We examined Confucian scholars in the second half of the 18th century from multiple perspectives, using Lai Shunsui (1746-1816) as an example. The results are as follows.
Confucianists of the period were, of course, oriented toward the practice of Confucian ideals, but they were also defined by the reality of their family structure and the customs of the samurai. Conversely, the reality sometimes helped them to put their ideals into practice. In addition to ideological exchanges, their human relationships were strongly connected by geographical, blood, and social status, so that conflicts between schools of thought, although they sometimes surfaced, were less noticeable than before. We have used the database (JBDB https://app.jbdb.jp/#/), which is useful in understanding these human ties. -

本研究の構成員は、地域ごとに日本班、中国班（台湾、韓国、ベトナムも含む）インド・チベット・ブータン班に分かれ、研究対象ごとにそれぞれの内部で医事文献組、思想文献組およびフィールド組に分かれる。
２０１９年度は、まず最初の４ヶ月の間に１年間及び３年間の活動計画・研究目的などを構成員にメーリングリストで連絡し、総員の基本的なコンセンサスを得るべく議論を行った。さらに、各地域を担当する班ごとに、研究の進め方について打合せと情報交換を行い、各班および各組における研究計画を定めた。また、各班のフィールド組は、視察する機関や海外協力者との連絡と打ち合わせを行った。
それを踏まえて、第１回全体会合を８月２日に開催した。このとき、各班が足並みをそろえた研究や作業を行えるように研究計画の調整を試み、当該時点までに進めてある研究内容についての報告会と勉強会も行った。
８月以降は各班の各構成員がそれぞれの課題と目標に基づいて作業を進めた。文献組は、必要な資料の収集に努め、適宜同一ユニットの人々と情報や意見を交換しつつ、重要文献の解読作用等を進めた。フィールド組の人は、夏から冬の休みの期間などを使って、各自の担当フィールドに可能な限り赴き、情報収集や資料収集などの活動を行った。
年末の２０１９年１２月２９日には再び全体集会を行い、海外協力者の招聘と講演、および構成員による研究報告会等を実施しつつ、今年度の進行程度や成果を確認し、それを基に来年度の計画の打合せを行った。
なお、コアメンバーの横手、浦山、内山はこれらの過程を通じて常に各構成員（研究分担者、研究協力者、海外協力者）の間に立って連絡を行いつつ、情報の共有や各班・各組における作業の進度あるいは方向等の調整にあたった。 -
Construction of Academic Foundations and Development of a Curriculum for the Creation of Medical Ethics of Hansen's disease

In Japan, patients with Hansen‘s disease were forcibly detained, followed by lifetime isolation. To prevent the same mistakes, it is necessary to establish medical ethics for Hansen‘s disease. This project primarily constructed a curriculum on "Hansen‘s disease and Medical Ethics" (for medical students), and on “Hansen‘s disease and Human Dignity” (for elementary to university students), which initiated a series of on-site lectures. Subsequent qualitative analysis of survival narratives elucidated the ethical issues of lost sight due to clinical trials, the structure of spiritual pain from lifelong isolation, perceptual disorders, and their perception of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our published book, "The Beauty of Nature and Prayer in Sanatoriums," and the digital teaching materials, convey the wisdom gained through a life of hardship. Finally, the Society for the Ethics of Hansen‘s disease was established, and the journal “Hansen‘s disease and Human Dignity” was published.

Intellectual Interaction Amongst Scholars Centering on Kaitokudo School

Our project's aim was the examination of the shifting ideas amongst Kaitokudo scholars as seen in their criticism of other schools of thought. Whereas in its beginning the Kaitokudo had no established intellectual position but was rather eclectic in its approach, Goi Ranshu, even though as an adherent of Neo-Confucian thought, criticized the school of Ogyu Sorai in his regard of the notion of meibun (moral obligations according to one's name and function in society), which implied to him the practice of both, loyalty to one's country and the submission to the domestic political order. Nakai Chikuzan, on the other hand, considered terminology (bun) to be of great importance and thus brings him in terms of thought closer to with Sorai on this account.
We also investigated the scholars' networks centered around the Kaitokudo. Next to intellectual interaction, we identified networks that went beyond the immediate community and kinship relations and disregarded the ideological differences. -

The main results of this research are the three points: 1) In modern Japan (in the late Meiji and Taisho periods), humanities research was positioned in the overall concept of “Gerontorogy”.2) From the past to the present, "40 years old" and "40s" are considered to be the beginning of "old age" from physical problems, from the past to the present, and it is important to reconsider the meaning of this age.3) In Japan, when thinking about "old age", there is a common sense that "Meiwaku wo kaketakunai".We consider this consciousness historically and comparatively culturally.
