    Abstract

    This chapter examines the emergence and development of lacquer production in Japan as the first evidence of an artificial organic compound. It discusses how the invention of pottery can be considered as a technological and cognitive precondition for it. Lacquer technology was invented as human-plant interaction increased in the warming climate of the early Holocene (ca. 7,500–8,000 cal bp). The invention of lacquer technology was a significant step forward in human history as it required a process of artificial and irreversible chemical change. In East Asia, pottery appeared in the final stage of the Pleistocene. It was also a new material created by mixing clay, water, various tempers, and firing over a flame. The invention of pottery reinforced the image schema of container and led to a new type of cooking: Stew with different kinds of food. These activities of making and using pottery may have prompted the invention of lacquer technology. Based on the archaeological evidence of pottery and lacquer in East Asia, the invention process of new material is discussed with reference to the environment, climate, material, sedentariness, and image schemas to gain a new understanding of the integrative relationship between mind, body, and material.

    Summary

    We present new absolute archaeointensity data from six archaeological sites situated in the Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The materials studied are well-dated fragments from pottery, ceramic coffins and haniwa artifacts. Their ages range from 160 AD to 675 AD, covering the Late Yayoi and Kofun periods. Rock magnetic experiments suggest the presence of magnetite and/or Ti-magnetite as the main carrier of the remanence, with a possible minor contribution of higher coercivity minerals. After thermal demagnetization experiments, the most magnetically stable samples were selected for archaeointensity analysis performed following the double-heating method proposed by Thellier and modified by Coe. Partial thermoremanent magnetization (pTRM) checks and pTRM tail-checks were performed for monitoring possible chemical alterations during heating. All measurements were corrected for both anisotropy and cooling-rate effects. Successful archaeointensity determinations, following rigorous selection criteria, were obtained for samples from all the investigated archaeological sites. Compared with literature data from Japan, the new high-quality data show significantly lower intensity values. They also reveal possible fast secular variation changes during the Late Yayoi period and very weak geomagnetic intensity field around 630 AD. Such values offer evidence of a possible recurrence of weak intensity field in East Asia, suggesting an ancient recurrence of the West Pacific Anomaly. The new data might change the archaeomagnetic field models interpretations in the area, even though more data are still necessary to better understand the secular variation in Japan and the temporal evolution of the geomagnetic field's behavior in East Asia.

    Kofuns are burial mounds of ancient Japan (3rd-7th century CE, defined as Kofun Period). The construction history and archaeological significance of Kofuns of the Late Kofun Period (6th-7th century) still need to be characterized. This study dealt with Tobiotsuka Kofun (Okayama Prefecture, Japan) and aimed to investigate if diversity and structure of soil fungal communities, and their relationships with soil characteristics, beyond reflecting present vegetation, may be informative on the construction history of the burial mound. In particular the analyses aimed to verify the supposed presence of a boundary between the original hill and the potential anthropic backfill. Soil fungal communities were characterized by high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq technology), at the ground and through different archaeological soil layers. Approximately 1.5 x 10(6) high quality ITS2 sequences, clustered in 1875 OTUs, were obtained from 59 sampling points, distributed inside the burial chamber and on the Kofun external slopes. Heterogeneity and vertical distribution of fungal communities, considered in terms of taxonomic and trophic groups, generally showed a compatible pattern with present-day topographic conditions and vegetation. However, the chemical soil analyses and fungal distribution with depth, in particular that of saprotrophic fungi, cannot be explained by natural soil development and ecological context only, and point towards the presence of a former topsoil layer that was disturbed and at least partially buried by the Kofun construction.

    Anthropomorphic artifacts have unique characteristics, as they are closely related to social and technical cognition and contain complex information. However, their meanings can be elusive. The present study aimed to examine how modern Japanese people perceive the faces of Japanese prehistoric (13,000???800 cal BC) and protohistoric (AD 250???600) anthropomorphic artifacts by focusing on the facial expressions and impressions of clay figure faces. The study included 75 Japanese participants and 131 figure faces from three historical periods. The results showed that participants perceived the prehistoric and protohistoric facial expressions differently (as being happier, sadder, and less surprised), depending on the period they were created in. We examined the relationships between impressions and perceived expressions of the figure faces, and found that faces became more complicated due to the introduction of facial morphometric features. The results may be applicable to understanding the variation in Japanese figures, especially the faces.

    本報告では、戦争の起源や要因をめぐる錯綜した研究状況を整理し、考古学的に確認される事象を踏まえて、戦争を促進する要因、抑制する要因について検討する。戦争は、偏狭な利他主義、集団ないしリーダーへの忠誠、権威に対する従順さといった道徳的規範を土台として展開する社会行動である。暴力的な攻撃は人間以外の動物にも広く見られるが、戦争をするのが人間だけなのは、人間だけが道徳を持つからである。戦争の起源は人類史の初源に遡るとする説が台頭しているが、体系的な受傷人骨データをみると先史時代の狩猟採集社会で戦争が頻発していたとは考えられない。狩猟採集社会においては、平等主義、分配の重視、自主性の尊重、そして血縁関係を超えた相互扶助や寛大さの尊重という道徳的規範が、それを共有する人々の相互監視と評判の力によって保持されており、それに基づく文化的システムが権力の集中化と集団間の暴力を抑制する。こうした文化的・認知的傾向は、親族関係を超えて平和的な関係を取り結ぶことが適応的であったために、先史時代の遊動的狩猟採集社会において進化したと考えられる。

    The aim of this paper is to propose a new insight on the changing burial practice by regarding it as a part of the cognitive system for maintaining complex social relationships. Development of concentrated burials and their transformation in Japanese prehistory are examined to present a specific case of the changing relationship between the dead and the living to highlight the significance of the dead in sociocultural evolution. The essential feature of the burial practices observed at Jomon sites is the centrality of the dead and their continuous presence in the kinship system. The mortuary practices discussed in this paper represent a close relationship between the dead and the living in the non-hierarchical complex society, in which the dead were not detached from the society, but kept at its core, as a materialized reference of kin networks. This article is part of the theme issue 'Evolutionary thanatology: impacts of the dead on the living in humans and other animals'.

    The invention of lacquer technology is significant in history as the first evidence of the use of an organic substance in creating durable coloured objects. By focusing on the evidence from the Jomon Period, Japan, this article clarifies the nature of complex technology and knowledge required for lacquer production, presents how lacquer technology enhanced our creative ability, and discusses its significance in human history. Lacquer technology was invented in the course of increasing human-plant interaction in the warming climate of the early Holocene. Personal ornaments coated with red lacquer are the most conspicuous throughout the Jomon Period from the beginning of lacquer technology. Strong attention to colour and intensive application on personal ornaments indicate that the creation of symbolic artefacts in social context was at the core of Jomon lacquer technology.

    Jomon is the name of the prehistoric period and culture on the Japanese Archipelago that follows the Paleolithic Period and precedes the agricultural Yayoi Period. Most scholars agree that the date of the oldest pottery in Japan (ca. 16,000 cal. BP) marks the beginning of the Jomon Period. The end of the Jomon Period is still controversial. In Kyushu, the transition from the Jomon to the Yayoi Period may have occurred as early as 2900-2800 cal. BP, but in northern Honshu, the end of the Jomon Period is likely to have been as late as 2400-2300 cal. BP. Because the Jomon Period lasted for more than 10,000 years, and because the geographic characteristics within the Japanese Archipelago vary significantly, Jomon culture shows marked temporal and spatial variability. This chapter reviews recent developments in Jomon archaeology with an emphasis on two different Jomon cultural trajectories in eastern and western Japan from the Initial to Final Jomon Periods. We conclude that Jomon archaeology is moving forward from a phase of data accumulation based on the results of a large number of rescue excavations to one of data organization and interpretation. New lines of archaeological evidence, including results of chemical and scientific analyses, can help archaeologists tackle key questions that still remain unanswered.

    Whether man is predisposed to lethal violence, ranging from homicide to warfare, and how that may have impacted human evolution, are among the most controversial topics of debate on human evolution. Although recent studies on the evolution of warfare have been based on various archaeological and ethnographic data, they have reported mixed results: it is unclearwhether or not warfare among prehistoric hunter-gatherers was common enough to be a component of human nature and a selective pressure for the evolution of human behaviour. This paper reports the mortality attributable to violence, and the spatio-temporal pattern of violence thus shown among ancient hunter-gatherers using skeletal evidence in prehistoric Japan (the Jomon period: 13 000 cal BC-800 cal BC). Our results suggest that the mortality due to violence was low and spatio-temporally highly restricted in the Jomon period, which implies that violence including warfare in prehistoric Japan was not common.

    本計画研究では、これまで概念的に切り分けられてきた「心」と「物質」がどのような相互作用によって文化を生み出すのかを追求するため、身体的機能を拡張する技術的側面と、感性に訴えて心を操作する芸術的側面とを、「アート」として統合的に分析し、物質文化が人間にどのような力を及ぼすかを検討している。今年度は以下を実施した。
    （1）連携研究の推進。今年度は班会議を3回実施し、意思の密な疎通を図った。研究打ち合わせとともに、他班のメンバーを交えた議論や、アイトラッカーの操作テスト等も行った。第3回は、2020年2月に岡山大学で開催し、進捗状況の確認や研究打合せ等を行った。班を超えた共同研究として、B02班メンバーや海外研究協力者とヒト形人工物研究ユニットを立ち上げ、心理・行動・脳活動調査実験の検討を開始した。視線計測を用いた土器や土偶の顔の印象評価についての実験計画を進め，基礎的な実験を行った。また、素地土の科学的検討等のために、ハンドヘルド蛍光X線分析装置の調整と計測試験を行った。
    （2）研究方法の開発と実践。身体感覚や知覚という視点から、三次元計測データを中心に造形的特徴の定量的把握及び比較分析を行う必要があり、他班とも連携しつつ3Dデータの獲得・分析方法の検討を行った。C01班を主体として実施されたハンズオン・セミナーへの参加・協力等も通して本研究の基礎となる3D計測・解析のための環境を整え、12月にはA01班、C01班のメンバーと合同でBIZEN中南米美術館の資料調査・3Ｄデータ化を実施した。特任助教を雇用し、SfMによる三次元モデルの技術的検討を行い、データを蓄積していく体制を整えた。
    （3）出ユーラシア比較研究。各メンバーが日本列島、中南米、オセアニアの土器、土偶、漆、イレズミ等について海外調査を含む研究を進め、第２回全体会議で成果を発表し、共通する要素について考察を深めた。

    人間が物理的に生み出す物質、人間の身体、そしてそれらの相互作用の中核にあって文化を生み出す心という3つの視座の下に、文明形成期の物質文化に焦点を当て、人間に特異的な「ニッチ（生態的地位）」がいかに形成されてきたかを明らかにする統合的人類史学を構築するのが本研究の目的である。そのため、2019年度は次のような活動を行った。
    (1)領域研究推進体制の構築。事務職員を雇用し、岡山大学に本部を、南山大学に事務局を置く体制を整えた。日本語及び英語でウェブサイトを作成するとともに、 SNS のアカウントも作成し、迅速な情報公開を可能にした。オンライン会議も併用して定期的に総括班会議を開催した。
    (2)全体会議の開催。2019年９月に岡山大学で第１回全体会議を開催し、領域全体の目的、各研究班の活動計画を共有した。会議の動画をYouTubeでも公開し、公募研究者にも十分な情報が伝わるよう配慮した。2020年1月には南山大学で第２回全体会議を一般公開で開催し、領域メンバーの研究成果発表、意見交換の場とした。
    (3)研究成果の総括・発信。ニュースレター『出ゆーらしあ』と2019年度の研究活動報告書を刊行した。領域刊行物は、印刷物を関連研究者および諸機関に配布するとともに、ウェブサイトからもダウンロードできるようにした。
    (4)連携研究・国際研究の推進。班を超えた連携研究を推進するため、複数のユニット研究を立ち上げた。また、各班の研究成果を共有するシステムとしてのデータベースの枠組みについて検討し、手持ちのデータを使って試験的インターフェイスを作成した。地域を超えた比較研究のため、統一した基準でエヴィデンスを整理するフォーマットを作成した。2020年2月に、本領域研究の主要なフィールドのひとつであるメキシコで国際会議を開催した。また、海外調査や国際シンポジウム等の支援、後援を行った。

    計画に従って鳥取県西伯郡大山町岩伏し遺跡で2019年9月に発掘調査を実施した。発掘調査の成果として、縄文時代後期の焼土遺構は約4.0m×3.5mの不整方形を呈することが判明した。内部に堆積する焼土層は炭化した木片を含み、ブロック状ないし層状の明赤褐色土を伴う。床面はまだ精査できておらず、遺構の性格については来年度の調査で検討する必要がある。また、焼土遺構を切る土坑状の遺構が複数検出され、遺跡の継続的な利用が推定された。
    昨年度の調査時に採取した炭化物の放射性炭素年代測定を実施し、焼土の形成が2288-2189CalBC、焼土遺構を切る遺構が2192-2180CalBCと、いずれも縄文時代後期前葉の年代が得られた。また、これらの遺構の上に乗るクロボク上層から採取された試料は13～14世紀の年代を示しており、黒ボクの形成が中世まで進行していたことを示唆する。江戸時代に形成された遺構があることも判明し、この地点での人間活動を長期的に把握することができた。
    昨年度の調査時に採取した土壌サンプルの植物珪酸体分析、花粉分析を実施し、ローム層から黒ボク下層にかけての植生変化は、完新世における気候温暖化の影響に加えて、火入れなど人間による植生干渉の影響が反映されている可能性が高まった。
    発掘調査と並行して、昨年度に引き続き、打ち込みサンプラーによるボーリング調査を実施した。１０ｍメッシュを組んで、昨年度より北側に範囲を拡大して合計20本のボーリングサンプルを採取した。層相観察の結果、下位から砂礫層、ローム、漸移層、黒ボクという一連の層相変化が共通して認められた。黒ボク層の分布状況から、調査地点が近代以降の開発の影響を受けず、旧地形を良好にとどめていることが確認できた。

    主として二つの成果があった。一つは、最新の考古学的知見を収集・整理して新人がアフリカを出てユーラシアに拡散した年代や経緯、そしてネアンデルタール人と置き換わっていった過程をできるかぎり詳細に跡づけたことである。もう一つの成果は、脳機能の違いに基づく学習能力差が両者の交替劇につながったのではないかという「学習仮説」を考古学的観点から検証したことである。従来、強調されてきた生得的な能力差だけでなく、歴史的に形成された社会環境の違いが、学習行動ひいては適応能力に大きく作用していた可能性を指摘した。

    遺跡のデータベース化を行い、それに基づく分析から、西日本の縄文～弥生時代の居住様式変化の実態、岡山県の弥生～古墳時代における人口推移のプロセスと社会の複雑化との関係、関東・中部地方の弥生時代についての人口推定方法の問題点等を明らかにした。生活様式に関する情報の少ない中国地方については、発掘調査によって新たな資料を得た。
    縄文土器片の形状を定量的記述方法を用いて分析し、年代差を表す変異とそうでない変異があること、後期前葉と中葉の間で土器の構造に大きな差異があることを示した。
    人口動態と文化変化に関するシミュレーション・プログラムを開発し、両者の関係を検討した。シミュレーションはWebで公開した。

    1)昨年度に引き続き、既刊の報告書に基づいて、西日本の縄文時代後期から弥生時代前期にかけての遺跡のデータベースを作成した。遺跡の国土座標、時期(土器編年に基づいて細分)、立地、遺構の有無と種類をエクセルに入力した。入力作業については、岡山大学の学生を雇用し、謝金を支払った。本年度は、奈良県、兵庫県、香川県、福岡県のデータベースを作成した。西日本全体のデータベース化という当初の目標は達せなかったが、昨年度完成した中国地方を中心に、九州から近畿に渡る範囲で一定の動向把握が可能なデータベースが得られた。
    2)縄文時代の古環境や生業に関するデータを得るため、鳥取県伯耆町の井後草里遺跡で小規模な発掘調査を行った。作業の一部は岡山大学の学生を雇用して実施し、謝金を支払った。縄文時代早期と後期の遺物を確認し、植物珪酸体などの自然科鵠的分析を実施して、縄文時代早期から現代にかけての古環境変化についてのデータを得た。これにより、同じ地点でも、縄文時代早期と後期で具体的にどの程度自然環境が異なっていたかを知ることができた。発掘調査の成果については今年度報告書を刊行した。
    3)入力が済んだ遺跡のデータについては、地理情報システムのソフトウェア(IDRISI)を用いて解析し、地域・時期ごとの立地の特徴や傾向について分析を行っている。その結果、遺跡立地の時期ごとの変遷が、地域によってかなり異なっていることが分かってきた。生業の変化と人口変動の関係を考える上で、各地域の地形や環境がどのように関与しているかという問題についての手がかりが得られたので、今後のモデル化に生かすことができる。

  • 先史・古代社会の遠隔地交渉に関する人類学的総合研究

    蛍光X線分析による胎土分析では,対象を弥生土器を中心とする軟質系土器にも拡張した。その結果,軟質系土器に対する分析法を確立することができ,遠隔地交渉を考察するための多くのデータを得た。実証レベルでの大きな進展として,土器の移動について形態的類似性のみに頼った解釈の不正確さを,胎土分析から指摘し,考古科学的分析を総合した検討の必要性を内外に明示することになった。
    弥生時代において,北部九州と沖縄諸島との間での遠隔地交渉の重要な鍵を握る2つの重要遺跡(五島列島の宇久松原遺跡と薩摩半島西部の高橋遺跡)の発掘調査を実施し,両遺跡で墓地を確認した。両遺跡は遠隔地交渉の仲介者としての役割を果たした地域であることを高度に実証できた。
    我々は「遠隔地交渉」を少なくとも5万年前以来の人類普遍の現象とみなし,遠隔地交渉を,(1)通常は食物以外の,(2)物質文化に象徴的意味が付与され,(3)生命維持戦略としてのヒトの生物的基盤に基づき,(4)交渉の範囲が「日常的接触範囲」を超えるものとして包括的に定義した。さらに,遠隔地交渉のパターン分けを行い,その意味を考察した。そして,故郷表示型→(ディアスポラ型)→異界交渉型→国家的外交型の4類型への分類に成功した。なお、それらは進化論的に順次出現したとみなすことができる。
    これらの説明については,ヒトの認知的基盤の進化と性格を十分考慮にいれることで説得力を持たせることができた。遠隔地からの物資や情報に高価値を見出す傾向は,後期ホモ・サピエンスに特有の認知傾向であると考えられ,遠隔地交渉は,優れて現代人的行為と位置づけた。そして,社会の複雑化につれ,遠隔地交渉の新しいパターンが加わっていくと考えるに至ったのである。
    遠隔地交渉に視点をすえることによって,従来の発展段階論的な「時代区分」とは異なる基準による歴史叙述が可能になることを,より明確に示すことができた。

    1 ヨーロッパ新石器時代の様相と縄文文化の様相についての総合的比較検討のため、次のような研究を実施し、それぞれについて暫定的な結果が得られた。
    ・縄文文化の環状列石とブリテン島のモニュメントについて比較検討を行った。その結果として、定住度とモニュメント築造との関係について共通する側面があることを推定した。
    ・ヨーロッパ新石器時代の遺跡についてのデータベースを作成し、年代や地域的な動向についての情報を整理した。その結果、現在までに得られている放射性炭素年代に基づく新石器文化の動態を把握することができた。また、定住度や農耕・牧畜への依存度、新石器化のプロセスにおける地域的・時期的多様性を確認した。
    ・総合的検討の結果、ヨーロッパ新石器文化と縄文文化の間には、農耕社会化というプロセスにおいて共通する点が認められた。とくに、南東ヨーロッパの初期新石器文化と前期・中期の関東・東北地方の縄文文化とは、定住度の高さと物質文化のあり方に共通性が高い。しかし、農耕への依存度や牧畜の存在などの要因による差異もあり、文化総体を単位とする比較ではなく、諸要素間の関係性のあり方に焦点をあてた比較研究が、文化変化の研究を促進するうえで必要であることを確認した。
    2 熊本県人吉市の瓜生田遺跡の発掘調査成果についての整理・検討を行い、次のような成果を得た。
    ・九州における縄文時代後期後半から弥生時代前期にかけての遺跡動態を検討した結果、人吉地域は、後期末から晩期前半にかけて集落遺跡が増加した熊本県北部と、晩期後半(黒川式期)に遺跡数が増加するが住居跡がほとんどみられない南九州地域との中間に位置している。瓜生田遺跡と周辺の当該期遺跡の動向から、人吉地域の集団は、生活様式においても両地域の中間的な様相を示すといえる。
    ・九州においても、縄文時代後期から晩期にかけて、定住度は地域によってかなり変動していることが推測された。今後、定住度の変化と生業の関係についてさらに研究を進める必要がある。
    ・瓜生田遺跡の発掘調査概報を作成した。

    1 日本の古代戸籍にもとづく人口変動シミュレーションのための数値的な裏付けがほぼ確定し、標準モデルを提示することができた。これは、古代の人口研究の定点となるものと思われる。
    2 古代社会は、著しい多産多死型社会であることがいっそう明らかになった。
    3 古代戸籍の検討から、高年齢の夫婦ほど年齢差が大きいという事実が明らかになり、これは再婚が頻繁に行われていたことによると推定された。死別と再婚の繰り返しが、古代社会の婚姻を不安定なものに見せていると考えられ、これは古代の婚姻に関する通説的な理解と異なるものである。
    4 類人猿の「人口」ピラミッドと古代戸籍の人口ピラミッドとは、共通の富士山型を示しており、その差はそれほど著しく大きいものではないことが明らかになった。従って、旧石器時代から古墳時代の間の人口ピラミッドも、おのずから一定の範囲におさまるものとなり、そうした社会について一定の蓋然性をもって生死のパターンや平均寿命を論じることが可能となった。
    5 他の集団や村落との間に婚姻関係を結ぶ外婚制などのシステムについて、それが個々の集団や村落における人口変動の調節機能を果たしていることを、シミュレーションから推定した。
    6 縄文時代後期後半から弥生時代前期にかけての九州の遺跡データベースを作成した。これによって、弥生化に関する人口変動シミュレーションの実施が可能となり、渡来人の役割や遺伝情報の拡散について検討できるようになった。
