    When a verb takes two complements, the first complement, typically an accusative object, c-commands the second complement, and the second complement can host a relative clause containing antecedent contained deletion (ACD). This simple fact, which, upon careful considerations, reveals that English accusative objects raise to a higher position than previously thought. The theoretical claim is that objects raise to check Case to the outer vP-spec. We argue that the v consists of two separate heads, the higher v[acc] and the lower vθ; objects raise to the outer spec of vPθ; and that the verb moves to the head of the higher v[acc]. © 2014 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.

    This paper analyzes English ". wh-slifting" sentences (for example, How old is she do you think). We argue that these sentences are not scope-marking constructions nor are they derived by simple clausal pied-piping as an alternative to wh-extraction. We show that such sentences are akin to declarative slifting sentences, but more restricted than the latter particularly in the kinds of evidential predicates they co-occur with. We argue that the slifted question is not first merged as the complement of the main clause, but that the relationship between the two clauses is mediated by an evidential morpheme, which takes the do you think-clause as its specifier. This analysis, which explains several properties of wh-slifting that distinguish it from scope-marking constructions and Basque-type clausal pied-piping, partially reconciles wh-slifting questions with paratactic approaches to quotative constructions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

    Under what conditions is ellipsis possible? Fiengo and May (Indices and identity, MIT Press, 1994), Fox (Economy and semantic interpretation, MIT Press, 2000), and Rooth (Ellipsis redundancy and reduction redundancy, 1992), among many others, conclude that syntax plays a role in ellipsis, at least in part. Merchant (The syntax of silence: sluicing, islands, and the theory of ellipsis, Oxford University Press, 2001: p19-25) challenges this view, and argues that ellipsis in general, or sluicing in particular, is conditioned purely by semantics, providing arguments against syntactic accounts. More recently, this view is challenged by Chung (Sluicing and the lexicon: the point of no return, Ms. University of California, 2006) and Merchant himself (Voice and ellipsis, Ms. University of Chicago, 2007, Linguistic Inquiry 39: 169-179, 2008b), who provide evidence for the relevance of syntax. This article shows that Merchant's (The syntax of silence: sluicing, islands, and the theory of ellipsis, Oxford University Press, 2001) arguments do not constitute a real challenge to a syntactic account. In so doing, it is also demonstrated that syntax does play a role in ellipsis. We then develop a syntactic isomorphism condition on ellipsis that accounts for observed facts. © Walter de Gruyter.

    On the basis of an asymmetry between VP-deletion and pseudogapping, Merchant (2008a) concludes that ellipsis is conditioned by syntax. This article demonstrates that both pseudogapping and VP-deletion potentially allow voice mismatch. The unacceptable cases of voice mismatch in these constructions are attributed to a discourse factor (Kehler 2000, 2002). Nevertheless, since sluicing does not allow voice mismatch (Merchant 2001, 2007) even in the same context that allows voice mismatch in VP-ellipsis, Merchant's (2007, 2008a) conclusion is still valid. A syntactic condition on ellipsis is proposed, based on a semantic condition from Takahashi and Fox 2005. Kehler's discourse explanation is phrased in a revised format. © 2011 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    本研究は、主節構造に関わる意味解釈の言語間の差、(i) 時制の一致の有無、(ii) 主節の時制形態素の義務性、(iii) 終助詞の有無、(iv)とりたて詞の共起制限などに取り組んだ。初年度には英語の小説とその日本語訳2つでパラレルコーパスを構築し、最終年度には中国語訳2つを加えて、時制形態素の有無に関して異なると考えられるこれら3言語が、共通の時制解釈原理に従うことを明らかにした。。また、日本語特有の項省略、「~のだ」構文、間接受動文の理論的研究や節構造一般に関する研究を進め、11の論文、5つの学会発表で成果を公開した。その一部は最終年度の研究報告書にまとめられている。
