    We report the electrochemical oxidation of graphite sheets using BF4 salts, and direct electrochemical reduction of its product to prepare two-dimensional carbon materials efficiently. Electrochemical oxidation enables the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) under milder conditions than those required for chemical oxidation, e.g., a strong oxidant in concentrated acid. In this work, graphite sheet was electrochemically oxidized with BF4 salt electrolyte solution, and its product was electrochemically reduced in PBS. In the present method, the use of BF4 salt allows the successful electrochemical synthesis of high-quality, uniform GO without the use of an acid. Furthermore, the non-destructive nature of the method provides a GO product that can be subjected to electrochemical reduction to form reduced GO. Thus, the method provides facile access to high-quality two-dimensional carbon materials in a manner that has the potential for mass production.

    Oxidation of graphite is widely recognized as a promising method for large-scale production of graphene-like materials. Chemical oxidation of graphite has been developed for more than 100 years, while electrochemical oxidation has attracted attention over the last 10 years as a simple, safe, and controllable production method for graphene. This review summarizes the electrochemical production of graphene analogs focusing on the electrochemical conditions and form of starting graphite that affect the properties of the products. Electrochemical treatment of graphite by direct current has been applied to various graphite, such as HOPG, graphite rod, graphite foil, and powdered graphite, and generates deeply oxidized graphene materials. On the other hand, treatments with alternative current generate low oxygen content products. Therefore, the electrochemical treatment of graphite provides an option for the controlled production of graphene-like materials.

    An instantly usable screen-printed paper-based Ag/AgCl electrode was fabricated for use as a cost-effective disposable reference electrode. The reference electrode showed potential stability for approximately 75 h. The setup time, which is less than 1 min, is much shorter than those for similar previously reported electrodes.
