    This article introduces instructional material for a four-week study of the partitive article, the indefinite article, the definite article, and the demonstrative determiner in French as a Foreign Language at the university level in Japan, as well as its study design. First, the grammatical presentations of these determiners are analyzed in four widely distributed textbooks. It is shown that utterances are presented out of context and that translation favors the search for morphosyntactic rather than functional equivalence. Second, the instructional material and its study design are introduced. The phases of materialization and verbalization are borrowed from Concept-Based Language Instruction. The conception of the material is based on the triadic relationship of the sign in Peircean semiotics, the partial object corresponding to the semantic properties of the determiner, and the sign to the determiner. In the study, participants are asked to verbalize their understanding of the material and then to explain the use of the determiner in the context of a short video excerpt of a conversation where the determiner is used. They are expected to build up links between the generalization of the grammatical explanations and the use of the determiner in the context of the excerpt.

    This article reports on the use of an experimental material to enable discrimination between the periphrastic future (PF) and simple future (SF) intended for initial level university students in Japan studying French as a Foreign Language. A dyad was filmed using the material in a task on tense choice in short dialogues modelled on Galperin’s procedure. A discourse and interaction analysis were then performed on excerpts of the videoed session where the participants interacted with the material. It was found that the material enabled the dyad to complete the task. Moreover, if the pragmatic effect of the SF was not fully grasped, the analysis nonetheless showed that the participants transformed the linguistic knowledge from the material into metalinguistic resources of their own, and that internalization of the targeted concepts occurred to some extent.

    The research results of this project are of 3 types. The analysis of verbal temporality and successive experiments have allowed the creation of an intuitive, highly visual teaching material, allowing non-native speakers to "enter" the system of representation of actions in French. The pedagogical approach - how to use the material in which activities - has also been widely documented. It has been shown that equipment must meet contingent requirements, which are reflected in the course of activities. These activities were created on the principle of problem solving, for which the hardware offers keys. Finally, this project has shed new light on the process of internalizing in real time the concepts represented in the material at the very moment of the realization of the activities.
