In recent years, the number of international students in Japan has been increasing. They suffer from understanding indirect expressions in communication with Japanese people. In this study, we implemented and assessed the impacts of a novel instructional program aimed at teaching social skills in a high-context culture characterized by the frequent use of indirect expressions. We conducted two experiments with students in Japan. Experiment 1 included semi-structured interviews with international students in Japan. Interview analysis revealed that it is difficult to learn to use and understand the intent behind indirect expressions without having first-hand experience communicating with Japanese people who use indirect language, particularly regarding “sassuru” – expressions that allow for multiple interpretations. Experiment 1 highlights the presence of problems that cannot be solved simply by learning Japanese and the challenges of adapting to communication styles characterized by the frequent use of indirect expressions in high-context cultures. Based on Experiment 1, we provided social skills instruction to an experimental group of international students as a teaching intervention. Next, participants in the experimental group and control group (who had not received the social skills instruction) completed questionnaires before and after the experiment. Data analysis verified that the intervention participants (1) developed more awareness of, and interest in, the Japanese culture; (2) became more confident in their interpretation of expressions with multiple meanings and of silence; and (3) became more accepting of ambiguous expressions because they had developed greater understanding. Conversely, the control group participants did not experience similar notable changes.

The appreciation expressed by older Japanese adults receiving care from foreign health care workers and the influence of cross-cultural care on successful aging were investigated. Data were collected from older adults in care facilities with and without foreign health care workers through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire packet that included the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), the Meaningful Life Scale, a measure assessing perceived health status, and questions on relations with foreign care workers. The results of semi-structured interviews indicated that older adults had positive attitudes about foreign health care workers. Moreover, the "positive feelings" factor in the relationships with foreign health care workers significantly affected the GDS score. It was concluded that foreign health care working in care facilities improved older adults' well-being and contributed to successful aging.

Abstract
Background: In recent years, as a result of replication in psychological studies, it has been pointed out that many studies are not re-producible. This study aimed to verify if with or without reproducibility and test-retest reliability by replication of Japanese version of Smoking Decisional Balance Scale and Japanese version of Smoking Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale, which were translated and stand-ardized from overseas.
Method: The target persons were 156 former smokers (70 males, 86 females, average age 42.58±11.51 years). The interval between the first and second surveys was four weeks to measure test-retest reliability.
Results: It was reproduced that the score transits with changes in Fact Structure and Stages of Behavior Change similar to those in the previous study. Besides, retest reliability factor is 0.67 - 0.70.
Conclusion: The research revealed that Japanese version of Smoking Decisional Balance Scale and Japanese version of Smoking Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale are reliable and reflective.

The Giving and Receiving Instructions Skills (GRIS) Scale was developed by focusing on interactive behaviors when communicating information. A 40-item questionnaire was administered to nurses (N=324) in acute-care hospitals with 1–4 years of experience. A 40-item questionnaire was administered to nurses (N=324) in acute-care hospitals with 1–4 years of experience (N=115). Exploratory factor analysis extracted 14 items and five factors: "Giving supplementary information", Confirming with the partner", "Reconsidering and checking", "Insufficient examination of instructions", and "Supporting and requesting". Results indicated the adequate reliability of the GRIS Scale (α=.70–.82). Moreover, the GRIS scale showed a significant correlation with the Communication Skill Scale (r=.33–.43, p<.01) and the Attitudes and Behaviors Fostering Organizational Learning from Incidents (r=.43–.52, p<.01) Scale, which indicated the relevance of GRIS. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analysis indicated sufficient goodness of fit of the GRIS Scale. These findings demonstrate that the GRIS Scale has adequate reliability and validity.

This study investigated the cross-cultural social skills use of international students in Japan. One hundred and forty questionnaires were sent out and 102 were returned. Participants evaluated their skills use with 21 items pertaining to cross-cultural social skills in Japan, which were considered useful in forming interpersonal relationships with their Japanese hosts. They also evaluated how common such skills were in their own countries. The skills were divided into the following four categories: (a) skills used in Japan and recognized as being used in home countries, which seemed to be applications of original behavior repertory (Maintained skills); (b) skills used in Japan but not recognized in their own countries, which seemed to be developed in the Japanese sociocultural context (Acquired skills); (c) skills recognized in their home countries but not used in Japan, which seemed to be somehow suppressed in Japan (Avoided skills); and (d) skills rarely used in Japan and rarely recognized in their home countries, which seemed to be undesired (Neglected skills). Some skills were relatively common in their own countries but not always highly used in Japan. Students with higher Japanese proficiency or a longer duration of stay in Japan tended to show higher skills use. However, the assumption that students from neighboring countries were more skillful was not supported. The psychological background of cross-cultural social skills use was also discussed.

This research examined the behaviors that Japanese students expect from international students. Three kinds of questionnaires were conducted with Japanese university students related to (1) their expectations for international students' acceptance of Japanese culture, (2) their expectations in terms of international students' use of cross-cultural social skills, and (3) their recognition of international students' behaviors that follow or do not follow Japanese cultural norms. In a classroom situation, the Japanese students expected the behaviors necessary for accomplishing group assignments. In a peer group situation, they expected international students to be spontaneous in their communication. Finally, in a situation of extracurricular activities under peer pressure, Japanese students positively recognized the attitudes of international students in attempting to behave on the basis of Japanese culture.

In order to identify the typology of cross-cultural contact by Japanese hosts, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 Japanese students, who have experienced close interactions with international students. The narratives of the informants were analyzed on the basis of the framework of the AUC-GS learning model. The aspects of cross-cultural "awareness, understanding, and coping" were studied. The informants were examined with regard to whether they noticed the existence of cultural differences, understood the occurring mechanisms of cross-cultural problems, and successfully coped with those problems. The informants were divided into six categories. Some informants exhibited considerable awareness regarding cultural differences, understood problems between cultures, and thus, coped well. The educational challenges faced by Japanese host students are discussed in this study.

This research examines empirically the social support, especially cultural support for international students given by Japanese host students. 50 pairs of Japanese and international students answered a questionnaire, using quantitative scoring about the social support needs and perceived support of international students. The descriptive data regarding cultural support was also obtained and analyzed qualitatively. The results show that cultural support was relatively ranked high among other social support. Although there was no substantial discrepancy between social support needs and perceived support among the recognitions of the hosts and guests, Japanese students tend to put more emphasis on the understanding of international students' culture rather than explaining their culture to the guests. The future challenges for Japanese hosts are proposed.

• Willingness to Communicate in Japanese as a Third Language among International Students in Japan Reviewed

The present study examined the relationship between willingness to communicate (WTC) in English as second language (L2) and Japanese as third language (L3), and explored how some Japanese context-specific variables relate to WTC. The participants were 103 international students in Japan. Statistical analysis confirmed the hypothesis of a mutual negative relation between WTC in English and WTC in Japanese. That means that students who are more willing to communicate in English tend to be less willing to communicate in Japanese, and vice versa. An analysis of Japanese context variables and WTC discovered significant correlations. However, structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed a significant regression weight not from Japanese contexts to WTC as we hypothesized, but in the opposite direction. Japanese context variables seem to be not the antecedents but consequences of WTC. The implications of those findings are further discussed.

Cultural distances of Individualism-Collectivism and High-Low context are supposed to play an important role for cross-cultural adaptation of international students in Japan. A series of survey have been conducted for the comparison between guest and host groups. In this survey Japanese students as the host group sample in comparison with international students are investigated on these dimensions. Japanese students evaluated 1)themselves and 2)other Japanese people concerning: A)Individualism-Collectivism and B) High-Low context. People with higher or similar collectivistic orientation showed better adaptation to human relations and Japanese norms. People with higher or similar high-context tendencies showed better adaptation to human relations and Japanese norms. People with higher high-context tendencies showed better adaptation to human relations. Japanese students with higher collectivistic and high-context tendencies supposedly have an advantage adapting to Japanese culture.

The subjective cognition of aging by the elderly was investigated using the qualitative research method of semi-structured interviews. We selected ten healthy elderly people as informants (interviewees) that were aged 65 years or more, and lived independently (Male = 7, Female = 3, Age: M = 72.4, SD = 5.52). Results were suggestive of two kinds of aging. Those that thought, "The classification that I am an old person depends on the social system, but I am not actually old "were classified as "the socially aged." Those that thought, "I recognize that I am really old " were classified as the "the subjectively aged". These results indicate the need to be attentive to individual aspects of aging. Moreover, these cognitive patterns suggest ways of adapting to aging. The cognition that regarded aging as inevitable, natural, and common was classified as "adaptive acceptance".

The relation between caregiver stresses and stress relieving factors was investigated based on questionnaire data collected from 239 of 551 members in caregiver groups with bedridden and/or demented elderly in their families. A caregiver stress support model was proposed using a multifactorial analysis. Correlations among stressors (degree of help, profession of caregiver), the first evaluation of stress (burden), the second evaluation of stress (mental health: burnout, fatigue, self satisfaction), and mediation factors (social support, coping methods) were examined.
It was found that burden as the first evaluation is positively affected by the degree of dementia and the age of the elderly person, and personal relations with caregiver groups and sub-caregivers provide a negative correlation. Burnout as the second evaluation is positively correlated with burden and evasive coping (emotional discharge). Fatigue is reduced by sub-caregivers, and self satisfaction increases with coping responses toward problem solving. The stress relieving effect of social support was found to partially reduce burnout, but had only a limited effect in promoting mental health.

This study analyzed 251 completed questionnaires concerning the social support network of caregivers for elderly family members. The hierarchy of social support resources was assumed to be in the order of co-resident family members, non-resident family members, friends, and neighbors to professional caregivers. Using the subcategory comparison method showed that a lower member compensates for a higher member's absence for emotional and instrumental support, and thus a hierarchical compensation model was supported. Social support network members conformed to the task specificity model regarding emotional, minor and major instrumental support, companionship, and informational support. Further, for companionship and informational support, particular resources indicated that compensation depends upon task specificity. Therefore, revision of the hierarchical compensation model is suggested. Caregiver levels of life satisfaction in cases of coresident family support are than those of non-resident family support. The importance of family support, the possibilities of compensation, and the differences of social support networks that depend on the relationships between caregivers and caretakers, are discussed.

Intercultural adjustment of Japanese high school students who sojourned in the United States for one year is the focus of the study. Building relationships with host nationals using limited English competency is the challenge that seems basic to successful adjustment to life in the USA. A path model was constructed in which English competence leads to better social skills, which in turn affects the amount of social support gained from host nationals. This model was tested through structural equation modeling, and the model's fit to the data was satisfactory. The predictive roles of English proficiency and personality were suggested in a supplementary analysis.

A total of 221 responses were obtained from a survey of international students In Japan, regarding the facilitative effects of social network formation on their adjustment. Regression analyses were conducted to explore the relationships among four types of adjustment revealed in a preceding study (''general adjustment,'' ''self-control,'' ''affiliative'' and ''dependent''), network size, demographic variables, expected social support, etc. For each adjustment type, predictive variables were identified Two of the variables that showed network effects on adjustment were Japanese language proficiency and race (Asians vs. Westerners). From these results, it would appear that social network formation does facilitate adjustment, and insight into the effect of adjustment type and demographic variables on network functions was obtained. Furthermore, the actual conditions regarding network formation of international students in japan were revealed.

Cross-cultural adjustment of international students in Japan was approached through a comprehensive questionnaire that looked at various aspects of adjustment. Some 237 students of various national backgrounds participated in the study. Four factors of adjustment were attained: general adjustment, internally controlled adjustment, affiliation adjustment, and externally dependent adjustment. These four facets were analyzed with respect to several demographic traits of respondents. Some of the more important findings include the following: Asian subjects generally were less adjusted than those of Western and Latin American cultures
U-curve patterns with time were not evident in three of the four factors
those more proficient in the Japanese language did not prove to be generally better off than those less fortunate
and scholarship recipients were better adjusted than those relying on private sources for funding. © 1994.

Perceived social support and relationship satisfaction of international students in Japan were examined. A total of 221 international students responded to a questionnaire composed of items that questioned the demographic characteristics of their network members, type of relationship, equity in relationship and satisfaction with relationship. Contact, relationship type and nationality of supporters were critical determinants of overall perceived social support, while relationship type, contact and equity were important for determining satisfaction in the relationship. On-campus relationships were important in academic support, while offcampus relationships played vital roles in both. This study revealed the importance of taking into consideration off-campus supporters in a study of international student adjustment.

In order to determine some of the necessary social skills for cross-cultural adjustment of International students in Japan, their overt behavioral difficulties were analyzed. In the first survey, 24 students described (1) some of the Japanese behavior which were difficult for them to understand and follow, and (2) some of their own behavior which were misunderstood or not easily accepted by Japanese. Responses were summarized through the KJ method into the following six categories: indirect expression; social manners; suppressed expression; relationship with different genders; attitude toward foreigners; and group-oriented behavior. In the second survey, 202 students were asked to list up to three socially difficult situations and 102 valid responses were analyzed. Results showed that the following groups of subjects experienced particular difficulty in aspects that follow: 1. female: social manners, 2. Europeans and Latin Americans: suppressed expression, 3. South-east Asians: attitude toward foreigners. In comparison, the following groups were well off with respect to the following aspects: 1. South-east Asians: indirect expressions, and 2. those who have been in Japan a substantial time: group-oriented behavior. A training model for Japanese social skills was proposed.

The present study aims to develop a “gaming simulation” of drug selection by creating a simulated environment where medical errors occur. The game also incorporates elements such as calling out senior nurses and asking questions to them. The results reveal that three of the participant (one registered nurse and two undergraduate students) successfully completed all the procedures by giving the correct answers and making the correct decisions in the implementation of the game. These results may indicate the association between “resilience engineering” and medical care safety.
Furthermore, thorough information gathering ability and tendency not to omit crucial steps are suggested to be the core characteristics in nurses with high ability to deter medical accidents. It is suggested that the accident was prevented beforehand by the instantaneous situation judgment and danger prediction ability based on the clinical knowledge accumulated by the experience.

Comparative cross-cultural and contact studies were conducted to identify the possible causes and mechanisms of intercultural conflicts between the Japanese and Chinese. As a result, essential differences in Japanese and Chinese’ sense of values have been clarified. For example, regarding work-related values, Chinese university students tend to seek good human relationships to accomplish their collective goals, whereas Japanese university students tend to think that goals are to be accomplished by individual efforts while being consciousness of their contribution to the nation or society. Moreover, effective ways of coordinating the two distinctively different cultures were found. For example, cultural understanding can be achieved by drawing a line between the cultures based on a deep analysis of them.

We performed educational practice of KYT as a scientific medical safety education program based on a defense model against medical accident generation processes, and the effect by the practice was examined. As a result, enforcement of KYT affected the consciousness of medical safety, action, and error reporting. Positive influence on institution evaluation and safety culture was suggested.
In the introductory period in a KYT introduction progress model, obtaining knowledge does not have any appreciable effect. One month after the practice period, difficulty in scheduling enforcement time became an obstacle. After three month, new acts such as transfer of risk information and making KYT notes as well as self behavioral changes (reconfirmation etc.) were recognized in the trainees. These results suggest positive effects and the importance of KYT education in practice. I would like to return the knowledge of these to society widely from now on.

1. The multivariate analysis of "Background factors of medical accidents in the nursing scene and its relation to error generation" was carried out. A factor which triggers medical incident indirectly through stress reactions of nurses was found. In contrast, assertion ability, social support, and self-effect feeling are related to decrease of stress reaction of nurses, and were shown that they were factors to reduce Incident indirectly. Thus, this new viewpoint of "Background factors of medical accidents in the nursing scene and its relation to medical incident" yielded meaningful results.
2. In this program, "Dynamic model of the generation process to the error occurrence in relation to background factors of medical accidents" has been developed. In the analyses, daily practice of confirmation by nurses themselves was found to be often effective, and it is a stopper of errors. Nurses with little support from their superior had a higher tendency to experience medical incident under higher stress than usual scene. On the other hand, nurses who were able to obtain support from their superior, did not show influence of a degree of stress reaction in frequency of medical incident. Several quantitative analyses of error generation though modeling have been developing, but almost no study pays much attention to prevention factors in error generation. This type of basic analysis is a very important for the prevention of medical accidents.
3. Group presentation and discussion by nursing students were introduced as a method of improving their precognition ability for danger, and empirical research was carried out. "Risk experience game" for prevention of medical accidents was developed, and it was played in a class for student nurses and in a short course for teachers of nursing. As a result, a significant change in recognition for safety was observed.

1.2002 : Focusing on the near-accidental experience by trainees during practice, causes of such cases were analyzed through quantitative analysis type III. As a result, the cause are classified into the following four types. 1.Judgement mistake due to characteristics and situation of patients, 2.Mistake due to insufficient knowledge, 3.Lapses, and 4.Slips. The type 2 to 4 may be analogous to human error classification in cognitive psychology, but type 1 is unique in medical practice in particular by trainees.
2.2003 : Based on the results in 2002, quantitative analysis type III was carried out on near-accidental experiences during practice of trainees. The data were collected from the university undergraduates and guraduates. The analyses revealed that the cases are divided into two types : single cause or multi causes. From the results after analyses cases and examples were assumed, and countermeasures were worked out.
3.2004 : Freshman nurses were examined through interview. Near-accidental experience during the first 6 months as a freshman were interviewed. Quantitative analysis type III were given on cases associated with human errors during medical practice. It is realized that questionnaires designed for lapse was unsuitable to examine the relation between precognition of danger and error pattern of students as error pattern measures were inappropriate for student (trainee) behavior. New error pattern measures were designed for students.

The objectives of the research are to investigate whethor intercultural experience affects the sojourners' 1) motivation to learn English, 2) willingness to communicate, anxiety and confidence in L2 communication, 3) attitudes to different cultures, 4) international posture, and 5) communicative competence in L2.In 1999, questionnaires were developed and administered to three groups of Japanese learners of English for the preliminary study. One of them were Japanese high school students who left Japan in 1999 to study in the U.S. for one year. For this group a follow-up study was made three weeks after the arrival in the U.S. In 2000, the same questionnaires were administered to the second cohort of the high school sojourners, before their departure and three weeks later. A statistical analysis showed that communication anxiety reduced significantly during the three weeks
The third year, 2002 was spent mostly on data analyses and presentation of the results. By combining the new data gained during the three years with the old data we had accumulatcd, a number of new insights were gained. For example, an analysis through structural equation modeling demonstrated that attitudes to different cultures and international posture affected the level of motivation to learn L2, which in turn predicted communicative competence and communication confidence in L2.These results were presented in a domestic conference and were accepted by international journals for publication.

Surveys on the caregiving stresses and their relieving factors were conducted. 551 members of caregivers groups who have bedridden elderlys were asked to answer questionnaires by mail, and 258 valid answers (46.8%) were collected. We selected 239 people who have patients older than 65 years old. A stress-support model was proposed in terms of caregiving stresses and their indirect causes. The analyses includes caregiver's burden, mental health, private support through personal relations and public support. The difference due to types and sources of the supports was classified. We found that 1) Burden increases with a degree of dementia and age of patients. In rapidly aging societies like Japan, a fast counteraction is necessary. 2) Burden decreases with a number of years as a member of caregivers groups and help from sub-caregivers. The members of caregiver groups have less burden from anxieties to future uncertainties. 3) Public and private social supports show no appreciable effect on reduction of burnout feeling, but they suggest some direct, and relieving effects in a lower scores analysis subordinate position item. This effect due to the social support is limited, and activation of social support supply is desirable. 4) The type analysis indicates that people who have support by friends and/or informational support have higher scores in satisfaction. They have positive attitude towards solving problems. These supports are important in caregivers' quality of life. 5) The source analysis shows that people who have emotional support, from families have less burden. To supply social support by other than family members is a future problem for socialization of caregiving.

The main objectives of this research are 1) to analyze how objectively measured language competence, extroversion (as a holistic psychological indicator of outgoing behavioral tendency, sociability and talkativeness) and some other individual and situational variables affect the intercultural adjustment of Japanese high school students studying in America, and 2) to analyze the developmental aspects of English communicative competence through a year's overseas study experience. Participants were 139 high school students studying in the United States for one year and their host families. A series of questionnaires and tests were conducted before their departure and during their sojourn. Oral interviews were conducted with 16 students before departure and after they returned.
Through a combination of statistical analyzes of the data including factor analyzes multiple regression analyzes and path analyzes, the following results were obtained : 1) English proficiency was the significant predictor of host-rated adjustment. 2) Extroversion was the strongest predictor for almost all the self-rated measures of adjustment including satisfaction with friendship with Americans, relationship with host family and school work. 3) Social skills of "taking intiative to talk, " and "expressing one's emotions/intentions" play an important role in faciliataing adjustment and increasing satisfaction. 4) Extroversion, not English proficiency is related to the students' performance of social skills in America. 5) The past overseas experiences, if longer than a week, facilitate adjustment.
Detailed analyzes of the spoken speech samples of the 16 students showed a significant difference in "hesitation" before and after the sojourn. It was found that the students spoke in the post interview almost twice as fast as they had in the pre-departure interview. A large part of this change is accounted by the reduction in the amount of unfilled pauses.
