    In the past few years, we have gained a better understanding of the information processing mechanism in the human brain, which has led to advances in artificial intelligence and humanoid robots. However, among the various sensory systems, studying the somatosensory system presents the greatest challenge. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the human somatosensory system and its corresponding applications in artificial systems. Due to the uniqueness of the human hand in integrating receptor and actuator functions, we focused on the role of the somatosensory system in object recognition and action guidance. First, the low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the human skin and somatotopic organization principles along the ascending pathway, which are fundamental to artificial skin, were summarized. Second, we discuss high-level brain areas, which interacted with each other in the haptic object recognition. Based on this close-loop route, we used prosthetic upper limbs as an example to highlight the importance of somatosensory information. Finally, we present prospective research directions for human haptic perception, which could guide the development of artificial somatosensory systems.

    Working memory refers to the cognitive capacity to temporarily store and manipulate information from multiple sensory domains. Recent studies have shown that cognitive training can improve performance in both visual working memory and tactile working memory tasks. However, it is still unclear whether the effects of training can be transferred from one sensory modality to another. The current study assessed whether the training effect of the tactile orientation sequence task could transfer to visual orientation sequence and visuospatial working memory tasks. The results showed that participants’ accuracy in the tactile orientation sequence task was significantly increased after 9 days of training compared with that before training. Remarkably, participants’ accuracy in both the visual orientation sequence task and the visuospatial task was significantly improved after 9 days of training. These results suggest that it is possible to improve visual working memory through a transfer effect from tactile task training without practice in the visual domain, which opens a wide range of applications for tactile orientation sequence tasks.

    Touch shape discrimination is not only closely related to tactile mechanoreceptors but also higher cognitive function. However, previous shape discrimination methods are difficult to complete in a short time, and the devices are complicated to operate and not user-friendly for nonprofessionals. Here, we propose a new method, the evaluation quantity of which is the angle discrimination threshold. In addition, to make this method easy to use for nonprofessionals, we designed a haptic angle sorting system, including the device and software. To evaluate this method, the angle sorting and two-angle discrimination experiments were compared, and it was found that participants spent significantly less time in the former experiment than in the latter. At the same time, there is a strong correlation between the performance of angle sorting and two-angle discrimination, which shows that the angle threshold obtained by the new method can also be used to evaluate the ability of touch discrimination. Moreover, the angle sorting results of different age groups also further demonstrate the feasibility of the method. The efficiency of this new method and the effectiveness of the system also provide a convenient means for evaluating haptic shape discrimination, which may have potential clinical application value in the early diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy and even in the evaluation of cognitive function.

    Neuronal excitation and inhibition occur in the brain at the same time, and brain activation reflects changes in the sum of excitation and inhibition. This principle has been well-established in lower-level sensory systems, including vision and touch, based on animal studies. However, it is unclear how the somatosensory system processes the balance between excitation and inhibition. In the present ERP study, we modified the traditional spatial attention paradigm by adding double stimuli presentations at short intervals (i.e., 10, 30, and 100 ms). Seventeen subjects participated in the experiment. Five types of stimulation were used in the experiment: a single stimulus (one raised pin for 40 ms), standard stimulus (eight pins for 40 ms), and double stimuli presented at intervals of 10, 30, and 100 ms. The subjects were asked to attend to a particular finger and detect whether the standard stimulus was presented to that finger. The results showed a clear attention-related ERP component in the single stimulus condition, but the suppression components associated with the three interval conditions seemed to be dominant in somatosensory areas. In particular, we found the strongest suppression effect in the ISI-30 condition (interval of 30 ms) and that the suppression and enhancement effects seemed to be counterbalanced in both the ISI-10 and ISI-100 conditions (intervals of 10 and 100 ms, respectively). This type of processing may allow humans to easily discriminate between multiple stimuli on the same body part.

    Attentional processes play a complex and multifaceted role in the integration of input from different sensory modalities. However, whether increased attentional load disrupts the audiovisual (AV) integration of common objects that involve semantic content remains unclear. Furthermore, knowledge regarding how semantic congruency interacts with attentional load to influence the AV integration of common objects is limited. We investigated these questions by examining AV integration under various attentional-load conditions. AV integration was assessed by adopting an animal identification task using unisensory (animal images and sounds) and AV stimuli (semantically congruent AV objects and semantically incongruent AV objects), while attentional load was manipulated by using a rapid serial visual presentation task. Our results indicate that attentional load did not attenuate the integration of semantically congruent AV objects. However, semantically incongruent animal sounds and images were not integrated (as there was no multisensory facilitation), and the interference effect produced by the semantically incongruent AV objects was reduced by increased attentional-load manipulations. These findings highlight the critical role of semantic congruency in modulating the effect of attentional load on the AV integration of common objects.

    We measured the eccentricity effect of deformation thresholds of circular contours for two types of the radial frequency (RF) patterns with their centers at the fixation point: constant circular contour frequency (CCF) RF patterns and constant RF magnified (retino-cortical scaling) RF patterns. We varied the eccentricity by changing the mean radius of the RF patterns while keeping the centers of the RF patterns at the fixation point. Our peripheral stimulus presentation was distinguished from previous studies which have simply translated RF patterns at different locations in the visual field. Sensitivity for such shape discrimination fell off as the moderate and high CCF patterns were presented on more eccentric sites but did not as the low CCF patterns. However, sensitivity held constant as the magnified RF patterns were presented on more eccentric sites, indicating that the eccentricity effects observed for the high and moderate CCF patterns were neutralized by retinocortical mapping. Notably, sensitivity for the magnified RF patterns with large radii (4°–16°) presented in the peripheral field revealed a similar RF dependence observed for RF patterns with small radii (0.25°–1.0°) presented at the fovea in previous studies.

    Perceptual learning, which is not limited to sensory modalities such as vision and touch, emerges within a training session and between training sessions and is accompanied by the remodeling of neural connections in the cortex. However, limited knowledge exists regarding perceptual learning between training sessions. Although tactile studies have paid attention to between-session learning effects, there have been few studies asking fundamental questions regarding whether the time interval between training sessions affects tactile perceptual learning and generalization across tactile tasks. We investigated the effects of different training time intervals on the consecutive performance of a tactile angle discrimination (AD) task and a tactile orientation discrimination (OD) task training on tactile angle discriminability. The results indicated that in the short-interval training group, AD task performance significantly improved in the early stage of learning and nearly plateaued in the later stage, whereas in the long-interval training group, significant improvement was delayed and then also nearly plateaued in the later stage; additionally, improved OD task performance resulted in improved AD task performance. These findings suggest that training time interval affects the early stage of learning but not the later stage and that generalization occurs between different types of tactile tasks.

    NEW & NOTEWORTHY Perceptual learning, which constitutes important foundations of complicated cognitive processes, is learning better perception skills. We demonstrate that training time interval can affect the early stage of learning but not the later stage. Moreover, a tactile orientation discrimination training task can also improve tactile angle discrimination performance. These findings may expand the characteristics of between-session learning and help understand the mechanism of the generalization across tactile tasks.

    Temporal expectation relies on different predictive information, such as regular rhythms and symbolic cues, to direct attention to a future moment in time to optimize behaviour. However, whether differences exist between temporal expectations driven by regular rhythms and symbolic cues has not been clearly established. In this study, 20 participants performed two temporal expectation tasks in which a rhythmic cue or a symbolic cue indicated (70% expected) that the target would appear after an interval of 500 ms (short), 1,500 ms (medium), or 2,500 ms (long). We found larger cueing effects for the rhythmic cued task than for the symbolic cued task during the short interval, indicating that rhythmic cues were more effective in improving performance. Furthermore, no significant difference was found during the longer interval, reflect that the behavioural differences between the two forms of temporal expectations were likely to diminish as the time interval increased. Thus, we speculate that the temporal expectation driven by rhythmic cues differs from that driven by symbolic cues only in the limited time range; however, the mechanisms underlying the two forms of temporal expectations trend to become more similar over increasing temporal scales.

    When humans perceive a sensation, their brains integrate inputs from sensory receptors and process them based on their expectations. The mechanisms of this predictive coding in the human somatosensory system are not fully understood. We fill a basic gap in our understanding of the predictive processing of somatosensation by examining the layer-specific activity in sensory input and predictive feedback in the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1). We acquired submillimeter functional magnetic resonance imaging data at 7T (n = 10) during a task of perceived, predictable, and unpredictable touching sequences. We demonstrate that the sensory input from thalamic projects preferentially activates the middle layer, while the superficial and deep layers in S1 are more engaged for cortico-cortical predictive feedback input. These findings are pivotal to understanding the mechanisms of tactile prediction processing in the human somatosensory cortex.

    The basal ganglia, which have been shown to be a significant multisensory hub, are disordered in Parkinson's disease (PD). This study was to investigate the audiovisual integration of peripheral stimuli in PD patients with/without sleep disturbances. Thirty-six age-matched normal controls (NC) and 30 PD patients were recruited for an auditory/visual discrimination experiment. The mean response times for each participant were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and race model. The results showed that the response to all stimuli was significantly delayed for PD compared to NC (all p < 0.01). The response to audiovisual stimuli was significantly faster than that to unimodal stimuli in both NC and PD (p < 0.001). Additionally, audiovisual integration was absent in PD; however, it did occur in NC. Further analysis showed that there was no significant audiovisual integration in PD with/without cognitive impairment or in PD with/without sleep disturbances. Furthermore, audiovisual facilitation was not associated with Hoehn and Yahr stage, disease duration, or the presence of sleep disturbances (all p > 0.05). The current results showed that audiovisual multisensory integration for peripheral stimuli is absent in PD regardless of sleep disturbances and further suggested the abnormal audiovisual integration might be a potential early manifestation of PD.

    Humans are able to judge the speed of an object's motion by touch. Research has suggested that tactile judgment of speed is influenced by physical properties of the moving object, though the neural mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to investigate brain networks that may be involved in tactile speed classification and how such networks may be affected by an object's texture. Participants were asked to classify the speed of 2-D raised dot patterns passing under their right middle finger. Activity in the parietal operculum, insula, and inferior and superior frontal gyri was positively related to the motion speed of dot patterns. Activity in the postcentral gyrus and superior parietal lobule was sensitive to dot periodicity. Psycho-physiological interaction (PPI) analysis revealed that dot periodicity modulated functional connectivity between the parietal operculum (related to speed) and postcentral gyrus (related to dot periodicity). These results suggest that texture-sensitive activity in the primary somatosensory cortex and superior parietal lobule influences brain networks associated with tactually-extracted motion speed. Such effects may be related to the influence of surface texture on tactile speed judgment.

    Attentional modulation of the neural activities in human visual areas has been well demonstrated. However, the retinotopic activities that are driven by face and house images and attention to face and house images remain unknown. In the present study, we used images of faces and houses to estimate the retinotopic activities that were driven by both the images and attention to the images, driven by attention to the images, and driven by the images. Generally, our results show that both face and house images produced similar retinotopic activities in visual areas, which were only observed in the attention + stimulus and the attention conditions, but not in the stimulus condition. The fusiform face area (FFA) responded to faces that were presented on the horizontal meridian, whereas parahippocampal place area (PPA) rarely responded to house at any visual field. We further analyzed the amplitudes of the neural responses to the target wedge. In V1, V2, V3, V3A, lateral occipital area 1 (LO-1), and hV4, the neural responses to the attended target wedge were significantly greater than those to the unattended target wedge. However, in LO-2, ventral occipital areas 1 and 2 (VO-1 and VO-2) and FFA and PPA, the differences were not significant. We proposed that these areas likely have large fields of attentional modulation for face and house images and exhibit responses to both the target wedge and the background stimuli. In addition, we proposed that the absence of retinotopic activity in the stimulus condition might imply no perceived difference between the target wedge and the background stimuli.

    Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or positron emission tomography (PET), much knowledge has been gained in understanding how the brain is activated during controlled experiments of language tasks in educated healthy subjects and in uneducated healthy subjects. While previous studies have compared performance between alphabetic subjects, few data were about Chinese-speaking individuals. In this study, we used fMRI to investigate brain activations in processing characters and figures by visual tasks in 13 Chinese subjects. Significant activation patterns were observed in the occipital regions, the temporal regions, the parietal regions, the frontal regions and cerebellum. We conclude that constellation of neural substrates is bilateral network for Chinese healthy subjects and the formation of this neural network is affected by the impact of education rather than experience.

    Cross-modal attention and multisensory integration are very essential for us to perceive the world. The most intuitive feelings about the environment around us are based on what we see and what we hear. Therefore, it is important to understand the interactions between visual inputs and auditory inputs. Previous studies have shown that multisensory integration can be modulated by attention. However, how top-down attention is controlled or allocated across the sensory modalities remains unclear. In this study, we measured the cortical areas activated by the cue-target spatial attention paradigm in both visual and auditory fields using functional MRI. The reaction times of the behavioral results indicated that interactions between the two types of stimuli exist. The imaging results indicated that interactions between multisensory inputs can lead to enhancement or depression of the cortical response with top-down spatial attention. Moreover, the activation of the middle temporal gyrus and insula in tasks with irrelevant stimuli appears to indicate that multisensory integration proceeds automatically.     Visual word expertise is typically associated with enhanced ventral occipito-temporal (vOT) cortex activation in response to written words. Previous study utilized a passive viewing task and found that vOT response to written words was significantly stronger in literate compared to the illiterate subjects. However, recent neuroimaging findings have suggested that vOT response properties are highly dependent upon the task demand. Thus, it is unknown whether literate adults would show stronger vOT response to written words compared to illiterate adults during other cognitive tasks, such as perceptual matching. We addressed this issue by comparing vOT activations between literate and illiterate adults during a Chinese character and simple figure matching task. Unlike passive viewing, a perceptual matching task requires active shape comparison, therefore minimizing automatic word processing bias. We found that although the literate group performed better at Chinese character matching task, the two subject groups showed similar strong vOT responses during this task. Overall, the findings indicate that the vOT response to written words is not affected by expertise during a perceptual matching task, suggesting that the association between visual word expertise and vOT response may depend on the task demand.     The repetition of a stimulus task reduces the neural activity within certain cortical regions responsible for working memory (WM) processing. Although previous evidence has shown that repeated vibrotactile stimuli reduce the activation in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, whether the repeated tactile spatial stimuli triggered the priming effect correlated with the same cortical region remains unclear. Therefore, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a delayed match-to-sample task to investigate the contributions of the priming effect to tactile spatial WM processing. Fourteen healthy volunteers were asked to encode three tactile angle stimuli during the encoding phase and one tactile angle stimulus during the recognition phase. Then, they answered whether the last angle stimulus was presented during the encoding phase. As expected, both the Match and Non-Match tasks activated a similar cerebral network. The critical new finding was decreased brain activity in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and bilateral medial frontal gyri (mFG) for the match task compared to the Non-Match task. Therefore, we suggest that the tactile priming engaged repetition suppression mechanisms during tactile angle matching, and this process decreased the activation of the fronto-parietal circuit, including IFG, mFG and PPC.

    In this manuscript, using a novel wide-view visual presentation system that we developed for vision research and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we studied contrast response functions in regions of the brain that are central and peripheral to the entire set of visual areas (V1, V2, V3, V3A, MT+), regions that have not been all investigated in previous vision research. Under the stimulus conditions which were 0-20 deg, 20-40 deg, and 40-60 deg eccentricity black-and-white checkerboard patterns, we measured the blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI contrast response at five contrast levels (6, 12, 24, 48, and 96%) in the visual areas. On the basis of these data, the central and pericentral visual areas had low-contrast gain, whereas the peripheral visual areas had high-contrast gain. In addition, our results showed that the signals fundamentally shift during visual processing through posterior visual cortical areas (V1, V2, and V3) to superior visual cortical areas (V3A and MT+).

    In everyday life, our brains integrate various kinds of information from different modalities to perceive our complex environment. Temporal synchrony of audiovisual stimuli is required for audiovisual integration. Many studies have shown that temporal asynchrony of visual-auditory stimuli can influence the interaction between visual and auditory stimulus, however, the multisensory mechanisms of asynchrony inputs were not well understood. In present study, visual and auditory stimuli onset asynchrony (SOA= +/- 250 ms, +/- 200 ms, +/- 150 ms, +/- 100 ms, +/- 50 ms, 0 ms), only the auditory stimulus was attended. From the behavioral results, the responses to temporal asynchronous audiovisual stimuli were more accurate than unimodal auditory stimuli. The most significant enhancement was SOA = -100ms condition (the visual preceding), which reaction time was the fastest. These results revealed the basis of audiovisual interaction in which audiovisual stimuli presented with different SOA. The temporal alignment of visual-auditory stimuli can enhance the auditory detection. The study can offer basic theory for artificial intelligence.

    Utilizing the high temporal resolution of event-related potentials (ERPs), we examined how visual spatial or temporal cues modulated the auditory stimulus processing. The visual spatial cue (VSC) induces orienting of attention to spatial locations; the visual temporal cue (VTC) induces orienting of attention to temporal intervals. Participants were instructed to respond to auditory targets. Behavioral responses to auditory stimuli following VSC were faster and more accurate than those following VTC. VSC and VTC had the same effect on the auditory N1 (150-170 ms after stimulus onset). The mean amplitude of the auditory P1 (90-110 ms) in VSC condition was larger than that in VTC condition, and the mean amplitude of late positivity (300-420 ms) in VTC condition was larger than that in VSC condition. These findings suggest that modulation of auditory stimulus processing by visually induced spatial or temporal orienting of attention were different, but partially overlapping.     人間の視野に,一定条件の運動視覚情報を与えることによって,身体が静止状態であるにもかかわらず,自己運動感覚を引き起こすことがある.このことを視覚誘導自己運動感覚と言う.視覚誘導自己運動感覚(Vection)は自己運動感覚の方向によって,大きく二種類に分けられ,視覚誘導自己直線運動感覚(LV:Linear Vection)と視覚誘導自己回転運動感覚(CV:Circular Vection)がある.Vectionの誘導メカニズムを解明するには,時空間周波数と視野などの視覚刺激パラメータの依存性がよく研究されたが,Vectionの輝度依存性はまだ解明されていない.本研究では,大型平面液晶ディスプレイを用いて,LVの空間特性の輝度依存性について検討を行った.その結果,LVは視覚刺激の中心視野の平均輝度変化に有意差が見られ,周辺視野の輝度変化に依存しないことがわかった.

    The present study examined the coding of retinal eccentricity spatial position in object selective cortex. Using a wide-view (about 120 degrees) visual presentation system developed for vision research and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the subject were presented with object, which were presented at a range of viewpoints in 6 level of eccentricity degree. We investigated the BLOD response to stimuli in two regions in the ventral visual cortex (V1) and Lateral Occipital Complex (LOC). The analysis further revealed the weaker BLOD response in the bigger eccentricity in both V1 and LOC areas. However, the activation to objects were quiet different in the cortex region. The V1 areas had flatter decreasing response as eccentricity increasing. However, V1 had bigger response in 11 degrees eccentricity. And the LOC areas had neural activities decreasing sharply as eccentricity increasing. The result suggests reflected the neural response character influenced by eccentricity and stimuli cartage.

    In present paper, we described a novel wide-view visual presentation system for fMRI studies. To achieve a wide field view, a translucent spherical screen with a curvature radius of 30 mm was placed 30 mm away from the subjects' eyes. The subjects wore contact lenses that enabled them to focus on the screen, and the resulting visual field reached 120 degrees. Then, high resolution computer-generated images were projected onto the translucent hemispheric screen inside the MRI bore. Signal-to-noise ratio valuation experiment was performed to evaluate the clarity and quality of the MRI images. In addition, we successfully applied this visual presentation system to studies of visual retinotopic mapping and object perception neural function in the peripheral visual field. Our study demonstrated that the system is compatible with the MRI environment. Moreover, this system was more effective at mapping checkerboard stimuli in V1-V3, and successfully located several classical category-selective areas, including the face-selective area (FFA), occipital face area (OFA), house-selective area (PPA), transverse occipital sulcus (TOS), lateral occipital complex (LOC) in higher-level visual areas. In conclusion, the wide-view visual presentation system within the MRI environment can be applied to many kinds of fMRI studies of peripheral vision.

    Top-down attention to spatial and temporal cues has been thoroughly studied in the visual domain. However, because the neural systems that are important for auditory top-down temporal attention (i.e., attention based on time interval cues) remain undefined, the differences in brain activity between directed attention to auditory spatial location (compared with time intervals) are unclear. Using fMRI (magnetic resonance imaging), we measured the activations caused by cue-target paradigms by inducing the visual cueing of attention to an auditory target within a spatial or temporal domain. Imaging results showed that the dorsal frontoparietal network (dFPN), which consists of the bilateral intraparietal sulcus and the frontal eye field, responded to spatial orienting of attention, but activity was absent in the bilateral frontal eye field (FEF) during temporal orienting of attention. Furthermore, the fMRI results indicated that activity in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) was significantly stronger during spatial orienting of attention than during temporal orienting of attention, while the DLPFC showed no significant differences between the two processes. We conclude that the bilateral dFPN and the right VLPFC contribute to auditory spatial orienting of attention. Furthermore, specific activations related to temporal cognition were confirmed within the superior occipital gyrus, tegmentum, motor area, thalamus and putamen.

    Retinotopic mapping is a key property of organization in the human occipital cortex. The retinotopic organization of the central visual field of visual areas V1, V2, and V3 has been well established. We used fMRI to measure the retinotopic map of the peripheral visual field (eccentricity up to 60 degrees). We estimated the sizes of the visual areas between 0 degrees and 60 degrees and obtained results consistent with anatomical studies. We also estimated the cortical distances and magnification factors for reconstruction of the retinotopic map using the peripheral wedge dipole model. By comparing the retinotopic map with the flattened surface, we analyzed the datasets used to reconstruct the map. We found that: (1) the percentage of the striate cortex devoted to peripheral vision in humans is significantly larger than that in the macaque, (2) the estimate of the scaling factor in linear magnification is larger than that found in previous studies focusing on central vision, and (3) the estimate of the peripheral factor in the dipolar model is too large to make the curve direction of the dipolar map in the periphery equivalent to that in the center. On the basis of our results, we revised the dipolar map to fit our conditions. The revised map in humans has a similar elliptical shape to that of macaques, and the central parts of the two species are the same. The different parts of the map are the peripheral regions, for which the peripheral wedge dipole model in humans is reversed compared to that of macaques. Hum Brain Mapp, 2012.     In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the different roles of the posterior inferior frontal gyrus (pIFG) in Chinese character form judgment between literate and illiterate subjects. Using event-related fMRI, 24 healthy right-handed Chinese subjects (12 literates and 12 illiterates) were asked to perform Chinese character and figure form judgment tasks. The blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) differences in pIFG were examined with general linear modeling (GLM). We found differences in reaction times and accuracy between subjects as they performed these tasks. These behavioral differences reflect the different cognitive demands of character form judgment for literate and illiterate individuals. The results showed differences in the BOLD response patterns in the pIFG between the two discrimination tasks and the two subject groups. A comparison of the character and figure tasks showed that literate and illiterate subjects had similar BOLD responses in the inferior frontal gyrus. However, differences in behavioral performance suggest that the pIFG plays a different role in Chinese character form judgment for each subject group. In literate subjects, the left pIFG mediated access to phonology in achieving Chinese character form judgment, whereas the right pIFG participated in the processing of the orthography of Chinese characters. In illiterate subjects, the bilateral frontal gyrus participated in the visual-spatial processing of Chinese characters to achieve form judgment. (C) 2011. Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The human brain can anatomically combine task-relevant information from different sensory pathways to form a unified perception; this process is called multisensory integration. The aim of the present study was to test whether the multisensory integration abilities of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) differed from those of normal aged controls (NC). A total of 64 subjects were divided into three groups: NC individuals (n = 24), MCI patients (n = 19), and probable AD patients (n = 21). All of the subjects were asked to perform three separate audiovisual integration tasks and were instructed to press the response key associated with the auditory, visual, or audiovisual stimuli in the three tasks. The accuracy and response time (RT) of each task were measured, and the RTs were analyzed using cumulative distribution functions to observe the audiovisual integration. Our results suggest that the mean RT of patients with AD was significantly longer than those of patients with MCI and NC individuals. Interestingly, we found that patients with both MCI and AD exhibited adequate audiovisual integration, and a greater peak (time bin with the highest percentage of benefit) and broader temporal window (time duration of benefit) of multisensory enhancement were observed. However, the onset time and peak benefit of audiovisual integration in MCI and AD patients occurred significantly later than did those of the NC. This finding indicates that the cognitive functional deficits of patients with MCI and AD contribute to the differences in performance enhancements of audiovisual integration compared with NC.

    Purpose: To develop and validate the functionality of a novel wide-view visual presentation system with a horizontal and vertical eccentricity angle of 60 degrees for retinotopic mapping by functional MRI (fMRI).
    Materials and Methods: The wide-view presentation system consisted of a 52-mm diameter optical fiber, an entrance apparatus and a presentation apparatus. The terminal edge of the optical fiber at the entrance is fiat, while the terminal edge on the presentation apparatus is a sphere of 60 mm in diameter. The subjects wore contact lenses with +20, +22, or +25 magnification to focus on the stimulus, and the visual field eccentricity angle could reach 60 degrees. The signal to noise ratio valuation experiment was performed to evaluate the clarity and quality of the MRI picture image. Checkerboard and random dot stimuli were used to prove that this system could be applied to retinotopic mapping by fMRI.
    Results: The results of the experiment demonstrated that the system is safe in the MRI environment with minimal distortion and can be used for visual retinotopic mapping studies. Wide-field mapping areas (V6, MST) were found in the human visual cortex. Compared with previous studies, the VI and MT+ surface area approaches but does not fully cover the anatomical area. Nonetheless, the area achieved using the new system is larger than those achievable in previous fMRI studies.
    Conclusion: We developed a versatile, low-cost system for presenting wide-view visual stimuli in the MRI environment. The fMRI retinotopic mapping results proved the viability of this system.

    The cognitive symptoms in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) involve problems with learning, memory or planning. Currently, no medical tests are available to conclusively diagnose dementia pre-mortem. Previous studies have demonstrated that the cognitive deficits of AD can be detected during a preclinical period with neuropsychological tests. This chapter's hypothesis is that cognitive deficit symptoms of AD are detectable using a combination of tactile, kinetic, cognitive, and functional MRI tasks in the earliest stages of the disease. The authors of this chapter offer a novel approach to investigate the early detection of AD with tactile procedures. This chapter introduces the development of two tactile pattern delivery devices. The first delivery device is MRI-compatible and can serve to investigate the underlying neural mechanisms of active and passive tactile pattern discrimination. The second delivery device is designed to investigate the characteristics of passive shape discrimination for psychological experiments. These devices may contribute to the early detection of AD with neuropsychological approaches. The ultimate goal of this research was to confirm the human ability of tactile shape discrimination and determine the differences between age-matched healthy individuals and AD patients. © 2011, IGI Global.

    During the process of school education, children with LD have defects both in spatial WM and controlled attention. However, research on the relation between them is few. Therefore, the study focused on investigating the relation using IOR paradigm as research method of controlled attention. Inhibition of Return (IOR) is the hysteresis phenomenon shown by the reaction of the previous note on the location. And working memory (WM) is a significant factor that affects the appearance and magnitude of IOR. Based on the previous researches, the paper studies the impact of spatial WM on multi-location IOR. The result shows that the load of spatial WM makes multi-location IOR disappeared as well as influencing maintenance and update of information of multi-location IOR. Meanwhile, it proves that spatial WM has an interactive impact on the selective attention.

In this study, we developed a tactile angle discrimination system and examined whether the ability to discriminate tactile angle differed between patients with MCI and AD and the NC group. Thirty-seven subjects were divided into three groups: NC individuals (n - 14); MCI patients (n - 10); and probable AD patients (n = 13). All subjects were asked to differentiate the relative sizes of the reference angle (60 degrees) and one of eight comparison angles by passive touch. The accuracy of angle discrimination was measured and the discrimination threshold was calculated. We discovered that there were significant differences in the angle discrimination thresholds of AD patients compared to the NC group. Interestingly, we also found that ability to discriminate tactile angle of MCI patients were significantly lower than that of the NC group. This is the first study to report that patients with MCI and AD have substantial performance deficits in tactile angle discrimination compared to the NC individuals. This finding may provide a monitor and therapeutic approach in AD diagnosis and treatment.

    In order to improve the operation precision of the remote manipulation systems, it is necessary to clarify the human characteristic of length perception by using fingers. In previous studies, the length perception has not been investigated using multi-fingers grasping. Therefore, we developed a tactile length measuring system in this study. By using this system, some experiments were made to clarify the human length perception for fingers (thumb, index finger, middle finger). These results suggest that human tactile length perception in case of three fingers using is better than that of two fingers (thumb and index finger) condition.

    We investigated changes in the behavioral performance and brain activities associated with word priming in a Word Stem Completion (WSC) task in Japanese. In the behavioral results, we found obvious facilitatory effects in subject's performance. The percentage of correct answers in word non priming (P/N) condition was 94%, while the percentage of correct answers in word priming P/Y-condition was 100%. Averaged reaction time in word P/N- condition was 1501ms, while that of word P/N-condition was 978ms and 3106ms in non word P/Y-condition respectively. In the fMRI experiment, the same tasks were performed by the block-design experimental paradigm without any overt response in MRI scanner. As the fMRI results, we found the activations in the bilateral middle and inferior frontal gyrus with right hemispheric prevalence, the superior and inferior parietal gyms, and the supplementary motor area. The prefrontal-parietal network observed in our study is consistent with the activated areas in word stem task in English. These results suggested that the facilitatory effects observed in WSC-test include implicit memory access and the induced attention after successful retrieval.

    Human area V1 offers an excellent opportunity to study, using functional MRI, a range of properties in a specific cortical visual area, whose borders are defined objectively and convergently by retinotopic criteria. Previous fMRI studies in VI retinotopic are typically used central and/or peri-central visual field stimulus. The retinotopic characteristics on human peripheral vision are still not well known.
    In this study, we developed a new visual presentation system widest view (60 deg of eccentricity). The wide-view visual presentation system was made from nonmagnetic optical fibers and a contact lens, so can use in general clinical fMRI condition and the cost is lower. We used the newly wide view visual presentation system, firstly get a success in the world to identify human primary visual cortex (VI) of the eccentricity 60 deg. And we acquired the areal cortical magnification function for VI between the 0-60deg eccentricities was Mareal =272/(E+1.44)boolean AND 2. The mean cortical surface area of V1 between the 0-60deg eccentricities was about 2229mm boolean AND 2. Our results have well agreement with the using physiological, patients and anatomical measurements.
    The analysis indicates that (1) the estimate of scaling factor in linear magnification factors is larger than previous studies which focus on central vision. (2) the estimate of the peripheral factor in dipolar model is too large to make the curve direction of the iso-eccentricity ring's in the periphery be the same as that on the center in VI.

    The retinotopic characteristics on human peripheral vision are still not well known. The position, surface area and visual field representation of human visual areas V 1, V2 and V3 were measured using fMRI in 8 subjects (16 hemispheres). Cortical visual field maps of the 120deg were measured using rotating wedge and expanding ring stimuli. The boundaries between areas were identified using an automated procedure to fit an atlas of the expected visual field map to the data. All position and surface area measurements were made along the boundary between white matter and gray matter. In this study, we developed a new visual presentation system widest view (60 deg of eccentricity). The wide-view visual presentation system was made from nonmagnetic optical fibers and a contact lens, so can use in general clinical fMRI condition and the cost is lower.     Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we have researched the variation in response magnitude, in each visual areas (V1-V3), as a function of visual retintotopic areas (V1-V3) and temporal frequency (TF). Each visual area was identified in each subject using a combination of retinotopic mapping IMRI and cortical flattening techniques. A checkerboard was used as the stimulus in the study in which we TF was 2, 4, 8, 16Hz. It was hypothesized the peripheral stimulation would lead to faster onset latencies, as well as preferentially activae doral stream visual areas relative to central field stimulation. For the experiment we constructed fIVIRI amplitude tuning curves, averaged across subjects, for each visual area. The tuning curves that resulted are consistent with the known physiological properties of cells in the corresponding macaque visual areas, previous functional imaging studies, and in the case of V1, the psychophysically determined contrast sensitivity functions for temporal frequency. And retinotopic mapping is a key property of organization of human occipital cortex. The retinotopic organization of the central visual field of visual areas V1/V2/V3 has been well estimated. We also used functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMR1) to measure the retinotopic mapping of the peripheral visual field (eccentricity up to 60deg). We estimate the locations of the visual areas in 0 similar to 60deg and the result is coincident with the anatomical studies. Visual areas V1, V2, V3 showed more direction sensitivity at low temporal frequencies in the central visual area, while there was the same signal change in the peripheral visual areas.

    It is very important to understand human visual characteristics in the wide-view condition for traffic safety. In the present study, we focus on human basic visual characteristics of retinotopic mapping by using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), and provide basic research results for traffic safety. Previous fMRI studies on human visual retinotopic mapping are typically used for central and/or peri-central visual field stimulus. The retinotopic characteristics on human peripheral vision are still not well known. In this study, we developed a new visual presentation system widest view (60 degrees of eccentricity). The wide-view visual presentation system was made from nonmagnetic optical fibers and a contact lens, so it can used in general clinical fMRI conditions and the cost is lower. In the present study, by using the newly developed wide view visual presentation system, we have firstly been able to gain success in the world to identify the human primary visual cortex (V1) with an eccentricity of 60 degrees and the quantitative relationship between V1and peripheral visual field (eccentricity up to 60 degrees) by fMRI. In addition, we estimated the mean area for the V1 between 0-60 degree eccentricities, and acquired the areal cortical magnification function for V1 between 0-60 degree eccentricities was Mareal = 272/(E+1.44)2. The mean cortical surface area of V1 between the 0-60 degree eccentricities was about 2229 mm2. Our results have good agreement with using physiological, patient and anatomical measurements. From the results of the present study, it is explained why traffic accidences easily take place on crossings. In the human brain visual cortex (V1), only a small cortical area is used to process visual information from the peripheral visual field. The basic results suggest that drivers are unable to recognise the dangerous information from both sides of peripheral vision. © 2008 International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences.

    Large-field visual stimulation with a rotating stimulus often induces the illusion of self-rotation, which is called circular vection (CV). Although CV has been extensively studied, the dependence of CV on the spatial frequency, luminance and visual-field of the visual stimulus remains unclear. In this paper, we investigated the luminance effects on visual perception of self-rotation. Fourteen young adult male volunteer subjects participated in the study. The device comprised a wide-view screen, a PC and a reaction key. The experimental stimuli were generated onto screen by PC. The sine-wave stimulus was rotated, and changed into five spatial frequencies (0.033, 0.053, 0.084, 0.130, and 0.210 cycle/deg) and six luminance conditions. The subjects reported the perceived CV velocity using the magnitude estimation method, and the latency of CV was defined as the time from the start of the stimulus to the onset of CV. These results may suggested that the CV to be more compelling when the spatial frequency from 0.053cycle/deg to 0.084 cycle/deg and high luminance of visual stimuli in central vision field. And the CV to be faster induced when the spatial frequency approximately 0.084 cycle/deg and high luminance of visual stimuli in central vision field.

    The study of optical illusion is an important method to elucidate the mechanism of visual perception. However, many details about the cause of optical illusions are still unclear. In this research, based on the characteristic of the physiological structure of the retina, we proposed an on-center receptive field model of the retina. Using this model, we simulated the distributions of the inducing field of some visual stimulus. Comparing to the past studies' results, the validity of the proposed model was proofed. Furthermore, we simulated the distributions of the inducing field of some typical illusions. The simulation results can explain these illusion phenomenon rationally. Therefore, it suggested that some of illusions are probably engendered by the distributions of the inducing field in the retina which generated by the illusions stimuli. The practicality of the proposed model was also verified.

    In the present study we mainly aimed to investigate the function of the inferior frontal gyrus, by means of passively listening to Japanese words, nonsense words, English words, nonsense words respectively by Japanese subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). English words and nonsense words activated the dorsal parts of bilateral inferior frontal cortex more extensive than Japanese words and nonsense words, which might imply the implicit silent repetition might take place during English stimuli listening for better perception. The ventral parts of left inferior frontal cortex were activated by Japanese and English words conditions than nonsense words conditions of the two languages confirms its function in lexical or semantic processing. We also found the activation of visual cortex by Japanese especially by the Japanese nonsense words than English, which may be correlated to the characteristic of Japanese in which the phoneme and grapheme are one-to-one mapping to some extent.

    This paper describes an approach to the measurement and analysis of Electroencephalogram (EEG) data to develop a brain- computer interface (BCI). The investigation of the serial information processing of human brain is very important for designing brain computer interfaces. Since EEG signals have a good temporal resolution and can be recorded noninvasively from the scalp, EEG has been used as a basic tool of the brain-computer interface. In this study, we measured EEG signals when subjects view, memorize, and recall the simple visual stimuli with directional information. As a result of the frequency analysis for the EEG signals, we found the task-related power change in particular cortical area. Based on this result, we discussed the information processing in the human visual systems and the applicability of the brain computer interface. ©2005 IEEE.

    In recent years, the remote control robots have used in various dangerous environments instead of human. Because there is a discrepancy between the physical and perceived distance, it is difficult for us to use the remote control robots. In order to solve this problem, we investigated the psychophysical characteristics of human distance perception. In this study, young and elder subjects estimate the actively and passively presented distance using upper arm.     The distance information is very important to operate a teleoperation robot in the teleoperation system. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to realize a distance man-machine interface, in order to present the distance information. Because the human perceptive distance is different from the actual distance, and also the spatial scale of the real world is different from the virtual world. Therefore, it is very important to measure and analyze human characteristic of distance perception for the man-machine interface of teleoperation systems. In this study, the characteristics of human distance perception are measured, and a mathematical model of human distance perception is proposed. The results suggested that the human perceptive distances are larger (smaller) than the actual distances, if with using (not using) tactile information. The experimental results provide useful basic data to design the distance interface of teleoperation systems, and to investigate the human mechanism of distance perception.

    In our previous study, a virtual catch-ball system was designed. The virtual catch ball system consists of pitch ball, catch ball and Head Mounted Display (HMD) subsystems. For the catch ball subsystem, the force display of simple structure, large movable area, high safety and low cost is required. Some kinds of force display systems were already proposed by other researches so far. However, the motion range of those force displays is considerably small, or the large mechanical parts are necessary to attain enough motion space. In this study, the authors proposed a following-type force display for the virtual catch-ball system. The force display consists of a force unit, a rotary motion unit and a vertical motion unit. The proposed force display can generate the force in the different directions of the vertical and the horizontal plane, and the merits of this system are large motion range, high safety and low cost. The performance of the proposed force display is demonstrated by several basic experiments. © 2000, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. All rights reserved.

    Virtual reality technology has been widely applied in telerobotics, sports training and so on. In the present paper, we consider a virtual catch-ball as an application of virtual reality. The virtual catch-ball system has three subsystems
    they are a pitch-ball subsystem, a catch-ball subsystem and HMD (Head Mounted Display) system with 3D images. We develop a force display of which structure was very simple. In the force display, the force is realized by a spring. Using the developed force display the human force perceptive characteristic on hand is measured. The experimental results suggested that human perceptive sensitilvity of force is depended on the hand position and the presented force volume. From the results of experiment, some important points are suggested to realize a force display with high performance. © 2000, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. All rights reserved.

    In the present paper, a spatial position sensor of new type for virtual catch ball system is proposed. In the virtual catch-ball system, it is necessary to obtain spatial positions of the ball and the glove. For such a spatial position sensor, requirements are not only low cost but also wide measurable area and low noise. Several spatial position sensors which have already been developed do not satisfy those requirements. The authors' newly designed spatial position sensor is of simple structure and attains the above goal. The static and the dynamic examinations were made on the characteristics of that sensor, and it was found that the sensor has desirable characteristics.     In the previous studies, the luminous-efficiency function for the mesopic vision is proposed by several empirical formulas, and some discrepancies between the experimental data and the formulated results existed. In the present paper, we propose a model of the equivalent luminous-efficiency function based on the brightness perception which covers the scotopic, the mesopic and the photopic conditions. In order to realize the equivalent luminous-efficiency function, we construct a four layer neural network model. The neural network is composed of three parts : an input layer, two hidden layers and an output layer. This neural network model is trained by the back-propagation learning algorithm with use of training data obtained by psychological experiments. After completion of learning, the response functions of the two hidden units express the scotopic and the photopic coefficients functions which depend on the input light-intensity level. The analysis of the model output indicates that our neural network has acquired an excellent generalization capability. That is, the model of the equivalent luminous-efficiency function has a nice generalization capability in the scotopic, the mesopic and the photopic conditions. The analysis results of internal representation in the neural network model suggested that the scotopic coefficient function contribute to brightness at a larger range.

    Working memory has important role in daily life and a lot of research was done in visual or auditory information. However, tactile working memory was unclear indeed. So we did research for tactile working memory capacity using n-back task for young and elder subjects. The experimental stimulus was raised shape of four directions 'V'. The subjects recognized these shapes by index finger. Next, subjects compared the current stimuli with the n times back stimuli. Subjects then responded whether the direction of a stimulus is the same or different. As a result, there was a significant difference between young and elder subjects in accuracy. We presume that these results depend on aging effect of a working memory capacity and decline of the recognition capability. The next step to find property is measurement of brain activity for tactile n-back task.

    Since Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disease, the altered cognitive symptoms in the very early stage of AD involve mild learning, memory or planning problems. Eventually, AD patients will lose their ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living when in the later severe stage. Currently, no medical tests are available to diagnose AD conclusively pre-mortem. The goal of our research is to confirm the preclinical cognitive markers of AD with neuropsychological approach used for AD early detection.

    Interaction occurs in brain when human gets stimuli from different sensory organs such as visual and auditory. Previous behavioral studies have shown that bimodal audiovisual stimuli simultaneously can be discriminated or detected more rapidly and accurately than unimodal visual or auditory stimuli presented alone. Many studies have shown that temporal asynchrony of audio-visual stimuli can influence the integration between visual and auditory stimulus, however, the multisensory mechanisms of asynchrony inputs were not well understood. In this study, we measured the behavioral and EEG data when the visual and auditory stimuli onset asynchrony were presented in the screen. This was done for each of the five different 50-ms subranges of stimulus onset asynchrony. Behavioral results showed that reaction times to the asynchrony audiovisual stimuli were faster that the unimodal stimulus. Moreover, the interaction of the asynchrony input was verified from event related potentials (ERPs). Especially, the results showed that the effect on EEG component around 200ms was largest when visual was presented after the auditory stimuli. This result suggested that might reflect the processing or adjusting for the temporal alignment of audiovisual stimuli.

    Reading in a second language (L2) is a complex task that involves an interaction between L2 and the native language (LI). To investigate the fundamental mechanisms, this study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to visualize Japanese-Chinese bilinguals' brain activity in semantic processing of Chinese and Japanese characters, whose form are similar. We asked 13 Japanese-Chinese bilinguals to judge whether or not a presented pair of Chinese or Japanese characters had same semantics or font size. Semantic and orthographic association judgments were made to a pair of two-character words that were presented sequentially in the visual modality. In an fMRI experiment, we found Japanese-Chinese bilinguals showed activation in middle occipital gyrus in Japanese. And we also found they showed activation in left middle/inferior frontal gyrus which were known to be associated with semantic processing, left supplementary motor area which was known to solve language conflict on semantic tasks in Chinese. These findings were not consistent with previous studies that language experience tuned the cortex. But we found language conflict happened in Chinese task. This finding suggests language conflict affected Chinese task, and we think our fMRI experiment results changed from original results because of language conflict. So we think we need to remove language conflict when we conduct an fMRI experiment for bilinguals.

    In present study, we developed a tactile speed patterns presentation device that is capable of perform the tactile speed perception and discrimination experiments. It can serve to determining the underlying central neural mechanisms that contribute to tactile speed perception and discrimination. The device consists of two dots stimulus discs, one stepping motor, one motor controller and one computer. We used energy from the stepping motor to rotate the dots stimulus discs to present the different tactile speeds. The information related to rotating speed and time will be recorded with the computer. Then, five healthy subjects were asked to conduct a tactile speed estimation experiment using present device. The results indicated that the subjects underestimate the perceived tactile speed compare to the standard speed.

    In present study, we developed a pointing movement experimental device with visual feedback control function that is capable of perform the cognitive psychological procedure relate to own hand movements. It can serve to determining the human characteristics of pointing movement with or without visual feedback restriction. The main part of present device consists of a touch monitor, one set of light control glass, a relay switch electric circuit and computer. The subjects can do the pointing movement on the touch monitor and the visual feedback restriction will carry out with a combination of light control glass and relay switch. Finally, we performed a vision restricted pointing movement task with lateral ocular. The results suggest that although the visual feedback was restricted, the pointing movement depend on the index difficulty of targets.

    Function segregation in the left inferior frontal gyrus was investigated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment using a passive listening task, in which Japanese volunteers were required to passively listen to words and nonsense words in Japanese and English. The statistical analysis results showed that the dorsal part of the left inferior frontal gyrus was more extensively activated by listening to English words and nonsense words than to those of Japanese, respectively, which suggests automatic articulatory representation access for non-native stimuli perception, and that the ventral part was more extensively activated by listening to English and Japanese words than to nonsense words in either language, which suggests a lexical or semantic processing function.

    In the paper, we propose a multi-aspect data mining process for investigating a more whole human information process mechanism systematically. As an example to demonstrate the proposed mining process, we explain how to design the experiments of an ERP mental arithmetic task with visual stimuli for investigating human computation centric information processing mechanism, and describe how to do multi-aspect analysis in the obtained ERP data, respectively. Furthermore, we give some preliminary results to show the usefulness of our methodology and to discuss the future research directions. © 2007 IEEE.

    Visual orienting attention has been researched thoroughly using visual cues, and spatial attention and temporal attention have been compared using brain-imaging data [1]. However, while several studies have reported on auditory attention, the attention was not oriented using a cue. In addition, fewer studies have compared spatial and temporal attention using auditory stimuli. We compared visual and auditory orienting attention using a visual cue. We asked whether a general system exists for auditory spatial and temporal attention that conforms to that of visual spatial and temporal attention. We measured brain activity in 16 healthy volunteers using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The attention was manipulated spatially and temporally using a visual cue for both visual and auditory tasks in a factorial design. Symbolic central cues oriented the subjects toward spatial location only (left or right), toward the temporal interval only (300 or 1800 ms), or gave no information about the spatial location or temporal interval. The subjects were also scanned under a resting basetine condition during which they clicked the reaction key ten times. Behavioral data showed the same tendency in visual and auditory tasks. The reaction time for spatial location attention was faster than that for temporal interval attention. The brain-imaging data showed a partial overlap between visual spatial attention and auditory spatial attention. In addition, it revealed a partial overlap between the neural systems involved in the performance of visual spatial attention versus visual temporal attention. The parietal and frontal cortices were activated in both the visual and auditory spatial attention tasks. The parietal cortex was activated in the visual temporal attention task only and not in the auditory temporal task. ©2007 IEEE.

Therefore, Japanese better facilitates the separation of underlying cognitive components in spoken language processing, e.g., phonemes, combinations of phonemes, and words with meanings. In this study, we measured the brain activities of subjects by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as they were passively listening to a series of words (word condition), combinations of phonemes without meanings (nonsense word condition), and temporally separated KANAs (separated KANA condition). The three conditions all activated the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, while the detailed location and volume of activated areas varied across the three kinds of stimuli. Listening to the words and separated KANAs activated more areas than did listening to the nonsense words, perhaps owing to different familiarity levels; areas activated in the separated KANA condition were slightly posterior to those activated in the word and nonsense word conditions. Compared with the nonsense word and separated KANA conditions, the word condition also activated part of the right primary motor cortex and part of the left premotor cortex, which may be related to articulatory-gestural representations of word access. There were no obvious areas activated in the anterior STG and STS, which have been related to semantic representations of words.

    Retinotopic mapping is one of the most important experimental procedures in brain mapping the human visual system. Due to technical problems in previous studies applying fMRI retinotopy on human subjects, which typically used a central and/or pericentral visual field stimulus (8-30 deg of eccentricity from the fixation point), retinotopic characteristics of peripheral vision in humans are still unclear. To overcome this obstacle, we developed the wide-view visual presentation system with a horizontal visual angle of 120 deg and a vertical angle of 120 deg using nonmagnetic optical fibers and contact lens for fMRI. In this paper, we introduce the functions and performance of this system and report the results of our evaluative experiment. © 2007 IEEE.

    We are especially interested in the human ability to recognize shape using the delayed matching paradigm in active and passive touch studies. To investigate the characteristics of shape recognition, stimulus presentation control is very important because a subtle difference in the stimulus presentation will influence the results. In this study, we propose a new device that precisely controls the stimulus presentation and performs psychobehavioral measurements in haptics studies. And we also conducted an active/passive shape discrimination experiment to evaluate the performance of the device. Twenty right-handed students consented to participate in the experiment. The results suggest that the device might serve as a comprehensive haptic device that allows different types of haptic stimuli to be presented precisely to subjects to measure various psychobehavioral parameters. © 2007 IEEE.

    Audiovisual early integration was investigated in humans using behavioral and electrophysiological measures in the attending one-modality (visual/auditory) condition to determine whether audiovisual early integration occurs when one modality is attended. Visual, auditory, and audiovisual stimuli were presented randomly with equal probability. The subjects were instructed to press a button in response to an infrequent target stimulus (20%) in the attend-designated modality. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy were recorded and were compared using paired t-tests. The event-related potentials (ERPs) to bimodal stimuli (AV) were compared with the sum of the ERPs to unimodal auditory (A) and visual (V) stimuli. The early integration process was expressed as the difference waveform. between AV and (A+V). Audiovisual early integration (P100) of the bimodal audiovisual stimuli was found in the scalp topographies in the attending auditory condition; moreover, the RTs to the bimodal audiovisual target stimuli were faster than the RTs to the unimodal auditory target stimuli. By contrast, in the attending visual condition, audiovisual early integration (P100) of the bimodal audiovisual stimuli was not found in the scalp topographies, and no significant RT difference was observed between the unimodal visual and bimodal audiovisual target stimuli.

    We tested the ability of human listeners to discriminate white noise bursts in the absence of binaural discrimination cues and changed the shape of spectral cues. Minimum audible angle (MAA) thresholds were determined for five subjects in a two-alternative, forced-choice, adaptive paradigm as a function of the orientation of the array of sound sources in the vertical plane (elevation). The subjects were students with normal hearing who wore a monaural earplug to reduce sound level and timing cues and were then fitted with a pinna mold to change the shape of spectral cues. Tests measured discrimination of the vertical angle in eight planes parallel to the median plane (00 position). The results showed that the sound source position could be discriminated in the vertical plane when a subject with normal monaural hearing wore the external ear model. However, the discrimination ability worsened remarkably. The ability to discriminate the orientation of sound sources in the lower hemi-field was greater than in the upper hemi-field at the 00 to 1800 reference positions, while the reverse was true for the 2250 to 3150 reference positions. In addition, the pinna cavities of both the near and far ears play a role in determining the perceived vertical angle of a sound source in any horizontal position, including the median plane. As a sound source shifts laterally away from the median plane, the contribution of the near ear increases, while that of the far ear decreases. For horizontal positions at azimuths greater than 180 degrees from the midline, the far ear mold no longer changes the shape of spectral cues for discriminating the vertical angle.

    We tested the ability of human listeners to discriminate white noise bursts in the absence of binaural discrimination cues and changed the shape of spectral cues. Minimum audible angle (MAA) thresholds were determined for five subjects in a two-alternative, forced-choice, adaptive paradigm as a function of the orientation of the array of sound sources in the vertical plane (elevation). The subjects were students with normal hearing who wore a monaural earplug to reduce sound level and timing cues and were then fitted with a pinna mold to change the shape of spectral cues.     Audiovisual early integration was investigated in humans using behavioral and electrophysiological measures in the attending one-modality (visual/auditory) condition to determine whether audiovisual early integration occurs when one modality is attended. Visual, auditory, and audiovisual stimuli were presented randomly with equal probability. The subjects were instructed to press a button in response to an infrequent target stimulus (20%) in the attend-designated modality. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy were recorded and were compared using paired t-tests. The event-related potentials (ERPs) to bimodal stimuli (AV) were compared with the sum of the ERPs to unimodal auditory (A) and visual (V) stimuli. The early integration process was expressed as the difference waveform. between AV and (A+V). Audiovisual early integration (P100) of the bimodal audiovisual stimuli was found in the scalp topographies in the attending auditory condition; moreover, the RTs to the bimodal audiovisual target stimuli were faster than the RTs to the unimodal auditory target stimuli. By contrast, in the attending visual condition, audiovisual early integration (P100) of the bimodal audiovisual stimuli was not found in the scalp topographies, and no significant RT difference was observed between the unimodal visual and bimodal audiovisual target stimuli.

    Although many cognitive and brain scientists have already studied human information processing mechanism of auditory and visual, separately, the relevance between auditory and visual information processing needs to be investigated in depth. We investigate human multi-perception mechanism by combining various psychological experiments, physiological measurements, data cleaning, modeling, transformation and mining techniques for developing artificial systems which match human ability in specific aspects. In particular, we observe fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) brain activations from the view point of peculiarity oriented mining and propose a way of peculiarity oriented mining for knowledge discovery in multiple human brain data. We present an interesting result on modeling, transforming, and mining multiple human brain data obtained from visual and auditory psychological experiments by using the fMRI. The proposed methodology attempts to change the perspective of cognitive scientists from a single type of experimental data analysis towards a holistic view. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.     我々の従来研究では, 人間の視聴覚相互関連特性を明らかにするために, 視覚情報として視覚探索を聴覚情報として暗算問題を用いた計算課題を一斉に呈示した場合にこれらの情報処理特性を測定した結果, 聴覚情報が視覚情報処理に影響を及ぼしていることが明らかにされている.そこで本論文では視覚刺激と聴覚刺激の両刺激とも, 暗算問題を用いた計算課題としたときの視聴覚間の相互情報処理特性を測定することで, 視覚刺激として視覚探索課題を用いたときの実験結果との比較検討を行った.その結果, 聴覚情報が視覚情報処理に影響を及ぼしているという同一結果を得た.さらに, 視覚情報が聴覚情報処理に影響を及ぼしていることも分かった.

    医療福祉機器の製作や高質感製品の創出では、手触りだけで形状・質感を知覚できるロボットハンド技術が21世紀の高齢化社会と製品の高品質化に強く求められている。しかし、手による医療福祉行為や触覚品質の評価は医者・職人の経験や主観的手触り感覚の判断に頼っているのが現状で、形状・質感を知覚できるロボットハンド技術はまだ確立されていない。 本国際共同研究では,分担者らが従来までに米国衛生研究所(NIH)と中国北京理工大学(BIT)との共同研究で得た触覚脳機能と知能ロボットの成果を発展させて、触覚感知脳内モデルを構築して形状・質感を知覚できる知能ロボットハンドに適用展開する。
    本研究では,分担者らがこれまでに得た触覚認知脳機能に関する知見と応用成果を発展させて、手触り感覚脳内モデルを同定して形状・質感を知覚できるロボットハンドに適用する。さらに、本国際共同研究は基礎的かつ総合的研究であり、若手研究者も参画して触覚感知脳内モデルの構築と知能ロボットハンドへの適用を対象とするため、国際的な研究ネットワークと新学際領域の形成に貢献できる。
    実施状況については、まず、人間の手触り感覚の脳内モデルを同定するため、高空間分解能と高精度の触覚実験装置を製作した。また、独自に製作した触覚実験装置を用いて、認知心理学、EEG実験およびfMRI実験を行い、形状・質感を知覚できるモデルを研究している。
    これらの成果は雑誌論文5件(Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience 1件, Experimental Brain Research 1件, Perception 1件, Heliyon 1件, Journal of Neurophysiology 1件)に掲載され、学会発表9件で発表された。

    実施状況については、まず、空気圧駆動、fMRI高磁場環境で使用できる材料の厳選などの技術を用いて高精度触覚刺激装置と高解像度脳画像取得デバイスを研究開発した。それから、独自製作の高空間分解能と高精度の触覚実験装置を用いて認知心理学実験、EEG実験とfMRI実験による手触り感覚の脳機能マッピング実験を実施した。さらに、ダブル循環式測定法によるfMRI機能脳画像と脳解剖学の知見を統合としたアプローチを用いて、人間の手触り感覚の脳内モデルの同定を推進している。最終年度の形状・質感認知できるロボットハンドへの適用に向けて、諸準備を進行している。
    これらの研究成果は雑誌論文5件をそれぞれFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, Experimental Brain Research, Perception, Heliyon, Journal of Neurophysiology国際誌に掲載され、学術会議では9件を発表した。

    IT化が急速に進展し,VDT( Visual Display Terminals) が広く職場や学校に導入されて使用者が急速に増大する状況の中,VDT作業の継続による眼精疲労,視力低下,肉体的・精神的疲労が大きな社会問題になっている.対策として,厚生労働省によりVDT作業ガイドラインが定められているが,VDT作業が与える視機能等への悪影響の様態と理由の詳細については未解明で,機能回復のための有効な方法は未だ確立されていない.
    本研究は,眼科疾患のないVDT作業者と若年者に両眼立体視不全が起きやすい事実を,視覚機能に異変が生じるためと捉え,これまで見落とされてきた視覚の根本的機能である「両眼立体視」・「視覚―運動協応」に焦点を当てて,VDT作業が与える負の影響の様態と発生メカニズムを行動学的,認知科学的手法を用いて究明し,機能回復方法を見いだすことを目的に行うものである.
    これまで10代,20代,および40代以上の各年代の合計677名の被験者についてOPUS-IIを用いた両眼立体視能力の測定を行った結果,両眼立体視不全者の割合は,40代以上では25%程度だったのに対し,10代,20代についてはいずれも6割近い被験者が不正解となり,10代,20代の若年者に両眼立体視不全の可能性があることが明らかとなった.
    次に両眼立体視に影響を及ぼす単眼奥行き手がかりと奥行き認識能力,および奥行き弁別能力について調べた.奥行き弁別能力はOPUS-IIの正解者,不正解者の間に有意な差は見られなかった.単眼奥行き手がかりが異なる画像に対する奥行きの認識能力に差が見られたため,さらに詳細な解析を行っている.両眼立体画像視聴時の眼球運動についても測定を行っている.
    さらに20名あまりの被験者について斜位や視能力について詳細に検査を行い,奥行き立体視能力との関係を調べている.

    認知症は記憶障害を主な症状とする高次脳機能の疾患であるが、現時点では認知症を完全に 治す薬がなく、症状の進行を食い止めるための非薬物的な早期治療が極めて重要である。しか し、認知症早期治療技術がまだ確立されていないのが現状である。本研究では、申請者らの脳 機能ネットワークの解明とニューロフィードバックと経頭蓋直流電気刺激による早期 治療に関する最新成果を活かして、高磁場環境で使用できる実験装置を独自に研究開発し、認 知実験、脳波とfMRIを併用する手法によって、記憶・想起の脳機能ネットワークを解明し、認 知症の早期治療モデルを提案する。さらに、早期治療の臨床実験によって認知症の早期治療モ デルの有効性を検証し、記憶・想起の脳機能ネットワークに基づく視覚・聴覚・触覚の多感覚 ニューロフィードバックを用いた認知症早期治療システムを構築する
    実施状況については、まず、記憶・想起の脳機能ネットワークの解明と認知症早期治療システムを研究するため、視覚、聴覚及び触覚の認知記憶脳機能解明の実験タスクを考案した。得られた認知心理学の離散データ、脳波の波形データとfMRI画像データについて多変量・独立成分分析などの手法を用いて実験結果を解析して認知記憶の脳機能ネットワークを解明した。さらに、認知症患者の臨床実験の実施とデータ解析を行って、記憶・想起の脳機能ネットワークに基づく視覚・聴覚・触覚の多感覚ニューロフィードバックを用いた認知症早期治療システムを構築している。
    これらの成果は雑誌論文5件(Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience 1件, Experimental Brain Research 1件, Perception1件, Heliyon 1件, Journal of Neurophysiology 1件)に掲載され、学会発表9件で発表された。

    本研究の主な成果として,1)指紋微小振動の直接観察システムの開発の成功,2)凹凸刺激に対する指紋微小振動と表面手触り感の相互関係の評価,3)ヒトの第一体性感覚野における触覚振動検出の神経基盤の検討の3項目があげられ,概ね計画当初の目標を達成している。また,本研究の実施により,従来が困難と言われた指紋微小振動の精密な動的特性の観察・計測が実現できたと同時に,指紋微小振動・触感の心理的評価・触感の脳内処理ネットワークの関係解析への発展も期待できる。

    DCRAデバイスによって写像される空中画像は空中に静止していて指で検査できるため、触覚刺激と組み合わせるのに適している。 本研究では、高速に移動できる透明パネルを使用して、それを空中画像に重ねたり外したりする触覚刺激法を開発した。 この方式では、任意の位置で指に触覚刺激を与えることができる。
    空中画像と空中タッチ刺激の組み合わせに対する人の知覚を調べた。 位置、形状、およびテクスチャの認識は可能であることがわかった。情報チャネルを追加する効果的な方法として、複雑な医療情報の評価を含む多くの分野で活用できると分かった。 また、エンターテインメントやゲームでの商業利用の可能性も見えています。

    ロボットに人間らしく振り舞う、といった脳と心の部分の開発は、あまり行われていない。本研究では、「アドバンスド知能」と、これまで開発された「心的状態遷移ネットワーク」を発展させ、深層学習を活かした進化的脳・心を持つロボットを創造した。
    進化的ロボットを構築するため、まず、ロボット自身が学習機能を持たなければならない。本研究では、まず、心的状態遷移ネットワークに基づく心の創造を行った。次に、開発したビッグデータをもとに、アドバンスド知能を活かし、脳の創造を行った。アドバンスド知能は代表者により提唱された新しい概念で、簡単に言えば、人工知能と自然知能を共に感情も考慮した新しいパラダイムである。

    認知症の根本治療薬が研究開発の段階であり、認知症の進行を食い止めるためには、認知症の早期診断が必要不可欠である。認知症の早期診断は非常に難しくその早期臨床診断技術がまだ確立されていないのが現状である。
    本研究では、認知記憶の脳機能に注目して、高磁場環境で使用できる実験装置を独自に研究開発し、認知実験、脳波(EEG)と機能的磁気共鳴画像(fMRI)の統合的手法を用いて、認知記憶の脳機能ネットワークと認知症の認知モデルを提案した。さらに、これらの研究開発の成果に基づいて、健康高齢者、軽度認知障害者と認知症患者を対象とする臨床実験を実施して、認知症の早期診断システムを研究開発した。

    認知症は高次脳機能障害であり、その早期診断はアンケート式の問診だけに止まり、早期診断の技術およびその国際基準がまだ確立されていない。
    本計画では、代表者らの今までの認知症早期診断に関する研究成果を生かして、早期診断に関する最先端研究状況の海外調査と実験装置と客観的検査方法の研究開発を行う。それから、開発した実験装置と客観的測定方法を活用し、認知検査、脳波の波形診断と機能的脳画像診断の統合手法を用いて国際的臨床実験を実施する。 最後に、認知症早期診断の最先端国際状況の海外調査研究の結果と、開発した実験装置・客観的検査方法および臨床実験との結果に基づいて、認知症早期診断の国際基準を提案する。

  • 高齢者における脳磁気刺激法を用いた効果的な運動・認知機能訓練法の開発

    正常成人8名において最大筋収縮時磁気刺激による約40分間の運動訓練を行い、その前後でウェクスラー成人知能検査の数字の順唱と逆唱、図形記憶テスト、運動誘発電位、つまみ筋力および多感覚刺激事象関連電位(ERP)の測定を実施した。結果、偽刺激群に対して実刺激群では、刺激前に対して刺激後に数字の逆唱の点数が有意に増加し(p<0.05)、つまみ筋力も増強する傾向があった。ERPの多感覚認知に関連する電位は両群間で差がなかったが、ERP各成分については更なる検討を必要とする。以上から、最大筋収縮時磁気刺激は筋力と言語性記憶能力を向上させる可能性が示唆された。

    共同研究者,海外の認知症関連研究者と連絡を取って,認知症に関する認知実験などの実験結果の収集,検討を行い,特に健康高齢者と認知症患者の間の触覚の認知機能の差が,認知症の早期診断に有効であるという結果を得た.この結果と本研究で構築したネットワークを元に,国際的な大規模実験に向けての準備をすすめることができた.

    平成17年〜19年の間、人間の多感覚(視覚、聴覚と触覚)認知と高次機能(注意、記憶、言語)の基礎課題について認知心理学実験、脳波(EEG)と機能的磁気共鳴画像(fMRI)の手法を用いて研究を行ってきた。さらに、基礎研究成果に基づいて認知症早期診断システムへの適用を検討してきた。得られた主な研究成果は下記のとおりである。
    視覚特性としては空間注意特性実験と動体視野特性の加齢効果実験を実施して、注意機能の視力依存性と高齢者の動体視野の減少が明らかにされた。聴覚特性としては耳栓の遮音による音源定位実験とマスキング効果による音源検出能力実験を実施して、高齢者の音源定位能力とマスキング効果が明確された。触覚特性としては長さ知覚実験と角度弁別実験を実施して関連特性が定量化された。これらの多感覚モダリティの認知心理学実験の成果は脳波実験とfMRI実験の設計と、痴呆症早期診断システムの設計に基礎データを提供している。
    認知心理学実験の結果を考慮して視覚と聴覚の注意相関特性について、脳波実験を実施し視聴覚分割注意に統合メカニズムが存在することは実証された。さらに、視聴覚の選択注意機能と聴覚による言語処理機能については、fMRI実験を実施した。認知心理学実験の離散量、脳波信号の波形と磁気共鳴画像などの実験データを統一基準に変換し多変量解析を行った。解析結果により、注意機能の脳内表現と言語処理の意味と音声処理の機能分離に成功した。
    以上の視覚、聴覚および触覚の多感覚の認知心理学実験、脳波実験、fMRI実験データとその解析結果に基づいて、視聴覚の方向注意モデル、指の能動・受動による触覚パターン知覚モデル、言語処理モデルを提案した。さらに、視覚、聴覚と触覚検査刺激がそれぞれ小型ディスプレイ、ヘッドホン、触覚デバイスを通じて被検者に呈示される実験装置を製作し多感覚の諸検査による認知症の早期診断システムを考案した。

    1.聴覚情報(声)による人物同定に関する神経システムを研究するために,機能的MRIを用いて脳の賦活領域を調べた.実験結果から,知らないヒトの声に対し,親しいヒトの声に対する反応は側頭極(BA38),上側頭回(BA22/39),帯状回GC後部(BA23/29),及び前頭葉内側面(BA10)では強い反応が見られる.
    2.人間の顔などのパターン認識において,主観輪郭線などの錯視特性は深く関係していると言われている.本研究では,非対称な図形の主観輪郭知覚特性を定量的に研究し,その特性の数理モデルを提案した.
    3.身振り特性を検討するため,実験装置を作成し,全身協応運動を用いた課題における予測時間と動作時間の関係を明らかにした.実験結果によって,(1)動作時間は視覚情報の影響を受けていない,(2)自己の動作時間と予測時間との関係は予測時間のほうが小さく見積られている,(3)予測時間は視標速度からの依存性の影響を受けておらず、視標速度の減少に伴って予測時間が増加することなどのことはわかった.
    4.視覚,聴覚および触覚の脳高次機能のfMRI実験を実施するため,開発した高磁場環境下における実験装置を用いて,触覚長さ知覚の認知とfMRI実験を実施した.実験結果から,触覚長さ認知は,高次視覚情報処理領域と言語情報処理領域に深く関係していることが判明した.これらの結果は,人間の触覚情報処理と人物同定メカニズムの解明に有効な基礎データを提供し,下記の仮説を確認できた.1)人間は触覚による長さ認知の際に,触覚心内表象(Tactile mental image)を用いて対象物体を視覚的に捉えている,2)触覚による長さ認知には言語的判断が伴う(言語情報処理領域と関係する),3)触覚のみによる長さ認知であるため,手指に注意を集中し,繰り返し判断が行われる.

    1.ドライビングシミュレータ(DS)の開発
    実車のコクピットとバーチャルリアリティ(VR)技術を利用した道路環境提示装置と生体情報計測装置から成り立ち,運転中のドライバの生体機能とブレーキ,アクセルの踏力,タイミング,ステアリング角度等が計測できる.
    2.生体機能と運転行動の相関関係について
    ドライバの認知,判断,運動に関する諸機能の基礎特性と危険状態における回避行動の関係について,個人差,年齢差を含め調べた.危険状態はDSのVRで提示し,どのような身体機能の低下がどのような危険状態を招くか,その傾向と特長を明らかにした.
    3.メンタルワークロードの定量化方法について
    視覚情報による運転中に,聴覚情報としての会話の運転に与える影響を明らかにするために,会話内容の定量化を試みた.負荷としての会話内容には難易度と関心度があるが,本研究ではドライバの関心度で分類した結果,脳波のα波の減少率,眼球運動状態,運転操作の不確実などと深い相関があることが明らかとなった.
    4.疲労,居眠り等の意識低下検知方法の開発
    顔画像から眼領域を抽出し,上下まぶたのまばたきの変化(開度の変化)から検知する.周囲の照度変化,眼鏡・サングラスへの対処できる撮像技術と画像処理技術を開発した.個人差の影響を排除するため,まばたきの開始点と終了点を安定に求める方法を開発した.
    5.脇見の検知および不注視の検知方法の開発
    脇見の検知は,顔の方向と視線の方向および視線の停留時間を画像処理で求める方法を開発した.思考集中による不注視の検知は,視線の2次元の動きから求める方法を開発した.
    6.視聴覚情報のメカニズムの解明
    視聴覚情報が同時に並列に入力されたとき,視覚反応時間は視覚刺激の難易度による影響が弱いが,聴覚刺激による難易度の影響は強い.計算問題における高次脳機能のメカニズムは機能的磁気共鳴画像法を用い計測した結果,視聴覚とも同様な計算処理過程であることが分かった.
    7.多感覚認知機能と運動学習の関連について
    脳の陰性緩電位の変化から,運動の方向と強さを決定するためには,視覚情報が重要であり,前回の運動を修正し次回の適切な運動を決定するためには,前回の運動時の体性感覚の記憶が必要であり,この過程は運動学習の過程と一致する.

    現在は日本も高齢社会であり、バリアフリーやユニバーサルデザイン等の言葉に代表されるように社会全体として福祉のことを考えるべき時代である。しかし、現状の福祉設備は、自宅の中や公共施設の中だけで閉じた環境内の設備であり、一歩、外に出るとその連続性は失われてしまう。また、高齢者・障碍者の生活様式も多岐に渡り、既存の家屋に対しても自然に導入できる福祉システムであることが望ましい。そのような背景のもとで、我々は車いす自動走行システムの構築を通して、安全・安心を感じるひとの特性の解析や移動支援機器・介護支援機器などを総合的に捉えた福祉システムのあり方を考えた。
    より安全・安心を提供できる車いすの自動走行システムを構築するためには、ひとの特性の分析は不可欠である。そこで、本研究では、ひとが車いすを操作するときの視線移動と安心感の関連性、ひとの視覚探索に関する特性の解析、聴覚と運動感覚の相関特性、視覚情報と聴覚情報が同時に提示されたときの脳の働き、遠隔操作における距離感の把握についてなどの研究を行った。
    また、本システムを福祉システムとしての運用面から考えると、個々の建物のみに留まらず、社会全体、すなわち「街づくり」としての観点からも捉えるべきである。そこで、我々は、既存の家屋に対する車いすの適用状態を調べるとともに、住んでいる街をより良く知るためにタウンウォッチング手法なども取り入れ、社会全体の福祉システムのあり方を検討した。さらに、移動支援機器である車いす自動走行システムと介護支援機器としての自律移動ロボット等の連携も考え、より省力・安全・安心を提供できる総合福祉システムの検討も行った。
    以上より、搭乗者の安全・安心を提供する車いす自動走行システムを提唱し、社会(我々や介護をする家族・ヘルパとの関係も含む)と高齢者・障碍者との間を取り持つ総合福祉システムとしての運用方法を提案した。
