Petrological characterization for material provenance of haniwa earthenware from mounded tombs in the Kibi region, Japan

To determine the provenance of the materials used in the production of haniwa earthenware unearthed from mounded tombs (kofun) in the Kibi region (modern Okayama Prefecture) during the Kofun period (late 3rd - 6th century CE) of Japan, we carried out petrological analyses of haniwa sherds, including optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and electron-probe analysis. The 25 haniwa sherds analyzed from 12 representative mounded tombs are composed of mineral and rock inclusions with variable grain size set in a clay matrix. The dominant inclusions are quartz, K-feldspar, and plagioclase, associated with minor amounts of amphibole, volcanic glass, and granitic rocks in all the haniwa sherds, and small amounts of hornfels, quartz rock, and accessory minerals, including mica, ilmenite, and chromite, in some of the sherds. Amphibole and plagioclase have compositional variations indicative of the mixing of tephra and granitic components. The compositions of volcanic glass inclusions are similar to those of the Aira-Tanzawa and Kikai-Akahoya tephras widely distributed in southwestern Japan. Bulk chemical compositions show magmatic differentiation trends, which are variable between individual tombs. From these results, it is concluded that the paste materials of haniwa in the Kibi region were commonly derived from weathered granitic rocks mixed with minor amounts of three widespread tephras. The variations of chemical and mineralogical compositions are probably the reflection of local geologic settings, suggesting the presence of specific mining sites of paste materials around each tomb. The mining sites could be located at the bases of hills of granitic rocks covered by widespread tephras and in some cases, near the flood plain of big river systems.

Abstract

This chapter examines the emergence and development of lacquer production in Japan as the first evidence of an artificial organic compound. It discusses how the invention of pottery can be considered as a technological and cognitive precondition for it. Lacquer technology was invented as human-plant interaction increased in the warming climate of the early Holocene (ca. 7,500–8,000 cal bp). The invention of lacquer technology was a significant step forward in human history as it required a process of artificial and irreversible chemical change. In East Asia, pottery appeared in the final stage of the Pleistocene. It was also a new material created by mixing clay, water, various tempers, and firing over a flame. The invention of pottery reinforced the image schema of container and led to a new type of cooking: Stew with different kinds of food. These activities of making and using pottery may have prompted the invention of lacquer technology. Based on the archaeological evidence of pottery and lacquer in East Asia, the invention process of new material is discussed with reference to the environment, climate, material, sedentariness, and image schemas to gain a new understanding of the integrative relationship between mind, body, and material.

Archaeointensity record of weak field recurrence in Japan: new data from Late Yayoi and Kofun ceramic artifacts Reviewed

Summary

We present new absolute archaeointensity data from six archaeological sites situated in the Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The materials studied are well-dated fragments from pottery, ceramic coffins and haniwa artifacts. Their ages range from 160 AD to 675 AD, covering the Late Yayoi and Kofun periods. Rock magnetic experiments suggest the presence of magnetite and/or Ti-magnetite as the main carrier of the remanence, with a possible minor contribution of higher coercivity minerals. After thermal demagnetization experiments, the most magnetically stable samples were selected for archaeointensity analysis performed following the double-heating method proposed by Thellier and modified by Coe. Partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) checks and pTRM tail-checks were performed for monitoring possible chemical alterations during heating. All measurements were corrected for both anisotropy and cooling-rate effects. Successful archaeointensity determinations, following rigorous selection criteria, were obtained for samples from all the investigated archaeological sites. Compared with literature data from Japan, the new high-quality data show significantly lower intensity values. They also reveal possible fast secular variation changes during the Late Yayoi period and very weak geomagnetic intensity field around 630 AD. Such values offer evidence of a possible recurrence of weak intensity field in East Asia, suggesting an ancient recurrence of the West Pacific Anomaly. The new data might change the archaeomagnetic field models interpretations in the area, even though more data are still necessary to better understand the secular variation in Japan and the temporal evolution of the geomagnetic field's behavior in East Asia.

Kofuns are burial mounds of ancient Japan (3rd-7th century CE, defined as Kofun Period). The construction history and archaeological significance of Kofuns of the Late Kofun Period (6th-7th century) still need to be characterized. This study dealt with Tobiotsuka Kofun (Okayama Prefecture, Japan) and aimed to investigate if diversity and structure of soil fungal communities, and their relationships with soil characteristics, beyond reflecting present vegetation, may be informative on the construction history of the burial mound. In particular the analyses aimed to verify the supposed presence of a boundary between the original hill and the potential anthropic backfill. Soil fungal communities were characterized by high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq technology), at the ground and through different archaeological soil layers. Approximately 1.5 x 10(6) high quality ITS2 sequences, clustered in 1875 OTUs, were obtained from 59 sampling points, distributed inside the burial chamber and on the Kofun external slopes. Heterogeneity and vertical distribution of fungal communities, considered in terms of taxonomic and trophic groups, generally showed a compatible pattern with present-day topographic conditions and vegetation. However, the chemical soil analyses and fungal distribution with depth, in particular that of saprotrophic fungi, cannot be explained by natural soil development and ecological context only, and point towards the presence of a former topsoil layer that was disturbed and at least partially buried by the Kofun construction.

Anthropomorphic artifacts have unique characteristics, as they are closely related to social and technical cognition and contain complex information. However, their meanings can be elusive. The present study aimed to examine how modern Japanese people perceive the faces of Japanese prehistoric (13,000???800 cal BC) and protohistoric (AD 250???600) anthropomorphic artifacts by focusing on the facial expressions and impressions of clay figure faces. The study included 75 Japanese participants and 131 figure faces from three historical periods. The results showed that participants perceived the prehistoric and protohistoric facial expressions differently (as being happier, sadder, and less surprised), depending on the period they were created in. We examined the relationships between impressions and perceived expressions of the figure faces, and found that faces became more complicated due to the introduction of facial morphometric features. The results may be applicable to understanding the variation in Japanese figures, especially the faces.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the factors which promote or prevent warfare through an examination of current arguments over the origin of warfare and archaeological data. Warfare is a social behavior which develops on the basis of moral standards that value parochial altruism, loyalty to the group and its leader, and obedience to authority. While physical attack can be observed among many species, only humans conduct warfare because morality is a human universal. Contrary to the currently popular understanding that the origin of warfare goes back to the beginning of human history, systematic examination of the rate of violence on skeletal remains indicates that warfare was not prevalent among prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies. Moral values promoting egalitarianism, sharing, autonomy, mutual aid, and unrestricted generosity, which are effectively maintained among peaceful hunter-gatherer societies through mutual monitoring and the power of reputation, prevent the concentration of power and inter-group violence. These cultural/cognitive tendencies evolved among prehistoric foragers as the promotion of peaceful relationships beyond the kinship-level was more positively adaptive.
