    Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether improvement in physical activity of students following a 4-month intervention of a university course was maintained 8 months later.
    Methods: Data on 77 students who responded to our scheduled inquiries completely through 1 year were analyzed. Participants of the intervention group (n=49) using the internet-based physical activity program exhibited significant increases in energy expenditures measured by IPAQ compared with the no-treatment control group (n=28) through 1 year.
    Results: Participants who did not engage in regular university sports activities (baseline: 450 +/- 351 kcal day(-1); post: 587 +/- 320 kcal day(-1); 8-month follow-up: 580 +/- 394 kcal day(-1)) only exhibited significant increases in energy expenditures compared with those of the control group (baseline: 498 341 kcal day-1; post: 414 242 kcal day-1; 8-month follow-up: 347 275 kcal day-1).
    Conclusion: These results suggested that an internet-based interactive intervention could become a helpful tool in promoting and maintaining physical activity in the long term. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the i-PAP, an internet-based Physical Activity Program, in promoting physical activity, as well as to assess the effectiveness of i-PAP functions and e-mail tip sheets in promoting positive attitudes toward regular physical activity. This study was designed to test the efficacy of the i-PAP over a 14-week, in-semester period among 81 college students who had been allocated to an intervention group (n=52) or a no-intervention group (n=29). In repeated measures ANOVA, the intervention group exhibited a significant increase in energy expenditure, compared to the no-intervention group. In factor and path analyses, goal-setting and scheduling the latter of which involved the individual setting dates and times for regular physical activity were critical functions in promoting physical activity. The i-PAP showed strong effectiveness in promoting physical activity, as expected. In particular, goal-setting and scheduling seemed to have positive effects on attitudes toward physical activity.

    It is reported that physical fitness in Japanese children has been decreasing. It is generally admitted that the amount of daily physical activity has a high influence on physical fitness.<br>To evaluate the effect of physical education class on the amount of daily physical activity of elementary children, the amount of physical activity in a day and in physical education class were measured using a pedometer. Ninety-five healthy children aged 10 and 12 were the subjects.<br>The results were as follows:<br>1) According to the pedometer, children took 1, 936&plusmn;653 (mean&plusmn;s.d.) steps during the physical education class.<br>2) Total pedometer recordings of 13, 867&plusmn;5, 009 steps were obtained on a day with a physical education class and 12, 079&plusmn;4, 148 steps on a day without physical education class. The amount of daily physical activity with physical education class was significantly greater than that without physical education class.<br>3) Steps taken during daily physical activity increased linearly as steps in physical education class increased.<br>4) Sedentary children whose pedometer steps per day were less than 10, 000 steps accounted for 23.7%. In sedentary children, 21.9% of daily physical activity was performed in physical education class.<br>These results indicate that physical education class comprises a large part of the daily physical activity of sedentary children.

    A study was designed to examine the effects of exercise intensity on renal clearance parameters.Five healthy male subjects underwent exercise tests on an bicycle ergometer at 4 different work loads for 15 min.The indicators of exercise intensity employed were the percentage of maximal oxygen uptake (%VO_2max), heart rate (HR) and blood lactate level (La). As parameters of renal clearance, para-aminohippurate clearance (C_<PAH>), thiosulfate clearance (C_<thio>) and creatinine clearance (C_<cr>) were measured by the continuous infusion technique during the exercise. 1) The renal clearance parameters during exercise decreased linearly as the exercise intensity increased. The percentage of maximal oxygen uptake at the onset of the decreases in %C_<PAH>, %C_<thio> and %C_<cr> were 36, 45 and 47%VO_2max, respectively. 2) Among the indicators of exercise intensity,the decrease in La showed the closest correlation with renal clearance during the exercise. 3) The renal plasma flow, which was measured as C_<PAH>, began to decrease linearly at a significantly lower exercise intensity than the glomeru1ar filtration rate, which was measured as both C_<ctio> and C_<cr>. The above results suggest that renal clearance parameters begin to decrease at the threshold as exercise intensity increases.

    There is limited evidence in Japan regarding the psychosocial determinants of fruit/vegetable intake. We performed a cross-sectional study of people aged 18 years or older in four regions of Japan; 2308 (men: 1012, women: 1296) individuals who completed the questionnaires were included. We found that 24.8% of people were aware of the current recommendations for vegetables and 13.2% for fruit and that "ability to design meals" and "availability when eating outside of the home" were the most important factors related to self-efficacy and barriers to fruit and vegetable intake, respectively. People with high self-efficacy (OR: 3.16; 95% CI: 2.17, 4.60 for fruit; OR: 4.52; 95% CI: 3.08, 6.64 for vegetables) were more likely to consume more fruit and vegetables. People with high scores on attitude (OR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.06, 2.24) and social support (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.27) were more likely to consume more fruit. People with high perceived barriers (OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.48, 0.98) were less likely to consume fruit. This study suggests a need to increase the general population's awareness of the fruit and vegetable intake recommendations; facilitating positive attitudes, self-efficacy, and social support for individuals and strengthening the ability of individuals to design meals with more vegetables and fruit might be useful intervention programs.

    The present study aimed to investigate the status of physical activity and the differences in psychological factors associated with physical activity from the perspective of transtheoretical model stages between prime- and middle-aged Japanese. The study involved 375 prime-aged volunteers (175 men, 200 women) and 557 middle-aged volunteers (247 men, 310 women) living in Kuse, a town in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. We found that the prime-aged men at the preparation stage had significantly higher self-efficacy scores than at the contemplation stage (p &lt; 0.01). Middle-aged men had significantly higher self-efficacy scores at the contemplation stage than at the precontemplation stage (p &lt; 0.001). Middle-aged women, meanwhile, had significantly higher self-efficacy scores at the maintenance stage than at the action stage (p &lt; 0.01), and at the contemplation stage than at the precontemplation stage (p &lt; 0.001). The present findings provide valuable information about the differences in psychological factors affecting physical activity between prime-aged and middle-aged community-dwelling Japanese. This information may be useful to health professionals as they develop effective community-based intervention programs for target populations.

    Recently, resistance training-based exercise programs for the elderly have been widely performed as preventive approaches for long-term care in Japan. Here, we evaluated two health pro- grams in order to find factors that would contribute to the enhancement of exercise habituation in exercise intervention for disability prevention in community-dwelling Japanese elderly. Fifty-two elderly people were instructed to stretch every part of the body and to perform low-intensity resistance training for the lower extremities as basic exercises in two classes. The participants in Class A were instructed once a week for the first four weeks and those in Class B every two weeks for 3 months. At the baseline, and 3 months later, physical performance and body mass index(BMI) were evaluated using a questionnaire survey including information on age, sex, subjective health status, habitual exercise and Self Motivation Test. We examined the factors contributing to exercise habituation by multivariate logistic analysis. There were no significant differences in the results of the questionnaire survey except for mean age between the participants in Class A and Class B. By means of these interventions, the results of Timed Up and Go and the ratio of individuals who regularly exercised were improved, whereas BMI, grip strength and standing on one leg were not. Only 29.4% of participants followed basic exercises twice a week in Class A, whereas 83.3% of participants adhered to basic exercises in Class B. Exercise habituation was higher among participants who felt subjectively healthy and habitually exercised, and most of them belonged to Class B, in comparison with subjects who did not exercise habitually. Multivariate analysis indicated that the choice of class and subjective health status of the participants were the most important factors for exercise habituation. Our findings suggest that participant-tailored program planning is important for exercise habituation as an approach to exercise intervention for community-dwelling elderly.

    To promote habitual participation in physical activity, a 3-month program for lifestyle physical activity intervention (L group) and structured exercise intervention (E group) was carried out in a community in Okayama Prefecture. One year later, we compared the two intervention groups in terms of cost-effectiveness and behavioral change in habitual physical activity. A total of 250 subjects voluntarily participated in the lifestyle physical activity intervention; and a total of 42 subjects participated in the structured exercise intervention. The number of participants decreased to 115 (46%) and 21 (50%), respectively, one year later. However, the proportion of subjects who practice endurance exercise increased significantly in both L and E groups; and an additional 35 subjects (30%) started to practice endurance exercise in L group and 5 (24%) in E group after the interventions. The cost-effectiveness for a person newly starting the endurance exercise practice in the L group intervention was 29,206yen; and the E group intervention was 124,731yen, a ratio of 1/4.3. The study suggests that the cost-effectiveness for the lifestyle physical activity intervention was 4 times better than the structured exercise intervention.

    The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of long-distance training on the bones in different growth stages by evaluating the bones of female high school athletes and female adult athletes who engage in long-distance training. Thirteen female high school athletes (aged 15-17 years) and 7 female adult athletes (aged 21-25 years) were enrolled in the present study. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Cortical bone status was also evaluated by measuring the tibial speed of sound (t-SOS). The bone metabolic status was evaluated by osteocalcin (OC) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). OC (P&lt;0.01) and lumbar BMD (P&lt;0.05) were significantly higher in high school athletes who were in the modeling period than in the adult athletes. Leg BMD (P&lt;0.01) and t-SOS (P&lt;0.05) were significantly higher in adult athletes who were in the remodeling period than in high school athletes. When lumbar BMD and leg BMD were compared according to menstrual conditions, the high school athletes with regular menstruation showed a significantly higher level of bone density than those having irregular or absent menstruation. These results indicate that the effect of long-distance training on bone metabolism is influenced strongly by sex hormones during late puberty. We concluded that the effect of long-distance training on bone metabolism in the female high school athletes (i.e., during puberty) was different from that in the adult athletes.

    Objective: To investigate the link between a reduction in blood pressure (BP) and daily exercise. Design: Cross-sectional and longitudinal clinical intervention study with exercise education. Subjects: 43 overweight Japanese men aged 32-59 years (BMI, 29.0+/-2.3 kg/m(2)) at baseline. Among the participants, a randomly selected 23 overweight men (BMI, 28.5+/-1.7) were further enrolled into the 10 months exercise program. Measurements: BP was measured every week and steps per day were also recorded every day throughout the observation period. Fat distribution was evaluated by visceral fat (V) and subcutaneous fat (S) areas measured with computed tomography (CT) scanning at umbilical level, at before, 5 months and after intervention. Anthropometric parameters were also measured at same point. Aerobic exercise level, muscle strength, flexibility and calorie intake and insulin resistance (HOMA index) were investigated at before and after the study. Results: In a cross sectional analysis, systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were significantly correlated with body composition. In a second longitudinal analysis, SBP was significantly reduced at 2 months and DBP was also reduced at 3 months, and almost maintained until the end of the observation period. Increasing daily walking was observed in 3 months and maintained until 10 months. Body composition, aerobic exercise level, muscle strength, flexibility and insulin resistance were significantly improved. There was positive correlation between DeltaDBP and Deltavisceral fat area (1-5, 5-10, 1-10 months). By stepwise multiple regression analysis, only Deltavisceral fat area was independently related to DeltaDBP at a significant level (1-10 months: DeltaDBP=-0.608+0.105Deltavisceral fat area, r(2)=0.227, P=0.0334). Conclusion: The present study indicated daily exercise lowers BP and visceral fat area is the critical factor for BP change. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Psychological Determinants of Physical Activity in Japanese Female Employees: Yuko NISHIDA, et al. Department of Public Health, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry-To understand how psychological characteristics influence adoption and maintenance of physical activity/exercise, we conducted a cross-sectional study among Japanese employees based upon the idea of stages of behavior modification. The study population consisted of 719 employees (male, 396, female, 323) from five medium-sized manufacturing companies (50-200 employees) in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The female response rate was 67.5% (n=218), among which 201 eligible female subjects (62.2%) were analyzed. The study questionnaire included demographic characteristics, physical activity/exercise measures, self-efficacy measures, and perceived benefit and barriers scales. Participants were asked to select the items that best described their current physical activity/exercise level from an 8-item questionnaire, and we converted their answers to the 5 stages of change according to a transtheoretical model of behavior change. Perceived benefit and barrier scales were classified into 7 factors (4 benefits and 3 barriers) by factor analyses. The relationship between psychological determinants and the stage of physical activity/exercise was examined by one-way analysis of variance. Only 10% of the subjects had moderate physical activity (in the action and maintenance stages) regularly. We found that self-efficacy, "weight control benefit", "physical barrier" and "time barrier" were psychological determinants of physical activity/exercise stages in female employees, and especially there was a consistent relationship between self-efficacy and the stage of physical activity/exercise. Our data suggest that health education for Japanese female employees requires that health professionals should provide support for strengthening self-efficacy, show practical ways to increase physical activity in daily life, and provide broad and accurate information showing that physical activity/exercise have a good effect on health.

    Objective: It is known that the accumulation of abdominal fat is one of the risk factors for atherosclerosis. Although exercise is commonly prescribed to reduce body weight, the efficacy of low intensity exercise for the reduction of abdominal visceral adipose tissue remains to be investigated. Research design and methods: Thirty one obese Japanese males (body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25) ranging in age from 32 to 59, participated in a 1-year follow up study and they were instructed to have a modest increase in daily activity and record their daily walking. Before and after exercise prescription, body composition, blood pressure, physical fitness i.e. aerobic exercise level, muscle strength and flexibility were recorded. Insulin resistance was evaluated using a homeostasis model assessment, the HOMA index. Results: HOMA index, parameters of body composition, blood pressure, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol were significantly improved. The aerobic exercise level, leg strength, weight-bearing index (leg strength/body weight) and the steps taken per day were significantly increased. By stepwise multiple regression analysis, Deltavisceral adipose tissue area was the major determinant for DeltaHOMA index. (DeltaHOMA index = -0.386+0.016 Deltavisceral adipose tissue area, r(2) = 0.267, P &lt; 0.01). Exercise capacity and calorie intake were not significantly related to Deltavisceral adipose tissue area, while Deltasteps per day was significantly correlated with Deltavisceral adipose tissue area (Deltavisceral adipose tissue area = -21.363-0.004Delta steps per day, r(2) = 0.184, P = 0.0326). Conclusions: Taken together, intra-abdominal visceral adipose tissue is critically involved in insulin resistance and daily walking rather than improvement of exercise capacity correlated with the reduction of visceral adipose tissue in obese Japanese males.     The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the normal process of cortical bone acquisition during childhood and adolescence, and the relationship between speed of sound (SOS), measured by the Sound Scan 2000 system, and linear growth. A total of 1689 healthy Japanese children and adolescents (862 males and 827 females, aged 7-19 years) were enrolled in the study. SOS (m/s) was measured at the right tibial midshaft and the standard SOS values in the children and adolescents were generated. Various growth parameters were also measured. SOS of tibia increased significantly with age in both males and females (P &lt; 0.001 each). In both sexes, a spurt in SOS was noted 1 year after the standard age at which Japanese peak height velocity (PHV; cm/year) occurs, and SOS increased markedly after the age at which the length of tibia reached a maximum. Multiple regression equations for SOS were generated as a function of various growth parameters; for males, SOS = 3047 + 6.2 X height (cm) + 2.1, X weight (kg) - 9.8 X length of tibia (cm) (R(2) = 0.50; P &lt; 0.001) and for females, SOS = 2713 + 10.3 X height (cm) + 1.8 X weight (kg) - 15.5 X length of tibia (cm) (R(2) = 0.49; P &lt; 0.001). In both sexes, SOS correlated positively with body height and weight, but negatively with length of tibia. Our results indicate that SOS is quite useful for evaluating cortical bone status in children and adolescents; the results of these measurements may provide an explanation for the relative weakness of the mechanical properties of the bone during childhood and adolescence.

    To clarify the trend of hypercholesterolemia in Japanese adolescents, we investigated the serial changes in body mass index (BMI) and serum total cholesterol (TC) concentrations among 5,700 new students enrolled at Okayama University in 1989, 1993, and 1998. After confirming the stability of the TC assay of serum samples stored at -80 degreesC, we measured serum TC levels in stored serum samples using an automated assay system. Although serum TC levels were higher in females than in males, these levels correlated weakly and positively with BMI (r = 0.21, P &lt; 0.001) in males but not in females. Serum TC concentrations progressively increased from 1989-1998 in both sexes, irrespective of changes in BMI. In subjects with normal BMI ( &lt;greater than or equal to&gt;19 and &lt;23 kg/m(2)), a significant increase in serum TC was noted from 1989-1998 in both males (157.2 &lt;plus/minus&gt; 1.0 to 163.6 +/- 0.9 mg/dl) and females (172.0 +/- 1.1 to 175.6 +/- 1.0 mg/dl). Our results indicate on increased incidence of hypercholesterolemia even in nonobese young Japanese adolescents. A concerted effort by health and education officials together with parents is necessary to prevent a further rise in the incidence of hypercholesterolemia among young Japanese.

    Prescription of aerobic exercise for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM) in clinical practice is frequently based on exercise intensity at maximum heart rate (60 &lt; HRmax &lt; 79%), heart rate reserve (50 &lt; HRreserve &lt; 74%), and rating of perceived exertion (12 &lt; RPE &lt; 13). We examined these parameters in Japanese males with Type 2 DM at ventilatory threshold (VT) to investigate the exercise capacity of Type 2 DM patients and re-evaluate the exercise prescription. Fifty-six Japanese Type ? DM males without autonomic neuropathy [age, 53.5 +/- 7.7 years; body mass index (BMI), 23.7 +/- 3.6 kg/m(2)] were enrolled and compared with 56 age- and BMI-matched healthy Japanese males. VT was determined breath by breath during exercise test using a ramp protocol and rates of oxygen consumption ((V) over dotO(2)), work rate (WR), HR, Delta HR, %HRmax '%HRreserve, and RPE were measured at VT. Type 2 DM patients had significantly lower (V) over dot O-2 (3.6 +/- 0.4 metabolic equivalents (METs)) and WR (62 +/- 14 W) than controls ((V) over dot O-2 3.9 +/- 0.6 METs; WR, 74 +/- 13 W). %HRreserve, (32.6 +/- 7.7%) was also significantly lower compared with controls (37.6+/-8.3%), while %HRmax, was not different. RPE was also similar in diabetics (12.4 +/- 1.5) and controls (12.9 +/- 1.2). however, it was significantly lower in diabetic patients aged 60-69 years (11.8 +/- 2.0) and those with distal symmetric sensory neuropathy (12.2 +/- 1.0). Our results indicate reduced exercise capacity in Japanese Type 2 DM males and the exercise intensity of 60%HRmax, 30%HRreserve, and RPE 12 is recommended in elderly diabetics and those with diabetic sensory neuropathy.     身体活動は虚血性心疾患,高血圧,2型糖尿病,肺炎・肺がん,うつなどの疾病リスクを低減させることが知られている。しかしながら,日本人の身体活動不足者は60.2%と報告されており,運動習慣者が極めて少ないことがわかる。一方,アメリカスポーツ医学会はスポーツ活動とともに日常の身体活動を増やす指導を推奨している。そこで,身体活動増進プログラム(e-Learning)を開発し,本学授業において活用している。この身体活動増進プログラムは健康関連体力を高める持久的運動,レジスタンストレーニング,ストレッチングを,理論学習後,自ら自分自身のためにプログラムを作成し,実践・記録を行うことで,習慣化をはかるものである。本研究はこの身体活動増進プログラムの短期効果(授業前後)と長期効果(1年後)を検証する。2018年に「するスポーツ演習」履修者(抽選当選者:介入群119名)と履修できなかった学生(抽選落選者:統制群63名)を対象に,授業前・後そして1年後に,活動量計を用いて身体活動量を測定するとともに,レジスタンストレーニング量(RT),ストレッチング量(St)を調査した。3回の調査を終了し,調査不備のなかった対象は介入群36名(分析対象率30%),統制群45名(分析対象率71%)であった。分析は介入前,介入後,介入1年後の各値について二元配置分散分析を行った。その結果,身体活動増進プログラムは介入前後では身体活動量,RT,Stのいずれもが有意に増加した。また,介入終了1年後において,介入群の身体活動量は統制群に比べると介入後の低下割合が少なく,維持できた。介入終了1年後のRTとStは減少し,介入前の値と差がなかった。したがって,大学生を対象とした身体活動増進プログラムは,身体活動量は短期効果および長期効果,そしてRT,Stは短期効果があることが示唆された。

    新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大のため、当初予定していた調査・研究の多くを本年度も断念せざるを得なかった。まず、トランスジェンダーの人の体力・運動能力測定については、研究協力者に体力・運動能力測定を実施していく施設まで来ていただくことが、感染予防の観点から困難であるため実施することができなかった。また、大学生を対象とした質問紙調査も、大学構内への入構制限などが継続する中でみあわせざるを得なかった。
    一方、本年7月に開催された東京オリンピックに男性から女性へ性別移行したトランスジェンダーの選手が女性として出場したことを受けて、当初予定していなかった以下の調査を実施した。すなわち、このトランス女性のオリンピック競技への出場がテレビ、新聞などで報じられ、トランス女性のスポーツ参加に関する肯定、否定両面からの意見がネット上に発信された。そこで、これらのネット上での言説の収集、分析を行った。
    肯定的な意見としては、このトランス女性の参加は、スポーツにおいて性の多様性を認めることの象徴であり、本人の性自認が尊重された結果として当然のことである、などがあった。一方で、否定的な意見として、トランス女性の女性競技への参加は女性アスリートにとって不公平であり、脅威であると主張する批判も数多く認められた。選手本人の性自認の尊重と競技の公平性とのバランスをどのようにしてとり、人々が納得できるようにするかが課題であると考えられた。

    The research design assumed that educational effect could be acquired as communication capability, and observed how interactive sport educational activities might influence communication capability. Although two kinds of interactive sport educational activities increased the communication skill score, the interactive sport educational activity with the directions from a supervisor had no positive effects. It was suggested that a student's independent activity is important for the improvement in the communication capability introduced by interactive sport educational activities.

    The relation of morphological development and the normal process of cortical bone acquisition was investigated and was examined in 2001. As the result, it was possible to clarify becoming relative bone weak stage in which the acquisition of the bone strength has not overtaken the morphological development, process over the junior high school stage since later stage of elementary school. This result was reported in the JBMM (Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism).
    In 2002, the effect of daily physical activity including a physical education class in the development of physical fitness. and motor ability during growth period was reported. This result was reported in the JJPS (Journal of the Japan Pediatric Society).
    It was possible to clarify frequency of physical activity in childhood and adolescence in 2003. As the result, sports activity of the junior high school student increased in comparison with the pupil in other school stage. In addition, the junior high school student rose most on the fracture rate. This result was reported in the JJPS (Journal of the Japan Pediatric Society).
    From these results, the new proposal on composition of physical education class from elementary school to high school was arranged as a report.
