    Traditionally, the DM process under uncertainty was explored using the DM paradigm to choose one from two or more alternatives, and human’s irrational DM was modeled using a variety of cognitive biases such as certainty effect or common ratio effect. However, until now, no attempt has been made to generalize such a DM process. Moreover, there are many cases where it is difficult to choose one of the two alternatives. When the preference of each alternative is nearly equal, it is difficult to make decision on which alternative to take. This forces us to loose important information that is necessary for investigating more detailed characteristics of DM process. In such a case, it is recommended that the preference for each alternative should be expressed numerically. Such an evaluation of alternatives has not been tried until now. This study attempted to propose a new approach to decision making process to get more into the insight of the DM process.

    Although it is clear that we must satisfy both economy and safety, we sometimes place more emphasis on economy than safety, which leads to a critical disaster or crash. The reason must be identified for the further enhancement of safety. This study explored why one cannot satisfy both economy and safety. We attempted to explain the reason using the collapse model of proper balance between safety and economy (efficiency) induced by the following cognitive biases: (i) mental accounting, (ii) loss aversion, and (iii) discount of safety. The measure or remedy of this collapse of the proper balance between safety and economy (efficiency) was proposed as (a) disclosure system, (b) commitment approach to safety, and (c) mechanism design.

    A warning signal presented via a visual or an auditory cue might interfere with auditory or visual information inside and outside a vehicle. On the other hand, such interference would be certainly reduced if a tactile cue is used. Therefore, it is expected that tactile cues would be promising as warning signals, especially in a noisy environment. In order to determine the most suitable modality of cue (warning) to a visual hazard in noisy environments, auditory and tactile cues were examined in this study. The condition of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) was set to Oms, 500ms, and 1000ms. Two types of noises were used: white noise and noise outside a vehicle recorded in a real-world driving environment. The noise level LA(eq), (equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level) inside the experimental chamber of each type of noise was adjusted to approximately 60 dB (A), 70 dB (A), and 80 dB (A). As a result, it was verified that tactile warning was more effective than auditory warning. When the noise outside a vehicle from a real-driving environment was used as the noise inside the experimental chamber, the reaction time to the auditory warning was not affected by the noise level.     This study proposed a procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of virtual crash using a control chart methodology for behavioural measures during a simulated driving task. Tracking error, human back pressure, sitting pressure and horizontal and vertical neck bending angles were measured during the simulated driving task. The time with a high risk of a virtual crash occurred in 9 out of 10 participants. The time interval between the successfully detected point in time with high risk of virtual crash and the point in time of virtual crash ranged from 80 to 324 s. The proposed procedure for predicting the point in time with a high risk of a crash is promising for warning drivers of the state of high risk of crash.Practitioner Summary: Many fatal crashes occur due to drowsy driving. We proposed a method to predict the point in time with high risk of virtual crash before such a virtual crash occurs. This is done using behavioural measures during a simulated driving task. The effectiveness of the method is also demonstrated.

    It is generally assumed that the interruption (break) of positive (comfortable) or negative (uncomfortable) experiences disrupt adaptation and consequently intensify the subsequent positive or negative experience. Therefore, it can be speculated that interrupting a consumption experience makes comfortable experiences more delightful and interruption of uncomfortable and painful experience makes this more irritating. This study aimed at verifying this irrational behavior in adaptation process. The comfortable and uncomfortable experiences were an experience of relaxing massage and that of immersing one's hand in the cold water. It was explored how the interruptive experience of positive (comfortable) or negative (uncomfortable) stimulus disrupt adaptation and intensify subsequent experience as compared with the continuous experience of the same stimuli (experience of the stimulus by bulk). This was investigated as a function of experience time A (comfort stimulus: 300 and 600 s, discomfort stimulus: 50 and 150 s) and duration of interruption B (30, 60, and 90 s for both comfort and discomfort).

    Objective: This study aimed at identifying and predicting in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident before a virtual accident actually occurs using the change of behavioral measures and subjective rating on drowsiness over time and the trend analysis of each behavioral measure.
    Methods: Behavioral measures such as neck bending angle and tracking error in steering maneuvering during the simulated driving task were recorded under the low arousal condition of all participants who stayed up all night without sleeping. The trend analysis of each evaluation measure was conducted using a single regression model where time and each measure of drowsiness corresponded to an independent variable and a dependent variable, respectively. Applying the trend analysis technique to the experimental data, we proposed a method to predict in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident (in a real-world driving environment, this corresponds to a crash) before the point in time when the participant would have encountered a crucial accident if he or she continued driving a vehicle (we call this the point in time of a virtual accident).
    Results: On the basis of applying the proposed trend analysis method to behavioral measures, we found that the proposed approach could predict in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident before the point in time of a virtual accident.
    Conclusion: The proposed method is a promising technique for predicting in advance the time zone with potentially high risk (probability) of being involved in an accident due to drowsy driving and for warning drivers of such a drowsy and risky state.

    The ocular movement characteristics to LED lights with high luminous intensity were explored when viewing such LED lights using a belt conveyer equipped with such LED light with high luminous intensity. The ocular movement characteristics such as blink duration, blink frequency, and PERCLOS70 were investigated as a function of LED color and luminous intensity. The blink duration consistently tended to increase with the increase of luminous intensity for all colors of LED. The blink frequency tended to increase under the high luminous intensity for both red and white LED which have higher wavelength. As for green LED, the blink frequency was not affected by the luminous intensity. Contrary to the case of red and white LED, the blink frequency of blue LED tended to decrease under the high luminous intensity. PERCLOS70 of red, white, and green LEDs tended to increase with the increase of luminous intensity. In this manner, the ocular movement characteristics of blue LED could be indicated.

    The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of physiological and behavioral evaluation measures for predicting a drivers' subjective drowsiness based on a multinomial logistic regression model. The participants were required to steer a steering wheel and keep their vehicle to the centerline as much as they could, and to maintain the distance between their own car and a preceding car properly as much as possible using a brake or an accelerator. A number of measures were recorded during a simulated driving task, and the participants were required to report subjective drowsiness once every minute. EEG (electroencephalography), heart rate variability (RRV3), and blink frequency were the physiological measures recorded. Meanwhile, behavioral measures included neck bending angle (horizontal and vertical), back pressure, foot pressure, and tracking error in a driving simulator task. Drowsy states were predicted via a multinomial logistic regression model. Physiological and behavioral measures were independent variables in the regression model and equated to the dependent variable: subjective evaluation of drowsiness. The stepwise method was adopted for the estimation of parameters of multinomial logistic regression model. The interval used for attaining the highest prediction accuracy was a 100 s interval between 20 and 120 s before the prediction. This approach clarified that the parameters finally appeared in the multinomial logistic regression model were different among participants, which indicated that the optimal structure of the model for predicting subjective drowsiness should be different among participants.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify eye movement characteristics during a visual search using nonlinear dynamics (chaos analysis). More concretely, the first Lyapunov exponent and the attractor plot were obtained for the time series data of x- and y-directional eye-gaze locations. An attempt was made to compare the first Lyapunov exponent and the attractor plot during a visual search task as a function of layout complexity of the display and to verify whether chaotic properties existed in the fluctuation of eye-gaze locations, and to examine how the scaling properties change as a function of the layout complexity. First Lyapunov exponent of the time series of eye-gaze locations took positive values, and tended to increase with the increase of search task difficulty (layout complexity). The attractor plot drew a trajectory like an ellipse, and the variation in attractor plots tended to be more complicated with the increase of task difficulty.

    The aim of this study was to propose an effective method for displaying driving environment and properly transmitting this to drivers. The display was designed by changing two types of proximity, that is, the proximity of the display and the proximity of the task itself. The proximity of the display was controlled as the type of the display or the distance between two displays. The proximity of the task was controlled as the difference of two tasks performed on the two displays. The participants (a total of eight graduate or undergraduate students) were required to carry out simultaneously a main simulated driving task and secondary tasks controlled by the two proximity factors above. The secondary tasks were one of the followings: reaction task to the approach of a following vehicle, lane changing task, reaction task when the distance to a destination is within the predetermined distance, and speed maintaining task. As a result, it has been demonstrated that the performance under the dual task condition does not always obey the predicted result by proximity compatibility principle.

    A procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of crash before the point in time of virtual accident was proposed using X-bar chart of the behavioral measures during a simulated driving task. The tracking error, the back pressure, the sitting pressure (COP movement on the sitting surface), the horizontal neck bending angle, and the vertical neck bending angle were measured during a driving task on the driving simulator. As a result of applying the proposed method to these data, we could identify the point in time with high risk of crash before the point in time of virtual accident occurred for nine participants out of ten. The time interval between the point in time with high risk of crash and the point in time of virtual accident ranged from 136 s to 526 s. As for the other one participant, the point in time with high risk of crash was identified 9 s after the point in time of virtual accident. In such a way, it has been verified that the proposed procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of crash is effective and promising for warning drivers of the high risky state of crash.

    We generally tend to discount the satisfaction induced by the consumption in the future relative to the satisfaction at present. We feel more attractive to the immediate reward even if it is not a great amount of money. This is called primacy of immediate reward. Therefore, it is possible that this property forces us to put immediate profits or rewards before those in the future especially when the incentive to immediate awards or profits is stronger. It is speculated that such a property leads to cognitive biases to commit violation, and at the worst case causes a crucial accident such as the critical mass accident at the uranium processing plant of JCO Tokai Works Test Facility. As the basis for the prevention of violation-based human error, the primacy of immediate reward was explored in detail and an attempt was made to identify the condition under which the primacy of immediate reward is dominant. The primacy of immediate reward did not always arise, and it readily occurred under the following situation: (1) very uncertain situation under which a promise is not necessarily observed, and (2) situation under which one feels much starved and need money to eat something with. It was found that the urged to gain an immediate reward readily led to time discount.

    It is not clear which of the R-E and the S-R compatibility principles is proper for the eye-gaze input. This issue should be addressed for the development of more usable eye-gaze input system. The aim of this study was to explore which of the two compatibility principles was proper for the eye-gaze input system. For all scroll methods, the task completion time did not differ between R-E and S-R compatibility conditions (see Fig. 4). In other words, the speed of scroll did not differ between two compatibility conditions for all of three scroll methods. The number of errors per 90 trials significantly differed among scroll conditions and between R-E and S-R compatibility conditions. Judging from the accuracy of scroll, the error was less when the S-R compatibility like non-touch screen Microsoft Windows was applied than when the R-E compatibility like iPod or iPad was applied. In the range of this study, it seems that the S-R compatibility is dominant from the viewpoints of scroll accuracy for all of three scroll methods. The subjective rating on both usability and fatigue also supported the superiority of S-R compatibility over the R-E compatibility condition. In conclusion, the S-R compatibility was found to be superior for the eye-gaze input system.

    This study aimed at investigating the effects of the target shape, the movement distance, the target size, and the direction of target presentation on the pointing performance using an eye-gaze input system. The target shape, the target size, the movement distance, and the direction of target presentation were within-subject experimental variables. The target shape included: diamond, circle, rectangle, and square. The direction of target presentation included eight directions: upper, lower, left, right, upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. It has been explored what type of cursor shape is suitable for eye-gaze input interfaces. On the basis of the data for identifying the effects of the aspect ratio of a target and the movement direction on the pointing time, an attempt was made to develop a generalized and extended Fitts' model that took into account the movement direction and the shape of a target.     The indirect involvement in the unethical behavior represented by violation of regulation is believed to lessen the responsibility for the accident occurred due to the unethical behavior as compared to the direct involvement in the unethical behavior. It has been explored how punishment changes when violation of rule or defection is committed indirectly in decision making. It was hypothesized that we tend to be insensitive to violation, defection, or unethical behavior in decision making when it was indirectly intermediated. In other words, we explored whether allowing indirect actions leads to increased uncooperative decision in decision making. These results mean that the punishment to the indirectness does not always get smaller. The punishment to the indirectness gets smaller only when the reward by Players B and D are larger. In conclusion, the hypothesis that the indirect intermediation reduces the punishment and thus lessons the responsibility for the unethical violation behavior is true for the limited condition.     The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of behavioral evaluation measures for predicting drivers' subjective drowsiness. First, we compared the effectiveness of two methods (correlation coefficient-based method and odds ratio-based method) for determining the order of entering behavioral measures into the prediction model. It was found that the prediction accuracy did not differ between both methods. Second, the prediction accuracy was compared among the numbers of behavioral measures. The prediction accuracy did not differ among four, five, and six behavioral measures, and it was concluded that entering at least four behavioral measures into the prediction model is enough to achieve higher prediction accuracy. Third, the prediction accuracy was compared between the strongly drowsy and the weakly drowsy group. The prediction accuracy differed between the two groups, and the proposed method was effective (the prediction accuracy was significantly higher) especially under the condition where drowsiness was induced to a larger extent.     The aim of this study was to investigate the irrationality in decision making on risk attitude. More concretely, the likelihood of reflection effect in decision making was investigated and compared between two conditions (the reflection effect from the risk seeking choice to the risk aversive choice and that from the risk aversive choice to the risk seeking choice). Second, the condition (p-value (probability of gain or loss) in for the reversal of choice (change of risk attitude) was identified and compared between gain and loss domains. In such a way, the irrational property in decision making on risk attitude was pointed out. On the basis of such an approach, it was discussed how decision making on choosing one of the two prospects (A) ($Y, p) and (B) ($X, 1) should be systematically treated in order to generalize the behavior of changing risk attitude under the condition of a smaller value of p and (Y is by far larger than X). Moreover, it was also pointed out that the derivation of the property of weighting function in prospect theory using a simple demonstrative decision making paradigm cannot be generalized and is not proper for verifying and deriving this property. The results were as follows: (1) While the reflective effect from the risk seeking choice to the risk aversive choice readily occurred when the occurrence probability of the larger gain was low, the reflective effect from the risk aversive choice to the risk seeking choice was unlikely and didn't readily occur. (2) The larger change (increment or decrement) of p-value was necessary to change the risk attitude (from risk aversive to risk seeking, and vice versa) in the loss domain than in the gain domain. (3) Only Equations (2) and (4) are insufficient for the generalization of characteristics of the weighting function. (4) For the systematical generalization of the change of risk attitude, the characteristics of the following prospects must be explored in more detail: Prospect (A) ($Y, p) and Prospect (B) ($X, 1), where p is a smaller probability, and (Y is by far larger than X).     We paid attention to one of the cognitive biases, that is, the outcome bias. We explored the evidence of outcome bias in a two-player economic game experiment where reward allocation is made between two players. The outcome bias occurred even when the intention of Player 1 was fair or generous. Thus, we could verify the hypothesis that we are readily led into the outcome bias. The comparative results between the two conditions (intentional and no-intentional conditions) definitely showed that Player 2 punished Player 1 to a larger extent when the outcome was disadvantageous for Player 2 (selfish outcome) irrespective of whether the die was chosen out of three types intentionally or not.     The behavioral measures such as neck vending angle and tracking error in steering maneuvering during the simulated driving task was recorded under the low arousal condition of all participants who stayed up all night without sleeping. We conducted trend analysis where time and the behavioral measure of drowsiness corresponded to an independent variable and a dependent variable, respectively. Applying the trend analysis technique to the experimental data of participants from whom the point in time when the participant would have encountered a crucial accident if he or she continued driving a vehicle (virtual accident), we proposed a method to predict in advance (before virtual accident occurs) the point in time with high risk of crash. By applying the proposed trend analysis method to behavioral measures, we found that the proposed approach could identify the point in time with high risk of crash and eventually predict in advance the symptom of the occurrence of point in time of virtual accident.     The aim of this study was to identify a more effective condition when providing warning with drivers. The type of auditory stimulus and the type of tactile stimulus were within-subject experimental variables. The auditory stimuli were looming sound, pure tone, and car horn. The tactile stimuli were simultaneous two-point stimulation, stimulation by apparent movement, and two-stimulation by apparent movement. The participants were required to carry out a simulated driving task, speed keeping operation by adjusting a foot pedal, and a judgmental task of hazardous situation from four directions (front, rear, left, and right). No significant differences of reaction time were detected among three types of auditory stimuli, and among three types of tactile stimuli. As for the false reaction to the catch trial, the combination of the looming sound and the 2-stimulation by apparent movement led to fewer false reactions than other combinations, which suggested the effectiveness of the combination of the looming sound and the 2-stimulation by apparent movement.

    (1)First, repeated ultimate game was carried out using a computer simulation. As a result, we confirmed that we never behave rationally as standard economics assumes. (2) Second, on the basis of prospect theory, the risk aversion and seeking tendencies were analyzed in gambling situations. It tended that the participant behaved risk-aversively in a gain condition, and showed a risk-seeking behavior in a loss condition. (3) Third, on the basis of the loss aversion property derived from prospect theory, we discussed the endowment effect. Stronger endowment effect was observed when the affection was attached to the object than when the affection was not attached to the object at all. (4) Fourth, as a result of exploring the relationship between the diversification of risk (accepting (taking) the total risk gradually by dividing it into a few steps) and the risk assessment, we tended to underestimate the total risk when the total risk was divided into a few risk-taking behaviors than when the total risk was taken at a time.

    The aim of this study was to predict drivers' drowsy driving and stop drivers from driving under drowsy states. While the participants were required to carry out a simulated driving task, EEG (MPF and alpha/beta-ratio), ECG (RRV3), tracking error, and subjective rating of drowsiness were measured. On the basis of such measurements, we made an attempt to predict the decreased arousal level using Bayesian estimation which is generally used to estimate the cause on the basis of the effect (in this case, the measurements above). As a result of predicting the decreased arousal level using MPF, alpha/beta-ratio, and RRV3, it has been suggested that the drowsy driving represented by larger tracking error during the simulated driving can be predicted in advance. Moreover, the proposed prediction method enabled us to predict the point in time when the participant surely encountered a serious accident with fairly high probability. It was also found that the fine renewal of the prior probability lead to the decrease of false prediction of decreased arousal level.

    The aim of this study was to propose an effective method for displaying driving environment and properly transmitting this to drivers. The display was designed by changing two types of proximity, that is, the proximity of the display and the proximity of the task itself. The proximity of the display was controlled as the type of the display or the distance between two displays. The proximity of the task was controlled as the difference of two tasks performed on the two displays. More concretely, the similar proximity of the task was either two analogue tasks or two digital tasks. These two proximities were all within-subject variables. The participants (a total of eight graduate or undergraduate students) were required to carry out simultaneously a simulated driving task and a judgment and reaction task of the display information controlled by the two proximity factors above. The performance measures were tracking error in the simulated driving task and percentage correct and reaction time in the secondary judgment and reaction task. As a result, it has been demonstrated that the performance under the dual task condition obeys the predicted outcome by proximity compatibility principle.

    EEG (EEG-MPF, EEG-alpha/beta), heart rate variability (RRV3), tracking error and subjective rating of fatigue (drowsiness) while performing a simulated driving task were measured to predict drowsiness on the basis of Bayesian estimation method. The relation between these measurements and drowsiness was analyzed. As a result, EEG-MPF tended to decrease with the increase of drowsiness. It tended that EEG-alpha/beta, RRV3 and tracking error increased with the increase of drowsiness. Then, we have proposed a method that can predict drowsiness by applying Bayesian estimation method to physiological measurements such as EEG-MPF, EEG-alpha/beta, RRV3. Bayesian estimation carries out a statistical inference using some kind of evidences or observations and calculating the probability that a hypothesis is true. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed method could to some extent predict the symptom of decreased consciousness (drowsiness).

    The development of switch system which leads not only to a faster response and less frequent visual off road but also to quick learning would be useful for the purpose of enhancing safety. The usability is, however, not evaluated on the basis of learning characteristics of such measures as operation time and frequency of visual off road. The evaluation of usability of switch systems by means of ease of learning is very useful for automotive designers of cockpit modules. An attempt was made to investigate the learning characteristics of the developed integrated switch system using face direction with the traditional touch-panel interface.

    We proposed a tactile 8-directional warning system which informs drivers of hazardous traffic situations hidden in 8 directions via tactile apparent movement. The effectiveness of the proposed warning system was compared with that of a warning system by simultaneous two-point stimulation and a system without warning. As a result, the apparent lead to quick reaction and higher hit rate (higher accuracy of hazard perception and recognition) as compared with the simultaneous two-point stimulation. However, this was limited to the front and the rear hazard, and was not true for all directions. The vibrotactile warning system that can recognize hazards from all of eight directions should be developed in future research.

    Recently, the number of the death toll due to traffic accidents tends to decrease. In spite of this, the pedestrian-related traffic accidents tend to increase. As the number of traffic accidents related to pedestrians is increasing more and more, it is necessary to secure safety of pedestrians. It is off course important for pedestrian and drivers to observe traffic regulations and try to secure safety by themselves. However, only this is not enough to decrease traffic accidents related to pedestrian. Therefore, more and more efforts are needed especially from the viewpoint of automotive technology itself. Automotive manufacturers try to equip an automotive cockpit with pedestrian detection system and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents related to pedestrians. This study aims at obtaining basic knowledge for designing more effective pedestrian detection system. A basic study to establish an effective warning presentation method, an attempt was made to verify that the directional judgment is faster using the location information than using the shape of arrow. It was also examined that the directional judgment time gets longer as the location is far away from the fixation point. It tended that the discrimination at the fixation point tended to be longer. The discrimination time tended to be longer with the increase in eccentricity. Moreover, the location of counterclockwise 90 degrees led to the longest discrimination time.

    Four character input methods for eye-gaze input interface were compared from the viewpoints of input speed, input accuracy, and subjective rating on ease of input and fatigue. Four input methods included (1) I-QGSM(vertical), (2) I-QGSM(circle), (3) eye-fixation method, and (4) screen button. While the eye-fixation method (3) led to faster input, the I-QGSM (vertical) led to fewer errors. In conclusion, it is difficult to develop character input method that satisfies both speed and accuracy.

    The effects of age on applicability of the location compatibility principle to the design of display and control systems were discussed. A dual-task experiment was conducted, in which the primary task was first-order tracking. The secondary tasks included control of an air conditioner, the operation of a radio and the operation of a CD/MD, by means of either a steering wheel-mounted switch or a console-mounted switch. The display was arranged either in front of or on the left side of a participant. Performance of the young group did not completely follow predictions of the compatibility principle. In particular, the principle did not apply to the left-side display condition. The steering wheel-mounted switch was more effective than the left-side switch even for the left-side display. The compatibility principle was applicable to both front and left-side displays for the older adults. For the front display, the steering wheel-mounted switch was more effective. Such differences should be taken into account when designing display and control systems in man-vehicle systems.

    Using electromyographic (EMG) analysis and three-dimensional motion analysis, the usability of automobile consoles was evaluated as a function of age. The experimental factors were type of automobile consoles (A and B) and age young and older adults). The console B improved the console A so that it could be operated easily and comfortably with less workload and with less movement of left hand. EMG signals from trapezius muscle, deltoid, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, and pectoralis major were recorded during opening and closing consoles A and B with left hand. Simultaneously, the motion of wrist, elbow joint, and shoulder joint was recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system with two cameras. EMG signals were analyzed using integral of EMG, mean of EMG, root mean square of EMG and mean power frequency (MPF). The three-dimensional motion analysis included normalized time series of velocity and acceleration of wrist, elbow joint, and shoulder joint, maximum of velocity and acceleration of these joints, normalized time series of elbow angle, maximum power of upper arm and forearm. From the viewpoints of physical workload evaluated by means of EMG measures, the console B was found to reduce the physical workload as compared with the console A. Especially for older adults, the console B reduced the workload. In accordance with the EMG based measures, the biomechanical data changed and verified that the workload of the console B became lower than that of the console A. The psychological rating on usability also showed that the console B was superior to the console B. However, the evaluation method proposed in this study pointed out that the console B could be improved so that the workload reduces further and the usability enhances. In such a way, the proposed method based on EMG analysis and motion analysis can be used to design a better automobile console system.

    Recently, the use of steering wheel mounted switches has been receiving attention. Such switches allow a driver to maintain his or her focus on the road. If the number of steering wheel mounted switches or their arrangement is improper, the advantage of using them may be diminished, and many operator errors may occur. The objective of this study was to examine bow the number of steering wheel mounted switches and their arrangement interactively affected. a driver's performance. The participants were required to press a specified switch while performing a first-order tracking task. The number of steering wheel mounted switches affected the reaction time in the switch operation task. With regard to the method of arranging the steering wheel mounted switches, the cross-type arrangement was more effective than a vertical-type arrangement. The cross-type arrangement with three steering wheel mounted switches provided the best performance and highest psychological rating.
    Relevance to industry: Cars equipped with steering wheel mounted switches are increasing. However, the number and arrangement of switches differ among automobile manufacturers, and there are no specific design guidelines on the number and arrangement of steering wheel mounted switches. Such guidelines would contribute to safety and efficiency by determining the optimum number of steering wheel mounted switches and their arrangement. Consequently, such a study would be expected to result in a reduction in driver errors and vehicle accidents. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
