This study investigated the growth response of a specific alien species, Hydrocotyle ranunculoides L. f., to differences in water current and scraping on and below the soil surface. Furthermore, growth characteristics of creeping stem cut fragments were surveyed. Non-scraped creeping stems extended about 10 m in two months. The creeping stems were cut naturally in a flowing water-current (0.23 ± 0.01 m/s) , although the biomass was significantly greater under a stagnant water situation. Plants scraped to soil depth of 1 cm showed greater total biomass than that of plants scraped only on the soil surface. Creeping stem cut fragments having 2 nodes and 3 nodes with non-terminal buds regenerated well. Biomass of the creeping stem cut fragments of 2 nodes increased to more than 80% of that of 4-node fragments. Moreover, the total number of nodes increased almost equally to the total for a 4 node fragment. Results show that the creeping stems reproduced better in the case of scraping treatment, with cutting or damage, than in a non-scraping treatment.

This study was investigated cold tolerance and seed propagation characteristics to support proper control and management of invasive aquatic plants: Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, H. umbellata, and H. verticillata of Hydrocotyle spp. In winter, H. verticillata grew well under soil moisture conditions from wet to dry. The growth of H. umbellata has had adaptability widely with soil moisture condition from 30 cm submerged to a dry. The growth of H. ranunculoides was inhibited significantly under the dry up condition about 12% of volumetric water content in the soil under low temperatures. H. verticillata and H. umbellata produced no seeds. H. ranunculoides produced some seeds, of which approximately 60% were brown. Their seeds of H. ranunculoides have light dormancy, and their germination rate under the constant temperature condition of 15°C was higher than that under alternating temperature of 30°C/23°C or constant temperature of 30°C.

Phosphorus (P) is a finite, non-renewable, and natural resource and a vital major nutrient for plant metabolic and developmental processes. However, adverse soil biogeochemical characteristics of alkaline-calcareous soils (especially Aridisols) and highly weathered acid soils (i.e., Ultisols and Oxisols) render orthophosphate (Pi) as the least available major nutrient due to P complexation, sorption, and/or fixation. In such soil environments, plant bioavailable P is only a small fraction of total soil P, seriously limiting crop growth and production. Different plant species, and even cultivars of the same species, may display a suite of growth responses that enable them to solubilize and scavenge soil P either by enhancing external Pi acquisition or reprioritizing internal Pi use under P-stress soil environments. This paper reports relative growth responses, P acquisition and P-use efficiency characteristics by 14 cultivars of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in solution culture with high/low P supply induced by applying soluble NH4H2PO4, sparingly soluble rock phosphate, and Ca-3(PO4)(2). The wheat cultivars exhibited considerable genetic diversity in biomass accumulation, P concentrations, P contents, factor (PSF) and P efficiency characteristics [i.e., P utilization efficiency (PUE), P efficiency (PE), and PE ratio (PER)]. Plant growth and PE parameters were significantly correlated, while P uptake was linearly related with biomass increase and solution pH decrease. The wheat cultivars with high PUE, PER and P uptake, and low PSF, and plant P concentration were more efficient in utilizing P and, hence, more tolerant under P-stress environment. Biomass and P contents of P efficient/low-P tolerant wheat cultivars were superior to P inefficient/low-P sensitive cultivars at all P-stress levels. Hence, P efficient/low-P tolerant cultivars are the most desirable wheat genotypes for P-stress environments because they are able to scavenge more P from sparingly soluble P sources or soil-bound P forms.

To evaluate phosphorus (P)-stress-induced relative growth responses, P-efficiency characteristics, P remobilization, and redesign in root architectural systems, Brassica cultivars were grown with sparingly soluble rock phosphate and calcium phosphate [Ca-3(PO4)(2)] or with low/high P supply in solution and sand culture experiments. Tested cultivars showed considerable genetic diversity in biomass accumulation, concentration and contents of P, P-stress factor (PSF), and P-efficiency characteristics [P-utilization efficiency (PUE), P efficiency (PE), and P-efficiency ratio (PER)]. Statistically significant correlations were observed between P efficiency and growth parameters. Elongation rates of primary roots decreased but the length of lateral roots and branched zone elongation rates increased under P starvation. Cultivars remobilized P from metabolically inactive to active sites in P-stressed plants that may have helped low-P-tolerant cultivars to establish a better rooting system, which provided basis for enhanced P-use efficiency and tolerance against P stress. Cultivars depicting high P efficiency and low PSF values were more tolerant and are a better choice to grow under P-stress environments.

Phosphate (Pi), the fully oxidized and assimilated form of phosphorus (P), influences virtually all developmental and biochemical processes in plants
however, its availability and distribution are widely heterogeneous. Paradoxically, although total P is abundant in lithosphere, elusive soil chemistry of Pi renders the element the most dilute and the least mobile in natural and agricultural ecosystems, resulting in P deprivation due to its low mobility and high fixation capacity in the soil. Nonmycorrhizal Brassica does not produce specialized cluster/dauciform roots but is an effective P user compared to other crops. Using a soil low in P (Mehlich 3-extractable P) with or without P fertilization, Brassica cultivars showed substantial genetic diversity in P-utilization efficiency (PUE), P efficiency (PE), P-efficiency ratio (PER), and P-stress factor (PSF). Cultivars producing greater root biomass accumulated greater total P contents, which in turn was related negatively to PSF and positively to shoot and total biomass. Plant survival and reproduction rely on efficient strategies in exploring culture media for P. Acquisition of orthophosphate from extracellular sparse P sources may be enhanced by biochemical rescue strategies such as copious H+ efflux and/or carboxylates exudation into rhizosphere by roots via plasmalemma H+-ATPase and anion channels triggered by P starvation. The P-starvation-induced solution pH changes due to H+ efflux, and carboxylates exudations were estimated by low-P-tolerant and low-P-sensitive cultivars in solution culture experiments. Low-P-tolerant cultivars showed more decrease in pH compared to low-P-sensitive cultivars when cultivars were grown under a P-stress environment induced by using sparingly soluble P sources (rock phosphate and tricalcium phosphate). The P contents of cultivars were inversely related to decrease in culture media pH. Low P-tolerant cultivars presented enhanced H+-efflux and total carboxylates exudations compared to low-P-sensitive cultivars, resulting in more rhizosphere acidification to scavenge Pi, evidencing their adaptability to P starvation. These elegant P-stress-induced rescue strategies by tested cultivars provided the basis of enhanced P solubilization and acquisition of P from sparingly soluble P sources to combat P-starved environments. © 2013 Copyright Taylor &amp

The purpose of these experiments was to determine the relationship between that the seed coat colors, the position effects, the seed shapes, the dehiscence grades of the capsules and the seed coat crack of Iris pseudacorus and the germination characteristics of seeds that come into emergence in autumn. In the seeds which were floating the water surface, compared with the brown seed and black seed, the white seed had a little deep dormancy. The differences of dormancy depending on a position effect, a seed shape, and differences resulting from a dehiscent time were little, so it was considered that the relevance with autumn emergence is low. Dormancy of the seed remaining in dehiscence capsules became deeper under air-dried storage of the room temperature conditions, and the breaking of dormancy was enhanced by 5℃ wet-storage. However, at a field test, there was no correlation between the rate of the emergence and the dehiscence grades of the capsules. The emergences mainly occurred in the next spring after seed ripening, but some of seeds germinated at the rate of 2-16% in the autumn of the ripened year. The seed in which seed coat cracked germinated earlier, and it was shown that their cumulative germination percentage was high even under 30℃ constant conditions. Therefore, it was thought that the seed in which seed coat cracked had contributed to the autumn emergence greatly.

Eutrophication is caused by an over enrichment of aquatic ecosystems with nutrients, principally with chronic release of phosphorus (P) from point and non-point sources, leading to nuisance algal blooms, anoxic events, impaired water quality and stubborn environmental issues. Aquatic macrophytes display an efficient phytosequestration of inorganics in plant parts due to their non-degradable nature. Serial microcosm experiments were conducted to estimate differential phytoremdiation ability of A. japonica, A. pinnata, and A. hybrid to remove P from different P-eutrophicated solutions under different incubation periods. Azolla plants showed substantial P-removal efficiency from P-eutrophicated solutions, and removed P-amounts were significantly correlated with P-accumulated in plant biomass. About 1-fold decrease in solution pH might be ascribed to fit efflux. Plants without P-hunger showed lower P-removal rates compared to P-hunger plants. A. japonica displayed highest P removal efficiency in different experiments. From these kinetic experiments, it is plausible to conclude that phytoaccumulation was the possible mechanism for P-removal, and due to fast growth, high tolerance and accumulation ability, free floating Azolla might be the best candidate among macrophytes to combat P-driven eutrophication. Results obtained will not only provide information to environmental managers to mitigate P-eutrophication but will also provide data base to scientists for their future ventures. This study attempts creation of a biotope and reduction in water pollution by developing aquatic weed community in an artificial tidal flat using dredged sludge in Lake Kojima located in southern Okayama Prefecture, where nutrient enrichment has advanced. Changes in physical and chemical factors affecting the tidal flat are grasped to predict the material balance between living things in the tidal flat, water systems, and bottom sludge. We propose continued operation and maintenance of the biotope. Results obtained are described below.
1. Basic study related to creation and development of ecosystem in tidal flat developed land : Results of surveys of community development of planting species in a natural state revealed that Zizania latifolia, Schoenoplectus validus, and Typha angustifolia developed the community and formed a vegetation revetment. Furthermore, the larger the plant community, the more shellfish reside there. Submerged plants were planted in porous ceramics to develop a planting method.
2. Grasping of formation processes of physical and chemical factors of tidal flat developed land : Measurements of EC and pH of the soil at the fresh water side from the waterfront line were higher than those at the continental area, both at the surface layer and 5cm below ground. Although sediment and local scour are generated according to the presence or absence of typhoons, development of the underground parts of plant communities made a great contribution.
3. Survey of the pollution load from farmland flowing into Lake Kojima : Although the farmland has nitrogen reduction action, loading of phosphorus to the outside tends to increase concomitantly with increased amounts of applied fertilizer and precipitation.
4. Survey of distribution of aquatic weeds and water pollution in Lake Kojima : Although mass generation of Trapa japonica occurred annually, no indication of regrowth of submerged plants was recognized. Regarding water quality, no tendency of phosphorus reduction was noticed.
5. Model analysis of tidal flat developed land by data processing : Flows generated around an artificial tidal flat in Lake Kojima were analyzed quantitatively.
As described above, establishment of an ecosystem according to its food chain, accumulation of organic substances, and purification of water quality were confirmed by planting of large aquatic weeds in the artificial tidal flat. However, based on these results, proposal of a method of operation and maintenance of the biotope is premature.

From a viewpoint of the difference of the life form of a cover plant, we evaluated the effect which the life form of a cover plant on slope exerts on soil erosion prevention. It measured the surface runoff and the soil loss for every rain on slope composed of Masa soil with 10 inclinations, which the introductory board and water tank were installed in the lower end of the examination frame of 2m (W) x 5m (L). We set up five plots. Four of these plots were a cover plant plots vegetated with Cynondon dactylon Pers., Dichondra repens Forest and Artemisia princes Pampan, from which it is thought that the adaptation power to severe environment is high, and a life form differs. The other one was a bare surface plot as a control plot. The obtained results were as follows.
(1)The dangerous rainy season is in May-November. Even when it is little year precipitation, if the frequency of rain such as more than 3mm/lOmin is high, the amount of soil loss increased.
(2)Although the amount of soil loss of a bare surface plot was the full limits of the maximum permissible dose of our country, in a Artemisia princes plot and Cynondon dactylon plot, it is the amount of soil loss below the maximum permissible dose. Therefore the effect of a cover plant on the soil erosion prevention on slope was able to check and quantify it. Among the species, Artemisia princes, straight life form, was excellent. This tendency was also the same of the following phenomena.
(3)It was shown clearly that increase of the amount of penetration of rain into soil and reduction of surface runoff occurred because of increase of the soil vacancy by the root system and also increase of the soil coarse vacancy by formation of soil aggregate due to humus.
(4)CEC of soil increased with increase of humus, and there are the further development of soil structure and an effect of improving soil environment to the suitable habitat for growth of a cover plant.
(5)The pH neutralization effect of the acid rain by a cover plant was accepted, and not only the soil erosion prevention effect but the effect which mitigates the influence of the ecosystem on air environment deterioration has been checked.
