomic steps at Al surfaces can play a role of exoelectron traps.

    The spatial distribution of the field-stimulated exoemission (FSEE) from the W tip surface annealed at 800 K for 600 s and the atomic arrangement of the emitting surface were correlated using field ion microscopy (FIM) and field emission microscopy. The FSEE was observed at around the (111) plane of the annealed W tip surface. FIM observation of the annealed W tip revealed the existence of a pyramid-like protrusion at the W(111) surface. From these experimental results, a new emission model of the FSEE was proposed relating to the field-assisted surface structural change. This model deals with the buildup/collapse of the pyramid-like protrusion at the W(111) surface under the effect of negative high electric field.
