ブプレウルム（Bupleurum rotundifolium L.）は、種子のロットによって発芽や生育が異なることが生産上大きな問題となっている.本実験では種子のロット（No.021793、025090、026247、027668）および採種時期が生育、発芽および開花に及ぼす影響を調査した.ロットによって発芽率は異なった.発蕾および開花は025090で最も早く、026247で最も遅く、027668と021793はその中間だった.自家採種種子は採種時期により発芽が異なり、6月中旬から7月上旬の高温期に採種した種子は発芽率が著しく高かった.しかし、高温期採種種子は著しく開花が遅れ、節数が多く、切り花品質が低下したのに対し、低温期採種種子は開花が早く、切り花形質が優れる傾向があった.種子のロットによって生育や開花が異なった.親個体のロットによる違いがほとんど認められなかったので、採種種子の性質の違いは親個体のロットによる違いよりも採種時期の環境条件の方が大きく影響していると考えられた.

ピート栽培における培地量と給液制御方法がイチゴの生育と収量に及ぼす影響

イチゴの養液栽培における株当たりの培地量と給液制御方法（給液頻度）の影響について'女峰'、'アスカルビー'、'章姫'、'とちおとめ'の4品種を用いて検討した.本実験で最小の培地量0.6L／株でも給液頻度が生育・収量に影響することはなかった.培地量が少なくなるほど総収量、平均果実重と収穫終了時の地下部乾物重は減少する傾向にあったが、収穫果実数と収穫終了後のランナー発生、子株の成長には差が認められなかった.収量と根の乾物重にはピートバッグ（2.25L／株）とボウル型プランター（0.6-1.5L／株）の間に大きな差があった.両者と培地量との間には有意な非線形（2次）の回帰が認められ、根域や容器外縁の形状、排水性など培地量以外の要因が収量と根の成長に影響している可能性が高いと考えられた.

スプレーカーネーションの灌水同時施肥栽培における栽植方式が収量および切り花品質に及ぼす影響

カーネーションの灌水同時施肥栽培に適した栽植方式を明らかにするため、2条並木植え（25株・m-2、2条高密度区）、2条疎植植え（12.5株・m-2、2条低密度区）および4株列植え（25株・m-2、4株区）が、収量および切り花品質に及ぼす影響について、スプレーカーネーション'バーバラ'および'チェリーテッシノ'を供試して検討した.総切り花本数は'バーバラ'では、2条高密度区と4株区で差は認められず、2条低密度区は、2条高密度区および4株区の約60％であった.'チェリーテッシノ'では、2条高密度区は4株区より15％多かった.2条低密度区は、2条高密度区の約60％、4株区の約70％の総切り花本数であった.切り花品質は、2条高密度区と4株区では、両品種ともに処理区間に差は認められなかったが、2条低密度区は、切り花重、茎径が増大し、2条高密度区および4株区よりボリュームが増大した.以上の結果、2条並木植えは4株列植えと比較して品質は変わらず、同程度以上の収量を得られるので、カーネーションの灌水同時施肥栽培には、2条並木植えが適することが示唆された.

トルコギキョウの吸水種子の低温処理後に用いる播種用資材として多糖類の一種であるキサンタンガムの実用性を調査した。キサンタンガム濃度が0.125〜0.5％の範囲であれば、子葉展開率や成苗率に差がないことが明らかになった。また、これまで用いられてきた高吸水性高分子化合物と比較して子葉展開率は同等であり、成苗率は明らかに大きくなった。これらの結果から、キサンタンガムは、トルコギキョウの流体播種用資材として実用性が高いと考えられた。

ポリエチレンポットの廃棄は現在、大きな環境問題になっている。ポリポットを用いない花壇苗生産を開発するために、まず、熱融着性ポリエステル繊維を利用して固化した培地の特性を調査した。続いて、この固化培地における栄養繁殖性ペチュニアの生育を調査した。最後に、ポリポットを使用せずに栽培する場合、灌水方法がペチュニアの生育に及ぼす影響を調査した。培地からの水蒸発量には培地固化による影響は認められなかった。ポリポットがない培地の水減少量はポリポットがある培地の約2倍であった。無固化培地では根鉢を形成していないと培地は崩れ、挿し芽20日後においても半数以上の個体で培地が崩れた。固化培地では発根前でも培地が崩れなかった。発根および鉢上げ時の草丈、葉数、生体重は培地の固化による差はほとんど認められなかった。定植時の草丈、花蕾数、葉数、生体重にはセル用およびポット用培地の固化による有意な差は認められなかった。無固化培地ではポットがないと培地が崩壊し、特に頭上灌水で崩壊程度が大きかった。底面灌水区と頭上多量灌水区では定植時の生育にほとんど違いは認められなかった。しかし、頭上少量灌水区では生育が抑制され、ポットレスにすることにより生育が著しく抑制されたが、固化培地で緩和された、以上の結果、養水分管理を適切に行えば、培地を固めても、ポリポットがなくても、ペチュニアの生育に差が生じないことが明らかになった。また、固化培地は崩れないため、定植作業が容易で、作業時間も短かった。従って、固化培地を用いたポットレス花壇苗生産は十分実用性があると考えられた。

In Zantedeschia rehmannii Engl. tuber storage at 1-5 degrees C for 30 days is suitable for breaking dormancy, and a temperature of 10 degrees C is suitable for flower bud initiation Thus, effects of the combination of VC and 10 degrees C during tuber storage on growth and flowering were investigated. Tubers which were not given low temperature (< 15 degrees C) were stored for 50 days. Initial storage temperature was either 1 degrees C or 10 degrees C, and tubers were moved to alternate temperatures 10, 20, 30, and 40 days after storage. There were no significant differences among treatments in days to emergence, although days to flowering of plants stored at 10 degrees C 20 days followed by 1 degrees C 30 days were shorter than those of other treatments. Storage temperature and duration had no significant effect on anthocyanin content, cut flower weight, malformed flower percentage, cut flower length, and bract length. Percentage of flowering and number of flowers per plant decreased as storage duration at 10 degrees C decreased. Flower production increased remarkably in plants stored at 1 degrees C for 10 days followed by 10 degrees C for 40 days and at 1 degrees C for 20 days followed by 10 degrees C for 30 days because secondary flowers were harvested. It is thought that dormancy is broken at any temperature for 50 days, however, storage at 10 degrees C for > 30 days is suitable for increase in flowering. Our results suggest that tuber storage at 1 degrees C then 10 degrees C may be desirable when Z. rehmannii is forced in summer.

キク'精興の誠'に発生する葉身の黄斑発生について、定植期および培地が発生程度に及ぼす影響を調査した。黄斑が発生するまでには日数を要し、かつその進行は緩慢であった。黄斑発生は砂壌土で顕著であり、ピートモス砂混合培地で軽減した。培地が異なっても、発生の大小は似ていた。定植期によって黄斑発生は増減し、高温強光条件下で顕著であり、低温弱光条件下で減少した。黄斑の発生には環境条件が、特に温度や光条件が大きく関与しているものと考えられた。

Effects of the nutrient level at planting time on growth and quality of cut flower in spray chrysanthemums were investigated. An equal amount of fertilizer measuring approximately N 267 mg/shoot was applied to each plot with different basal fertilizer ratios of 0 %, 25 %, 75 % and 100 %, respectively. The residual nutrients divided into 10 equal dosages were applied every week. For reference, fertilizer was also applied according to the conventional recommended method (N 500 mg/shoot). Initial growth of plants in 25 % and 50 % plots was better than that in the other plots. Necrosis due to excessive fertilization was observed in the leaves of plants in the 75 % and 100 % plots. Regardless of the ratio of basal fertilizer to total application, the quality of cut flowers was good and marketable. The quality of cut flowers from the conventional plot was lower than that from other plots due to excessive growth of leaves and stems. It is desirable to maintain the initial nutrient levels at planting time in a range between 50 and 300 ppm nitrate using a soil solution in spray chrysanthemum production.

Changes in the evapotranspiration (ETP) of stock (Matthiola incana R. Br.) cv. White Dorse seedlings in a cell flat were measured, and regression analyses were conducted to investigate the relationships between ETP and environmental factors (solar radiation ; SR, saturation deficit ; SD and air temperature ; AT). In each sowing month, ETP was positively correlated with SR, SD and AT. Coefficients of determination (R²) were higher than 0.81 in SR throughout the year and larger than those in SD or AT in most sowing months. Seasonal variation of R² in the regression lines was also lowest between ETP and SR compared to the other two factors. Thus, ETP was strongly affected by SR in each sowing month. When the yearly data were pooled, the regression line between ETP (y;mg·plant^-1) and SR (x;MJ·M^-2) was expressed as follows ; y = 276.2x+24.1 (R²= 0.873). Although R² of a multiple regression equation became 0.921 when SD and AT were included as explanatory variables, there was little difference between the values of R^-2-. A simple regression line of ETP and SR could estimate ETP. Change in ETP during seedling growth caused by the increase in the total leaf area was only 1.7 fold in comparison to changes in total dry weight and leaf area which were 10 and 7 fold, respectively. ETP at night was considered negligible in the estimation of ETP. When the transplants of stock are grown with an automatic fertigation system for a cell flat (12ml cell volume), supplying every 5 to 6 MJ·m^-2 cumulative solar radiation may be a suitable value for fertigation frequency.

We demonstrated the practical utility of solar radiation mediated fertigation control for transplant production in a cell flat with an automatic ebb-and-flow fertigation system. Furthermore, we investigated seasonal changes in growth and productivity of stock (Matthiola incana R. Br.) cv. White Dorse as affected by fertigation frequency controlled in response to solar radiation (5 or 10 MJ · m^-2) and scheduled time course (once or twice per day). The shoot dry weight of transplants and fresh weight of cut flowers were higher in plants fertigated with every 5 MJ · m^-2 of solar radiation, sown between late April and late July. In plants sown during other periods, there was no significant difference in growtn and productivity among plants fertigated differently. When the plants sown in June were fertigated twice per day, the exposure was 5 MJ · m^-2 in average of cumulatlve solar radiation from fertigation to subseauent fertigation. However, the maximum cumulative value exceeded 8 MJ · m^-2. Water stress caused by the high solar radiation accompanied by high temperature and large saturation deficit may have resulted in reduced growth of the transplants and decreased quality of the cut flowers. When the stock transplants were grown in a cell flat (220 cells of 12ml cell volume), suffcient but not excess fertigation could be obtained by supplying nutrient solution every 5 MJ · m^-2 of solar radiation with an automatic ebb-and-flow fertigation system.

Effects of nutrient deficiency (N, P and K) on color development and anthocyanin accumulation in strawberry fruit were determined. In fruits of N deficient `Nyoho' red color began to develop faster, while L* value and hue angle were lower at 24 days after anthesis (DAA) compared to those of control or P and K deficient plants, but there was no significant difference at 27 to 36 DAA. The concentration of total anthocyanins was significantly higher in N deficient fruits than that in control at 24 DAA, but was significantly lower in N deficient fruits compared to that in controls at 33 or 36 DAA. In case of 'Toyonoka', there was no effect of treatment on color development and anthocyanin concentration. In three other cultivars (Tochiotome, Sachinoka and Hokowase), L* value, hue and chroma were significantly higher, and the concentration of total anthocyanins was also lower in N deficient fruits compared to the other treatments. It was concluded that the anthocyanin synthesis. in strawberry fruits may be reduced by N deficiency.

Two experiments were conducted to test the effects of reducing water and nutrient stresses on vegetative growth of chrysanthemum cv. Pinky in restricted root zone volume (10&acd;1000ml). In Exp. 1, plants were grown using continuous flowing hydroponic system (CFHS). In Exp. 2, plants grown on a substrate were supplied nutrient solution via a drip system (SDS) 1, 3, 8 or 13 times per day until leaching occurred. In CFHS, stem length and node number were unaffected by root zone volume 25 days after planting (DAP). Total leaf area, shoot and root dry weights decreased with a decrease in root zone volume ; there were small differences among the plants grown in different containers, e.g. shoot dry weight of plants grown in 10 ml containers was about 80% of that in 1000 ml containers. Shoot to root ratio slightly increased with a decrease in root zone volume. In SDS, reduction in stem elongation was observed 14 DAP in plants grown in 30 ml containers fertigated only once a day. However, there was little difference in stem lengths among the plants grown in different containers 28 DAP when fertigated 8 times per day. Shoot growth 35 DAP was reduced with a decrease in root zone volume, however in plants grown in 30 ml or 100 ml containers, reduction of shoot growth markedly decreased with an increase in fertigation frequency. Root zone volume had a little effect on shoot growth if plants were fertigated 8 or 13 times. Irrespective of fertigation frequency, root dry weight increased with an increase in root zone volume. Shoot to root ratio was unaffected by root zone volume in plants fertigated 1 or 3 times but the ratio in plants treated 8 or 13 times increased with decrease in root zone volume. Thus, limiting of water and nutrients is the main factor in growth suppression caused by root zone restriction. Hence, vegetative growth of chrysanthemum plants in small container (≦100ml), e.g. cell or pot transplants production, can be sustained by the application of water and nutrients 8 times per day.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of cell (root zone) volume during rooting and transplanting age in two cut flower species. Cuttings of carnation, Dianthus caryophyllus L. 'Nora' and Gypsophila paniculata L. 'Bristol Fairy', were grown in trays, comprised of 406 and 128 cells pre-filled with 6 and 20 ml potting medium/cell, respectively. 'Nora' cuttings were transplanted when 20 to 50 days old at 10-days intervals, whereas 'Bristol Fairy' cuttings were transplanted when 22 to 52 days old. 'Nora' was less affected of cell volume in respect of rootball formation, i.e., 30-day old transplants with 6 and 20 ml volume capacities, the rootballs occupied 13.5 and 6.3% of the cell, respectively ; whereas in 40-day old transplants, the rootballs occupied 93.8% of the cell. Contrarily, 'Bristol Fairy' was profoundly affected that 52-day old transplants with 6 ml and 12 ml volume capacities occupied 100 and 85% of the cell, respectively. Older plants with rootballs were easier to transplant than the younger ones. However, the older ones grew slower after transplanting than the younger ones. Younger transplants had more succulent roots per plant than the older ones. The number of days from pinching to cut flower harvest in 'Nora' increased with delayed transplanting. The older transplants had longer stems, heavier flowers, and more nodes per plant than younger ones. Flower quality varied less among plants raised from the different cell volumes. Older transplants of 'Bristol Fairy' not only had longer harvesting periods, but they also had weaker shoot growth following pinching which resulted in low flower production. Younger transplants had fewer nodes per stem. Cuttings grown from 6 ml cell volume capacities required fewer days from pinching to flower harvest than those grown in 20 ml ones. Our study indicates that transplanting 'Nora' cuttings is optimal if done before rootballs are formed for production in trays. Transplants with full rootballs are sufficiently suitable in commercial production for 'Nora', whereas transplanting of 'Bristol Fairy' cuttings should be done before rootball formation occurs on account of their slow growth rate.

Characteristics of mineral uptake in spray chrysanthemums grown under a hydroponic system were investigated in relation to growing seasons and developmental stages. The amounts of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, taken up per plant, differed markedly over the growing seasons and between 'Sei Aloha' and 'Talk'. However, the ratios of P, K, Ca, and Mg to N uptake were similar over both the growing seasons and cultivars. The ratios obtained from the nutrient solution analyses were P/N 13.3±0.4%, K/N 102.6±3.4%, Ca/N 29.6±0.7% and Mg/N 10.0±0.4%. The ratios corresponded to those estimated via plant tissue analyses. Uptake of 4.3-5.2mg N fertilizer led to an increase of 1g in fresh weight. The rate of N uptake steadily rose after planting until flower buds became visible. The upward trend continued during bud development but decreased rapidly towards harvest. The ratios of P/N and K/N decreased from 16.2% and 134.2% to 8.4% and 69.5%, respectively, from the vegetative growth to the flowering stages. The ratios of Ca/N and Mg/N varied slightly.

The effects of root zone volume on the growth of snapdragon under optimum nutrient and water supply in soil culture or continuous flowing hydroponic system (CFHS) were investigated for seven weeks. In soil culture, seeds were sown in 30, 100, 300, and 1000 ml containers and fertigated with a 3/8 strength Enshi-shoho nutrient solution at 6-10 kPa (pF1.7-2.0) of soil moisture tension. In CFHS, plants were set on one reservoir and the volume of each plant was limited to 10, 30, 100, 300, and 1000 ml using cylindrical containers. A 1/8 strength Enshi-shoho nutrient solution flowed continuously at 170 ml / minute into the containers of CFHS for each plant.
In soil culture, shoot dry weight at harvest significantly increased with increasing root zone volume. Led area and stem length of plants grown in 30 ml containers were smaller than that of others at three weeks after sowing. In CFHS, shoot dry weights of plants grown in 10 and 30 ml containers at harvest were lower than those of others in large containers grown on CFHS. Stem length, node number and leaf area were unaffected by root zone volume. In soil culture, reduced shoot growth was observed at a very young stage when the roots made contact with the container walls, but not on CFHS. These results indicate that the difference in growth of plants in soil culture was caused mainly by some substances retarding growth, probably originating from the roots rather than nutrient or water supply.

The grading or quality evaluation of chrysanthemum cut flowers is traditionally performed by experts trained in the grading based on their skilled sensibility. In this paper, an attempt was made to draw some quantitative criteria from the traditional evaluation process by scoring the quality of chrysanthemum cut flowers. The pictorial images of forty-five chrysanthemum cut flowers of which morphological features were intentionally varied were recorded on a video tape. The video images were shown to two independent experts who were asked to score those cut flowers based on the video images. Two replications were made. The results revealed that there were significant differences between two sets of scores given by two experts respectively. There were also large difference between the first evaluation and the second one. The results imply that the human evaluation is vague and uncertain. The measurements were taken for cut flower length, length between flower and the uppermost node, main stem diameter, curvature of main stem, average internode length, area of leaves and stems, and sizes of leaves in order to investigate the relationship between physical features of cut flowers and experts' decision criteria. It seemed that the most of measured physical features were related to experts' decision criteria. No straight applications of these physical features to the grading parameters seem to be possible because there was not enough statistical substantiality. There must be some complex combinations between physical features that make experts decide the quality of individual cut flower. One of the well known functions of neural network is a classifier that can handle this type of problem.

In the previous installment of this series, the relationship between human being's evaluation and morphological features extracted from chrysanthemum cut flower was investigated in order to quantify the vague criteria that has been established based on human sense. It was also found that the individual morphological feature did not co-relate to human evaluation scores. It was considered that some combination of the features might improve the co-relation. The machine learning system such as the neural networks was considered to be usefully to automate the cut flower evaluation process. In this paper, length of cut flower, stem diameter, leaf area, length between flower and top leaf, leaf length, and, stem bend were selected for input parameters of neural networks whose output parameter was a human evaluation score. The neural networks were trained by KNT (Kalman Neuro Training) method. From the results, it was observed that output value satisfactorily agreed the human evaluation score. The error was less than the human error resulted from the human double check procedure. It was also confirmed that the evaluation by the neural networks with several appropriate features was effective. In addition, a feasibility of automated cut flower evaluation system, which does not involve human error, was found.

Changes in anatomy and receptivity of pistils of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cv. Ai-Berry and Nyoho after anthesis were investigated. 1. In the cymose truss of the 'Ai-Berry', the distal pistils of the primary (first) flower to open are small and immature, whereas proximal pistils near the base of the receptacle are fully mature and receptive to pollen. In some cases, the stigma of distal pistils are not receptive even 10 days after anthesis. Contrarily, on the tertiary (5th) flowers of 'Ai-Berry' and primary flower of 'Nyoho', the differences in size and the stage of development between the distal and proximal pistils are small and the pistils are equally receptive to pollen at anthesis. 2. The number of undeveloped distal achenes on the fruit decreased if pollination was delayed in 'Ai-Berry', but the stigma on the basal pistils lost their receptivity 4 days after anthesis. Thus, on flowers pollinated 4 or more days after anthesis, the basal pistils failed to set seeds and developed poorly, giving rise to malformed fruits. 3. Malformed fruits in 'Ai-Berry' may be reduced by controlling the timing and the duration of the pollination period, but this is difficult because of the wide range in pistil maturity from the apex to the base of the receptacle. To overcome this problem of malformation in 'Ai-Berry', cultural conditions which might narrow this range during flower development need investigation.
