Water is the first major volatile component in the Earth's interior. My current study is aimed at quantifying the solubility and solution mechanism for water in magmatic melt that are not quenchable from high temperatures and high pressures. To this end, I am conducting micro-FTIR and micro-Raman spectroscopic measurements of water-bearing magma analogues in situ at high temperatures and at high pressures. This approach is now being extended to cover the systems containing other volatiles such as nitrogen . These studies provide a rigorous petrological base for better understanding the dynamics of magma migration in the Earth's interior and accompanied material transport to the Earth's atmosphere and oceans.Volatines and magmas1999.04
