    Oceanic lithosphere moves over a mechanically weak layer (asthenosphere) characterized by low seismic velocity and high attenuation. Near mid-ocean ridges, partial melting can produce such conditions because of the high-temperature geotherm. However, seismic observations have also shown a large and sharp velocity reduction under oceanic plates at the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) far from mid-ocean ridges. Here, we report the effect of water on the seismic properties of olivine aggregates in water-undersaturated conditions at 3 GPa and 1,223 to 1,373 K via in-situ X-ray observation using cyclic loading. Our results show that water substantially enhances the energy dispersion and reduces the elastic moduli over a wide range of seismic frequencies (0.5 to 1,000 s). An attenuation peak that appears at higher frequencies (1 to 5 s) becomes more pronounced as the water content increases. If water exists only in the asthenosphere, this is consistent with the observation that the attenuation in the asthenosphere is almost constant over a wide frequency range. These sharp seismic changes at the oceanic LAB far from mid-ocean ridges could be explained by the difference in water content between the lithosphere and asthenosphere.

    To understand mantle dynamics, it is important to determine the rheological properties of bridgmanite, the dominant mineral in Earth’s mantle. Nevertheless, experimental data on the viscosity of bridgmanite are quite limited due to experimental difficulties. Here, we report viscosity and deformation mechanism maps of bridgmanite at the uppermost lower mantle conditions obtained through in situ stress-strain measurements of bridgmanite using deformation apparatuses with the Kawai-type cell. Bridgmanite would be the hardest among mantle constituent minerals even under nominally dry conditions in the dislocation creep region, consistent with the observation that the lower mantle is the hardest layer. Deformation mechanism maps of bridgmanite indicate that grain size of bridgmanite and stress conditions at top of the lower mantle would be several millimeters and ~10 5 Pa to realize viscosity of 10 21–22 Pa·s, respectively. This grain size of bridgmanite suggests that the main part of the lower mantle is isolated from the convecting mantle as primordial reservoirs.

    Thermochemical heterogeneities detected today in the Earth's mantle could arise from ongoing partial melting in different mantle regions. A major open question, however, is the level of chemical stratification inherited from an early magma-ocean (MO) solidification. Here we show that the MO crystallized homogeneously in the deep mantle, but with chemical fractionation at depths around 1000 km and in the upper mantle. Our arguments are based on accurate measurements of the viscosity of melts with forsterite, enstatite and diopside compositions up to ~30 GPa and more than 3000 K at synchrotron X-ray facilities. Fractional solidification would induce the formation of a bridgmanite-enriched layer at ~1000 km depth. This layer may have resisted to mantle mixing by convection and cause the reported viscosity peak and anomalous dynamic impedance. On the other hand, fractional solidification in the upper mantle would have favored the formation of the first crust.

    We have measured electrical conductivity of partially molten model peridotite. The model peridotite consists of forsterite with basalt and carbonate without iron. Conductivity was measured using a cubic anvil apparatus with a deformation function and Solartron 1260 impedance analyzer. The measurement conditions are 1600 K and 2 GPa. The shear strain speeds are 6 × 10-7 and 2 × 10-6 /s. We have found that conductivity in the shear direction is one order of magnitude higher than that normal to the shear direction. The magnitude of anisotropy in conductivity is independent of shear velocity. The magnitude of anisotropy is independent of the strain rate. These experimental results suggest that the observed highly anisotropic conductivity is explained by partially molten peridotite under shear conditions.

    We have measured the T-P-V data of Pt at high temperatures between 800 and 1600 K, and high pressures between 21 and 42 GPa, using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction experiments at Spring-8. Both a Kawai-type multi-anvil high pressure apparatus with sintered diamond anvils and a laser-heated diamond anvil cell were used to measure higher T-P data of Pt. Combining these measured high P and T data with previously reported 300 K volume compression data, and using the Mie-Greuneisen type thermal pressure analysis, we present the T-P-V EOS of Pt, as a reliable pressure calibration standard at high T and P conditions up to 3000 K and more than 150 GPa.

    地球のマントルの代表的な組成と考えられているパイロライトについてマルチアンビル高圧装置と放射光を用いたその場X線回折実験を30-40GPa, 1800℃の領域で行った。その結果これまで報告されている30GPaまでの相関係に変化は見られず、Mg-rich perovskite, Ca-rich perovskite, (Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase が観察された。

    放射光X線その場観察実験により、パイロライトとMORBの660km地震波不連続面付近の密度変化を明らかにした。密度は高温高圧下における鉱物の格子体積と、回収試料の化学組成分析から、X線密度の定義に従って決定した。パイロライト、MORBともIrifune (1993)、Irifune and Ringwood (1993)の結果と一致した。Irifune (1993)では特に下部マントル領域における密度変化に大きな誤差が生じていた(約±0.1g/cm&lt;SUP&gt;3&lt;/SUP&gt;)。これは、鉱物の化学組成分析、格子定数の誤差と、熱弾性パラメーターの不確定さに起因していた。本研究では、熱弾性パラメーターの誤差が加わらないため、約±0.05 g/cm&lt;SUP&gt;3&lt;/SUP&gt;以下の精度で密度変化を制約することができた。

    The Earth's lower mantle is considered to be composed mainly of (Mg,Fe)SiO3-perovskite and magnesiowüstite, and the iron contents influence their densities and phase relations. Therefore, it is very important to determine the iron contents of these phases in understanding structure and dynamics in the lower mantle. Several workers have studied Fe-Mg partitioning between (Mg,Fe)SiO3-perovskite and magnesiowüstite, but temperature dependence on the partitioning has not been well understood. In this study, we have experimentally determined the partitioning of iron between these two phases and its temperature dependence.We conducted high-pressure experiments using a Kawai type high-pressure apparatus at ~24 GPa, and at 1673-2273K. We used San Carlos olivine with a composition of (Mg0.91Fe0.09)2SiO4 as starting material. After the high presser and temperature runs, the products were examined using SEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction techniques to observe the microstructures, to measure the chemical composition and to identify the phase present, respectively.The partition coefficient defined as KD=(Fe/Mg)Pv/ (Fe/Mg)Mw increased from 0.19 to 0.34, with increasing temperature from 1673-2273K.

    マントル全域を網羅するような圧力を発生させるための技術開発を行っている。その方法としてマルチアンビル型高圧装置を用いてのMASS型セルを圧縮する。MASS型はmulti-anvil sliding systemの略であり、2段目アンビルの表面同士を滑らせることによって試料体空間を圧縮することになる。この方式では、圧縮空間は無限小サイズまでの可能であり、また、最高圧となる試料体部分をガスケットが支える必要がなく、他のマルチアンビルセルに比較して有利なセルであると考えられる。近年の材料開発の進展により、かつては困難であったMASS型による加圧が可能となっていると考えられる。
    当該年度では、2段目アンビルに超硬合金を用いて実験を行ってきている。これは、焼結ダイヤダイヤモンドアンビルが高価であるために、まず第一歩として、超硬による予備的実験を試みたものである。MASS型セルにおいては、一段目アンビルとの空隙を埋める疑似弾性体がアンビルの側面サポートに重要な役割を果たす。そこで、その材料として、パイロフィライトなどの粘土鉱物や銅などの金属を試験した。その結果、ステンレススチールが強度と流動の関係において適当であるとの結果に至った。また、3次元加工機を用いて様々形状を試験してきた。

    本研究は下部マントル鉱物のそれぞれの粘性率差を明らかにするとともに、多相系での歪量を変数とした粘性率の決定を行うことで下部マントルの三次元粘性率構造を高圧実験から推定し、沈み込み帯の様式の多様性の要因を解き明かすことを目的としている。そこで、1年目となる2023年度には、以下の二つのことを行った。
    1.下部マントル中で3番目に主要鉱物であるCaSiO3-ペロブスカイトの粘性率測定
    CaSiO3-ペロブスカイトは3番目に主要な鉱物であり、2022年にダイヤモンドアンビルセルを用いた変形実験により下部マントル主要鉱物中で最も柔らかい鉱物である可能性が示唆された。そこで、本研究では、川井式セル及び変形111型マルチアンビル装置を用いて約18万気圧下での変形実験中のその場応力ー歪測定を行うことで粘性率の決定を行った。その結果、CaSiO3-ペロブスカイトは我々が過去に報告したブリッジマナイトに比べて柔らかいものの、二番目に主要なフェロペリクレースよりも固いことが明らかとなった。
    2.超高温真空炉を用いた微小多結晶体の合成
    本研究では、多相系としての下部マントルの粘性率を測定することを目的としている。その実験を行うために、均質な微細組織を持つ多相系の微小多結晶焼結体の合成は必要不可欠である。そこで、ナノ多結晶焼結体を合成することを可能とするために真空下での焼結体を行うために超高温真空炉及び冷間等方加圧装置の導入を行った。本年は、フォルステライト多結晶体及びCaSiO3焼結体の合成を行った。CaSiO3焼結体は1.に述べたCaSiO3-ペロブスカイトの変形実験の出発物質として使用した。

    大容量川井型マルチアンビル装置(KMA)の最近の技術革新により、今まで困難であった圧力、温度での高圧実験を展開できるようになったことを背景に、KMAの特性を最大限に活かすことでマントルの未解決の諸問題に様々な角度から取り組む研究課題である。マントルの強親鉄元素の高濃度異常の原因として提唱されているレイトベニア仮説論争の検証、下部マントルに存在するとされる始原的リザーバーの起源を解明するために、超高圧下における分配実験、変形実験、熱電測定といった新しい視点の実験から制約する。これらの結果を整合的に説明できる統合的なマントル進化モデルを創出することが本研究の目的となる。
    本年度は、本研究の多角的アプローチのうち以下の3つの研究において成果を得ることができた。1)レイトベニア仮説を検証するために高圧下での溶融鉄とケイ酸塩メルト間の強親鉄元素の分配実験を圧力25GPaで行い、回収試料の分析を東京大学平田研究室のレーザーアブレーションICP-MSで行った。先行研究における川井型マルチアンビル装置での最高圧力実験である18GPaの圧力の結果と異なり、強親鉄元素はケイ酸塩メルトにより分配される結果が得られた。2)始原的リザーバーの存在がBEAMSモデルで説明できるかを検証するための試験的に低歪量の高圧変形実験を行った。ブリッジマナイトとポストスピネルを直列に接した一軸圧縮実験を行ったところ、両者に違いは見られなかった。また、ブリッジマナイト単相の構成則を決定し、ブリッジマナイトがマントル主要鉱物で最も硬いことを明らかにした。3)下部マントルと核の間の熱交換を制約するため、パルス加熱法による熱伝導度測定でブリッジマナイトの熱伝導度の組成依存性を決定したところ、今までの研究に比較して、AlやFeといった主要な不純物は大きく熱伝導度を下げることが確認された。

  • 快削性ボロン添加ダイヤモンドの開発

    現在まで川井方高圧発生装置で最も安定的に高温発生が可能なヒーター材として半導体のグラファイトが用いられている。しかしながら、グラファイトは5 GPa以上で絶縁体であるダイヤモンドに相転移するためにマントル深部条件でのヒーターとして使用できない。次に有望なヒーター材は同じく半導体であるCa添加LaCrO3であるが現在この素材の生産は終了し、代替品であるSr添加LaCrO3では2300 Kを超える安定した加熱が困難である。均質な加熱ができる半導体だけでなく、高融点金属(Re等)もヒーター材として使用されるが、高温条件ほど局所的な異常発熱が起きやすくなり、安定かつ長時間の高温発生が困難になる。そこで、本研究では、ボロン添加ダイヤモンド(BDD)が高融点かつ温度上昇と共に電気抵抗が低くなるような半導体特性を持つことに注目する。新たなヒーター材として加熱の安定性と形状加工の際の快削性とを兼ね揃えたBDD焼結技術を確立することで、下部マントルに相当する超高圧力条件下でもマントル温度を優に超える高温でのマントル鉱物の融解実験を行なえるようにすることを目的とする。
    2021年度には、快削性を持つBDD焼結対合成のため、ダイヤモンド粉末と非晶質ボロンの混合比及び焼結条件の最適化を行った。その結果、ボロンの添加量に伴い、BDDヒーター抵抗の減少が観察された。本年度で最も安定した加熱ができた条件は0.5%のボロンの添加量及び1300度・30minである。次年度にはこの条件で合成したBDDヒーターの圧力発生効率の確認やさらなる高温発生テスト・ケイ酸塩鉱物の融解実験を行う予定である。

    本研究経費を得て、以下に示す投資を行うことができた。
    ①本年度に岡山大学からGHz測定装置を大阪大学に移設し、大阪大学で大学院生と共同して研究を進める体制を整えた。②金属製の中型キャビネットを購入しGHz音速測定部を内部に置くことで外来ノイズの遮蔽を行った。この結果、従前に見られたスパイク状のノイズがほとんど観測されなくなった。③低ノイズのプレアンプを導入し、さらに、④高速電子スイッチをファンクション発振器で制御するシステムを構築し、シグナルのSN比の向上を実現した。
    この他にも、⑤ZnO圧電素子に対するインジウム電極の形状の改善と圧着状態の解明、⑥バッファロッド用基板結晶と白金電極の間に接着性改善のためのクロムのプレスパッタリング導入、など研究を安定的に進展させるための技術開発を行った。
    このような技術開発をもとにMgOの測定を行った。MgOは先行研究が多く、GHz測定の信頼性確認に最適の物質である。同一セルで初めてP波とS波の測定に成功した。圧力はSPring-8でのX線格子定数の測定から0.6GPaと決定された。試料の厚さは、回収後のガスケットの厚さから見積もった。最終的に得られたP波速度とS波速度比は1.63と先行研究と調和的結果が得られた。
    これらの成果を踏まえて、フェロペリクレースを合成しスピン転移での音速測定実施の機運が熟したといえる。そのために向けて大阪大学大学院生と協力し本研究課題達成のために邁進する。一方、前年度から継続中の鉄の音速測定も上記技術開発の結果を経て進展中である。これらの結果を含めてこれまで独自開発を行ってきたGHzーDAC音速法の技術論文を早期投稿する。

    本課題開始後3年が経過し、66GPaでのP波トラベルタイム測定に成功した。試料はフェロペリクレース(鉄含量17%)である。今後、S波測定も同時に行い降圧過程での計測を進めていき、フェロペリクレース中の鉄イオンのスピン転移に伴う弾性異常を解明していく予定である。降圧過程で測定するのは、試料厚みを拘束するにあたってガスケットの塑性変形を最小限に抑えるためである。
    GHz-DAC音速法の圧力上限が拡大したのは、本課題において実施した様々な技術開発の総和としての結果である。シールドボックス、高性能同軸ケーブル、RFスイッチ、低ノイズアンプの導入などが測定装置面での改良で合った。スマートフォン等の生活ノイズの影響を避けるために、深夜測定をスタンダードにしたことも大きく寄与している。
    測定技術面からは、アンモニア水による洗浄、グリセリンやメタルカップラーの導入が大きく貢献した。今後はZnO圧電素子膜の性能向上をとバッファロッドとダイヤモンドアンビルの接合方法の改善を行っていく。
    直近の1年でGHz-DAC音速法の研究の拡がりを実現した。岡山大学理学部(寺崎英紀教授、分担者)にもGHz装置を立ち上げ、鉄系試料の測定を開始したところである。このテーマはコア形成過程を念頭に置いたものである。最初のテーマとしてε鉄の音速測定に取り組んでいる。
    もう一つは、水・氷試料への応用である。こちらのテーマは氷惑星・衛星を念頭においている。水・氷試料は金属酸化物より音速が遅く、GHz音速法でより測定しやすい。
    以上の成果を学会発表や論文として公表していく。

However, mechanism, by which water affects rehology, was unknown. In this study, in-situ IR measurements were performed to identify hydrogen positions in mantle minerals in order to understand the mechanisms of effect of water. In addition, rheological measurements of mantle minerals were performed under dry conditions, which is the basis for understanding the effects of water on rheology.

    Geophysical observation revealed that the viscosity increases by an order of magnitude at a depth of ~ 1000 km in the earth’s lower mantle. At a same depth of ~1000 km, the stagnation of the subducted slabs are observed in several subduction zones. To constrain the mechanism of the viscosity jump, the viscosity properties of the constituent minerals of the lower mantle were investigated by using an improved and newly installed high-pressure deformation apparatus for a mineral physics approach. As a result, it is likely that the contribution of ferropericrace, which is the secondary phase of lower mantle assembly, for the viscosity change is low, and the viscosity of bridgmanite itself is the key factor.

    Accurate detection of trace amounts of water in the mantle is the key to understanding mantle evolution and dynamics, as the presence of trace amounts of water in the mantle significantly reduces the viscosity and solidus temperature of rocks. In this study, the effects of trace amounts of water incorporated into olivine, which is the main mineral of the upper mantle, on the physical characteristics of the upper mantle were determined as functions of the elastic constant, attenuation factor (Q value), and electrical conductivity as a function of water content. It was found that the lack of frequency dependence attenuation observed under the old oceanic floor at the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary can be explained by the presence of a trace amount of water of about 200 ppm by weight only in the asthenosphere.

    Deformation experiments plays important role to understand the rheological properties and hence deformation at high pressure is a key for mantle dynamics. We developed high pressure deformation by adding the rotational deformation device to the conventional diamond anvil. Due to this development, we largely expanded the pressure range to the deep lower mantle condition from the condition of the top of lower mantle. Deformation test by using the present device at room temperature and ~40 GPa suggests that this device is useful for the deformation at high pressure.

    Novel high-pressure and high-temperature techniques have been developed using tungsten carbide (WC), sintered diamond (SD), and nano-polycrystalline diamond (NPD) as ultra-hard anvils for some static high-pressure devices. The pressure and temperature ranges have been significantly expanded by these techniques, which have been applied to various studies such as using deformation, X-ray absorption, neutron diffraction, electrical conductivity, and sound velocity measurements under ultra-high pressure. Some important scientific results relevant to the mantle-core interaction have been obtained in collaboration with the researchers in other groups using thus developed techniques.

    On inelastic X-ray scattering experiment (IXS), we published the measurement results of Au and Pt in international papers. These were constituted only using the bulk modulus obtained by IXS and the X ray lattice constant data measured at the same time; thus they are recognized as the primary pressure scale. After that, we succeeded in measuring the single crystal elasticity of NaCl up to 20 GPa and Ta up to ~33 GPa.
    On the other hand, on the GHz sound velocity method, it took long time to acquire the signal from the DAC sample. However by introducing ammonia coating, metal coupler, devising new DAC support, and developing S-wave buffer rod, the simultaneous P-wave and S-wave of the iron sample was finally obtained at 2 GPa.

    We determined the grain growth and diffusion rates of hcp iron and estimated the dominant deformation mechanism and viscosity of the inner core based on the experimental results. As a result, chemical heterogeneity is essential to interpret the observed heterogeneity between the eastern and western sides of the inner core in seismic attenuation. Moreover, we experimentally showed the small effect of Si on viscosity of hcp iron, indicating that light element(s) rather than Si may significantly affect the viscosity of the inner core.
