    Research has suggested that machine translation (MT) is considered extremely useful for L2 readers, but it can be abused. Scholars have therefore called for strategy training on MT usage. However, whether instruction on using MT strategically leads to more selective usage and increased content recall has not been examined. A pre-, posttest control group design was utilized to examine the efficacy of strategy instruction. Data collection involved screen recordings of participants’ page navigation to determine frequency of MT access and to compare MT use of difficult and easy passages. Students were given an immediate recall test to measure comprehension and short-term retention of the content. The results suggested that strategy training led to reduced MT use, but with no significant results between the two groups. The experimental group did not improve recall scores overall, but those who reduced their MT use for easy paragraphs tended to improve their recall scores.機械翻訳（MT）は第二言語読者にとって非常に有用であるが、乱用される可能性があることが研究によって示唆されている。そのため、学者はMT使用に関するストラテジー指導の必要性を訴えてきた。しかし、こうした指導が選択的な使用や内容想起の向上につながるかについては、十分に検討されてこなかった。本研究では、ストラテジー指導の効果を検証するために、事前・事後テストを用いた統制群デザインを採用した。データ収集には、参加者の閲覧行動を画面録画し、MTアクセスの頻度や、難易度の異なる文章でのＭＴ使用を比較した。学生には、内容の理解度と短期保持を測定するために、即時想起テストを実施した。結果として、ストラテジートレーニングによってMT使用の減少が促がされたが、統制群と実験群の間に有意差は認められなかった。実験群全体の想起スコアは改善しなかったが、易しい段落でMT使用を減らした参加者はスコアが向上する傾向を示した。

    Abstract

    Humor convergence, or responding to humor by adding a similar jocular response, is presumed to lead to positive affect and affiliation among interlocutors. L2 learners particularly could benefit from being able to join in on this co-construction of humor, as this would help them build bonds with target language speakers. However, research is lacking on whether convergence is common and effective for all kinds of humor, including self-deprecation and failed humor. This study examined the level at which 23 L2 French learners in a Dutch university converged to 18 fictitious messages which included various kinds of humor, including affiliative absurd irony, third-person sarcasm, jocular flattery, self-deprecation, offensive and incomprehensible humor. The study also analyzed L1 French speakers’ effectiveness ratings of the learners’ responses to the various humor types. Finally, it examined the correlation between humor convergence and effectiveness ratings to determine whether convergence is actually considered effective for all kinds of humor. The findings suggested that the type of humor had a large effect on the level of humor convergence, but more convergent responses were considered more effective for all kinds of humor, except offensive humor. Implications for researchers and educators are discussed.

    Abstract

    This research utilised eye tracking to examine the vocabulary coping strategies and dictionary skills of Japanese English learners in task-based reading. Participants had access to an online dictionary with four definitions per word, including three inapplicable definitions. The interplay and outcomes of reading strategies and dictionary skills were investigated. The research found that performance was not statistically different compared to previous research where participants had access to a dictionary with only the applicable definition. Given the more difficult dictionary, participants more often made regressions to investigate the context in the text, but they did not reduce their dictionary use. Most participants lacked strategic competence while reading, but they demonstrated competence in dictionary skills. In rare instances of failed dictionary use, readers usually had not inspected the context cues in the text. For task-relevant words, participants who re-read context cues and then used the dictionary performed better. Implications for educators and materials developers are discussed.

    Finnish education may be a model for Japanese universities as they look to promote active learning pedagogies. Based on observations and interviews with influential educators from several Finnish institutions, this article overviews key aspects of education in Finland, especially those related to deep learning. The role of faculty development, learning spaces, and co-teaching are also examined. Finally, a pilot course implemented at Okayama University in which the authors aimed to apply key ideas learned in Finland will be described.

    We carried out five empirical experiments using eye tracking to investigate the reading strategies on Japanese learners of English. This has led to five articles in peer-reviewed international journals, including a Q1 and a Q2 journal. Another study is currently being reviewed by a Q1 journal. We also presented the results at 11 conferences. Nine were international conferences, including two presentations at the European Conference of Eye Movements.
    <BR>
    The studies highlighted the importance of reading strategies. Eye tracking showed that closely reading important and difficuly parts of a text can leading to better task performance and vocabulary learning. Meanwhile, reading an entire text in the same way (showing a lack of metacognitive competence) may hinder one's reading ability and learning. Learners who use resources such as dictionaries and machine translation do better when they use it strategically.

    During this project, we implemented a new research study designed to measure the effect of training materials on improving the ability of Japanese learners of English to detect, comprehend, and react to how humor is used in English speaking countries. Our research project resulted in significant results and the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator were thus very successful in having research articles and conference proposals accepted. Publications for this project included an edited book (by the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator), four book chapters, and four peer-reviewed journal articles. The PI was also invited to write a series of columns for TESOL International about the theme of the research project. Despite the impact of COVID-19, the PI also delivered more than 20 oral presentations at academic conferences.

    Using an eye tracking system, we have researched how students approach different reading task types of those typically found in textbooks, as well as the type of reading students perform when they are researching topics for the purpose of writing reports. The eye tracking system provides insight into where participants focus their attention and possible words and areas that participants process. In general we found that students with higher ability in English used more and more appropriate strategies in their reading.

    本研究の目的は、大学レベルの日本人の英語学習者が英語圏で使用されるユーモアのタイプを理解し、その結果英語のコミュニケーションスキルと異文化理解力を伸ばすことでした。近代の日本社会では比較的まれな2つのタイプのユーモアである風刺ニュースと皮肉に重点を置きました。この２つのタイプのユーモアは英語圏の社会では非常に一般的でありますが、日本人の英語学習者にとっては勘違いや混乱をまねく可能性があります。本研究の目的は、日本人の学習者がそういったユーモアを発することが目的ではなく、ユーモアに気付き適切に反応を示すことでした。

    このプロジェクトでは、研究費により購入できる設備の性能には限界がありながらも、日本人の英語学習者の読書戦略への興味深い有用な洞察が得られました。 私たちは、2つの尊敬される国際雑誌でその結果を発表し、英語教育から眼球運動まで、幅広い学問分野にわたる国内外の会議で結果を発表しました。 全体として、実験を行う際に使用したタスクでは、能力の高い生徒以外のすべてが、戦略的な方法で読み込みを行なっていないことがが分かりました。 これは、主に要約を書くための読書と、オンラインテキスト内の特定の情報を見つけるための読書を含む選択的注意を評価するタスクです。
