The effects of climate change on agriculture are a major concern for global food security. In this study, the impacts of climate change on rainfed rice production in the granary of Cambodia were examined on a basin scale by developing and applying a combined model consisting of a crop model and a basin-scale distributed hydrological model. The response of rice production to soil-water availability was simulated for past (1981–2000) and future (2041–2060, 2081–2100) periods. From 34 general circulation models (GCMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), 5 GCMs were selected by evaluating monthly rainfall in the past. Although annual rainfall was projected to increase by all five selected GCMs, notable decreases in rainfed rice production were projected with 3 GCMs, while small changes were projected with the other 2 GCMs. The main factor restricting future rice production was soil water availability, brought by the projected change in the seasonal distribution of rainfall and the projected more severe dry spells in the early monsoon season. The results suggest the importance of the selection and bias correction of GCMs to force rice crop models and of the simulation of soil water flow on a basin scale for the assessment of rain-fed rice production. In particular, improvements in projections of rainfall amounts over shorter periods rather than annual or seasonal periods, which fit within the time scales of rice plant growth, were suggested to be important.

Abstract
The dependencies of the planting date on rainfall and soil moisture in paddy fields in Cambodia were analyzed to quantify farmers’ empirical knowledge regarding their decision of the planting date. Remote sensing data from multiple satellites covering the 2003–2019 period were analyzed. The planting dates in rain-fed paddies ranged from April to August, with large spatial variations and year-to-year fluctuations. In years when planting was suppressed in April and May, planting was extensively enhanced in June and August compared to normal years, and vice versa. Over the northeastern side of Tonle Sap Lake and south of Phnom Penh city, the areas planted in April and May were found to have positive correlations with rainfall and soil moisture, suggesting that wetter-than-average conditions encouraged farmers to plant earlier in the season. In contrast, this relationship was unclear on the western side of Tonle Sap Lake, where the rainfall amounts were larger throughout the year than in other areas in Cambodia. In this region, the relationship between the planting area and soil water availability was either unclear or was even slightly negative from June to August. Since more frequent dry spells have been detected after the onset of the rainy season in recent years, further studies and disseminations of potential changes in dry spells are important for the agronomic adaptation of planting dates under climate change.

Rice is by far the most important crop in Cambodia. The improvement of its productivity is strongly recommended, but information about cultivation environment, management and their effects on rice production in farmers' paddy fields is quite limited. This study periodically measured the leaf area index (LAI) by using a plant canopy analyzer and conducted yield, water, soil and management investigations in 77 farmers' paddy fields in the Bakan district, Pursat province, Cambodia in 2014. Because the LAI showed linear growth in almost all farmers' fields, the LAI growth rate was determined by linear regression. The grain yield ranged from 70.8 gm(-2) to 499.0 gm(-2) and was positively correlated with the maximum LAI. The variability in the maximum LAI was mainly explained by the LAI growth rate, while the growth period had a significant correlation with the maximum LAI only in the broadcast fields, where earlier planting led to larger LAI. The result of the ANCOVA shows that the LAI growth rate was affected by seeding date, water status and soil condition (C content and C/N ratio) while the effect of planting method (transplanting/broadcasting) and N fertilizer was non-significant. The non-significance of effect of N fertilizer may imply the timing or method of application is improper. The results suggest that the key means to improve rice productivity are effective application of fertilizer and selection of planting methods dependent on the soil fertility, together with water-saving irrigation method. Rice yields at the Sangker river basin in western Cambodia are simulated by a coupled model of the distributed hydrological model WEB-DHM and the rice growth model SIMRIW-rainfed. The results are validated by in-situ statistical data and FAOSTAT. Then, future rice yields are also simulated by using GCMs outputs. In addition, a simple irrigation model is introduced into the coupled model. By using this model, rice yields in consideration of climate change and irrigation are assessed.
In this study, effectiveness of irrigation in this river basin is shown for both of the present and future climates. The results showed that, by constructing irrigation facilities, a stable rice yield can be obtained even if no yield is obtained at rain-fed paddy fields. Also, this study showed that a variation of future rainfall pattern will affect a variation of rice yield.

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. During the postmonsoon season, a small linear cloud system has been observed over this lake in early morning, while the sky above the surrounding land is clear. Although this cloud system is apparently generated by land breezes, previous studies on land-lake (sea) circulation have suggested that environmental factors at low latitudes inhibit development of nocturnal land breezes. In this study, we investigate the mechanism of these early morning clouds through numerical simulation. The simulations show a linear updraft system over the lake, forming along the southwest lakeshore around 22:00 and moving northeast to the middle of the lake. The heavier air mass from the land meets the extraordinarily warm and humid air mass over the lake, triggering updrafts under the conditionally convective instability. The characteristic high surface water temperature was favorable for generation of the land breeze and updraft systems. That high surface water temperature of the lake is produced by the tropical climate along with efficient energy absorption because of the shallowness of the water body. This unique feature can generate a clear nocturnal land breeze circulation accompanying a migrating updraft system over the lake despite its low latitude. Key Points Land-breeze develops even though this lake is located in the low-latitudes. A lined-up cloud is formed at night over the lake by the very hot lake water. The convection migrates over the lake by the katabatic wind. ©2013. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved.

Solar radiation is an important input to many empirical equations for estimating evaporation, which in turn plays all important role in the hydrologic cycle in the Lower Mekong River Basin due to the high evaporation potential of the tropical monsoon climate. Few proper meteorological data exist for the Lower Mekong River Basin, however, and the region's meteorological conditions, including seasonal variation in radiation and evaporation, have not been clarified. In this study, ground-based hourly hydrometeorological data were collected at three observation stations located in different land-Use types (urban district, paddy area, and lake) in the Lower Mekong River Basin. These data were analysed to investigate the seasonal variation ill radiation and evaporation related to the diurnal distribution of rainfall. Contrary to common expectations, our results showed that rainy and dry seasons had nearly the same amount of solar radiation in the Lower Mekong River Basin because (1) rainy seasons had a relatively larger amount of extraterrestrial radiation; (2) no rain fell oil nearly half of the days during rainy seasons; and (3) the amount of solar radiation on rainy days reached 88% of that on non-rainy days. The third factor was attributed to the high frequency of evening rainfall. Furthermore, this rainfall-radiation relationship meant that rainy seasons had a large amount of net radiation due to the low reduction ratio of solar radiation and an increase in long-wave incoming radiation. Accordingly, rainy seasons had a high evaporation potential. Moreover, for the rain-fed rice paddies that prevail in this region, sufficient radiation during the rainy season Would be a great advantage for rice growing. • The Relationship between Seasonal Radiation Amount and Time of Rainfall Event in Tropical Monsoon Asia

On-site observation data for about 5 years in Cambodia, which is located in Tropical Monsoon Asia, were collected and analyzed to evaluate its hydro-meteorological environment in wet and dry seasons, especially focusing on radiation amount. Daily radiation amount was proved to be almost same for each season and its amount for rainy days reached about 88% of that for non-rainy days. This was shown to be attributed to the time of rainfall event: most of the rainfall events were concentrated in the evening whereas not so many events were there around noon. Moreover, duration of the rainfall events was about 1 hour for most cases. The result we obtained here is thought to be applicable not only in Cambodia but also in other areas in Tropical Monsoon Asia. Evapotranspiration must be accelerated in the wet season with high radiative energy under the wet environment so that this relationship between radiation amount and time of rainfall event should be taken into account for evaluating evapotranspiration amount in this area.

Surface soil moisture and the soil parameter are the essential variables that govern interactions between the land surface and atmosphere. A Land Data Assimilation System developed in The University of Tokyo (LDAS-UT) enables estimation of the surface soil moisture and soil parameter estimation at regional and global scales, to improve both our understanding of land-atmosphere interactions and the initial conditions of the General Circulation Model. The LDAS-UT comprises a land surface model (LSM), which calculates surface fluxes and soil moisture, a radiative transfer model (RTM), which estimates microwave brightness temperature, and an optimization scheme, which provides optimal values of soil moisture through minimizing the difference between the model output and observed brightness temperature. The LDAS-UT is initially optimized using LSM and RTM parameters such as soil texture, porosity with several months forcing data and satellite microwave brightness temperature data. These optimized parameter values are then used in a second phase, allowing retrieval of soil moisture data and the surface energy budget by assimilating the brightness temperature into the LSM in a daily assimilation cycle. The LDAS-UT was applied to Cambodia, and the estimated results of soil moisture in the dry season showed good agreement with ground-based observations of soil moisture.

Soil is the largest terrestrial carbon sotrage and a valuable medium for plant growth, thus conservation of organic soil is essential for ecosystem stability. We found that the physical aspects of pore structure and downward infiltration are strongly related to soil organic matter, and we clarified the mechanisms of soil organic matter accumulation and loss on a watershed scale. Downward infiltration increases soil organic matter, but soil runoff, the major cause of soil degradation, has a canceling effect on it. In addition to CEC and silt content, permeability factors also play a role in the conservation of soil organic matter at the continental level, indicating the importance of physical aspects in a wide area.

The Cordillera rice terraces in the northern part of the Philippines, known as a World Heritage, conveys the traditional culture of the region and exists as a production base for rice cropping and a part of natural water and material cycles. However, the collapse of rice terraces has become more serious, and proper and efficient farm management has been required to maintain the rice terraces. We focused on the structure of the rice terraces and the circulation of water and materials, and found that hard pan, which was formed in the lower layers of the paddy fields to store water, decided the stability of the rice terraces. There were some rice terraces with excess organic matter and the paddy can pond the water by small particle clogging without forming hard pan.If that was the case, mineral leaching occurred and stability of the paddy becomes lower.
We can conclude that hard pan is invisible, but its formation is crucial for stable rice paddy management.

In this project, a distributed hydrological model and a crop growth model were dynamically coupled with improvements especially made on the land-surface process sub-model. The improved model was applied on a basin scale, and the impact assessment of climate change on agricultural water resources and rice production was conducted to derive the basin-scale future projection and its uncertainties (“quantitative assessment of scientific knowledge on climate change”). In addition, farmers’ empirical knowledge on agricultural management against year-to-year fluctuations in rainfall and water availability has been investigated through field surveys and remote sensing data, and its effectiveness and limitation under changing climate have been investigated. With results from these two approaches, the effective information for adaptation in agriculture under climate change has been distilled and discussed.

Radiosonde observation in Cambodia was conducted in this project, since there is currently no operational one. The sondes were released simultaneously from two stations in Cambodia, from paddy and from the Tonle Sap Lake. The observed data were used for the data assimilation for the regional climate model simulations with WRF, in order to clarify the mechanism of the locally-induced nocturnal precipitation over the rain-fed agricultural area at western country.
Through the comparison with the observed precipitation both from satellite and ground, it was shown that the simulated precipitation by WRF with data assimilation has been improved even only with day-time observation data. The simulated results also showed that not only night-time phenomena but also the development of the day-time lake-breeze circulation as well as the surface heat fluxes from various land-use types over land during daytime are the key for the better estimation of the nocturnal local precipitation in this region.
