    A semi-enclosed river-mouth bay (Kojima Bay) and the artificial lake within it (Kojima Lake) were studied to examine their nutrient storage and export processes and characteristics. The aim of this study was to perform mass balance analysis using long-term monitoring and historical accumulation data of phosphorus (P) via(210)Pb measurements of accumulated sediment. The results are then compared with data based on analysis of P concentrations in core samples to delineate input and output nutrient fluxes in a semi-enclosed bay and an artificial lake, in order to evaluate if the lake sediment is a source or sink of P during the transportation process from the river to the bay. From 1980 to 2008, total P flux into the lake is 3520 tons. The lake sediment phosphorus retention estimated by the model (383 tons) was lower than that obtained by multiplying the average total P concentration in sediment samples by the sediment accumulation rate (1288 tons), possibly indicating that recycling from sediments deposited before 1980 contributed to the recent P cycle. The implication for these data is that the severe eutrophication of the lake in the 1970s led to greatly elevated P levels. The inner artificial lake had a significant amount of trapped P, and the production of diatoms increased in response to P enrichment in lake water, an initial sign of eutrophication. The modeled annual P flux into the lake sediments decreased from similar to 15 g m(-2) yr(-1)(a flux into the sediment) in 1980 to negative values (a flux out of sediment) by 2008. The decreasing trend of nutrients accumulating in lake sediments suggests the lake is slowly recovering from eutrophication, especially since the 1990s.

    This study aims to confirm the effect of a small stream impoundment on phosphorus and nitrogen dynamics in a suburban watershed. The results show that the phosphate concentration in the water body was significantly higher than that in the inflowing water under ordinary flow conditions. The phosphorus promotes algal growth that causes significant diurnal dissolved oxygen variation because of photosynthesis and respiration. The phosphate exchange between the sediment and overlying water was mainly controlled by diffusion flux rather than by advective flux seepage because of large amounts of phosphorus accumulated on the surface of the sediment. When a flood occurs, the phosphorus-enriched water is flushed downstream by rain-swollen currents. In summary, an impoundment affects in-stream phosphorus concentration through organic matter degradation and the release of phosphate in the sediment.

    In this study, we investigated the historical variation, source identification, and distribution of heavy metal pollution in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using Pb-210 dating. Our results suggest that the heavy metal concentrations were higher in the western part of the estuary. For all heavy metals, Cd was significantly enriched in the sediments. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) has experienced rapid economic development in the past 40 years, a decreasing trend in heavy metal fluxes after 2004 was identified, which suggests a reduction in heavy metal concentrations due to the removal of heavy polluting industries and the effective control of sewage discharge. A binary mixing model reveals that the contributions of anthropogenic Pb ranged from 45.4 to 64%. Based on lead isotopic ratios (Pb-206/207 and Pb-208/206), it was found that geologic materials and industrial pollution were the main sources of heavy metals in the PRE sediments.

    Indonesian coastal alluvial plain has a large groundwater storage capacity. However, human perturbation to the groundwater environment has resulted in groundwater contamination. Nitrogen species are parameter those usually detected in Indonesian coastal groundwater. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the possible sources of ammonium (NH4+-N), as one form of nitrogen species, using both chemical properties and geographic information. The study site was Indramayu, a developing rural area located in the northern part of West Java. In August 2017, 20 groundwater and river water samples were collected from sites representative of various types of land-use. The chloride (Cl-) concentration in the samples ranged from 15 mg/L to 12,000 mg/L. Most of the locations represented fresh-brackish to brackish-salt water conditions, indicating the influence of seawater on the groundwater samples. Furthermore, analysis of several nitrogen species identified high NH4+-N concentrations in the samples. Based on the relationship between Cl- and NH4+-N, samples were clustered into three groups. The first and second groups exhibited linear correlations, while in the third group, no relationship between these two parameters was identified. The land-use associated with each group was then evaluated. The main NH4+-N source in the first group was identified as organic sediment, where NH4+-N may be released through ion exchange with sodium, facilitated by the high salinity conditions. The source of NH4+-N in the second group was suggested to be a combination of sediment, fertilizer, and human and animal waste. Finally, it was hypothesized that the source of NH4+ in the third group is mainly human waste.

    Seawater intrusion and salinization are the most common problems of water pollution in coastal groundwater. To clarify the process of groundwater salinization in a coastal alluvial plain, we estimated the groundwater recharge and salinization process in Osaka coastal groundwater using delta O-18, delta D, and Cl-. Water samples were collected at 14 boreholes of 9 plots with depth of -5 to -60 m amsl in March 2015. The delta O-18 values and Cl- concentrations of the groundwater varied spatially from -6.4 parts per thousand to -4.7 parts per thousand and 17 mg/L to 5193 mg/L, respectively. Based on Cl- concentrations, the maximum mixing ratio of seawater with the concentration of 1800 mg/L into groundwater was estimated to be 29% about 3 km inland from the shoreline at the depth of about -40 m. The relationship between delta O-18 and Cl- of groundwater and seawater indicated three types of end members: seawater with high Cl- and delta O-18, a groundwater source with lower Cl- and lower delta O-18 (-5.6 parts per thousand), and a groundwater source with lower Cl- and the lowest delta O-18 (-7.2 parts per thousand). According to the relationship between the altitude of groundwater recharge and delta O-18 established by previous research, two types of groundwater recharge and source areas were estimated to be coastal lowland and upland with altitudes <10 m amsl and surrounding hill 18 km inland from the shoreline with altitudes of 100 m amsl.

    The focus of this work is the change in sediment properties and chemical characteristics that occur after land reclamation projects. The results indicate a higher sedimentation rate in Lake Hachirogata after reclamation, with the rate increasing with proximity to the agricultural zone. In the west-side water samples, higher levels of dissolved total nitrogen and dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) were found in both surface and bottom waters. The increase in P (39-80%) was generally greater than that for N (12-16%), regarding the nutrient supply from reclaimed farmland in the western part of the lake. In the eastern part of the lake, the pore-water Cl- profile showed a decreasing vertical gradient in the sediment core. This indicates desalination of the lake water after construction of a sluice gate in 1961. In the western sediment-core sample, a uniform Cl- profile indicates the mixing of lake water and pore water after reclamation. Considering the sedimentation of P in the last 100 years, there is a trend of increasing accumulation of P and P-activities after the reclamation project. This appears to be an impact from change in the lake environment as a result of increased agricultural nutrients, desalination, and residence. A large amount of mobile phosphorus (42-72% of TP in the western core sample) trapped in sediment increases the risk of phosphorus release and intensification of algal blooms. High sediment phosphorus and phosphorus mobility should be considered a source of pollution in the coastal environment.

    Effects of physical and morphometric factors on nutrient removal properties were studied in small agricultural ponds with different depths, volumes, and residence times in western Japan. Average residence time was estimated to be &gt; 15 days, and it tended to decrease from summer to winter because of the increase in water withdrawal for agricultural activity. Water temperature was clearly different between the surface and bottom layers; this indicates that thermal stratification occurred in summer. Chlorophyll-a was significantly high (&gt; 20 mu g/L) in the surface layer (&lt;0.5 m) and influenced by the thermal stratification. Removal ratios of dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) and dissolved total phosphorus in the ponds were estimated to be 53-98% and 39-98% in August and 10-92% and 36-57% in December, respectively. Residence time of the ponds was longer in August than in December, and DTN removal, in particular, was more significant in ponds with longer residence time. Our results suggest residence time is an important factor for nitrogen removal in small agricultural ponds as well as large lakes.

Clarifying the variations of groundwater recharge response to a changing non-stationary hydrological process is important for efficiently managing groundwater resources, particularly in regions with limited precipitation that face the risk of water shortage. However, the rate of aquifer recharge is difficult to evaluate in terms of large annual-variations and frequency of flood events. In our research, we attempt to simulate related groundwater recharge processes under variable climate conditions using the SWAT Model, and validate the groundwater recharge using the Hydrus Model. The results show that annual average groundwater recharge comprised approximately 33 % of total precipitation, however, larger variation was found for groundwater recharge and surface runoff compared to evapotranspiration, which fluctuated with annual precipitation variations. The annual variation of groundwater resources is shown to be related to precipitation. In spatial variations, the upstream is the main surface water discharge area; the middle and downstream areas are the main groundwater recharge areas. Validation by the Hydrus Model shows that the estimated and simulated groundwater levels are consistent in our research area. The groundwater level shows a quick response to the groundwater recharge rate. The rainfall intensity had a great impact on the changes of the groundwater level. Consequently, it was estimated that large spatial and temporal variation of the groundwater recharge rate would be affected by precipitation uncertainty in future.

    Lake Kojima, an artificial lake located in the coastal area of western Japan, is categorized as a hyper eutrophic lake due to the nutrient inputs from the Sasagase River, Kurashilci River and Kamo River. The input nutrient loads from the rivers have never been assessed because there are no observation stations for runoff rate. The objective of this study is to confirm the total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) loads into Lake Kojima using the SWAT model for 60 years and considering changes in land use and the amount of domestic wastewater in the watersheds. Estimation results show that more than 90% of the total nutrient load comes from the Sasagase and Kurashiki rivers. The estimated T-N and T-P loads indicated two different trends in the rivers; an increasing trend is found during the period from 1950 to 1980, while a decreasing trend is found during the period from 1980 to 2009. It was suggested that the increasing trend was commonly caused by the combined effects of increase of the amount of domestic wastewater and agricultural wastewater in the watersheds, while the decreasing trend was caused by the expansion of domestic wastewater treatment and decrease of agricultural land use. The contribution ratio of domestic wastewater to the total amount of nutrient load was estimated to be 60% in Sasagase River and 15% in Kurashiki River because the treatment ratio of domestic wastewater in Kurashilci River was higher than in Sasagase River.

    In order to evaluate the effects of non-stationary nutrient transport on the coastal seaweed cultivation, variations of the seaweed yield, nutrient condition of seawater, rainfall and nutrient transport from the river, observed over the last 40 years were examined to characterize the long-term trends and the influencing factors on the variation of seaweed yield. The results show that seaweed yield increased until 1973, then decreased in recent years. The recent condition of nutrients in seawater is relatively severe for seaweed farming. The results suggest that river-derived nutrient supply to coastal area will decrease further by the decrease of river discharge. For the future prospect, it is important to evaluate the variation of other nutrient supply such as from groundwater, offshore or bottom sediment as well as river discharge.

    This study investigated the effects of dam construction on sediment phosphorus concentrations in a semi-enclosed bay in western Japan. Long sediment core samples spanning over 100 years were collected from the bay, and their P fractions were analyzed. Sediment P concentrations and the P accumulation rate in an artificial lake increased after the construction of a coastal dam in 1959. The amount of P accumulated in the 60 years after the dam construction was ~1.7 times that prior to the dam construction. Moreover, concentrations of mobile forms of P, primarily redox-sensitive P species, were higher in freshwater sediments above the dam than in saline sediments below the dam. The redox-sensitive forms of P in freshwater sediments increased sharply after the dam construction, from 100 to ~900μg/g, accompanied by a decrease in chloride (Cl-) concentrations to &lt
    2000mg/l. In the artificial lake, the maximum values of total P (TP) and redox-sensitive P concentrations were ~1200μg/g and ~900μg/g at depths of 23cm and 3cm, respectively. Smaller peaks observed in the TP and redox-sensitive P concentration values likely corresponded to the recycled P released from sediments. The maximum values corresponded to hypereutrophic conditions that were caused by extensive discharges of sewage during the 1970s. The lake has been gradually recovering from these hypereutrophic conditions, as observed from the trophic state index. However, despite a substantial decrease in P loading after the 1980s, the lake still has a high trophic level. The presently high mobile P concentrations in surface sediments may lead to high-magnitude P releases with environmental changes in the future. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

    This study examined nutrient transport dynamics and surface water groundwater interactions in the tidal area of the Yamato River near Osaka, Japan. Spatial variation in radon (Rn-222) and hydraulic gradient suggest that groundwater discharges to the river in the upstream reaches, but in the zone near the river mouth, river water recharges the groundwater. The deep groundwater depression is likely due to heavy groundwater extraction for use in Osaka up to 1970. Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) levels were negatively correlated with dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Based on mass balance calculations, nutrient production occurred in the tidal reach. Approximately 3% of dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) and 9% of dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) loads were attributed to upstream sources.

    The objective of this study was to confirm the effect of small impoundments on nutrient transport on a catchment scale. We examined the effect using the ratio that dissolved nitrogen (DN) is divided by Cl-. The ratio increased in the summer season and decreased in the winter season at the outlet of the impoundments. The reason for decreasing of the ratio may be explained by the decline of DN concentration, by assimilation or denitrification. The relation between residence time and magnitude of nitrate removal showed that long residence time can lead to greater reduction of nitrate. However, DN was produced in larger impoundments and sediment interaction may occur as a result. Therefore, smaller impoundments may be more effective for nitrate attenuation than larger ones. From the results, small impoundments management is important for better water environments in a watershed in future, because it has a potential for nutrient removal that can be used more positively for improving water quality at a local scale.

    The effects of residence time and nutrient load on eutrophic conditions and phytoplankton variations were examined on six ponds highly influenced by agricultural activity in western Japan. Estimated residence times ranged from 7 to 2348 days, which decreased from summer to winter. The nutrient condition was totally in a N-rich and P-limited condition compared with the Redfield ratio in both summer and winter. The estimated budget of DIN, DIP and dissolved silica (DSi) suggests that the ponds acted as a sink of nutrients to the downstream environment throughout the year. Fluorescence was clearly higher in the shorter residence time ponds. It suggests that cyanobacteria with relatively low chlorophyll content were dominant in the longer residence time while other phytoplankton was dominant in the shorter residence time. The opposite trend in residence time and fluorescence from August to December suggests that the dominant primary producer changed from cyanobacteria to diatoms.

    本研究では、流域スケール(数km<SUP>2</SUP>)における地下水流動条件と地下水中でのNO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N減衰域との関係を明らかにすることを念頭に置き、瀬戸内海沿岸の同一島内に位置する地形勾配の異なる2つの沿岸農業流域(IKNおよびIKS)を対象とし、特に動水勾配とNO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N濃度減衰との関係に着目して考察を行った。その結果、1)両流域ともに地下水流動にともなうNO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N濃度の減衰に加え、pHの上昇および酸化還元電位(ORP<SUB>SHE</SUB>)の低下が確認された。さらにCl<SUP>-</SUP>濃度の分布から、NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N濃度の減衰には希釈のみでなく脱窒作用が寄与している可能性が高いことが明らかになった。また、2)NO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N濃度の減衰は、両流域ともに概ね地形勾配および動水勾配が0.04以下の下流域において顕著である傾向を示したが、最も顕著なNO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>-</SUP>-N濃度減衰域は、流域勾配がより大きなIKSでは海岸線近傍のみに存在するのに対し、流域勾配が比較的小さなIKNでは、内陸側の地形勾配が大きく減少する領域においても存在することが示唆された。

    脱窒過程は,地下水の硝酸汚染の改善および抑制にとって重要な自然減衰機能の一つである。著者らは,地下水中での脱窒過程に及ぼす地下水流動の影響に関連する従来の研究結果を整理するとともに,今後の課題について議論することを試みた。結果は以下のように要約される。1)地下水流動系における顕著な脱窒場は,主に地形の変換点を含む浅部の地下水の流出域および不圧・被圧を含む深部帯水層に相当すると考えられ,2)地下水流動系において硝酸が脱窒によってどの程度除去されるかは滞留時間によってコントロールされている可能性が高く,さらに3)ダルシー流束などの地下水流速は,脱窒反応が流動系において生じるか否かを決定する要因となりうる。<BR> 以上の結果から,著者らが考える今後の研究課題は,空間的・時間的な地下水流動条件の変化を考慮した"脱窒過程の定量化とそのスケールアップ"である。定量化にあたっては,脱窒反応の有無を制御し得る臨界地下水流速を推定することが最も重要であろう。また,定量的評価のスケールアップのためには,地形勾配のような地表面情報と地下水中での脱窒との関係を明らかにすることが重要であると考えられる。

    This research aims to clarify the nutrient exchange processes within the reservoir of a suburban river by considering the interaction between subsurface water and river water. The vertical distributions of nutrient concentrations in the water column and sediment pore water indicate a large concentration gradient of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus across the water sediment interface. NO3--N dominates in the water column, whereas NH4+-N and PO42--P dominate in the sediment pore water. The hydraulic gradient between the surface water and pore water in the sediment indicates that advection from the water column to the sediment occurs throughout the year, hence confirming surface water infiltration in this reservoir. Estimation of diffusive and advective nutrient flux showed that diffusive fluxes of NH4+-N and PO42--P are larger than advective fluxes and that this reservoir acts as a source of these components for the river system. However, diffusive fluxes of NO3--N and NO2--N indicated a downward (water column to sediment) flux (i.e. same direction as advective fluxes) as NO3--N and NO2--N are attenuated by denitrification near the surface sediment. This result suggests the reservoir works as an attenuation zone for nitrogen.

    Jakarta megacity is located on the coastal alluvial plain. Groundwater abstraction has been extremely large for the last 20 years; consequently groundwater levels have dramatically declined. In this research, we examined river and groundwater interaction under these conditions of serious groundwater decline. Research was carried on the catchment of the Ciliwung River, which flows from high volcanic mountains to the Java Sea through central Jakarta. The Rn-222 concentrations were measured at 20 sites from mid-stream to the river mouth. Results show that there are different interactions in upstream, midstream and downstream sections due to the expansion of groundwater depression resulting from huge abstractions.

    This study investigates the effect of climate change on nitrogen and phosphorus discharges from a watershed in western Japan. Numerical simulations for a 30-year period (1978-2007) demonstrate a decrease in the annual precipitation as well as in the loads of nitrogen and phosphorus, over the study period. Nutrient fluxes were estimated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The estimated phosphorus flux is more highly correlated with precipitation than the nitrogen flux. The results suggest a high correlation between phosphorus and discharge, but during the high precipitation years, phosphorus loads have decreased. A sensitivity analysis of parameters for phosphorus discharge showed that the most sensitive parameter is the support practice factor. Consequently, phosphorus flux could decrease from the Asahi River watershed in the future, because precipitation and flood events have decreased and so has the driving force for soil erosion, which is the primary source of the nutrients.

    本研究では, 100 km以上の海岸線で海底地下水流出(SGD)の空間分布を評価するため, 50 mメッシュ標高情報を利用した地下水流出モデルを,瀬戸内海中央部の海岸線(岡山県および香川県)に適用して50 m単位でSGDを見積もった。SGDでは,海岸線から最大で500 m内陸までの地形勾配をGISにより算出し,それに基づき,動水勾配及び地下水通過断面積を推定した後,ダルシー則によって年間のSGDを推定した。その結果は,以下のとおりである。1)沿岸域の地形勾配は香川県の方が岡山県に比べて緩やかな傾向を示し,特に,勾配が0と計算される埋立地に代表される0.002未満の海岸線の出現頻度も,香川県の方がより多かった。2)岡山県沿岸域におけるSGDは,ほぼ全域から1グリッドあたり0.2×10&lt;SUP&gt;5&lt;/SUP&gt; m&lt;SUP&gt;3&lt;/SUP&gt; year&lt;SUP&gt;-1&lt;/SUP&gt;以上であると見積もられた。一方,香川県沿岸では,埋め立て地のようなSGDが0と見積もられる海岸線が比較的多く分布していた。3)推定されたSGDは,岡山県沿岸全体で年間66.2 mm,香川県沿岸全体で年間48.1 mmと見積もられ,降水に対して5%前後に相当した。これらの値は,水収支法によって見積もった値と概ね一致した。

    The influence of human activities on the flow system and contamination of groundwater were investigated in Seoul City, South Korea, one of the largest Asian cities, using a combination of isotopes (delta D, T, delta N-15, delta O-18, delta S-34, and Sr-87/Sr-86). Eighteen representative groundwater and river water samples, which were collected over a wide area of the city, were compared with previously reported data. The distribution of stable isotopes (delta D and delta O-18) with groundwater potential data shows that recharged groundwater from either the surrounding mountainous area as well as the Han River and other surface streams discharged towards the northern-central part of the city, where a subway tunnel pumping station is located. It is suggested from T values (3.3 to 5.8 T.U.) that groundwater was recharged in the last 30 to 40 years. The delta S-34 and delta N-15 of SO24- and NO3- data were efficiently used as indicators of contamination by human activities. These isotopes clarified that the contribution of anthropogenic contaminants i.e., industrial and household effluents, waste landfills, and fertilizers, are responsible for the enrichment by SO42- (>30 ppm as SO42-) and NO3- (>20 ppm as NO3-) of groundwater. The Sr-87/Sr-86 values of groundwater vary (0.71326 to 0.75058) in accordance with the host rocks of different origins. Mineral elements such as Ca are also suggested to be derived naturally from rocks. The groundwater under Seoul City is greatly affected by transportation of pollutants along the groundwater flow controlled by subway tunnel pumping, contributing to the degradation of water quality in urbanized areas.     The authors conducted the study to confirm the process and potential of denitrification in the groundwater at the mountainous catchment (IK) located on the small islands of southern Japan and the Yellow river delta (YD), China. The relation between NO3--N concentration and δ15N indicates that denitrification process occurred in the coastal groundwater of both catchments. Moreover, at the YD, the same trend was also confirmed in the groundwater recharge area. Simple in situ injection experiment was conducted at the observation boreholes located on the coastal area to confirm the denitrification rate. The result shows that denitrification occurred in the groundwater of 3 m and 30 m depths at IK. However, it was not confirmed at the 15 m characterized by relatively large groundwater velocity. On the contrary, extremely high potential of denitrification is confirmed at the YD compared with that in IK. These results suggest that denitrification in the coastal groundwater is more significant at the YD than IK, and it suggests that groundwater velocity have an effect of denitrification process. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group.

    To evaluate the nitrate attenuation potential in the groundwater of Jakarta metropolitan area, we tried to examine the mixing and denitrification process with toe groundwater flow. The hydraulic potential distribution shows the direction of overall horizontal groundwater flow is from the mountainside to Jakarta Bay (south to north). Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3N) concentrations in the shallow groundwater at depths of <100 m were more than 600 μ M -1 in the mountainside. However, it declined to less than 50 μ M-1 during 5 km of horizontal groundwater flow. The variation in nitrogen stable isotope ratio (δ15N) shows slightly increasing trend with groundwater flow. The relation between Cl- and NO 3N concentrations, and NO3N and δ15N suggests that the mixing and denitrification process occurs in the shallow groundwater. Based on these results, it is estimated that approx. 5% of nitrate denitrified during 1 km of horizontal groundwater flow. Compared with the result in the Yellow River Delta, the nitrate attenuation potential in the groundwater is relatively low in Jakarta. However, it is suggested that nitrate in the groundwater is denitrified before it reaches the sea. Copyright © 2009 IAHS Press.

    Yellow River is one of the largest rivers in the world and provides many sands to the sea. There is the large delta of Yellow River in the lower reach, and it is continuing to grow up by sediment from the river. However, some environmental issues occur such as the problem which river water can not reach to the river mouth from depletion of river water by overuse since 1970's. In this region which has experienced some environmental issues, groundwater research include the resistivity survey were conducted for the evaluation of the distribution of freshwater and saltwater under the delta in September 2003, May 2004 and September 2004. According to the results of field research, it is assumed that there is fresh groundwater in the shallow part and south of this delta, and saltwater widely in other region. We also applied the age dating of groundwater using carbon fourteen method. As a result, there are young saltwater near the shore and paleo-seawater in the center of this delta.

    The seasonal variation in the nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N) discharge by groundwater to the sea was evaluated from the monitoring data of hydraulic potential and NO3--N concentrations in the groundwater of a small coastal agricultural catchment. A large variation in the NO3--N concentration (<0.05 - 5.3 mg L-1) was found in the shallower groundwater of the coastal area. These results suggest that NO3--N attenuation via denitrification influences the seasonal variation in NO3--N concentrations. Furthermore, significant NO3--N attenuation was confirmed in relatively small Darcy flux (<1.8 x 10-6 cm/s). The estimated NO3--N flux varied (0.006 - 0.8 kg d-1) with changes in the NO3--N concentration. Annual groundwater discharge is estimated to be 1.7-fold higher than river discharge, while groundwater NO3--N flux accounts for approximately 70% of river flux owing to the attenuation of NO3--N in coastal areas.

    To evaluate the groundwater resource in the coastal area of the Ashida River, which is one of the catchment of the Seto Inland Sea, we tried to estimate the variation of the volume of "fresh" groundwater (no seawater intrusion) before and after the construction of the river-mouth dam. The result suggests that it has increased since the dam construction in 1978, apparently by the shift of the brackish-freshwater boundary from inland to the coastal line. The volume of brackish water was estimated to be approximately twice that before 1978. The result suggests that the coastal groundwater is a valuable freshwater resource in the study area for the future. Copyright © 2009 IAHS Press.

    Asian megacities have severe pollution problems in both coastal and urban areas. In addition, the groundwater potential has decreased and land subsidence has occurred because of intensive groundwater pumping in urban areas. To prevent the adverse effects of urbanization on groundwater quality, it is necessary to confirm the changes in groundwater flow and contaminant transport caused by urbanization. We examined the effects of urbanization on contaminant transport in groundwater. The research areas were located around Bangkok, Thailand, and akarta, Indonesia, cities with populations of approximately 8 and 12 million, respectively. Each metropolitan city is located on a river delta and is adjacent to a bay. We measured the water level and collected water samples at boreholes at multiple depths (100 to 200 m) in 2004 and 2006 in Bangkok and Jakarta, respectively. The current hydraulic potential is below sea level in both cities because of prior excess abstraction of groundwater. As a result, the direction of groundwater flow is now downward in the coastal area. The Cl- concentration and delta O-18 distributions in groundwater suggest that the decline in hydraulic potential has caused the intrusion of seawater and shallow groundwater into deep groundwater. Concentrations of Mn and NO3(-)-N in groundwater suggest the intrusion of these contaminants from shallow to deep aquifers with downward groundwater flow and implies an accumulation of contaminants in deep aquifers. Therefore, it is important to recognize the possibility of future contaminant transport with the discharge of deep groundwater into the sea after the recovery of groundwater potential in the coastal areas.     The purpose of our study is to demonstrate the effect of surface and groundwater interaction on nitrate attenuation in the coastal aquifer of a small alluvial fan catchment in southern Japan. NO3--N concentrations in the shallow groundwater decrease from the midstream area to the downstream area with groundwater flow. The inverse relationship between HCO3- -C and NO3--N suggests biochemical denitrification process in the downstream groundwater. This is also supported by relatively low ORP (Oxidation-Reduction-Potential) in the groundwater of the downstream area. Based on the results, it is suggested that mixing with domestic wastewater with high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leads to supply of organic carbon to the groundwater. From the seasonal variation of NO3--N attenuation, it is suggested that the effect of denitrification on the downstream groundwater is smaller in the high-flow season than that in the lowflow because of large groundwater velocity. However, estimated flux of NO3--N attenuation is larger in the high-flow period because of high groundwater discharge. These results revealed the important role of interaction between surface water and groundwater in the alluvial fan on nitrate reduction in the coastal area. Copyright © 2008 IAHS Press.

    In order to forecast the variation of nutrient load with climate change, the long-term change in rainfall and its effect on river runoff in a study catchment were investigated and related to change in nutrient discharge to the ocean. In the study area there has been a decreasing rainfall trend for 40 years but the frequency of large rainfall events has remained constant. The annual runoff decreased by 60 mm in the last 40 years, but large annual runoff amounts were observed in years with large rainfall events. The nutrient discharge also reflected the rainfall and runoff trends. DN load has increased in the long term, while in drought years DP load has increased, reflecting the dominant groundwater contribution with significantly higher DP concen-trations in such conditions.     The current condition of nitrate (NO3-) contamination in groundwater and its effect on the marine environment were evaluated in the Yellow River Delta, northeastern China. In the groundwater recharge area, NO3- contamination is suggested to be more severe compared with that in the groundwater discharge area. Also a relatively large amount of nitrogen is estimated to have accumulated in the aquifer of the recharge area. However, distribution of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N) concentrations and δ15N implied a denitrification process in the aquifer of the coastal area. In addition, a high rate of denitrification was indicated there by in situ experiments involving injected tracer water with high concentrations of NO3--N. Based on these results, it is suggested that a large amount of nitrate will be removed before it reaches the sea. Copyright © 2007 IAHS Press.

    To confirm the semi-diurnal and seasonal variation in nutrient flux with the dynamics in groundwater-seawater interaction, we conducted intensive observations at 25 piezometers in a tidal flat over a distance of 100 m across a steep-sloped island. Based on the chloride balance, groundwater was very well-mixed with seawater under the tidal flat. Nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3--N) concentrations declined from >20 to near 0 mg L-1 along the groundwater flowpath from the hillslope to the tidal flat. In addition, nitrate concentrations in pore water of the tidal flat were lower (at 0.1 mg L-1) than in seawater. These results suggest that the reduction process of NO3--N occurred in both contaminated groundwater and seawater. Discharge of inorganic nitrogen by groundwater was confirmed offshore. The suspected source was nitrogen mineralization of organic compounds and seawater recirculation. Phosphorus was produced offshore and transported from the land area. Seasonal variations in nutrient dynamics at the tidal flat were also confirmed. Copyright © 2007 IAHS Press.

    In order to demonstrate the nitrate transport process from land to the sea, variations in the NO3--N flux of river water were investigated, and the NO3--N flux of groundwater was estimated in a small coastal alluvial fan catchment covered by orange groves. The results are summarized as follows: 1) In the base-flow period, the NO3--N flux of river water decreased from the midstream to the downstream area with the deduction in runoff; 2) At the peak of a storm event with 11 mm of total rainfall, the NO3--N flux increased up to about 16 times that in the base-flow period. The total discharge of NO3--N during that event was estimated to be equal to that of 4 days during the base-flow period; 3) The NO3--N concentration in groundwater was more than 20 mg L-1 at the midstream area, whereas it had declined to less than 2.0 mg L-1 in the downstream area. Based on these results, we estimated the NO3--N discharge by groundwater to the sea to be about 2.4% of the annual nitrogen input from fertilizer application, suggesting that NO3--N was removed from groundwater by denitrification in the downstream area.

    A river contains self-purification mechanisms such as denitrification and assimilation by plants. Although these mechanisms have extensively been studied, during a rainfall event when a river's flow differs from its normal condition, it is not clear what effect this has on its self-purification mechanisms. Therefore, to clarify the transformation and self-purification process of nitrogen, we focused on attention on variations in the discharge and nitrogen flux following three rainfall events in the Kurose River in Hiroshima Prefecture. Our observation site was put established 17 km from the riverhead. Water reaching the site flows through both urban and agricultural area. During three rainfall events, we sampled the river water at 2-hours intervals using an automatic water sampler and measured the water level in the river by means of level indicator. Water samples were analyzed for dissolved nitrogen (DN), NO3--N, NO2--N, and NH4+-N. The discharge was calculated from measured water level data and H-Q curve, and the flux from the product of concentration and discharge. Our results showed that DN flux varied inversely to variations in the discharge, and that its main factor was a decrease in the NO3--N flux. This indicates that the variations in upstream conditions involved changes in the discharge influenced the nitrogen discharge in the river.

The authors conducted the study to demonstrate the nitrate (NO3-) transport and reduction process in the coastal groundwater of Seto Inland Sea, southern Japan. The results are summarized as follows: 1) NO3--N concentrations in the shallow groundwater were about 30mgL-1 in the midstream area of the catchment, whereas it decreased less than 2.0mgL-1 in the downstream area toward the groundwater flow direction. The inverse relationship between HCO3--C and NO3--N concentrations suggests biochemical denitrification process in the shallow groundwater. This is also supported by the low ratio of seawater contribution (<1.0%), and relatively low ORP in the groundwater of the downstream area; 2) The NO3--N concentrations in the downstream area were relatively higher in the High-flow season than that in the Low-flow season. This result indicates that the NO3--N discharge by shallow groundwater in the High-flow is larger than that in the Low-flow season; 3) NO3--N concentrations in deep groundwater were higher than that in shallow groundwater at the downstream area. This result suggests that leaching of organic matters from the upper sedimentary layer and groundwater recharge by the river water leads to supply of DOC to the shallow groundwater, and as a result it significantly increase denitrification process in shallow aquifer; 4) Based on these results, NO3--N discharge by groundwater from the study catchment is estimated to be about 5.0% of the annual nitrogen input from fertilizer application at orange groves.
