    A warning signal presented via a visual or an auditory cue might interfere with auditory or visual information inside and outside a vehicle. On the other hand, such interference would be certainly reduced if a tactile cue is used. Therefore, it is expected that tactile cues would be promising as warning signals, especially in a noisy environment. In order to determine the most suitable modality of cue (warning) to a visual hazard in noisy environments, auditory and tactile cues were examined in this study. The condition of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) was set to Oms, 500ms, and 1000ms. Two types of noises were used: white noise and noise outside a vehicle recorded in a real-world driving environment. The noise level LA(eq), (equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level) inside the experimental chamber of each type of noise was adjusted to approximately 60 dB (A), 70 dB (A), and 80 dB (A). As a result, it was verified that tactile warning was more effective than auditory warning. When the noise outside a vehicle from a real-driving environment was used as the noise inside the experimental chamber, the reaction time to the auditory warning was not affected by the noise level.     This study proposed a procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of virtual crash using a control chart methodology for behavioural measures during a simulated driving task. Tracking error, human back pressure, sitting pressure and horizontal and vertical neck bending angles were measured during the simulated driving task. The time with a high risk of a virtual crash occurred in 9 out of 10 participants. The time interval between the successfully detected point in time with high risk of virtual crash and the point in time of virtual crash ranged from 80 to 324 s. The proposed procedure for predicting the point in time with a high risk of a crash is promising for warning drivers of the state of high risk of crash.Practitioner Summary: Many fatal crashes occur due to drowsy driving. We proposed a method to predict the point in time with high risk of virtual crash before such a virtual crash occurs. This is done using behavioural measures during a simulated driving task. The effectiveness of the method is also demonstrated.

    Objective: This study aimed at identifying and predicting in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident before a virtual accident actually occurs using the change of behavioral measures and subjective rating on drowsiness over time and the trend analysis of each behavioral measure.
    Methods: Behavioral measures such as neck bending angle and tracking error in steering maneuvering during the simulated driving task were recorded under the low arousal condition of all participants who stayed up all night without sleeping. The trend analysis of each evaluation measure was conducted using a single regression model where time and each measure of drowsiness corresponded to an independent variable and a dependent variable, respectively. Applying the trend analysis technique to the experimental data, we proposed a method to predict in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident (in a real-world driving environment, this corresponds to a crash) before the point in time when the participant would have encountered a crucial accident if he or she continued driving a vehicle (we call this the point in time of a virtual accident).
    Results: On the basis of applying the proposed trend analysis method to behavioral measures, we found that the proposed approach could predict in advance the point in time with a high risk of a virtual accident before the point in time of a virtual accident.
    Conclusion: The proposed method is a promising technique for predicting in advance the time zone with potentially high risk (probability) of being involved in an accident due to drowsy driving and for warning drivers of such a drowsy and risky state.

    The ocular movement characteristics to LED lights with high luminous intensity were explored when viewing such LED lights using a belt conveyer equipped with such LED light with high luminous intensity. The ocular movement characteristics such as blink duration, blink frequency, and PERCLOS70 were investigated as a function of LED color and luminous intensity. The blink duration consistently tended to increase with the increase of luminous intensity for all colors of LED. The blink frequency tended to increase under the high luminous intensity for both red and white LED which have higher wavelength. As for green LED, the blink frequency was not affected by the luminous intensity. Contrary to the case of red and white LED, the blink frequency of blue LED tended to decrease under the high luminous intensity. PERCLOS70 of red, white, and green LEDs tended to increase with the increase of luminous intensity. In this manner, the ocular movement characteristics of blue LED could be indicated.

    The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of physiological and behavioral evaluation measures for predicting a drivers' subjective drowsiness based on a multinomial logistic regression model. The participants were required to steer a steering wheel and keep their vehicle to the centerline as much as they could, and to maintain the distance between their own car and a preceding car properly as much as possible using a brake or an accelerator. A number of measures were recorded during a simulated driving task, and the participants were required to report subjective drowsiness once every minute. EEG (electroencephalography), heart rate variability (RRV3), and blink frequency were the physiological measures recorded. Meanwhile, behavioral measures included neck bending angle (horizontal and vertical), back pressure, foot pressure, and tracking error in a driving simulator task. Drowsy states were predicted via a multinomial logistic regression model. Physiological and behavioral measures were independent variables in the regression model and equated to the dependent variable: subjective evaluation of drowsiness. The stepwise method was adopted for the estimation of parameters of multinomial logistic regression model. The interval used for attaining the highest prediction accuracy was a 100 s interval between 20 and 120 s before the prediction. This approach clarified that the parameters finally appeared in the multinomial logistic regression model were different among participants, which indicated that the optimal structure of the model for predicting subjective drowsiness should be different among participants.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify eye movement characteristics during a visual search using nonlinear dynamics (chaos analysis). More concretely, the first Lyapunov exponent and the attractor plot were obtained for the time series data of x- and y-directional eye-gaze locations. An attempt was made to compare the first Lyapunov exponent and the attractor plot during a visual search task as a function of layout complexity of the display and to verify whether chaotic properties existed in the fluctuation of eye-gaze locations, and to examine how the scaling properties change as a function of the layout complexity. First Lyapunov exponent of the time series of eye-gaze locations took positive values, and tended to increase with the increase of search task difficulty (layout complexity). The attractor plot drew a trajectory like an ellipse, and the variation in attractor plots tended to be more complicated with the increase of task difficulty.

    The aim of this study was to propose an effective method for displaying driving environment and properly transmitting this to drivers. The display was designed by changing two types of proximity, that is, the proximity of the display and the proximity of the task itself. The proximity of the display was controlled as the type of the display or the distance between two displays. The proximity of the task was controlled as the difference of two tasks performed on the two displays. The participants (a total of eight graduate or undergraduate students) were required to carry out simultaneously a main simulated driving task and secondary tasks controlled by the two proximity factors above. The secondary tasks were one of the followings: reaction task to the approach of a following vehicle, lane changing task, reaction task when the distance to a destination is within the predetermined distance, and speed maintaining task. As a result, it has been demonstrated that the performance under the dual task condition does not always obey the predicted result by proximity compatibility principle.

    A procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of crash before the point in time of virtual accident was proposed using X-bar chart of the behavioral measures during a simulated driving task. The tracking error, the back pressure, the sitting pressure (COP movement on the sitting surface), the horizontal neck bending angle, and the vertical neck bending angle were measured during a driving task on the driving simulator. As a result of applying the proposed method to these data, we could identify the point in time with high risk of crash before the point in time of virtual accident occurred for nine participants out of ten. The time interval between the point in time with high risk of crash and the point in time of virtual accident ranged from 136 s to 526 s. As for the other one participant, the point in time with high risk of crash was identified 9 s after the point in time of virtual accident. In such a way, it has been verified that the proposed procedure for predicting the point in time with high risk of crash is effective and promising for warning drivers of the high risky state of crash.

    We generally tend to discount the satisfaction induced by the consumption in the future relative to the satisfaction at present. We feel more attractive to the immediate reward even if it is not a great amount of money. This is called primacy of immediate reward. Therefore, it is possible that this property forces us to put immediate profits or rewards before those in the future especially when the incentive to immediate awards or profits is stronger. It is speculated that such a property leads to cognitive biases to commit violation, and at the worst case causes a crucial accident such as the critical mass accident at the uranium processing plant of JCO Tokai Works Test Facility. As the basis for the prevention of violation-based human error, the primacy of immediate reward was explored in detail and an attempt was made to identify the condition under which the primacy of immediate reward is dominant. The primacy of immediate reward did not always arise, and it readily occurred under the following situation: (1) very uncertain situation under which a promise is not necessarily observed, and (2) situation under which one feels much starved and need money to eat something with. It was found that the urged to gain an immediate reward readily led to time discount.

    It is not clear which of the R-E and the S-R compatibility principles is proper for the eye-gaze input. This issue should be addressed for the development of more usable eye-gaze input system. The aim of this study was to explore which of the two compatibility principles was proper for the eye-gaze input system. For all scroll methods, the task completion time did not differ between R-E and S-R compatibility conditions (see Fig. 4). In other words, the speed of scroll did not differ between two compatibility conditions for all of three scroll methods. The number of errors per 90 trials significantly differed among scroll conditions and between R-E and S-R compatibility conditions. Judging from the accuracy of scroll, the error was less when the S-R compatibility like non-touch screen Microsoft Windows was applied than when the R-E compatibility like iPod or iPad was applied. In the range of this study, it seems that the S-R compatibility is dominant from the viewpoints of scroll accuracy for all of three scroll methods. The subjective rating on both usability and fatigue also supported the superiority of S-R compatibility over the R-E compatibility condition. In conclusion, the S-R compatibility was found to be superior for the eye-gaze input system.
