    In large-scale engineering plants like nuclear power plants, various anomalies and accidents are usually predicted and efficient measures to minimize the damage from them have been implemented. However, when an unexpected anomaly or accident occurs, operators are asked to take flexible responsive actions to avoid its development to a catastrophic situation and to minimize the influence and damage by the accident. Considering the lessons learned from Fukushima Daiichi accidents, it is important to develop a system to support counter activities by operators and plant staff in an accidental plant condition that is not covered by emergency operating procedures prepared. The purpose of this study is to develop a technique for generating plausible operation procedures under such unexpected emergency situations. The multilevel flow modeling (MFM), a method to represent the functions of components and their relations, is applied as a framework to model functions of components. The technique uses some additional data and knowledge for deriving operation procedures. The applicability of the technique is confirmed by trial operation procedure generations for pressurized water reactor (PWR) loss-of-coolant accident cases with the conditions of some failures of safety systems.

    This study analyzes the factors for detecting agents to implement a human-like agent in werewolf games, which are new themes in game studies of artificial intelligence. A comparative experiment was conducted to reveal the influences regarding the degree of disclosure of the agent existence; seven players and an agent participated in four games. Communication logs were collected from the game logs. Impressions for each player was reported in questionnaires with five-point scales and detection of the agent were reported in a free writing. Although the most players, who did not know that an agent played the games, did not be aware of the true character of the agent, the most players who knew the existence could detect the agent. The statements of detected agents differed from them of other players. This study concludes that the technical requirement for agents is to adapt to statements of other players.

    This paper describes a new method for driving electromagnetic type spherical motors that has arranged permanent magnets on a rotor and arranged electromagnets on a stator. The most significant feature of this method is, in principle, applicable to any permanent magnets arrangement and electromagnets arrangement, and it can generate torque to any direction from any rotor attitude. In the spherical motor, cogging torque between permanent magnets and electromagnets causes not only instability of rotation but also causes rotor attitude error because the rotor has three degrees of freedom. The method of canceling the cogging torque is introduced. In the case of arranging four or more electromagnets, the combination of the electric current supply becomes infinite in number and generally not determined uniquely. However, we have developed a method for deciding the electric current distribution that generates maximum torque under the limited supply of each electromagnet. In the experiment of open-loop control, it was confirmed that the rotor was able to rotate about the axes that had been set by the calculation.

    In recent years, the number of younger operators increases in the Japanese industrial plants because of the alternation of generations. The operation manual becomes more important for the safe and stable operations. We analyzed the reported trouble cases happened in the petroleum and nuclear industries due to the problems of operation manuals. The analyses revealed that most of the trouble cases were caused by insufficient information in the part of remarks in operation manuals. This study investigates experimentally the influence of insufficient information in the part of remarks in operation manuals on the performance of novice plant operators using a semi-scale boiler type power generation plant. Two types of operation manuals are prepared for the experiment. The first one is the set of original operation manuals. That is, this type includes all information described in the original operation manuals. The other type of operation manuals has some missing information in the part. The experimental results show that the usage of the operation manuals describing all information has much effect to decrease the operation risk and the rate of omitting operation actions although the operation time to complete the task becomes longer. The sufficient description of the information has little effect on the understanding of operations.

    Operation manuals are used to support plant operators in order to reduce human errors and to ensure the quality of operation independent on the skill of operators. However, there are some troubles happened by the causes of problems in operation manuals. The authors analyzed the reported trouble cases happened in petroleum and nuclear industries due to the problems in operation manuals. The analyses revealed that most of the trouble cases were caused by insufficient information in the part of remarks in operation manuals. This means that novice operators need some more information in addition to that of operation purpose and goal, operation step names, the order of operation steps, and concrete operation actions. This study investigates experimentally the influence of insufficient information in the part of remarks on the performance of novice plant operators using an artificial and semi-scaled boiler type power generating plant. Several categories of information described in the part of remarks are identified. Then, two types of operation manuals are prepared. The one describes all information in the part of remarks.     Operating procedures are guidance for operators to monitor, make decision and take related actions in normal, abnormal and emergency condition of nuclear power plants. The initial form of operating procedures, paper based procedures (PBP), have some drawbacks such as high operators' workload and necessity of much time to find and execute procedures related to the events. Therefore, computer based procedures (CBP) were developed to overcome the problems. However, some operators are not familiar with the CBP and may refuse to use the CBP because they used to use the PBP without any problems. This research investigates some features to the CBP to make it easier for operator to use and execute procedures and reducing human error. The proposed features are providing functional information of the procedures steps and related components using multilevel flow modeling (MFM), displaying remaining time for operators to complete each step or group of steps and implementing dynamic operation permission to reduce commission error by operators.     This study explores the influence of electronic clinical pathways (ECPs) on nurses' daily activities, especially nursing communication, in a university hospital. Although an electronic clinical pathway enables medical-treatment processes to be standardized by interacting with different occupations, few studies have been conducted from the managerial perspective. We interviewed a doctor in the Department of Medical Information Systems and eight nurses who make entries and use ECPs. The results of the interview indicated that some nurses learned about the medical processes using electronic clinical pathways. The results also showed that the assessment abilities for patient care could decline, if the nurses failed to incorporate the electronic clinical pathways into their daily routines.

    This paper describes the development of a spherical motor, hereinafter called “14-12 spherical motor.” This sphericalmotor utilizes two polyhedrons – a truncated regular octahedron and a regular dodecahedron – for the arrangement of permanent magnets on the rotor and electro-magnets on the stator.     This article discusses the potential of Captology, a concept of the persuasive technologies, for long-term rehabilitation. Continuous rehabilitations to patients with chronic regional pain syndrome are an essential way to ameliorate the pain. Although the effects on a patient diminish when suspending the rehabilitation, he/she often feels resigned to keep it. Interference factors against the rehabilitation consist of difficulties to recognize the effects from the rehabilitation, interminable and repetitive rehabilitation, and complicated processes involving data collection for providing quality amelioration. Captology is one of promising concepts to solve these problems. We developed a set of functions with four principles from Captology, that is, Praise, Reduction, Tunneling and Self-Monitoring, into the system named VR/MVF for the sake of maintaining patient’s motivation. One of the significant functions was developed to apply the principle of Praise. The system displays messages of praising/scolding to notice appropriate/ inappropriate behaviors to him/her. The principles of Reduction and Tunneling were applied to reduce the burden of the system use. Tracking medical records by the principle of Self-Monitoring was employed to indicate the effects of rehabilitation to the patient.

    We propose a method that corrects effects of refractions and absorptions for underwater scan data obtained by general-purpose laser range finders (LRFs) using HOKUYO UTM-30LX (Top-URG). For measurements by LRFs in water, it is known that refractions make measurement distances longer and absorptions make reflection intensities weaker. In order to confirm those characteristics of measurements in water, we first conduct two basic experiments that Top-URG measures a target in the environment with the assumed turbid deep-sea and evaluate an accuracy and a performance of Top-URG in water. The first basic experiment is that Top-URG measures surroundings in a sink filled with water by changing the turbidity of the water. The second basic experiment is conducted by changing a location and an angle of a target. Next, we develop a method that (1) corrects scan data of Top-URG by considering a refractive index of water and (2) eliminates scan data with low reliabilities based on reflection intensities obtained by Top-URG using automatically calculated thresholds. We evaluate those two methods by using two types of target objects and seven situations. Our developed methods can correct distorted scan points by refractions in water and can eliminate ghost scan points which are not existent. We confirm that their performances for underwater scan data are effective enough to use Top-URG in water.

    It is very important to detect and identify small anomalies and component failures for the safe operation of complex and large-scale artifacts such as nuclear power plants. Each diagnostic technique has its own advantages and limitations. These facts inspire us not only to enhance the capability of diagnostic techniques but also to integrate the results of diagnostic subsystems in order to obtain more accurate diagnostic results. The article describes the outline of four diagnostic techniques developed for the condition monitoring of the fast breeder reactor "Monju". The techniques are (1) estimation technique of important state variables based on a physical model of the component, (2) a state identification technique by non-linear discrimination fimction applying SVM (Support Vector Machine), (3) a diagnostic technique applying WT (Wavelet Transformation) to detect changes in the characteristics of measurement signals, and (4) a state identification technique effectively using past cases. In addition, a hybrid diagnostic system in which a final diagnostic result is given by integrating the results from subsystems is introduced, where two sets of values called confidence values and trust values are used. A technique to determine the trust value is investigated under the condition that the confidence value is determined by each subsystem.

    Up to now, few studies have been devoted to investigate all the steps from the creation to the application of operation manuals and to consider human factors of operators in order to prevent the troubles caused by the problems of operation manuals. This paper deals with the steps and the human factors. It this study, the troubles caused by the problems are examined and the causes of these troubles are investigated. Here, the general procedure for creating an operation manual from the experiences of authors to create some operation manuals is first summarized and the method of analyzing the tendency of troubles and their causes is considered. From this consideration, it is concluded that there are several steps that cause a trouble in the creation of operation manuals and it is necessary to analyze the causes of a trouble from the viewpoints of creators and operators of operation manuals. Next, in this study, the troubles reported in Nuclear Information Archives (NUCIA) as an example of real trouble data bases are analyzed, a list of trouble causes related to the problems of operation manuals is made, and using this list, the causes of troubles reported in NUCIA are categorized. From analysis results, it is concluded that there are some steps that cause troubles in creating operation manuals, that the creation of a checklist and the description of necessary information are sometimes missing, and that operators take operations following operation manuals but sometimes do not understand the contents of operation manuals and/or have little knowledge for operations. © 2012 Atomic Energy Society of Japan All Rights Reserved.

    This study applies the spherical stepping motor the authors developed to the driving device of a stirrer and develops a proto-type stirrer. The developed stirrer is composed of a rotor, a stator, a control PC, an electric-magnet excitation circuit, and a power supply. The rotor is composed of double spherical shell in order to contain liquid in its inner spherical shell. Totally 91 permanent magnets are arranged in the rotor. On the other hand, 80 electro-magnets are arranged on the stator. The applicability of the stirrer to material production is evaluated by stirring experiments.

    Spherical motors have an advantageous feature that they can rotate around multiple axes. From the advantage, spherical motors are expected to be applied to driving mechanisms of holonomic mobile robots, joints of robots, and so on. This study develops a spherical motor called 14-12 spherical stepping motor that can rotate around 6 axes. This paper describes the structure of the motor, rotation principle by five-phase ACs (Alternative Currents), a five-phase AC power supply, and rotation experiments to confirm the applicability of the motor.

    Spherical motors have been studied widely because they have several advantageous features and are applicable to driving mechanisms of holonomic mobile robots, joints of robots, and so on. This study develops a 14-12 spherical motor and evaluates cogging torque and rotation torque for the rotation around one of two kinds of rotation axes. This paper describes the structure of the developed 14-12 spherical motor, working principle of rotation by five-phase alternative current (AC), and some evaluation results of rotation performance. The evaluation results of rotation torque exhibit the applicability of the 14-12 spherical motor. © 2012 IEEE.

    Currently, various rescue robots are developed to use them at a disaster site. It is suggested that legged-robots are useful on uneven and fragile terrain because a legged-robot can choose a grounding point discretely. In the previous study, leg-grope movement was proposed for a quadruped robot walking on fragile terrain. However, the walking experiment by using the leg-grope movement was carried out only for one cycle of walking gait, and the possibility of continuous walk that using the leg-grope movement has not analyzed yet. In this paper, we studied whether the leg-grope movement can be carried out continuously or not. As a result, we found the region for the leg-grope movement will never extend in future steps. Therefore, once the region for the leg-grope movement becomes small, the region cannot recover its groping area. The proposed leg-grope movement has to satisfy severe condition for a quadruped robot to walk continuously. © 2011 IEEE.

    It is necessary for rescue workers to understand the internal environment of a damaged building. A laser scanner mounted on a rotating platform on a mobile robot is commonly used for acquiring the 3D information of the building. In this study, a stereoscopic presentation system that displays 3D scan data is constructed in order to improve the cognitive ability of an operator who teleoperates the robot. Two types of experiments that an end user evaluates the constructed system are conducted and the experimental results show a good tendency to use the stereoscopic presentation. © 2011 IEEE.

    A snake robot would be applied to a machine that goes into a narrow space to investigate the inside of a structure. Recently, multiple locomotion modes of snake robots have been realized. In the previous study, we also achieved some kind of locomotion modes such as undulatory locomotion mode, sidewinding locomotion mode, lateral rolling locomotion mode and helical rolling locomotion mode to move along a pipe. The shape of the robot in each locomotion mode is calculated by using mathematical continuum curve model respectively. However, it is necessary to change these shape smoothly when the environment where the snake robot is moving changes. It is relatively easy to achieve this in the case that the snake robot moves along its body, namely it moves to a tangential direction, by using the traditional shift control. In this paper, we propose a s-shift control and a v-shift control for a snake robot moving vertical direction to its body. In this paper, the v-shift control is installed to an experimental snake robot and the locomotion performance of robot is evaluated for the pipe composed of a straight pipe and an elbow pipe. As a result, the snake robot could successfully changes its locomotion mode to move the inside of the pipes with two types of helical rolling motion. © 2011 IEEE.

    This study develops a mixing machine driven by a spherical motor that can rotate around any axis. The developed mixing machine is composed of a rotor, a stator, a control PC, an electro-magnet excitation circuit, and a power supply. The rotor that its outer diameter is 200 [mm] is composed of double spherical shells in order to contain liquid in its inner spherical shell. Totally 91 permanent magnets are arranged in almost spherical symmetry on the inner surface of the outer spherical shell. On the other hand, 80 electro-magnets are arranged on the stator of a semi-spherical shell. The applicability of the mixing machine to material production under the condition of small influence of gravitational force is evaluated by mixing experiments to dissolve salt of 50 [g] in water of 200 [g]. The mixing performance is compared for five mixing methods. The results show that the mixing performance of the method to change randomly the rotation direction is only slightly lower than that of the method of rotating continuously around a horizontal axis that exhibits the highest mixing performance.

    This paper presents a prototype of holonomic omnidirectional moving vehicle driven by a spherical motor that rotates in all directions. This paper also proposes a method called spherical deceleration driving method that can increase the driving torque by tilting the rotation axis of the spherical motor. Experimental results to evaluate the moving performance of the prototype vehicle by the spherical deceleration driving method show that the measured driving forces are almost coincident with the theoretical values within the range that the driving torque of the spherical motor does not exceed the maximum static frictional force between the motor surface and floor. In addition, the driving force can be increased up to about twice the value at the inclination angle of 0 °. On the other hand, the measured moving speeds are well agreed with the theoretical speeds if the slip between the surface of the rotor of sperical motor and road surface does not exist. © 2011 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

    This paper presents a spherical motor driven by electro-magnets that can rotate omnidirectionally with some degrees of rotation angle error independent of rotation direction. The spherical motor is composed of a spherical rotor, a semi-spherical stator, a control PC, a control circuit, and a DC power supply. The rotor has 92 neodymium magnets. On the other hand, 84 electro-magnets are arranged on the stator. Each electro-magnet can be excited to north or south magnetic pole. The control PC calculates the posture of the rotor after a small time interval and generates the pattern of excitation of electro-magnets in order to rotate the rotor to its calculated posture. The results of the performance of the developed spherical motor show that the maximum torque is 0.24 (N . m), the maximum rotation speed is 2.5 (rad/s), and the average error of rotation angle is several degrees.

    Reinforcement learning is very interesting for robot learning. However, there are some significant problems in applying conventional reinforcement learning algorithms to the robot with many degrees of freedom, because the size of exploration space increase exponentially with increase of degrees of freedom, and it makes it impossible to accomplish learning process. On the other hand, animals and humans can learn and accomplish various tasks using many redundant degrees of freedom of the body in spite of the exploration space is very huge. In this paper, we consider how to solve the state explosion problem in applying the reinforcement learning to the redundant robot and propose new framework of reinforcement learning, which is inspired by the body image of animals, by summarizing our previous works of reinforcement learning. To demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method, simulations and experiments have been carried out and as a result effective behaviors have been obtained.

    This paper proposes an anomaly cause identification technique in the case of a single anomaly occurring in a plant. The technique 1) defines anomaly modes based on a functional model and the structure for each component or system of plants, 2) uses estimation rules collected previously as a knowledge base to judge the occurrence of each anomaly mode, and 3) identifies the anomaly cause by expanding the search space using the component connection information from the part model including the component where an anomalous behavior is detected. A simple technique is also formulated and implemented to estimate the values of unobserved flow rates based on mass balance equations. The applicability of the proposed anomaly cause identification technique is demonstrated through the applications to several anomaly scenarios for a system around a main fractionator of an oil refinery plant.

    This paper introduces a novel camera attachment for measuring the illumination color spatially in the scene. The illumination color is then used to transform color appearance in the image into that under white light. The main idea is that the scene inter-reflection through a reference camera-attached surface 'Nose' can, under some conditions, represent the illumination color directly. The illumination measurement principle relies on the satisfaction of the gray world assumption in a local scene area or the appearance of highlights, from dielectric surfaces. Scene inter-reflections are strongly blurred due to optical dispersion on the nose surface and defocusing of the nose surface image. Blurring smoothes the intense highlights and it thus becomes possible to measure the nose inter-reflection under conditions in which intensity variation in the main image would exceed the sensor dynamic range. We designed a nose surface to reflect a blurred scene version into a small image section, which is interpreted as a spatial illumination image. The nose image is then mapped to the main image for adjusting every pixel color. Experimental results showed that the nose inter-reflection color is a good measure of illumination color when the model assumptions are satisfied. The nose method performance, operating on real images, is presented and compared with the Retinex and the scene-inserted white patch methods.

    This study develops a flexible artificial hand system with slip sensors. The artificial hand is composed of four flexible actuators. Two pairs of two opposite actuators are driven by the independent air pressure sources each. In each pair, one of opposite pair of actuators is equipped with a slip sensor. The slip sensor is composed of a photo reflector and a conductive rubber sensitive to load force. The contact of the hand to an object is detected by the change of resistance of the conductive rubber. After the detection of contact, the slip velocity is measured by calculating the cross-correlation function of the output voltage waveforms of two photo transistors in the photo reflector. The grasping force of the hand is increased according to the measured slip velocity. The calculation of the cross-correlation function and the generation of control signals are made in a host personal computer. From the experimental results of holding several objects, the hand system is proved to grasp suitably the object whose weight is previously unknown.

    This paper proposes a technique to derive candidates of counter actions applying both functional modeling and qualitative reasoning methods with the purpose of supporting operator actions in an anomalous situation of engineering plants. A plant model is constructed by adding necessary knowledge to derive counter actions to a functional model of a target system by the MFM (Multilevel Flow Modelling). Algorithms are given to infer the affection of an anomaly, to determine the priority of plant states and/or goals to be recovered, and to derive candidates of counter actions. The applicability of the proposed technique is discussed using an anomalous case in a fluidized-bed refuse incineration plant.

    In order to accomplish efficient execution of a dynamic simulation of engineering systems, it is important to construct suitable mathematical models for the simulation. In the construction of the mathematical models, it is necessary to estimate the system's behavior to suppose the phenomena which are needed to be modeled. The case-based reasoning is considered to be a powerful tool to estimate the outline of system's behavior because we often estimate it from the similar cases which are stored as our experience or in literature. In this study, the technique based on similar cases is investigated to estimate the outline of time-responses of several important variables of pressurized water reactor (PWR) plants at a small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA). The registered cases in case base are gathered from various reports and the authors' numerical simulations related with SBLOCA of PWR plants. The functions to use in the case retrieval are formed from the characteristic features of SBLOCA of PWR plants. On the other hand, the rules to use in the case refinement are obtained from the qualitative and quantitative consideration of plants' behaviors of the cases in the case base. The applicability of the technique is discussed by two simple estimation trials of plant behavior. © 1994, Atomic Energy Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

    In this study, two support tools are developed for construction of a dynamic simulation program for engineering systems (especially nuclear systems) by combining software modules. These are (1) a sub-system to support the module selection suitable for dynamic simulation and (2) a graphical user interface to support visual construction of simulation programs. The support tools are designed to be independent on the conception of software modules (data communication methods between modules). In the module selection sub-system of item 1, a module is characterized beforehand by keywords for several criteria. The similarity between the characteristic of requested module by users and that of registered modules in the module library is estimated by a weighted average of similarity indexes for criteria. In the module selection sub-system, the weights are flexibly extracted from users by applying the analytic hierarchy process. The graphical user interface helps users to specify both calling order of modules and data transfer between two modules. The availability of the support tools is evaluated by several sample problems of module selection and dynamic simulation model construction. The support tools will be a strong tool for the efficient usage of software modules.

    This paper deals with an application of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to extract the user's purpose which must be input to expert systems. In the AHP, the process to obtain the weights for criteria by pairwise comparisons is interpreted as the extraction of the decision marker's idea about the importance of each criterion. With this interpretation, the analytic hierarchy process is applied to extract the analyst's idea of the weights of several factors to select constitutive equations suitable for a target analysis in a model selection support expert system under development for numerical simulation of nuclear thermal-hydraulics; the constitutive equations are ordinary introduced in a liquid-vapor two-phase flow analysis. Furthermore, an algorithm by applying the graph theory is shown to evaluate covering condition to obtain the weights from incomplete pairwise comparisons.

    This paper deals with computerized supporting techniques of a numerical simulation of complex and large-scaled engineering systems like nuclear power plants. As an example of the intelligent support systems of dynamic simulation, a proto-type expert system is developed on an expert system development tool to support the selection of mathematical model which is a first step of numerical simulation and is required both wide expert knowledge and high-level decision making. The expert system supports the selection of liquid-vapor two phase flow models (fluid model and constitutive equations) consistent with simulation purpose and condition in the case of thermal-hydraulic simulation of nuclear power plants. The possibility of the expert system is examined for various selection support cases by both investigation of the appropriateness of the selection support logic and comparison between support results and decision results of several experts.

    The identification method applying the projection operator for less small disturbances which do not instantly lead the alarm initiation has been extended to diagnose PWR plants operated with automatic frequency control. The authors previously proposed the non-linear transformation of the observed signals to satisfy with the linear relationship between the disturbances and the observed signals by utilizing several additional observed signals which are closely related with the non-linear characteristics of PWR plant. In addition, a method is proposed to compensate the fluctuation of observed signals due to automatic frequency control by utilizing both the input signal of the main steam valve control system and the input signal of the control rod control system. The effectiveness of the extended method has been examined by several computer experiments using a simple PWR plant simulation code. © 1990 Taylor &amp
