    Abstract

    Additively manufactured (AMed) titanium products are typically produced by electron beam melting (EBM), since oxidation of titanium alloy surface can be suppressed in vacuum environment. The surface roughness of AMed titanium products becomes more than 200 µm Rz, and the very rough surface would lead to reduction in fatigue strength. Therefore, a post surface finishing process is required. Abrasive blasting is one of the common surface smoothing processes of AMed metal products. Large surface roughness can be decreased, and compressive residual stress can be introduced to the surface. However, there is a limitation to reduction of surface roughness to several µm Rz. On the other hand, it was recently found that AMed metal surface produced by powder bed fusion with laser beam could be smoothed by large-area electron beam (LEB) irradiation. However, it is difficult to smooth surface with large initial surface roughness, and a tensile residual stress may be generated on the surface. In this study, surface smoothing and change in residual stress of AMed titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) were proposed by combination of grit blasting and LEB irradiation. Surface roughness of AMed Ti-6Al-4 V alloy significantly decreases from 265 to about 2.0 µm Rz by combination of grit blasting and LEB irradiation. Reduction rate of surface roughness by LEB irradiation linearly increases with decreasing mean width of blasted surface. Influence of the mean width on smoothing effect by LEB irradiation can be explained by thermo-fluid analysis. Moreover, tensile residual stress caused by LEB irradiation can be reduced when LEB is irradiated to blasted surface.

    Abstract

    Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V has been widely applied to medical, automotive, and aerospace industries due to its excellent properties such as high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. On the other hand, additive manufacturing (AM) technology can give the freedom of design of the products. In order to spread the AMed products, the joining of AMed and wrought products are required, and it is important to understand the joint characteristics. In this study, butt welding of Ti6Al4V plate was conducted by fiber laser in argon shielding, and the joint characteristics of laser weld wrought/wrought, AMed/AMed, and AMed/wrought Ti6Al4V plates were experimentally investigated. The AMed plate has higher tensile strength than wrought plate but the elongation of AMed plate is smaller, since AMed plate has α’ martensite due to rapid cooling during laser irradiation in AM process. Then, the laser weld joint of AMed/AMed plates has higher tensile strength, but smaller elongation than that of wrought/wrought plates. The weld joint of AMed/wrought plates shows good welding state, since small heat input leads to formation of small weld bead with higher hardness between wrought and AMed plates.

    <title>Abstract</title>The feasibility of joining laser metal deposited Ti6Al4V sheets using laser beam welding was investigated in this article. The additive manufactured sheets were joined using a 3 kW CW YLS-2000-TR ytterbium laser system. The mechanical properties and microstructure of the welded additive manufactured parts (AM welds) were compared with those of the wrought sheets welded using the same laser process. The welds were characterized and compared in terms of bead geometry, microhardness, tensile strength, fractography, and microstructure. The differences in characteristics are majorly found in the width of the bead and tensile strength. The bead width of AM welds appear wider than the wrought welds, and the wrought welds exhibited higher tensile strength and ductility than the AM welds.

    Titanium and its alloys, particularly Ti6Al4V, which is widely utilized in the marine and aerospace industries, have played a vital role in different manufacturing industries. An efficient and cost-effective way of joining this metal is by laser welding. The effect of laser power and welding speed on the tensile, microhardness, and microstructure of Ti6Al4V alloy is investigated in this paper. Results show that the microhardness is highest at the fusion zone and reduces towards the base metal. The microstructure at the fusion zone shows a transformed needle-like lamellar alpha phase, with a martensitic alpha' phase observed within the heat affected zone. Results of tensile tests show an improved tensile strength compared to the base metal.

    In micro machining of monocrystalline diamond by pulsed laser, unique processing characteristics appeared only under a few ten picosecond pulse duration and a certain overlap rate of laser shot. Cracks mostly propagate in parallel direction to top surface of workpiece, although the laser beam axis is perpendicular to the surface. This processed area can keep diamond structure, and its surface roughness is smaller than R-a = 0.2 mu M. New laser micro machining method to keep diamond structure and small surface roughness is proposed. This method can contribute to reduce the polishing process in micro machining of diamond.     <p>Zirconia has been widely applied for cutting tools and biomaterials, since it has superior mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness, bending strength and biocompatibility in ceramics. In order to maintain its surface functions for long-term, further improvement of wear resistance for zirconia has been required. In this study, improvement of wear resistance for zirconia is proposed by large-area electron beam (EB) irradiation. Experimental results show that mean width in roughness curve of zirconia surface increases with increasing the energy density of EB, although the maximum height in surface roughness is almost same as the ground surface. In friction and wear test, coefficient of friction reduces with increasing the energy deinsity of EB since ball material smoothly slides on the EB irradiated zirconia surface. Furthermore, it is made clear that wear resistance of zirconia significantly improves by the EB irradiation under appropriate energy density.</p>

    In large-area electron beam (EB) irradiation method developed recently, high energy density of EB can be obtained without focusing the beam. Therefore, the wide area of material surface can be melted instantly, and high efficient surface finishing is possible. Moreover, surface functions such as corrosion resistance and water repellency of the metal molds were improved by the large-area EB irradiation, since thin resolidified layer was formed on the metal surface. It is expected that thick modified layer is effective to maintain their surface functions for long-term. Therefore, control and prediction of the modified layer thickness are important in order to obtain appropriate modified layer thickness on metals with different material properties. In this study, variations of modified layer thickness on metals with different material property are experimentally investigated. Furthermore, electron behavior during large-area EB irradiation is simulated by using an electron track analysis, and prediction of the modified layer thickness is tried with temperature distributions by using an unsteady heat conduction analysis. Experimental results show that the modified layer thickness increases with increasing energy density. The thickness with high relative permeability is larger than that with low one. Analytical results of the modified layer thickness in unsteady heat conduction analysis show quantitative agreement with experimental ones. Furthermore, the modified layer thickness on the metals with different thermal property and density is also discussed. Then, the modified layer thickness of metals with different material property can be predicted by using our unsteady heat conduction analysis model. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

    In recent years, one common cure for losses in joint function caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis is replacement with an artificial joint. For this reason, it is necessary to add osteoconductivity to artificial joint component surfaces that make contact with bone, thereby reducing the period of time necessary to fixate the bone tissue and the artificial joint component. With the intent of efficiently machining the joint shape by electrical discharge machining (EDM) and simultaneously formation of a surface with osteoconductivity, this study discusses the possibility of adding osteoconductivity to a titanium EDMed surface.

    In large-area electron beam (EB) irradiation method, uniformly high energy density can be obtained without focusing the beam. Large-area EB can be used for melting and evaporating metal surface instantly. It was clarified that high efficient surface finishing of metal mold steels, ceramics and cemented carbides was possible by the large-area EB irradiation. Furthermore, the tip of convex shape was often rounded after large-area EB irradiation with remarkable material removal at the tip. This phenomenon is probably caused due to the heat accumulation and electrons concentration at the tip. However, electrons behavior near the workpiece surface during large-area EB irradiation has not yet been clarified. In this study, electron track analysis was conducted in order to clarify electrons behavior during large-area EB irradiation. At first, analytical model of the large-area EB irradiation apparatus was built. Then, the EB diameter on the workpiece surface was experimentally measured with different energy density in order to evaluate the accuracy of our analytical model. The calculated results of EB diameter were in good agreement with the experimental ones. In addition, the electrons concentration phenomenon at the tip of convex shape was clarified by calculating energy density distribution on the surface obtained with electron track analysis. The analytical results indicated that the energy density increased from edge to tip of convex shape, while the energy density was constant in the case of planar shape. Experimented results also showed that removal thickness increases with high relative permeability. These results were similar tendency to the energy density distribution. Therefore, electrons concentration on the tip could be simulated by the electron track analysis.

    In laser processing of silver nanowire transparent conductive film covered with an acrylic resin layer, effects of pulse duration on electrical insulation and surface quality were experimentally investigated by using nanosecond pulsed laser. The minimum laser fluence to achieve the stable electrical insulation by removal of silver nanowire became small with decreasing the pulse duration, but shorter pulse duration showed drastic change of removal trace area of silver nanowires at the boundary region of laser fluence to change conductive state to insulation one. In contrast, longer pulse duration around 200 ns indicated almost constant small removal trace area of silver nanowires, and wide processing window to perform the stable electrical insulation with small removal trace area of silver nanowires can be expected by using a proper long pulse duration in nanosecond pulsed laser processing.     In large-area electron beam (EB) irradiation method, corner tip of workpiece is generally rounded since removal of material at the tip is done preferentially. Investigation of the shape change is necessary to clarify rounding phenomenon with irradiation of EB. In this study, the shape changes of corner tips were experimentally investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observation of the cross sections. Then, electron track analysis in the EB irradiation was conducted to clarify an electron concentration at the tip. Unsteady heat conduction analysis at the tip was also done with considering the EB concentration at the tip and an electron penetration effect into the surface. The shape changes were estimated by simulation of temperature distribution at the tips. Experimental results show that the curvature radius increases with shot number of EB. The estimated shape changes show quantitatively good agreement with the experimental ones. These results indicate that the rounding phenomenon at the tips by large area EB irradiation can be predicted by our electron track and unsteady heat conduction analysis model. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.     A new method of periodic nanostructure formation on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surface has been developed, employing a femtosecond laser with a wavelength of 1045 nm. To generate structured films, the PET was placed in contact with a silicon (Si) wafer, followed by irradiation with the laser focused on the Si wafer, passing through the PET film. In order to evaluate the surface morphology, atomic force microscopy analysis was conducted on both treated and untreated PET surfaces. From the results, nanostructures with a period of 600 nm and height of 100 nm were formed on the PET film surface by laser treatment. A cell cultivation test was carried out on PET films with and without periodic nanostructures, showing that for nanostructured films, the cells (MG-63) were spread along the periodic grooves; in contrast, random cell spreading was observed for cultures grown on the untreated PET film.

    Recently, many surfacing processes, such as coating have been widely applied to the industrial products in order to improve the surface functions. One of the practical surfacing processes is a sputter deposition, in which the sputtered target material is deposited on the substrate surface. This method can be used not only for metals but also for insulators and plastics materials as substrate surface. In this study, the possibility of sputter deposition by using a large-area electron beam was discussed. If the target material deposits on the substrate surface simultaneously with the surface melting and resolidification of substrate material by large-area EB, the adhesion between the deposited film and the substrate surface would be strong. Alloy tool steel SKD11 was used as a substrate material, and pure metal tube made of nickel or titanium were used as a target material. Then, the substrate surface after EB irradiation was analyzed and the surface characteristics were investigated.

    Titanium (Ti) is an important biomaterial. We have used femtosecond laser irradiation to form periodic nanostructures on Ti plate for control of the cell spreading. In this study, periodic nanostructures with periodicities of 200, 300 and 600 nm were formed on a Ti plates using a femtosecond laser with wavelengths of 258, 388 and 775 nm, respectively. Cell spreading on the Ti plate for periodic nanostructures with periodicity of 200 nm lacked a definite direction, whereas cell spreadings on the Ti plate for periodic nanostructures with periodicities of 300 and 600 nm occurred along the grooves.

    Pure Titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys are the most used biomaterials. However, they have problem for bioactivity because metals have no biofunction. Therefore, adding new function to Ti and Ti alloys are necessary. One method to add new function is the creation of periodic structures on the biomaterial surfaces, which can control cell spreading. Femtosecond laser is one of the useful tools for creating periodic nanostructures, which can be created on metals and semiconductors by self-organizing in the laser focusing spot. In our previous study, the nanostructures could be formed on the Ti plate by using the femtosecond laser with fundamental wavelength of 775 nm. The periodicities of the nanostructures on the Ti plate was approximately 590 nm, which was shorter than the laser wavelength. Cells tests indicated that cell spreading clearly occurs along the grooves of the nanostructures. However, the influence of the periods of the nanostructure on cell spreading has not yet been investigated. It is expected that the periods can be varied by changing laser parameters, such as pulse widths, laser wavelengths, laser fluences, and number of shots. In this study, the periodic nanostructures are created on the Ti plate surface by using the femtosecond laser with fundamental wavelength of 790 nm. Then, influence of the pulse width and number of shots on the periods is investigated. In the experiments, laser beam is focused and scanned on the Ti plate surfaces. The laser irradiated areas are analysed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

    Processing characteristics of transparent conductive film containing silver nanowires by ns pulsed fiber lasers with various pulse duration were experimentally investigated in the view-points of insulating state and surface quality. The laser fluence achieving the insulation state became smaller with decreasing the pulse duration. Appearance of removed trace area of silver nanowires was varied by the pulse duration, and the removal area ratio of removed trace area to the whole one was evaluated to discuss the surface quality.     The applications of hierarchical micro/nano-structures, which possess properties of two-scale roughness, have been studied in various fields. In this study, hierarchical periodic micro/nano-structures were fabricated on nitinol, an equiatomic Ni-Ti alloy, using a femtosecond laser for the surface modification of intravascular stents. By controlling the laser licence, two types of surfaces were developed: periodic nano- and micro/nanostructures. Evaluation of water contact angles indicated that the nano-surface was hydrophilic and the micro/ nano-surface was hydrophobic. Endothelial cells aligned along the nano-structures on both surfaces, whereas platelets failed to adhere to the micro/nano-surface. Decorrelation between the responses of the two cell types and the results of water contact angle analysis were a result of the pinning effect. This is the first study to show the applicability of hierarchical periodic micro/nano-structures for surface modification of nitinol. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Although titanium (Ti) is a common biomaterial, controlling cell spreading by forming periodic structures using a femtosecond laser should improve its biocompatibility. Herein we investigate the influence of periodic nanostructures formed on the surface of a Ti plate on cell spreading. Nanostructures with a periodicity of 590 nm are formed using a femtosecond laser with a wavelength of 775 nm. Cell spreading on the plate without period structures lacks a definite direction, whereas cell spreading on the Ti plate with periodic structures occurs along the grooves, suggesting that forming periodic structures via a femtosecond laser can control cell spreading.

    Titanium dioxide (TiO2) film has photocatalytic properties and good biocompatibility. To expand the film application, formation of oxygen deficiencies in the film was one of the useful methods. Electrical resistance of the film can be decreased due to oxygen deficiencies formation. The local heating process in vacuum is a useful method to create the oxygen deficiencies in local area of the film. Electrical resistance might be locally decreased by local heating with a CW fiber laser. In our experiment, the films were irradiated with the laser in vacuum. Control of temperature on the film was very important for reducing the electrical resistance. Therefore, temperature monitoring of the laser focusing spot area on the film was performed. Temperature of the laser focusing spot area was increased as the laser intensity was increased. Then, the electrical resistance of the laser focusing spot area was decreased as the laser intensity was increased. Thus, electrical resistance of the laser focusing spot area was decreased as temperature of the laser focusing spot area was increased. These results indicated that electrical resistance of the laser focusing spot area was controlled by changing temperature on the laser focusing spot area.

In this process, lines are written on TiO2 film by femtosecond laser irradiation, where the lines have a lower electrical resistance than the surrounding film. By heating with a CW fiber laser in air, the low electrical resistance lines are erased and their electrical resistances increase. When the erased areas on the TiO2 film are irradiated with the femtosecond laser, the lower electrical resistance lines can be rewritten on the film surface. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.     Titanium dioxide (TiO2) film is an important biomaterial used to improve the biocompatibility of titanium (Ti). We have used a film coating method with an aerosol beam and femtosecond laser irradiation to form periodic structures on biomaterials for control of the cell spreading. The control of cell spreading on biomaterials is important for the development of advanced biomaterials. In this study, nanostructures with periods of 130 and 230 nm were formed on a film using a femtosecond laser with wavelengths of 388 and 775 nm, respectively. The nanostructure period on the film was 30% of the laser wavelengths. Periods produced with wavelengths of 388 and 775 nm were calculated using a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) model and the experimental results for both wavelengths were in the range of the calculated periods, which suggests that the mechanism for the formation of the periodic nanostructures on the film with a femtosecond laser was due to the excitation of SPPs.     Titanium (Ti) is widely used in biomaterials because of its excellent anti-corrosion properties and high strength. However, Ti has no biological function, so its bioactivity must be improved. Coating a titanium dioxide (TiO2) film on a Ti plate surface has been shown to improve the biocompatibility of Ti plates. If periodic nanostructures were formed on the film surface, the direction of cell spreading might be controlled by the direction of the grooves. Controlling cell spreading on biomaterials would contribute to the creation of advanced biomaterials. In this paper, a TiO2 film was formed on a Ti plate with an aerosol beam composed of sub micron-sized TiO2 particles and helium gas. Periodic nanostructures, lying perpendicular to the laser electric field polarization vector, were formed on the film by scanning the femtosecond laser focusing spot. The period and height of the periodic nanostructures were about 230 nm and 150 nm, respectively. In a cell test, cell spreading was observed along the grooves of the periodic nanostructures; in contrast, cell spreading did not show a definite direction on TiO2 a film without periodic nanostructures. These results suggest that the direction of cell spreading on the film can be controlled by periodic nanostructure formation generated using a femtosecond laser. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V.     Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a functional ceramic with unique photoconductive and photocatalytic properties. In our previous study, a TiO2 film was formed by aerosol beam irradiation. The films were darkened by femtosecond laser irradiation in air. Then electrical resistance of the darkened area on the film decreased. The heating process is also a useful method to vary the TiO2 film property. Local heating can be performed by using a continuous wave (CW) fiber laser. In this study, the film was irradiated with a commercial CW fiber laser in vacuum. Laser irradiated area on the film was also darkened after CW fiber laser irradiation. The electrical resistance of the darkened area on the films was decreased as laser fluence was increased. Electrical resistance of the darkened area after CW fiber laser irradiation in vacuum was much smaller than that after femtosecond laser irradiation.

    Titanium dioxide (TiO2) films were irradiated with a femtosecond laser to alter their photoconductive properties. The laser wavelength and pulse duration were 775 nm and 150 fs, respectively. The TiO2 films irradiated with the femtosecond laser were darkened without changing the topography of the TiO2 film surface. The electrical resistances of the films as a function of time were measured under visible-light illumination. The transient electrical resistances decreased as time was increased after turning on the light. There were two stages in the reduction process of the electrical resistance.

    Rewriting process of lower electrical resistance lines on a titanium dioxide (TiO2) film was developed. In this process, lower electrical resistance lines were written on a TiO2 film without producing their surface topography changes by femtosecond laser irradiation. By heating with an electrical furnace under air, the electrical resistance of these lines was come back to the higher resistance with no topography changes. This result indicated that the lines could be erased by the heating method under air. When the erasing-treated area was irradiated with a femtosecond laser, the lower electrical resistance lines could be rewritten with no topography changes of the film surface.     Various types of microstructures are formed on material surfaces by femtosecond laser irradiation. The formation conditions depend on the laser irradiation conditions, the materials, and so on. In this study, microstructures formed on stainless steel by femtosecond laser irradiation were investigated. The laser fluence and the number of irradiated laser pulses were changed to explore the microstructure formation conditions. Different types of periodic structures were found to be formed depending on the laser fluence and the number of irradiated laser pulses.

    Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are the subject of important research in materials science and processing. Ti-based BMGs are expected to be utilized as new biomaterials because they have high strength, low Young's modulus and excellent corrosion resistance. Bioactivity might depend on developing a microstructure on the surface of the BMG A femtosecond laser is a good tool for forming a surface microstructure. Ti-Zr-Cu-Pd bulk alloys were irradiated with femtosecond lasers. After the irradiation, the BMGs were treated using a hydrothermal electrochemical method. The results of soaking BMGs in simulated body fluid suggest that the BMGs with a surface microstructure have better bioactivity than the BMGs without.

    Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has a variety of functions, but cannot be activated by visible-light illumination. It is importance to extend the activity of TiO2 into the visible-light, which comprises the larger portion of the room light. Therefore, the visible-light activated TiO 2 is required. We developed it with the femtosecond laser irradiation. The TiO2 films irradiated with femtosecond laser were darkened without changing topography of the TiO2 film surface. In the visible-light photocataltic function measurements, the TiO2 films were evaluated with the acetaldehyde decomposition test. The concentration of acetaldehyde was decreased to over time. This result indicated that visible-light activated photocatalyst function of TiO2 films were generated by femtosecond laser irradiation. © 2013 Copyright SPIE.

    Periodic nanostructures formation on Titanium dioxide (TiO2) film by scanning of femtosecond laser beam spot at fundamental and second harmonic wave is reported. Titanium (Ti) is one of the most widely used for biomaterials, because of its excellent anti-corrosion and high mechanical properties. However, Ti implant is typically artificial materials and has no biofunction. Hence, it is necessary for improving the bioactivity of Ti. Recently, coating of TiO2 film on Ti plate surface is useful methods to improve biocompatibility of Ti plate. Then, if periodic nanostructures were formed on the film surface, cell spreading might be controlled at one direction. We propose periodic nanostructures formation on TiO2 film by femtosecond laser irradiation. Cell spread could be controlled along the grooves of periodic nanostructures. In the experiments, the film was formed on Ti plate with an aerosol beam. A commercial femtosecond Ti : sapphire laser system was employed in our experiments. Periodic nanostructures, lying perpendicular to the laser electric field polarization vector, were formed on the film at fundamental and second harmonic wave. Periodic nanostructures were also produced on Ti plate with femtosecond laser. The period of periodic nanostructures on the film was much shorter than that on Ti plate. By cell test, there was a region of cell spreading along the grooves of periodic nanostructures on the film formed with femtosecond laser at fundamental wave. On bare film surface, cell spreading was observed at all direction. These results suggest that direction of cell spread could be controlled by periodic nanostructures formation on the film.

    The surface of Ti-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) was irradiated by the femto-second laser and microgrooves were formed on the surface. The titanate nanomesh layers were fabricated on the micro-grooved BMG surface by hydrothermal-electrochemical (H-E) treatment changing the conditions of the concentration of electrolyte solution (0 and 5 M) and applying current density (0-200 mA/cm 2). The bone-inducing capacity of the samples with different H-E treatment was confirmed by soaking them in a simulated body fluid for 12 days. The H-E treatment in higher concentration 5 M NaOH aq. and applying higher current density above 0.5 mA/cm 2 exhibited excellent bioactivity inducing large hydroxyapatite crystallites. © 2011 Materials Research Society.

    情報化社会において重要なインターフェースのフレキシブル化に貢献できる銀ナノワイヤ透明導電膜に対する近赤外パルスレーザによる高品位除去加工を目指して,試料の光学特性の評価,レーザ照射系のセットアップを実施した後,基礎的な加工特性を評価した.
    照射されたレーザ光のうち反射および透過することなく材料に吸収されるレーザ光が加工プロセスに主に寄与する.そこで積分球を備えた分光光度計を用いて,銀ナノワイヤ導電膜,PET,ハードコート層,銀ナノワイヤを保持しているアクリル系樹脂のみの透過率,および反射率を計測することにより吸収率を算出したところ,波長1umでは光吸収率は数パーセント程度であった.
    次に,レーザ光スポット内における均一的な材料除去を目指してレーザ光強度分布の均一化を行った.ナノ秒パルスレーザにおいては,出力されたレーザ光を50um角コアの光ファイバへ入射させて集光することで,矩形で均一な強度分布を得た.一方,ピコ秒とフェムト秒パルスレーザではマスクを用いた結像光学系を用いることで,矩形で均一な強度分布のレーザ光を得た.
    そして,作製した光学系を用いてパルス痕が重ならない条件において,200fs,1ps,10ps,10ns,100ns,500ns程度のパルス幅による銀ナノワイヤの基礎的な加工特性を評価した.測定電圧DC25Vで抵抗値が20MΩ以上となるような絶縁特性が得られる照射条件においては,パルス幅が短い方が熱的な影響は少なくなるものの,オーバーコート層に存在する直径100nm程度の銀ナノワイヤが除去された後の除去痕が顕在化し,視覚的に認識されやすくなった.この視認性を評価するために,色差(未加工部と加工部の差)を色差計により,透過光の拡散性を示すヘーズ(Haze)をヘーズメータによって評価したところ,視覚的な傾向を数値として評価できる可能性が示唆された.

    Bottom surface smoothing of high aspect ratio hole by EB polishing was proposed. As a basic study for control of magnetic field, magnet was set under the hole bottom surface, and magnetic field lines near the workpiece in large-area EB irradiation were calculated by electric magnetic field analysis. The magnetic field lines distributions show that the EB can be guided to the hole bottom surface since electrons tend to spirally move along the magnetic field lines. Experimental results clarified that the bottom surface of high aspect ratio hole can be uniformly smoothed by guiding the EB to the surface under control of magnetic field.

    For high-performance surface finishing of metal molds by large-area electron beam irradiation method, the shape-changing phenomena were firstly discussed experimentally and analytically by using electron track analysis with electro-magnetic field simulation model and heat conduction analysis. Then, the applicability of this method to micro-burring were investigated, and it was clarified that high-efficient removal of micro-burr generated in thermal processing was possible by large-area EB irradiation method. Furthermore, control of electron beam track by changing magnetic field in the operating chamber was discussed, and the finishing of hole bottom surface was tried. As a result, the bottom surface could be successively finished under appropriate magnetic field and EB conditions. In addition, the influence of workpiece material properties on the surface smoothing characteristics were experimentally and analytically discussed for wide application of this method.

    Titanium alloys are the most used biomaterials. However, they have insufficient bioactivity. Therefore, it is required to add new function to titanium alloys. One method to add new function is the creation of periodic nanostructures on the surfaces, which can control cell spreading. Then, femtosecond laser is one of the useful tools to create periodic nanostructures which can be created on various metals by self-organizing in the laser focusing spot.
    In this study, control of cell spreading on titanium material was examined by periodic nanostructures formation with femtosecond laser. It is clarified that period of the periodic nanostructures can be varied by laser wavelength. Then, cell test was conducted by using the titanium material which have periodic nanostructures with different periods. Results of cell test show that periods of about 300 and 600 nm are useful for control of cell spreading on titanium material surface.

    昨年度で酸化チタン(TiO2)膜への周期的微細構造形成が可能であることや、骨芽細胞が周期的微構造の溝に沿って伸展する結果が得られた。今年度は形状変化だけではなく、材料特性の変化にも着目した。TiO2は真空雰囲気下で電気炉加熱を行うと酸素欠陥が生じることが知られている。レーザー照射により周期的微細構造を形成した酸化チタンに対して真空雰囲気下で電気炉を用いた全体加熱を行ったところ、周期的微細構造の形状は維持されていた。骨芽細胞を用いて培養試験を行った結果、細胞が溝に沿って伸展する結果が示唆された。
    また、更なる高度生体材料の創製を目指し、細胞伸展に最適な周期について検討した。周期はレーザーの波長の変化によって制御を試みた。さらに、周期的微細構造形成メカニズムについても検討した。申請者らのグループでは、TiO2膜に対してフェムト秒レーザーを照射すると、多光子プロセス等による電子励起が生じる可能性を示唆している。すなわち、レーザー照射によりTiO2膜の表層への高密度電子励起層の形成が予測され、高密度電子励起層及び膜との界面へ表面プラズモン・ポラリトン(SPP)が形成される可能性が考えられる。SPPの波長が周期に起因すると考える本モデルをSPPモデルと呼ぶとする。波長775 nmの第二高調波である388 nmをTiO2膜上に照射すると周期的微細構造が形成され、TiO2膜上における周期はレーザー波長の30%程度であることが明らかになった。得られた周期の実測値は、SPPモデルによって計算される周期の範囲内であった。すなわち、TiO2膜への周期的微細構造形成は、SPPモデルによって形成される可能性が示唆された。以上のTiO2膜に対する周期的微細構造形成メカニズムに関する成果は、英文の論文(査読有り)において成果をまとめている。国内外の会議においても多数の成果を報告している。
